Cannot eject smb share or shut down

I have three users who have updated to Yosemite and all three have developed the same issue.
After a period of use, they cannot eject the SMB Windows share. The Finder tells us that the volume is in use, however no applications or files are open. Forcing the eject, or shutting down causes the OS to hang after the Finder has quit.
Running lsof | grep /pathtoshare confirms that are no files open, and shows that there are multiple directories open, however no Finder windows are open.
Apart from the recent update to 10.10, the other common factor is that they all use Adobe Creative Cloud applications and Fontagent Pro. All software including the OS is patched to the latest version.
Has anyone else experienced a similar issue or have any suggestions?
Thanks

A bit off-topic, but where do all the sysadmins hang out these days? The afp548 and macwindows.com forums seem dead. I could do with knowing where to find help and support from professional admins who look after Mac clients and Windows servers, for that is unfortunately the way the business has chosen to go. I knew where I was with the trusted OS X Server.
I'm feeling a bit lonely!

Hey I typically have this problem as well. For starters what steps have you went to to eject the drive? Have you just done it from finder or have you gone to the Disk Utility and tried to eject from there as well? If not then I would recommend this first. I would also recommend before doing anything to save any neccessary information that was placed on the drive locally if possible.

  • I cannot get my Iphoto to shut down?

I cannot get my Iphoto to shut down.

If this involves iPhoto for Mac then use the Force Quit command, under the Apple Menu.
    If that doesn't help:
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?

  • It won't eject the Ipod without shutting down the entire laptop....

I have what I guess is the 'classic' 30g iPod it has no problems syncing at all my problem comes in when I try to 'eject' it. I have tried getting itunes to 'eject' and the response comes up:
"The iPod _ cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application."
This happens if Itunes is the only thing running OR when I shut Itunes down and try to eject it with the icon in the task bar (blonde I don't know what it's called but a screen comes up and you click the 'stop' button and it's supposed to turn lose of things that you connect with the usb cord) and I get the same message "other applications are using the ipod shut down all applications and try again later"
I have tried starting the laptop then itunes and connecting the iPod or running half a dozen different things it makes no difference. The ONLY way I have found so far is to completely shut it down (restarting the comp doesn't give me enough time to get it unplugged before the laptop 'grabs' it again and shows the do not disconnect screen) the ONLY thing I currently have 'syncing' to the ipod is music... no pictures, no calendars, and no contacts.
I have downloaded the newest updates for both the Ipod and Itunes.... any one know why it's doing this and how to make it quit? .... having to shut everything down just to make this 'turn loose' is getting old real quick and I would like to have contacts, calendars, and pictures back.

Fair enough. Another thought along similar lines ... even though you're getting a slightly different set of messages, the sorts of applications discussed in the following document are also worth checking on:
Windows Vista "No Disk" or "Exception Processing Message" alert occurs when ejecting iPod after enabling disk use
... and also the application discussed in the following thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6828218#6828218
(Thinking about the latter one, because if it's a background process that is checking the iPod, then that might cause grief even though your Task Manager is not showing that any other applications are running.)

  • Cannot restart - log out or shut down...VERY FRUSTRATING!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi
I can't restart, log out or shut down my power book g4. I have always done it through the apple display cinema to which is connected but when I hit the side button on the apple display, nothing happens the light on the bottom-right corner dims but no window pops up with the usual shut down/sleep/log out options.
Even if I try directly from the menu...nothing works except the sleep option.
I tried as well directly from the power book after having it disconnected from the display, does not work.
Disk permissions are repaired, but it did not help.
    PLEASE HELP HELP!
    Many thanks in advance.

Hmm, sounds to me like a software issue. Maybe something is installed which prevents the shutdown. It could be harware (peripherals) too. Try without any connected peripheral (display, usb/firewire-devices, etc.). If that does not work try adding a new user account (you can call it "test") via System Preferences and see if the problem is the same with this user.
    Good luck!

  • Cannot start dual G5 after shutting down

I have not been able to find a solution in the discussions, so I thought to post.
My dual 2GHz G5 (late 2003) was wroking fine. Suddenly the screen froze and I no longer had mouse or keyboard access. I pressed the start button for 10 seconds to shut down. Have not been able to restart since. I have tried unplugging power and resetting PMU inside case. When I press the Start button, white lamp only while holding button, no chime, hear fans spin up, can feel/hear drives spin up, but nothing after that. I maintain disks and such regularly, so not a HD problem that I can tell. Running 10.4.10 with all recent patches and updates. G5 will not start from external FW HD either. Unable to run any diagnostics, as it will not start.
Have looked through topic like this posted by others and have not seen any solutions or that issues were resolved. Does anybody have any idea what the problem and fix for this is? Only outside suggestion I have heard is possible CPU failure. Have no idea what that would be like. Everything else was functioning until the screen froze and the keyboard/mouse went dead.
Any thoughts are much appreciated. I need to get this unit back online very soon. Thanks.

