Cannot establish new Rules in Mail 7.3

For at least the last 6 months when I try to set up new Rules in Mail, they don't stay. The old ones I set up >6 months ago always appear to work, but if I define a new rule and apply it immediately it works,but next time I open Mail it is gone from the list of Rules.
Any suggestions for how to fix this? I like to filter some incoming messages into certain mailboxes using Rules but can no longer do this because new Rules have become ephemeral

Cannot make new notes in mail

Hello I can't make new notes in Mail.
The last thing I could do with notes was making a note and pasting a screenshot .png in it. When I wanted to open that note it kept loading for ever. I deleted all notes I had because none of them would load, but that made no difference.
Situation now is:
The button is visible but won't work, trying to create a new note via "archive>new note" doesnot work either.
I followed suggestions from other threads on this topic:
• rebuilded all my postboxes - no result
• resetted my mobile me sync settings - no result
• deleted my rss feeds in mail - no result
My colleague has the same problem, what we have in common is we both use iphones synced with mobile me, and received rss feeds in mail (I deleted this function in mail to check if thats the problem - but that didn't make a difference).
Stays the iphone-syncing or something else I am not aware of.
Has anyone a suggestion?

I noticed this problem with Notes being inaccessible on my Macs a few weeks ago and just now took the time to track down the reason. Thanks to everyone on this thread, in particular PlanetLingo and M1CH43L.
It seems that iOS 4.3 added a new default font for Notes called "Noteworthy." I think the problem arrises for those of us who sync iOS devices and our Macs through MobileMe and include Notes and Preferences in the sync. I think the font switch and subsequent sync of Preferences cause the Mac to default to a font it doesn't have, which then causes all the problems.
Quck fix: Change the Notes preference on your iOS devices to use one of the alternate fonts: Helvetica or Marker Felt. As long as the one you choose is available on our Macs, the problem should go away.
A search of the web doesn't reveal an Apple version of Noteworthy available for the Mac. If anyone finds one, please post here. Thanks.

Cannot activate new account in Mail, random misfuncioning. Reinstall Mail?

I am not able to activate a new POP account in Mail (I already have 1 POP and 1 .Mac active accounts). Other Mac with identical software has no problem at all....!
Maybe too many emails, or just the Mail software is corrupted.
Do I need to reinstall Mail? How to do it without loosing precious emails in memory?

I wouldn't reinstall Mail just yet.
I'm having the same problem at work. I'm starting to suspect it is an issue with 10.4.8.
Up until yesterday I could start new accounts, but they couldn't receive mail. Today I can't install a new account at all.
I can set up Exchange accounts, however, through Mail.
What exactly happens when you try to activate the POP account.

Cannot view new emails via mail

I Have an iPad 4. Until the 16/11/14 I had no problems. Now, my mail icon indicates x number of new messages, but when I open the app nothing downloads. It says downloading 1 of 66, for example, then says checking for email then says last updated and is done. I have already tried removing and reinstalling the account.

Quit Mail, then In your home folder, try moving this folder to the Desktop then reboot...

