Cannot find my airport express

I just bought an Airport Express that I want to hook up to my stereo.  My Mac cannot find the device.  I am right next to the wireless router in my house.  My computer is in the internet. So the network in my house is fine. I have unplugged the Airport Express. I have reset to factory settings.  Nothing seems to work.  Ideas?

If you have reset the AirPort Express to factory settings, restart your Mac and click the AirPort icon at the top of the screen.
Wait a few seconds, then click on AirPort Express just under New AirPort Base Station to get the process started.

  • Airport Utility cannot find my Airport express on Windows 7

I have a working Airport express with a static ip address.  The static ip address has been hard coded in my main router.  The airport express is connected to my network via ethernet cable. Airport Express Version 7.6.1.  I am having conectivity issues from my new Windows Desktop.  The airport utility 5.6.1 on my new desktop cannot find my airport express.  The manual setup button has been greyed out.  I can ping the device.  I can click on "configure other" and configure the airport-express (which is how I set it up).    If I reboot my desktop and then quickly fire up the airport utility, it finds the device.  On hitting rescan, in a few minutes everything gets greyed out again.
The airport utiltity on other computers is able to find that airport express.   I am able to stream music through the airport express from other computers in the network.
How do I find out what is blocking the airport utility on my new desktop.  The Bonjour Service is up and running.   Any help/advice on trouble shooting this issue is appreciated.

You only need one computer on the network to access the settings in the AirPort, so unless you like to look for things, it is probably not worth the effort to try to troubleshoot the blocking action on the Windows 7 machine.
It is not always the Windows Firewall and/or the anti-virus program that blocks connection attempts like this, but that would be the first place to look.
In general, you have to get into the Firewall settings to create an "exception" for the AirPort connection. The same would be true for the anti-virus if that is what is blocking the connection attempt between the PC and AirPort.

  • Airport utility cannot find my Airport Express, repeated rescans, nothing, even with direct connect via Ethernet. Help!

I use Airport Express to stream iTunes to my home stereo. This is the ONLY thing I use it for. It quit working and now Airport Utility cannot find the Airport Express unit, even after repeated re-boots of all components, resetting the Airport Express, even when connected directly to my router via Ethernet. I use a D-Link wirless router.
I downloaded the latest Airport Utility, but it will NOT work with XP (from the Apple website, not my words).
The Airport Express will achieve a solid green indicator after reset, but Airport Utility cannot find it. Until Utility can find and recognize the Airport Express hardware, I cannot adjust or reset any settings, etc.
    Help!

I downloaded the latest Airport Utility, but it will NOT work with XP (from the Apple website, not my words).
The latest version of AirPort Utility.....5.6.1.....will only run on a Windows 7 machine.
Try AirPort Utility 5.5.3 for Windows (make sure that  you have Service Pack 3 installed on your PC, otherwise the application will not run on an XP machine).
The Airport Express will achieve a solid green indicator after reset, but Airport Utility cannot find it.
After a "hard reset" or "factory default reset", the light will not be green.....it will be slowly flashing amber after it restarts. See this Apple support document for more information on various resets:

  • Airport utility cannot find my Airport Express

Neither my iMac nor my Macbook running OS X 10.5.8 are able to connect to my Airport Express via Airport Utility. When I start AU, I get the message:
AirPort Utility was unable to find any Apple wireless devices
Both machines (as well as an iPhone and iPod Touch) are able to use the network I have already set up on the AE, but I am no longer able to connect to the AE itself to see and modify configuration settings. I believe this is relatively new misbehavior - I have successfully connected to the AE via AU at least once in the last 4 months.
I have tried unplugging the AE for 30 seconds and plugging it back in, but to no avail.
Thanks in advance for any help the good folks here can provide...

I have been having the same problem since returning from vacation a week ago. All computers have MAC OS 10.5.8 (2 powerbooks, 1 macbook, and 1 iMac). They see the Airport Extreme w/ 802.11g (v 5.7) and the two time capsules (v 7.4.2). One Airport Express works intermittently (green to flashing amber) - the other Airport Express is on flashing amber all them time. The Airport Utility will see the one AE when it is green, but only then. I've unplugged them and pushed/held the reset button for 15 sec while plugging back in, I have connected the AExpress to the AExtreme via ethernet cable - I forgot the results of that as I have tried many permutations. As this seems to be a hot topic, did something recently happen within an update that has caused this?