Let us know if you have good results after getting it fixed. I'll do the same since I told the shop to go ahead and fix it...
Facing the same conundrum myself, not wanting to have to unexpectedly shell out 3X more than the repair for the MacPro and then who knows how much to get the new MacPro up to my working specs when my current G5 is set up just how I like it and works well. I was faced with buying new video cards and adapters for my apple display to work with the MacPro etc etc...
I found a list of the flashing light codes on another forum for future reference...
1 Flash = No RAM (tested and verified)
2 Flash = Incompatible or Dead RAM (tested and verified)
3 Flash = Test Passed on Dead RAM (no)
4 Flash = No good Boot ROM (no)
5 Flash = Dead Processor (no)
I had 3 flashes followed by a pause... The shop could intermittently get my machine to boot just fine and pass the apple diagnostic tests, but then it would fail to re-boot at some point.
They said they tried swapping out ram chips only to get the same result, meaning that the ram chip bays on the board were shorting out in their opinion.
Really blows to have to pay almost what the same computer would cost to buy again on ebay, but since I'll never ebay another computer ever again (always have bad luck) my only other option is to fix it or buy a new machine and the cost was just at the threshold of where it becomes more sensable to buy a new machine. If the repair was over 1K I would have not even thought about fixing it.

  • Cannot access SMB shares from Windows boxes in AD domain

    Hey folks
I've needed to tackel this for sometime, but Santa is bringing me a dual core G5 and the urgency just increased.
I have an Active Directory domain and all of my macs are successfully joined and get Kerberos tickets upon login. I can access any shares I need from OS X -> windows but NOT the other way around.
I did finally noticed that only local user accounts seem to appear in the accounts list in the sharing pref pane. So I have figured out that I can access any users folder with that one account- OUCH! What I need is access control based on the user.
For instance if I want to share ~jdoe and jdoe is a mobile account and an AD user then if I am logged into windows as [email protected] then I should be able to access the share on the mac. Conversly I should not be able to access ~jdoe with the mac's local admin account and pass.
Do I need to change my smb.conf to reflect AD and if so, where/what?
Also, do I need to map UIDs to anything? And, is that a security risk?
    Thanks!
    -N

Hi SpaceBass, have you looked into sharepoints or into Netinfo manager. I have been playing around with sharepoints and it does let me enter non local users into the sharing prefs- albeit manually. Only thing is , depending on the number of macs you have, it could be a long and tedious job entering it all by hand. Netinfo may have an easier way, I'll do some more digging and post back.
    Cheers.

  • Macbook Pro not shutting down using "cmd alt ctrl eject"

Usually, the keyboard shortcut "cmd alt ctrl eject" worked as expected, shutting down my Macbook Pro 2010 (running latest Mountain Lion) instantly.
Now, recently, it started to behave differently: It will now not shut down, but (very shortly - almost not readable) display the error message "You shut down your computer because of a problem" and then go to the login screen. Typing in the password will lead back to the desktop - no shutting down. Otherwise, through the menu or power button, shutting down still works.
I have browsed the forum for this case, but could only find few other (mostly unsolved) issues that sounded similar (issues on start up etc), but didn't really match my specific issue.
Did anybody experience a similar issue and/or has an idea for a solution?
btw I have recently installed a new SSD drive and installed Mountain Lion freshly. After the install, the keyboard shortcut worked fine, until it stopped working...
    Thanks, Ralf.

After playing around some more, I think I have found the source of the issue.
It seems that a background process from a ColorMunki calibration tool kept the Mac from shutting down properly. The calibration SW had placed a little icon in the top bar. After exiting from that program, the keyboard command is now again working.
So, might be that other similar cases are also related to processes / programs still running in the background, without being visible as such in the dock...

  • IMac won't shut down after using Time Machine

Here is the thing: My iMac (late 2009, 24", 8 GB RAM) won't shut down when I use my external HD for Time Machine. After the back up I try to eject the external HD but the icon won't disappear on the screen, it only gets blank and is not clickable anymore. It is still visible in the menu of the Finder but with no ejection sign anymore. Programs that were open before won't close even if I use the forced shut down function. But it seems like they are closed as they don't appear on the list anymore. When I then try to shut down the whole system the screen goes black and the wheel turns for hours! So that I finally have to shut it down manually.
This happens only after using the external HD for the back ups and when I then try to eject it. If I don't eject it everything goes normal. If I don't connect it everything goes normal. Sure, you might say, hey leave it plugged in then. But as it is a 3 TB HD I also use it for my MBP so I have to eject it
Is this a known issue or a bug in the system of Yosemite? With Mavericks everything worked really well - no problems at all. On the MBP (late 2011, i7, 8 GB RAM) it also works well. So I am kind of annoyed the I always have to shut the iMac down manually which can't be that healthy for the system.
Any insights on that issue are highly appreciated - thanks a lot!
    Birgit

Okay, just realized that the same problem occurs with the MBP after rejecting the external HD
Icon gets blank, cannot be clicked anymore, while shutting down the MBP normally the screen goes black and the wheel is turning forever but nothing else happens. So I have to force it to shut down.
It seems to be a general problem with connecting an external HD once in a while for doing a time machine back up regularly and then eject it. So the question is: who has the same problem or does everybody have their HD permanently connected to their Macs for Back ups? Either by USB or WLAN? It never was a problem wit Mavericks and I don't want to permanently back up my system every hour - once a week is good for me BUT this cannot be adjusted in the time machine settings which would be a very good idea.
Any solution is still highly appreciated !!
    Thanks a lot,
    Birgit

  • "you shut down due to a problem" info box after boot from normal shutdown

After a normal shut down, (eject external drive, Click Shut Down from Apple menue).
Normal start up routine (push power button on back) results in Info Box telling me that I shfut down due to a problem ( i did not) and if I want to open windows open at time of shut down I should selct the check box and let it start up.
Where do you suppose this came from?  and what do I do about troubleshooting ??