Cannot Establish New Connection

Hello all, I have quite a peculiar problem regarding the what I've come to find fairly common error, "Network Adapter could not establish the connection."
Now, before you close the tab/page/browser, hear me out -- I've looked through at least two dozen threads with this topic, but none share the same situation I have, and none have supplied any help whatsoever.
I'm a college student in a databasing class of 12 other students, where the instructor created a sql developer setup batch file and package, so that all copies of SQL Developer would be absolutely identical. As well, all machines within this classroom are absolutely identical as well, being imaged school harddrives in identical hardware computers. Within the classroom environment, we use database connections on localhost for the purpose of training. The instructor wrote the batch file to set the listener and start the service. Somehow, I receive the above error while no other person within the room has a problem.
I have verified that the listener is set to listen on localhost and port 1521, and that I am connecting to localhost and port 1521.
- I have attempted changing the listening port.
- I have attempted changing the listening IP to 127.0.01, this machine's network IP, this machine's internet IP, this machine's name, and this machine's qualified domain name.
I have verified that the listener service is operating.
- I have attempted stopping and starting the service.
- I have attempted changing the service to manual startup, rebooting the computer, and restarting manually.
I have verified that the network adapter is operational.
- Used Ipconfig /release and /renew
- Can ping self, as well as all other computers in room.
- Can ping the default gateway
- Can tracert the default gateway
- Have DNS connectivity
I also attempted a fresh copy downloaded from oracle on my personal laptop, and manually used the same settings as the instructor prescribed. I received the same error, where I attempted all items in the above list to no avail. I then moved to another machine in the room, which also did nothing, and finally I moved to a machine that another student had already used, which worked fine.
Working at my own workstation now, I finally attempted simply running as administrator, which attained the same error, and I rolled back my version of Java, which still received the same error.
At this point, I have exhausted everything I know to do, and am quickly becoming frustrated. Neither my workstation nor another unused computer within the room work. My personal laptop not connecting doesn't bother me. If anyone at all has any advice whatsoever, I'm all ears. I'd even make sure it's plugged in at this point.

Windows XP is now 3 generations back, so this memory is growing dim, but if that is the OS version used in your class, then the problem could be related to lack of a loopback adapter. Here are a couple of (older) links that mention it:

Cannot connect new mail

Hi there,
Here is what happened today, i had to add 2 phones to the BES, one of them worked fine within 5 mins it was on, the other one (my boss's phone) oh well lets say it took me around 3 hours to do it (ITS A LAW, had him nagging all the time). So how it went, I did a backup of my boss's phone(as he wanted to use it instead of brand new one) wiped the data, tried with the enterprise activation, the phone wasn't happy, got it back to the initial configuration, added it to the server, it took good 1 hour to synchronize and it went all good, until 10 minutes before the working day ends... he comes out of his office shouting how he cannot connect to the other mail that he had. Of course first thing that comes to my mind is that he had another configuration through another company and start to think all the possible complicated ways to hook him up to the other company (he runs two companies), anyways it turned out to be that there is just an additional e-mail. Easy job, I go to the settings, and it prompts him for his blackberry ID, and because it is a law... he didn't remember his credentials and at the same time he was nagging that he has maximum 10 minutes more. Anyways sorted that one out, went to "add other e-mail" as it wasn't neither gmail nor yahoo or any other of the options. Asked him politely to add his e-mail and password. When he tries to connect, it says cannot reach the server, or cannot connect to the server, something like that, afterwards when we tried again it was saying wrong acc name/password (of course he was sure he typed them correctly, so i persuaded him to type them again) and then we got the same error that he cannot connect to the server. Anyways the 10 mins passed and he had to go, unhappy. Now , while i was still at the office adding and removing emails on my phone happily without any problems I came up with the solution that his 3G receiver is f*cked up, and when it tries to connect to the server it just loses signal, and that seems the only reason why i wouldnt be able to add his other e-mail, so therefore Monday when he comes I will connect him through the internal network and then try that again. Now, my question is, presume that doesn't work, what will happen if I restore his phone from the initial back up that i created before i hook him up to the BES, will it change the settings in terms of ... will it create that other e-mail and will it keep the same configuration for the BES account ?

Hi and Welcome to the Community!!
Actually, what you need to do is the following steps, in order, even if they seem redundant to what you have already tried (steps 1 and 2 each should result in a message coming to your BB...please wait for that before proceeding to the next step):
1) Register HRT
KB00510 How to register a BlackBerry smartphone with the wireless network
Please wait for one "registration" message to arrive to your Messages app
2) Delete and Resend Service Books
KB05000Delete the service book for the BlackBerry Internet Service email account from the BlackBerry smartphone
If you have no CMIME entry, then skip the deletion
KB02830 Send the service books for the BlackBerry Internet Service
Please wait for "Activation" Messages, one per already configured email account, to arrive in your Messages. If you have no already configured email accounts, please wait 1 hour.
3) Batt Pull Reboot
Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
That should get his prior BIS-level email accounts placed back onto his BB...unless the BIS configuration was somehow deleted (from what you described, that should not have happened though). You may want to also restore from that backup, but don't do a wholesale restore...just a selective one of the databases that are necessary (and NONE that are handled by BES):

If you do a wholesale restore, it will overwrite the databases that have to do with the BES configuration, which will indeed mess that up. You also will be unable to restore the Messages database at all since BES is now active...the restore will replace the entire Messages database with what was there before, which will kill any BES messages already populated to his BB.