  • Aiport Utility cannot find my Airport Express

I purchased and set up an Airport Extreme, then extended my network using an Airport Express.  It has been working fine for 6 months or more. Today, I changed the password on my wireless network via Airport Utility 6.3.4 and now ... the Airport Extreme still works fine and I am connecting to the internet, but my Express stopped working and now has a blinking amber light. I moved it next to my Extreme, did a soft, then hard reset, and have done the power reset (turned it all off and turned it back on in order giving a minute or more between devices in the network).  My Extreme is still working, but my Express still has a blinking amber light and is not found by my Airport Utility.  Thus, I cannot extend my network. I am very frustrated and I need some help. Please.  I am now using Yosemite. And I believe my Airport Express is a 2nd generation but I am not sure how I can tell.

With the AirPort Express powered on, hold in the reset button on the back of the Express for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Open AirPort Utility and wait a minute
Click the Other WiFi Devices tab
    Click on AirPort Express
The setup utility will open up and guide you through
If you have an iPhone or iPad.....
Tap Settings on the home screen
    Tap WiFi
Under the heading of Set Up a New Base Station, tap on AirPort Express
The setup utility will open up and guide you through
The next time that you want to change the password on the wireless network, you need to remember to change the password on the Express first, and then power it off.
Then change the password on the AirPort Extreme
When you power the Express back up, it will join the network correctly

  • Cannot Set Up Airport Express

    Hi there,
I have connected everything and all seems to be green lit. The problem I have is that I cannot find my Airport Express (or any device really) when I open Airport Utility in order to set up the network. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

I had a similar problem before when moving between networks. I used the AEX to extend my home network, so before leaving for my office (which uses another network) I have to remember to reset the AEX to the work network. Otherwise my AEX will be undetectable. Alternatively you could do a hard reset on your AEX and create a new network.

  • Cannot configure my AirPort Express (1st generation) anymore. Am using AirPort Utility 5.4.2 Setup Assistant. What do I do wrong?

I cannot configure my AirPort Express (1st generation) as base Station anymore. I had to reset it because I lost my password.
I first tried my IPads (IOS 6). These returned the message: Your AirPort Express cannot be configured with this software. Go to apple.com/nl/support/airport for more information.
As it is an old one, I have downloaded the eldest available AirPort Utility I could find on the Apple site (AirPort utility 5.4.2) to my computer. I ran the AirPort Setup Assistant wireless and the assistant found my AirPort named " Apple Network XXXXX". (I notes that the Assistant also returned the message: If this is not the AirPort Extreme you want to set up ...)
    I clicked <NEXT>
After trying to connect to Network, I received the message: Cannot connect to network or there are no AirPort base stations on the network.
To be sure I retried running the Assistant after connecting the computer and the AirPort using an ethernet cable. The error message was the same.
    What do I do wrong?
Am I using the wrong Utility software? If so, which version do I have to download and from where?
Is a first generation AirPort anyhow compatible wth 4the generation IPads or shoud I just buy a new AirPort.
I hope someone can help me...

Ok, thanks for clarifying that for me. You are correct. Your iOS devices will NOT be able to administer the 802.11g base stations because the version of the AirPort Utility that they use is incompatible.
For Windows XP, AirPort Utility for Windows v5.5.3 should work. However, v5.4.2 that you have should work as well.
Your XP computer needs to connect to the AirPort's wireless network BEFORE you can access the AirPort with the AirPort Utility. You may want to try connecting your computer directly to the AirPort using an Ethernet cable.

