Cannot Format Encrypted SD Card?
Hi guys,
I have an SD card, which I formatted as (Journaled, Encrypted), and forgot the password. Now I would like to use the card again, but I am not able to format it, because I cannot mount it on my Mac. Is there a way to do that?

Would not read my brand new 16gb Scandisk... nor the 8gb out of my ZeniTab.
It did read an old 2gb out of my old cell phone running Froyo.
So... I used the Zenith Tablet to "Erase" the 8gb - - then tried it in my Exite, and it WORKED!
So - - I took the NEW 16gb and erased it using my old tablet as well.
Everything works now.

How to Format an SD Card that won't mount?
This is the closest forum I could find for this, I have an SD Card which I used when taking photos on my Canon T1i on a family outing. I have pictures of my new born on there from the day. When I got home that day I immediately went to copy everything to my computer; however, the SD Card could not be read.
* It does not mount on any Mac (mini HDMI & eMac, internal slot & card reader that both worked previously - 16 GB card)
* The Canon says "Card Cannot Be Accessed" - when attempting to format I get "Cannot format. Change Card"
My hope was that I could initialize (ie: non-low level format) the SD Card then use one of the many apps out there to restore any recoverable data.
Question is... how do you format a card in a situation like this?
I was going to use my work laptop (PC) which had a card reader, insert a diff card, find the driver letter, then format h: /q (assuming h was the drive letter)... with a last second swap with the bunk card... but my laptops card reader isn't working at all (just found out when attempting this).
Are there any other ideas? I do know that the name of the card is "No Name" and I was hoping to format it via some terminal command or via some magical utility that I have yet to find.
My worst fear isn't to lose all the photos (that would suck bad), but that I would have to buy another card (I'm not up for the task of soldering a new controller chip to the memory). Also, the console does not come up with any error messages.

Then the problem's one that reformatting won't resolve.
I saw somewhere a command to format a HD that was not mounted; however, it was for a diff OS and the command didn't map (was a *nix variant).
Even if a volume's not mountable, the computer's aware of its presence and the Disk Utility list will show it as a grayed entry. The Disk Utility won't show network volumes, whether mounted or not.
Put a working card in the drive and check the Disk Utility again. If it shows up, consult a professional data recovery service. If it doesn't show up, the Disk Utility isn't designed to work on items of this kind; this may also be the case if only software provided by the manufacturer is capable of accessing it.

Satellite 2450-201: Cannot format 4GB card in SD card slot

I´m a Satellite 2450-201 owner and I have a big problem.
I just bought a 4GB SD memory card and nice, it fits on the side slot on my notebook.
It's the first time using the memory card, so a needs-to-format window appears when I try to access.
The Window has the right information : 3.78Gb, Fat32, ...
I Click "OK" and the Windows (XP SP2) informs : cannot complete format (here is portuguese, so it's translated to english)
If the right size is informed , 3.78Gb, why the Windows cannot format ?
My notebook is spyware and virus free (just 23 tasks running and under control), I Have SP2, Bios 1.50 (newer), My SD controller drivers is up-to-date (the last and the only one was released in 2003).
Also tried third party "Panasonic SDFormatter 2.0". It's reporting the unit (hardware) or the mem stick SD is not compatible with the program. And the same effect happens : the Sd unit lost the nice icon and I need to remove/insert the SD to see the same story again.

Its very strange that youre possible to see the SD card after plug-in. some people has suggested that this SD card slot supports only 256MB, 512MB cards and additionally with no MMC support.
I dont know if you have Toshiba SD card format utility installed on the laptop but on many Tosh notebooks such utility is preinstalled and could be used for the card formatting.
According to some posting in this forum the format utility of Portg M400 could handle the 2GB SD cards but not sure about 4GB.
If possible you could try to install this utility on your notebook but you know you have not big chances that this will work.
I think in such case only a external SD card reader will help you. -
I need to have encryption turned on on my phone because of my companies Exchange account policy. I did that without a problem. Now I just got an SD card and I would like to use it but the phone odes not accept it because it needs to be also encrypted. Unfortunately, when I follow the instruction on the phoe, the device restarts but never encrypts the card, getting the same "card needs to be encrypted" message after reboot. Any ideas?

Hi,
No you can't remove encryption without performing a factory reset of the phone. The factory reset will result in your not being able to access any data on the SD card if this is also encrypted - you will have to reformat the SD card in this case. This is unlike the Samsung Galaxy series where you can decrypt an encrypted device (not sure about the SD card though!)
If you are considering encryption please be aware of the issue I posted a few days ago wrt the Movies application - the phone will hang and need a reboot if you allow the screen to lock for any signifcant period with the Movies app running. Also be aware that the backup function included with PC companion does not work with encryption. You can however copy files using explorer to your PC.
Finally factory resetting (necessary to remove encryption) appears to invalidate any movies that you have previously downloaded due to DRM. You will have to download them again. Backing them up using Windows Explorer does not appear to work -

I have a SD card in my Q10 and I encrypted it.
A few days ago, there was a message after the Q10 was restarted "your media card was encrypted on another device. To usethe media card in this device, go to your Storage and Access settings and format the media card"
I did not take my SD card out of the Q10, so I don't understand why the the message comes up that the card was encrypted on another device.
Would appreciate any advice, I can see the files in the SD Card, but I can't open the files on my Q10 or on my PC.