I cannot get new E-mail after lion 10.7.5

I have been using Lion 10.7.2 and updated to 10.7.5 and now I cannot receive new E-mail, Can send ok

Check your SMTP settings in Mail. Make sure your email account you use is selected. Mail / Preferences / Accounts. Click the drop down for Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) and select Edit SMTP Server List. Make sure the server name is correct under the Account Information tab. Click the Advanced tab and make sure your Authentication, User Name and Password are correct.
I know for me after updating to 10.7.5, I had to reenter my account password for SMTP.

Cannot add new mail Account or iCal account

When I try to add a new Mail account (press " + " on the Mail -> Preferences -> Account tab) it temporarily darkens but nothing happens. Pressing "+" in iCal -> Preferences -> Accounts does not have an effect either.
Unlike in the case of other posters neither Mail nor iCal crashes. It just simply does not respond. At present I have two Mail accounts (created in an earlier version, probably Tiger) and no iCal account.
So far I have tried the following:
1) Press "Add account ..." in the File menue instead of pressing the "+" button. Result: No effect.
2) Use disk utility to repair permissions. Result: No effect.
3) Quit Mail; Move ~/Library/Mail, ~/Library/Mail Downloads, ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist to the Desktop; Restart the Computer; Open Mail. Result: New Mail folders are created in ~/Library, a new com.apple.mail.plist is created. My .me account information is automatically recognized but I still cannot create another account, even not my second account that worked before.
4) Create a new user. Result: For the new user I can create at least 3 Mail accounts.
Obviously there is something wrong with my current user account, though I am not aware of any other symptoms. Any ideas how this can be repaired?

Try a reset. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. This will not affect your data. The phone will reboot.

Cannot read or create any new Notes in Mail

As per previous post, my 4 out of 6 notes from my iPhone synced with Mail some months ago (since 3.1 OS uprade).
BUT, I've never been able to open those Notes, or even create new Notes in Mail on my Mac. To Do's seem to be ok, but not Notes.
Managed to setup MobileMe Mail on Mail on my Mac now too (refused all yesterday). I'm also bringing in Hotmail there too.
Any ideas?

Try this - find the /Library/Preferences folder in your user/Home folder and then locate and delete this file:
com.apple.mail.plist
*Caution* - doing this may clear your account settings to be sure to note those first in the event you are required to reconfigure, etc.
And be sure to verify/repair permissions using Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities folder)

How to amend Rules in Mail

I am using Mail on my Mac and also have it configured on my iPhone and iPad.
I have an alias e-mail address and set up a rule for any mails to that e-mail address to go straight into a specific folder (mailbox) within Mail.
I am now trying to amend the rule but cannot access it.
I have tried via Mail > Preferences but no rules are displayed.
I have also tried to delete the folder and then send a test mail to the e-mail address, but when the mail arrives in the inbox it just creates a new folder again.
How can I amend the rule in Mail?

1. Why can't I access icloud.com on my iPad? (to effect the change, I had to use my Mac to go to icloud.com)
2. Can the e-mail alias addresses be colour coded so that I can easily identify incoming mail?

Cannot see new SQL 2008 R2 Express instance on Small Business Server 2011!