  • AirPort Utility doesn't find my AirPort Express but wireless still works

I'm having problems configuring my AirPort Express. My main computer is a desktop running Windows XP and is connected to the internet via a Netgear router. I have the AirPort wired to the same router. I used the AirPort Utility to set up the AirPort originally but now the utility program can't find the AirPort. The wireless is still working as my macbook can still connect to the internet and the green light on the AirPort remains on. The macbook can also use the AirTunes function of iTunes while the desktop cannot. I've updated AirPort Utility to the most recent version without any luck. I assume its more to do with the router but I'm far from a network expert. Any ideas? Thanks.

I'm having this exact same problem. I am using an HP notebook computer running Windows XP. My computer can connect just fine via wireless to the Airport Express. However, the Airport Utility cannot see the Airport Express no matter what I try. I have downloaded all the latest versions of software. I have tried doing a soft reset of the Airport Express. I have tried doing a hard reset of the Airport Express. I have tried resetting Airport Express defaults back to factory settings. I have tried connecting to Airport Express via Ethernet cable attached to my router. I have tried configuring a fixed IP address in the same range as the default IP address settings for the Airport Express. None of this gives me the ability for the Airport Utility to see the Airport Express. Any help please.

Reason: Airport Utility cannot find my Airport Extreme (4th generation) wirelessly on my Time Capsule configured network even although the firmware in both units is up to date.

I thought you were trying to Extend the network with an Express as the article mentions you pointed to...
You can't find the Airport Extreme then...
I woudl suggest doing a Factory reset....
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3728
Then you should be able to set it up just as you did when it was new....
Factory default reset (using reset button)
If the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule isn't accessible from AirPort Utility, the Factory Default reset can be accomplished by using the reset button.
Unplug the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule from power.
Press and hold the reset button with a pen or pencil, then plug the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule back in while continuing to hold the button until you see the light (LED) flash rapidly. This should happen after a few seconds.
Release the button. This will factory default reset the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule.

  • Cannot configure the Airport Express

I connected my Airport Express to my router (not an Extreme Base station). I got the solid green light, I can see the network wirelessly and I can access the internet with no problems.
The problem is that I cannot access the Airport Express in order to configure it (I want to add some filtering and some additional security). The Setup Assistant is searching for an Extreme Base Station which it cannot find (since I do not have one) and so does the Airport Admin util.
Is there a way (or perhaps a different configuration utility for Win XP) to configure the Airport Express?
    Thx
      Windows XP

Thanks for the help. I was out of the country for a few weeks but now I am back trying to resolve the problem. Nothing helps, the Airport Express "insists" on the fact that it cannot find a base Station. I am not sure what else is there to do and I am closed to go back to my old 802.11b D-Link wireless router. Do you have any other idea that may resolve the problem?
On another note, why does there have to be any connection between the Airport Express and any base station? Why can’t I configure the Airport Express without being connected to any basestation?

  • My airport utility does not find my airport express device

My airport utility does not find my airport express device

In order for the AirPort Utility on your iOS device to find the Express, both need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. By default, the Express will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a network name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN. Can you iOS device find this network?

I'm not sure what you mean. You can't find the express to set it up.. or you can't find the network created by the express?

  • I cannot get my Airport Express to accept wireless clients.

I cannot get my Airport Express to accept wireless clients. After resetting to factory default and reconfiguring, it works briefly but then stops again.
The Airport Express is on the second floor of my house and is seen by Airport Utility. Using a LAN cable with the Express works no problem.
My network is created by an Airport Extreme (ground floor) and extended by a Time Capsule (first floor)
Have run through all settings repeatedly and as I said I can get it to work briefly by resetting and then reconfiguring, but after a short while again my iOS devices can no longer connect and revert to cellular.

The issue is most likely due to the fact that the AirPort Express may be too far from the AirPort Extreme to properly extend it with enough bandwidth to be useful.
It is important to understand that with Apple 802.11n or 802.11ac base station an extended network works in a wheel-like fashion with the base station to be extended at the hub and each extending base station along one of the spokes. This type of configuration does not allow for daisy chaining the base stations. That is, in your case, both the Time Capsule and AirPort Express are attempting to extend the AirPort Extreme.
Each extending base station must be within a certain signal quality range in order to extend the network properly. Please check out the following AirPort User tip for details.