You need the device in what it was encrypted in, and also the same OS, and that mean if the OS was reloaded or wiped then it will not work as the encryption key is in a protected file accessible to the OS only and it is created when you start the encryption.
To summerize, every time that you wiped or reload the OS, a new key is created in the device, and to be able to acces the data on the card after a wiped, you must first decrypt the card and then wipe/reload the OS or change the deivce

Cannot format micro sd, believe me, i tried everything
the same happened to me 4 days ago with my gopro 3 black edition.
I tryed format it on the camera, on the laptop with adapter, i tryed almost everything... I still see the files and i can access them and copy to my pc as well, but i can't delete them or format the card, windows not allow.
I've tryed some recovery programs, i recover lot of old files that i had deleted already from the card and the last ones before it stops working...
So it means that can have a chance to fix this i think, because aparently it's working..
I contact sandisk and i'm waiting for the answeri have a 64gb micro sd card class 10 sdxc. im using it on my note 2. ill give you a summary of what happens. when i take pictures and store it on my memory card its ok, but when i restart my phone all the files i have it dissapears. i tried using numerous types of file explorers but it just dissapears. now im formatting the card in my note 2, but after it formats the card, after i restart my phone, all the files that was formatted comes back as if it wasnt formatted at all. i tried doing this more than 5 times still same result. i connected my note 2 on my laptop and tried formatting it there, after it formats and shows that it is succesful and formatted my card, after i rstart my computer or phone, or simply close the dialog box, it reverts back to the original state as if it wasnt formatted at all. i tried connecting my micro sd to its sd adapter, inserted the card directly to my laptop, buy it keeps saying that it is write protected. i know how to unlock the adapter (the switch on the left side), i even tried putting the switch both in opposite sides (up and down), but it still says that it is write protected. i tried using different adapters yet it says that it is still write protected and cannot format the card. i tried putting scotch tape on the side of the adapter, still it says it is write protected and cannot format the card. i tried go into the administrative tools>disk management>micro sd and formatted thru there, yet it says cannot format disk drive. ive tried formatting thru run>cmd>diskpart>list disk>select my card>format fs etc, it says cannot format card due to an error. i would lkike tothink that the card is broken and corrupted, but the thing is, i can still access my pictures and videos inside and can copy files without a problem so i know the card still works and is not broken. the only thing is there is NO WAY in formatting the card, it either shows an error that it is write protected, even in using different adapters and toggling the lock switch, or it formats but after restart of phone/computer or reinserting to other device, it reverts back to the state where it wasnt formatted at all. please, with all the things ive done, i need your help.

i tried scanning using different antiviruses (kaspersky, avg, avast, malware removals etc) and it shows no viruses or malwares or spywares. please do help -

How are the photos getting onto the card ? If you are copying them onto it from your computer then you need to create a DCIM directory off the root of the card, with the photos underneath it, and the photo filenames need to be exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension i.e. in a similar format as if a camera had created/written them.
If the camera has written them to the card then is the reader fully inserted in the dock ? -

There is a bug with the sdcard : we cannot write into it (read access only).
This bug is from Android (we cannot write into the "sd card2" and the internal storage is the "sdcard").
For example, download an application like "Astro" and try to add a folder into your SD card: you can't.
But with the file manager of Toshiba, you can do it !
How ? Any special autorisation ?
In my application, I'm using :

Did you try to format the SD card using the exFAT format?
Do that and use exFAT.
The Toshiba file manager handles any SD card format therefore youve got no problems using the Toshiba file manager -
How do i format a memory card on my mac?
I don't get a choice to format the sd card (actually via an adapter I plug into the USB port that holds various memory cards) - not sure if formating the sd card would actually eliminate the virus, but thought I'd try... The card is infected with a "conficker" virus, which Sophos can't remove. I have eliminated all the files, and there still is like 55 unviewable files.
Disk Utility. The same way you format any type drive on a Mac.

hit enter
You should get a message that the winsock reset successful and you will need to reboot your computer.
Reboot and when I reloaded itunes the store loaded fine.

Cannot format my iMac. Problem with partition's file
I cannot format my iMac because Disk Utility sends an error: The partition map needs to be repaired because there's a problem with the EFI system partition's file system. Any suggestions?
The problem began when the Time machine excluded my home folder of the backup. I could not include it again in the process (not in system preferences, nor anything else), so I decided to format the HD and make a fresh install of OSX Mavericks. I could not do this because Disk Utility cannot unmount the partition when formatting the HD, and the error arose. I simply cannot fix this, and before giving up and take it to a Mac repair shop, I would like to try by myself.

N81: "Memory full" even formatted the memory card
Hi.
Using N81, I get the "Memory full. Delete some data" message every time (when turning on the mobile, when trying to install any app, when trying to uninstall any app, ...).
I've formatted the memory card, and I've got:
- Capacity: 1947 MB
- Used: 1 MB
- Free: 1946 MB
but continue getting the same error.
Any similar experience? I reset the mobile (*#7370# and *#7780#) but I don't experience any change (I've deleted the time and settings, but not the memory issues).

What I recommend you try is to re-installing your firmware and see if this make a difference. You can do this via Nokia suite through tools and update.
If after this is still isn't working when you did a hard reset (*#7370#) did you back and restore? If you did do the hard reset but don't restore, do still experience the same issue?

You're probably looking at the wrong place-at the Motion for PowerPC pages.There used to be a trial for Motion version 1 and/or 2 but both will not work in an Intel processor Mac. The Universal binary version ( 2.1 and later ) has been integrated into Final Cut Studio and there's no trial or checker for Motion since then.

Bootcamp problem cannot format windows partition
I have tried numerous times to run bootcamp to install Windows on new Macbook 13" Retina. It always hangs at the stage where windows tries to format the BOOTCAMP partition. It says it cannot format it
I contacted Apple support who said that I could use disk Utilities to format the Bootcamp partition - no I can't! I have the partition shown in Disk Utility but there is no option to format it. There is an option to erase it with NTFS greyed out and it says in the info that it is in Windows NT file system