As it is stated on the subject line, I'm having a problem after I did a new install of SQL 2008 R2 Express and put a new instance on SBS 2011.
I'm developing a new program using SQL 2008 in C# and VB.Net. I have SQL 2008 R2 Express installed on my computer called "MSQL8R2EDATA" on my PC. Now I need to deploy it on SBS 2011 so I can do some testing on other workstations.
I'm currently running Windows 7, 64 bit, and it's named STEVE-PC. The SBS 2011 is named SERVER1, and it's 64 bit as well.
After installation on SERVER1 (SBS 2011), I then fired up SQL Server Configuration Manager and enabled Named Pipes, TCP/IP, and VIA.
After I've completed the SQL Configuration on SERVER1, I went back on my PC (STEVE-PC) and I tried to use Management Studio to connect to the new instance MSQL8R2EDATA on SBS 2011, only problem is, I only see the computer name, not the new instance
I've installed.
Back on SBS 2011 (SERVER1), I've verified that all the protocols are enabled, and the SQL Server Browser is automatically loaded and currently running, as well the MSQL8R2EDATA instance is automatically loaded and running, yet I still cannot see
it from my PC (STEVE-PC). I even switched from dynamic ports to a static port of 64719 (that was what the MSQL8R2EDATA was listening on that port when it was dynamic), and then added new rules to the Windows Firewall for program of the SQLSERVR.EXE, and
for UDP and TCP for port 64719 to "Allow All Connections" for Domain, Private, and Public; yet I still cannot connect SERVER1\MSQL8R2EDATA. I even disabled the firewall and then trying to connect once again to SBS 2001 and it still fails.
In case you're wondering, I left it on port 64719 since there are other active SQL Servers on SBS 2011 (SharePoint, SBSMonitoring, and ACT7).
Interestingly, when I run Management Studio on SBS 2011, I can see STEVE-PC\MSQL8R2EDATA and I'm able to log in and connect to it.
So what's going on here?!? Why am I able to connect to STEVE-PC which is Windows 7 64 from SBS 2011 (SERVER1), but I cannot connect from my computer to that instance on SBS 2011??
I really could use some big time help on this.
EDIT: Sorry for the confusion, but on the Windows Firewall (WF.msc), I did add new rules for incoming connections on:
Program incoming connections to SQLSERVR.EXE
TCP Port 64719
UDP Port 64719
EDIT: To further assist, I have Management Studio installed on the SBS 2011, and I can locally log in and connect to the MSQL8R2DATA on SERVER1 with success. I even tried tcp:SERVER1\MSQL8R2DATA and again it is successful log-in and connection.

Installing SQL Express or SQL Server is not recommended on SBS
2011 because it is a DC, however technically it will work.
I'm a newbie when it comes to SBS 2011 and I'm taking a crash course on the subject. Can you explain to me what you mean by "DC"? Also, why
isn't recommended to install a new instance on SBS 2011?
As I also stated, I've added "New Rules" to the Windows Firewall to allow incoming connections on port 64719 for both TCP and UDP, and I also allowed incoming connections for SQLSERVR.EXE but no joy to connect to the SERVER1\MSQL8R2EDATA.
And yes, I can log-in and connect locally on SERVER1 using Management Studio with success. I even used tcp:SERVER1\MSQL8R2EDATA with the same success. It's my workstation STEVE-PC that fails. If that fails, then the rest of the workstations are going to fail.
Are you suggesting that I put the SQL Server 2008 Express on another workstation and just allow to to be
accessed that way?

Office 2013 - Word cannot establish a connection with this document after the system resumed from suspend mode

This issue has been answered numerous times for Office 2010 and Office 2007, but I have yet to any solutions or Hotfixes that work for Office 2013 (x64) on Win7.
How to replicate the issue:
Open a file from a network share.
Edit file.
Leave computer on with file open. Computer goes to sleep or into stand-by mode.
Wait a bit
Wake up computer
CPU opens file in Read-Only mode and gives you the following error "Word cannot establish a network connection with this document after the system resumed from suspend mode. Save the document into a different file to keep any changes."
What I've tried:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2434898 - Office 2007 registry fixes. Does not apply.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2413659 - Office 2010 problem. This exact issue. Says 'No microsoft products that match this hotfix are installed'
Work Around:
I can saving new versions of these files overrides this issue, but this is sometimes not possible for end-users who only have specific access to ONE SPECIFIC FILE in a particular network share.
Please let me know how I can alleviate this issue!
