Cannot Find MacBook IP via the Internet

Have a Mac Mini. Recently bought my mom a MacBook. She's not tech savvy, so I configured her machine so that I can login remotely using the built-in OS X sharing capabilities. Configured both computers on my home wireless network, and got everything to work perfectly -- even the Chicken of the VNC app, which allows me to remotely control her desktop if there's a problem. Very easy to find and connect to her machine.
Here's the issue: Once I setup her machine in upstate New York with Verizon's new FIOS broadband service, I can no longer find her computer and make a connection -- no matter what IP address I attempt to use. Her local IP address is a generic 192.168.1.2 -- firewall is turned off.
Any general advice regarding how I can find/connect to my mother's computer via the internet? Using Finder > Connect, it merely requests an IP address, but I get the feeling I need to link to her router, then her local computer -- two IP addresses.
Sorry for lengthy question, but figure this is fairly routine. Maybe not. Thanks!

I'm not clear on what you're using. Do you have Apple Remote Desktop (which is the subject of this forum)? Or are you just using VNC?
If you do indeed have ARD, in her router, you need to open TCP and UDP port 3283 and TCP and UDP port 5900 and then forward those same ports to the internal IP address used by her Mac. For encrypted file transfer (ARD 3, if that's what you have), you also need to open and forward TCP port 22. You may also need to open and forward TCP (and perhaps UDP) 5988 and 5989, though it's not clear under what circumstances this will be necessary; some people have reported those as being required, though Apple doesn't list them as being used by ARD.
Then in ARD on your end, you need to use the IP address that the router picks up from her Internet provider.
The procedure for VNC is the same, but you just open port 5900.
Forum Tip: Since you're new here, you've probably not discovered the Search feature available on every Discussions page, but next time, it might save you time (and everyone else from having to answer the same question multiple times) if you search a couple of ways for a topic, both in the relevant forums, in the User Tips Library and in the Apple Knowledge Base before you post a question.
Regards.

On the iPad tap Settings > iCloud
Toggle Documents & Data off then back on then restart your iPad.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button down until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
On the iMac open System Preferences > iCloud
Deselect the box next to Documents & Data then reselect it then restart your iMac.

  • Can I connect remotely to my AirPort Extreme via the Internet?

I would like to connect to the AirPort Extreme at my home when I'm on the road via the Internet and access the USB drive attached to the Extreme. The Extreme is connected to my existing DSL modem, so I can't / don't want to use the PPP dial-up mode.
Any guidance from the community would be appreciated!

The following are the basic steps to configure access to an AirPort Disk from the Internet. Note: These instructions assume that the AirPort is the only router in your network configuration. That is, it is directly connected to the Internet modem and there are no routers upstream of it.
Start the AirPort Utility > Select the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn,) and then, note the IP address shown.
    Select Manual Setup.
Verify that Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address is selected on the Internet > Internet Connection tab.
Select Disks, and then, select File Sharing.
Verify that both the "Enable file sharing" and "Share disks over WAN" options are enabled.
Verify that Secure Shared Disks = With a disk password. (Recommended)
Verify that AirPort Disks Guest Access = Not allowed. (Recommended)
Select Advanced, and then, select the Port Mapping tab.
Click the plus sign to add a new port mapping.
For Service, select the "Personal File Sharing" option. (Note: This option would only allow Mac clients to access the AirPort Disks. If you want both Macs and PCs to connect, you would need to leave this field at its default value and enter the appropriate SMB ports to the mix of ports to be opened.)
In the Public UDP Port(s) and Public TCP Port(s) boxes, type in a 4-digit port number (e.g., 8888) that you choose. In the Private IP Address box, type the internal IP address of your AEBSn that you wrote down in step 1. In the Private UDP Port(s) and Private TCP Port(s) boxes, type 548. Click Continue.
In the Description box, type a descriptive name like "AirPort Disk File Sharing," and then, click Done.
    Click on Update.
To connect to the shared AirPort Disk from a remote location using a Mac:
From the Finder > Go > Connect to Server.
Enter the DynDNS-provided Domain Name or Pubic (WAN-side) IP address of the AEBSn, followed by a colon and the Public port number that you choose in step 11 of the previous procedure. For example: afp://www.mydyndnsdomain.com:8888 or afp://123.456.789.123:8888
    Click Connect.
You should be prompted for your user name and password. The user name can be anything you like; the password should be the Disk password for the AEBSn that you created in step 6 previously.
    Click Connect.

  • Since downloading and installing the current update of Yosemite on my MacBook Air using the Internet on my Hevanet server has become a rather useless effort due to unreasonable slowness

Since downloading and installing Yosemite 10.10 on my MacBook Air, using the Internet via Safari on my Hevanet server has become a rather useless effort due to unreasonable slowness and frequent Gmail crashes when I actually do manage to get through to the Internet.

    What exactly is crashing?

  • Ugh tI have gray thumbnails of my photos. I cannot find my photos through the finder. what do I do?

I have gray thumbnails of my photos. I cannot find my photos through the finder. what do I do?

I have gray thumbnails of my photos. I cannot find my photos through the finder.
    Gray thumbnils:
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the options to rebuild the thumbnails. It may take three or four goes to work.
Finding the Photos through the Finder.
It's not supported. Accessing the files via the Finder can lead to a corrupted Library.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Remote streaming via the Internet & SlingBox

    Apple TV
I would like to stream Direct TV video & audio from a remote location via the Internet using a SlingBox (also at the remote location) to a MacBook Pro. I would then like to stream the received video/audio from the MacBook Pro via a Time Capsule to an Apple TV unit and from the Apple TV to a plasma screen using an HDMI cable from the Apple TV to the Plasma screen. There is a high-speed Internet modem and wireless router at both locations.
Is this possible? If not, why? What may I be missing & what would I need to make this work? Would a Mac Mini be a better choice for this application? Is 1280x720 the maximum Resolution possible?
    Thanks,
    Steve

In any case, unless the remote site has a fast upload link to the internet don't expect the video to look very good once it is received and displayed on your TV. SlingBox quality is okay when running totally within your high-speed local network but as soon as you have to stream out over the internet the quality can fall off rather noticeably. On a typical broadband internet connection you might only have 300kbps to 500kbps on the upload side. This means that the video you get on the other end will probably be no larger than 320x240 or maybe even less. Furthermore, unless you want to suffer intermittent pauses and delays in the transmitted video you may even have to go to lower resolutions and/or even higher compression levels.

  • How do I connect my MacBook pro to the Internet through the 3G server on my iPhone?

Does anyone know how to connect my MacBook pro to the Internet through the 3G server on my iPhone?

There is a service called Personal Hotspot that uses your iPhone's connection to share with other devices. You will need to sign up for this service through your carrier. Good luck

I forgot my icloud id and password. i want to delete the id. i forgot the password. if i try to delete the account its asking for password. i cannot find how to delete the account. Please anyone can help me out???

You aren't going to be able to delete it without the correct password.  If it's your ID, you can reset the password as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5625.  If it isn't your ID, you will have to get the password for the person who owns the ID.  There's no way around this and no one else can help.
