Cannot eject ext HD after Frontrow

Whenever I use Frontrow to play a movie from my external hard disk (I placed an alias of the folder in the external HD to the Movies folder), I found that I am unable to eject the external HD even after getting out of Frontrow.
I get a message that the external HD is in use and cannot be ejected.
Anyway I could eject the HD without having to restart the computer?
Thanks

Invoke Front Row and hit cmd-option-esc.
This will actually quit Front Row (instead of having it just fade to a background process). Can you then eject the disk?
If not, then it might be getting indexed by Spotlight. If so, then that sounds like a bug in Front Row.

I cannot eject my new ipod classic after sync with i-tunes on my pc due, it states, to open files being used by another application. What does this mean? How can I get my ipod to eject?

If it's a one-time "glitch," you can try restarting your computer with the iPod still connected.  Try ejecting again after the restart.
If the problem recurs, you may have a process running (other than iTunes) that is accessing the iPod's storage.  When connected, the iPod's "disk" is like other mounted volumes.  This process may be some type of utility that continously monitors your mounted volumes for security reasons, such as to prevent access by malware.
If you know of such a program that you have running in the background, there may be a setting to exclude your iPod's disk.

after backup, TM cannot eject itself automatically, and then both my mac and TM get high temperature. why is that, I had the same problem twice. I re-start my mac, it doesn't work at tall, still the same problem.

Are you saying, right now that the TM refuses to work even after a re-boot?

Go to your computer's System Tray and try ejecting.  If you can't eject, there is an application that is trying to access your iPod.
Go to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx and download ProcessExplorer.
Go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555665 and follow the instructions under Resolution.
Note that this is a good, general process any time you can't access any file.
In my case an update to RealPlayer installed a program called RecordingManager that was accessing my iPod.

  • Cannot eject USB HDD that is being used for Time Machine after upgrading to Lion

After upgrading to Lion from SL, I have had only one issue.  Amazing!  Great job Apple with making the process smooth, but my issue is this.  Ever since the upgrade, I cannot eject the external USB HDD that I use for Time Machine.  I get the following error:
The disk "Time Machine" wasn't ejected because one or more programs may be using it.  To eject the disk immediately, click the Force Eject button.  There is the little spinning fan and the message "Trying to eject" and then the fan disappears and where it said, "To eject the disk immediately..." it now says "You can try to eject the disk again or click Force Eject to eject it immediately."  I can click Force Eject and it will work, but seems like there is an issue that needs to be addressed.  Any thoughts anyone?

Ok, I think there's a slightly better way, but try this:
Open the Terminal app (in your Applications/Utilities folder). Be very careful with this app.  It's a direct link into UNIX, the underpinnings of OSX, but without the protections of OSX.
In Terminal, the prompt looks like this: <Computer Name>:~ <your name>$
(where <your name> is your short user name).  It's followed by a non-blinking block cursor.
Copy the following after the prompt:
              lsof |grep
and leave a space.  Then drag the Backups.backupdb folder on the TM drive from a Finder window into the Terminal window (Terminal will convert that into a "path").
    Press Return.
You should get a list of geeky stuff; but the first thing on the next line should be the process that's using the drive (Finder in the sample), followed by another prompt:

  • DVD icon disappeared from desktop after copy-cannot eject

I am copying a home slide show thru Disk Utility. After the slide show copied, the DVD icon on my desktop disappeared and I cannot eject it to then install a clean DVD to Burn. Please advise.

Launch Disk Utility again. If the DVD is recognized then select it and then select the Eject icon. If it appears but is "greyed out" then select it, then select Mount, and then Eject.
If that does not work, restart your MacBook Pro while holding the trackpad depressed.

