Cannot force quit itunes

Recently, starting with version 4.8 on some occasions itunes will 1. appear to quit when quitting but if I try to open it again I find itunes has not quit it only looks like it has. The menu at the top shows it as a running application, the little triangle in the dock shows it as a running application hold down the mouse and the message "Application not responding" and force quit as an option yet when I force quit from either the dock or keyboard itunes will not and does not quit. After several attempts to force quit I have to restart a royal pain!!! What in the wide wide world of sports is going on here?

Michael hello,
welcome to the Apple Discussions there is something else running that wants to use iTunes, shut down 1st and then quit...
The most likely candidates will be the iTunes widget in dashboard or a plugin or another program or script... use Activity Monitor from Utilities and show 'active Processes' this will tell you what is running...
take care Michael.... TP

  • I have an iPod Classic and when I try to move songs from my library to my iPod, my iTunes freezes. When I tried to eject my iPod, nothing happened and I had to force quit iTunes. When I unplugged my iPod, all of my songs had been deleted. What can I do?

After attempting to move songs from my iTunes library to my iPod Classic, the pinwheel kept spinning and iTunes froze. I tried pressing CTRL E to eject the iPod, but nothing happened. I unplugged the iPod then force quit iTunes, but when I checked my iPod all of the songs had been deleted. I tried plugging the iPod back in and slowly moved music over again, but iTunes still froze. I don't want to restore it to factory settings because I am afraid of losing the pictures I have on there and can't figure out how to get them off.

    Are you using a Macbook?
If all your songs on the iPod are deleted, most likely the photios are gone too.
Unless you put the photos, via Diskmode.
To recover the photos that you've put in Diskmode, use Finder to locate where it is in the iPod.
Try also if iPhoto can locate those photos.

  • Imac freezing and cannot force quit

  • After force quitting iTunes, now my phone is "in use" by another user

OK, here's what just happened to me tonight. I had the "beach ball of death" in iTunes, so I used a force quit. Now when I plug in my week old iPhone 4, I'm getting the message that this phone is already in use by another user on this computer. Huh?!? For one thing, I am the ONLY user although I do have a "guest" account, but I'm logged in on my regular account.
I've tried restarting iTunes, same message. Every time I plug in the phone it's doing it now. So, how am I supposed to sync my phone now?
Has anyone else had this problem after force quitting iTunes? Any ideas?

Nope, tried that, didn't work. 3 complete reboots didn't worked either. However, on the 4th complete computer reboot, it worked!! I don't know why, but I'm happy that I can sync again.
I guess it just reinforces the old, "if at first you don't succeed...."

  • "Blocked Plug-in"  cannot force quit

I have an application called "Kidzui"  that I use to let my kids browse the internet.  Today I upgraded from 10.6.8 to  Mountain Lion, I'm assuming since I got it out of the app store today, that it is the latest version of Mountain Lion.
When I launch Kidzuii, the application uses the entire screen, but now displays the words "Blocked Plug-in".  Some research revealed that this issue is likly caused by an older version of Adobe Flash.  However; here is the problem.
I cannot force-quit the application.  I have read a bunch of handy articles on using short cut keys to force quit an application.  None of them work.  The cherry on top is that when I power off the machine, it restarts and very helpfully launches the exact same applications that I had open before, which immediatly puts me right back where I was.
Does anyone have any ideas?  I can't get to anything and even a power off and restart isn't helping.  The caps lock key still functions, and the mouse works well too.

    Andi

Select  ▹ Force Quit from the menu bar, then select the frozen application from the list and press return.

I too am facing this problem, however a little differently. I am in the process of uploading my vinyl collection to digital format in Audacity and am having this problem with multiple tracks when played in iTunes. The first few albums I ripped play just fine in iTunes, but the last few skip over about the last minute of every song and go to the next song. As you said, if you drag the time marker past the skipping point though, the rest of the song will play to the end just fine. I then synced these songs onto my iPod and they play perfectly straight through. I was leaning toward a bad mp3 encoding process that was maybe creating a glitch but I'm not sure at this point if they play correctly on my iPod. In quicktime the song will just stop playing at that specfic point, but if you hit play again, it will continue to the end. I can say though, I haven't seen this problem with any iTunes download, or ripped CD that I have ever put into iTunes (which makes my situation a tad different than yours), it's been purely the songs that I have imported via Audacity from LP's.

Is there an option that someone knows about that would keep this from happening?
no, if iTunes can't find its drive/folder, it defaults to creating one within your Home directory's Music folder.
If anyone knows a way I send a product suggestions to apple please let me know, as I have a few that would like to suggest.
under the iTunes menu choose the Feedback menuItem.

Try deleting all your music by going into settings>general>usage>music. Then re-download them from iTunes by going in to iTunes on your iPhone>more>purchased>music.

  • Why do I have to Force Quit iTunes so often?

On my old G3 iBook I remember I had to Force Quit iTunes (can't remember which ancient version that was) sometimes when it 'froze' after I clicked a new track title on a CD that was in the Drive.
In iTunes 6, this never ever ever ever ever ever happened. Never. Not once. Ever. I silently congratulated Apple on eliminating that annoying particular little glitch.
Now I've recently downloaded iTunes 7 - it's happening again !! Several times when I click to play a different track on a CD in the drive, I get "iTunes (not responding)" and I have to Force Quit. This is REALLY REALLY annoying. Why has this old fault returned?
(btw I just saw the thread below mine, about iTunes needing Force Quit after playing 2 tracks on a CD? This is NOT the same fault. iTunes will happily PLAY a whole CD without complaining - the problem occurs after I double-click to play a different track while another one is still playing.)

FWIW, I have had a similar problem, where iTunes froze on random songs at two seconds into the song. I would have to force quit, then restart. This occurred when I put in a CD to play from the beginning, while I did other things. I have not witnessed your circumstances when clicking a new track to play. I do not do this often, except after I restarted iTunes to continue the CD.
I just deleted the com.apple.itunes.plist file in ~/Library/Preferences and so far, so good.

  • Updated to iTunes 11.2.1, phone won't sync and have to force quite iTunes.

    Hi,
I just updated iTunes to 11.2.1, as well as the most recent Lion (? at work, can't look up which OS or version) update for my MacBook. Now iTunes will open, but it will not sync with my phone (I have an iPhone 4, A1332), and won't iTunes won't close without a force quit.
My phone does sync to iPhoto, which leads me to believe it's a problem with the new iTunes.
I've seen quite a few posts close to this, but they have iTunes crashing rather than opening and not syncing.
Is there a fix for this, or a new version coming out soon?
How can I downgrade to a working iTunes? I didn't have time machine set up, is there another way to revert?
    Thanks

Sync now working. In Outlook, selected View, Current View, Events. Then View, Current View, Customize Current View, then Fields, all appointment fields, and moved reminder into the view. Then clicked every event that had a reminder, set the reminder to none, and eventually returned to the Day Week Month view. Next sync, all events synced both ways.
    Success. !!

  • OS X freezes whenever I cannot force quit an application

About twice a week I have an application that will hang. Usually when I close my MacBook Pro while the app is running.
The app will not quit or force quit, if I try to restart the OS, it hangs and I have to hold the power button down to shut it off.
I think I am on my 20th powerdown this way and it drives me nuts.
This is my first Mac and it has been like this the entire time.
Support has no answer form me other than reinstall everything. (BTW they wont support me since I reported the problem too late, how was I supposed to know this was unusual, I was using XP before and this was normal)
I also have Boot Camp with Vista 64 installed and it is perfect. The only time I reboot Vista is to boot OS X, which is soon to be never if I cannot get this fixed.
The machine is awesome but only Vista works correctly. Why is OS X the sucky one on Apple hardware?

There are 3rd-party wired keyboards which work well with Macs, and which can generate the standard suite of Mac shortcuts. This can be critical if you ever need to invoke certain commands at startup.
These are usually less expensive than the Apple-brand choices. Look for ones which state expilictly that they are Mac-compatible. Macally offers several models which are compatible with all Mac keyboard commands, including the startup set.

  • Have to force quit iTunes 98% of the time

It did not improve with iTunes 8.
Every time i go to the iTunes store (purchase or not) when I want to quit iTunes I get the beach ball and the fan kicks on until I force quit. Much of the time just listing to music the same thing occurs.
    Tips?

I'm also having a similar problem with iTunes 8.0.1 on Leopard 10.5.5
It consistently freezes when I'm using the iTunes Store. I'm usually able to browse the store and if I find what I'm looking for and make the purchase I can quit iTunes normally, if I leave the store before it freezes. If I wait for iTunes to freeze I'm unable to force quit, access the terminal, taskbar or anything else. I have to force the power off and reboot in order to use the computer again once I experience the freeze.
I had the good fortune to have two identical iMacs and have the problem on both. I've done a clean install on both computers and continue to have the problem on both after clean installs. The problem appeared shortly after the release of iTunes 8.0 on the first computer. I almost miss my Windows Vista Ultimate computer (almost).

  • Cannot "force quit" Maybe keychain problem?

It is becoming more than usual that an application freezes(safari for ex.)and when I try to force quit it cannot gather the system informations, After it cannot submit to apple the report. had the communication error code -600. Ultimately I did performed some changes at the keychain after I could not enter my administrator password. I wonder if that is the problem. Could anyone tell me how a normal keychain should look like I have a login, one with my name, one for the system and one for the system roots. All locked. Any other idea what could be the problem?
    Thank you

    lozee,
boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Are you now able to use the About This Mac, Restart…, or Shut Down… selections?