  • Time Machine backups fail after initial drive connection, cannot eject drive

I have a Macbook Pro 13" Retina Display, 8GB running OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 and have set Time Machine backups to a 1TB WD My Passport.  When I first connect the drive the backup will run fine, but subsequent backups always fail.  In addition I typically cannot eject the drive.  I've scoured online forums and have completely reformatted the drive, and have even deleted some backup settings files from the hard drive, none of these has resolved my issue.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an an abnormal backup. Now

Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • HT1351 Whether or not I sync items on iTunes to my ipod, I cannot eject the ipod because a message keeps coming up and saying that my ipod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are being used by another application. How do I fix this?

I just got an ipod classic 7th generation a couple days ago and I'm having a heck of a time with it. My latest problem is that with media on iTunes, I cannot eject the ipod because it says that it cannot be ejected because it contains files that are being used by another application. What application is this, and what do I do about it?

    Hi newipoduser,
    Here are some possible solutions:
Do you use musicmatch jukebox on your computer? If you do, you have to go into task manager on windows and end process mim.exe. It interferes with disconnecting ext devices
    Empty your "trash/recycle bin."
If that doesn't work, try quitting all your programs, especially music-type programs, basically things that look for mp3's etc.
if that doesn't work, "log off" then "log on" and that should refresh/purge your OS system.
Finally, you can restart your computer.
    Hope one of these helps!
    Cheers,
    GB

  • HT1478 i get a message when trying to sync..."requried disk cannot be found" even after enableing disk use

i get a message when trying to sync..."requried disk cannot be found" even after enableing disk use

First make sure you are using the most up to date version of iTunes and have all the latest Windows updates/patches installed on your PC.  From there, try again and if still no luck, make sure you are plugging your iPod into a high powered USB 2.0 port.
    Otherwise try these steps:
    1. Run “c:\WINDOWS\system32\devmgmt.msc” (i.e. *Device Manager*), and leave it open for now for later use
    2. Start up iTunes
    3. Next, connect your iPod.
    4. Go to your iPod Settings and select the “Enable disk use” option from under theSummary tab.
    5. A dialog box will pop up reminding you that you’ll need to manually eject. Go ahead and hit OK
    6. Hit Apply to save changes to the iPod
    7. Quickly switch to the Device Manager window and right-click on any item within the window and select “Scan for hardware changes”
    8. Finally, switch back to iTunes, and try re-syncing your iPod to see if it helped.
It might not also hurt to trash your iPod's Photo cache if it has one (i.e. you sync photos to the iPod).  See this article for information on where to find this folder on your Windows XP machine.

  • Cannot eject smb share or shut down

I have three users who have updated to Yosemite and all three have developed the same issue.
After a period of use, they cannot eject the SMB Windows share. The Finder tells us that the volume is in use, however no applications or files are open. Forcing the eject, or shutting down causes the OS to hang after the Finder has quit.
Running lsof | grep /pathtoshare confirms that are no files open, and shows that there are multiple directories open, however no Finder windows are open.
Apart from the recent update to 10.10, the other common factor is that they all use Adobe Creative Cloud applications and Fontagent Pro. All software including the OS is patched to the latest version.
Has anyone else experienced a similar issue or have any suggestions?
    Thanks

A bit off-topic, but where do all the sysadmins hang out these days? The afp548 and macwindows.com forums seem dead. I could do with knowing where to find help and support from professional admins who look after Mac clients and Windows servers, for that is unfortunately the way the business has chosen to go. I knew where I was with the trusted OS X Server.
    I'm feeling a bit lonely!

  • CAN´T EJECT my disc after reinstalling os x

My hard disc crashed so I installed a new one
I tried to run it from installation disc but could not
    Finally I used time machine.
My system is restored, but now I cannot eject installation disc
Have tried already turning on computer pushing eject button, and also pushing
    trackpad without success.
    What else can I do?

If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
I would recommend you reinstall OS X as well:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
I would also ask if you partitioned and formatted your new drive before installing your software?

  • Cannot eject any disk or disk image

I cannot eject any disk or disk image except with disk utility. Dragging to trash, sidebar or toolbar buttons, even the keyboard button will not work. Restarting holding mouse button and disk utility eject button do work. Any suggestions?

    Try doing this:
Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
See if this restores your eject functions.
