Cannot format HD 3000 drive

I own an older removable portable drive, HD 3000, 300 Gb. I installed a Linux OS on it... I have tried to format the drive, but the Linux cannot be erased!!! I have tried several times with same result. Linux cannot be "eliminated". Help ! I need the drive cleaned.

Or cables. Or you need to reset nvram.
Maxtor has been playing around with their firmware.
Always helps to -
look at the drive in System Profiler.
Copy down model, revision, firmware etc.
Post that, or at worst, look on the label of the drive.
Then post what you have (capacity etc) and you might want to Google to see if that model comes up with any hits.
Also, check out

They have quite a bit of good info on general drive info too.

  • Please help....  Cannot format my hard drive, new mac user!

    Hello!
Whenever I try to recover my Mac it gets to the Apple logo then freezes, is there a way I can wipe the hard drive then do a hard install from my CD set? This is driving me crazy so please help me!!

First, make sure you've backed up everything you need from your hard drive, as you'll be erasing absolutely everthing when you reformat.
Then, you'll have to boot from the CD - I would assume it's version 10.3.5. Insert install disc #1 and choose restart from the apple menu at the top left of your display. At the sound of the start-up chord hold down the "c" key until you have a white screen with an apple and a whirling sundial or something, at which point you can release the key because start-up is under way. You should also be able to hear the optical drive speed up as the disc takes control of operating your iMac.
Once you see a splash screen, either at the top of that or on the second screen you will find some pull-downs that will include "Disk Utility" in one of them. Open the Disk Utility, select (highlight) the entire hard drive, then select the "Erase" panel. Provide a name for your hard drive, or leave it "untitled" and select the format you want, although the default selection should be set to what you want - extended with journaling. Click on the "Erase" button and the reformat will quickly be completed in a matter of seconds.
Select the "First Aid" panel when you're finished with the "Erase" panel. There find the "S.M.A.R.T. status" and check to see that it shows as "verified." While you're there, you might as well click the "Repair Disc" button, and note that it should show that no repairs were necessary.
Then you can close Disk Utility and be returned to a welcome screen where you'll begin installing the Panther OS from the disc. I believe it takes about a half hour or so.

  • Cannot format hard drive and do a clean install

I'm in a pretty big mess right now.  I was using boot camp with lion and Windows 7 no problem and I wanted to edit the sizes of the partions.  It didnt go so well and I ended up losing both operating systems.  Now the big problem is when I boot up from the recovery partion I cannot do any sort of formating from the disk utility, it always give me some sort of error.  When I try to install lion via web there is no partion that I can Install it to.  I can install Windows no problem from a USB drive whcih I have done already.  When managing the disk in windows I see 2 of the windows partions, the mac recovery partion, and an 80 GB partition that I can format but I cannot do anything else with.  I dont have any images or recovery devices other than the recovery partition.  I need some advice on how to get the drive back to mac format so I can re install lion.

From the disk utility every time I would try to format the partitions or resize anything it would say cannot unmount disk and there was another error I cant remember.  I think I'm on the right track though.  What I've managed to do so far is with the disk utility on the recovery partition, I formated a usb drive and then installed Lion on that drive.  The drive is painfully slow but it seems to be working.  Where I am at now is I have booted from the the flash drive and managed to Format the Hard drive back to mac format and I am now creating an image of the USB stick that I can hopfully copy to the hard drive.  Creating the image is taking a while due to the crappy transfer rate of the USB stick.
If you have any suggestions of where to go next or what to do I would appreciate it.

  • Cannot format a USB 2 gb Flash Drive

I received a 2 gb FLASH Drive from a supplier. It has their presentation and media information on it, but also has about 1.6 gb of free space. I want to now use this "Thumb Drive" to store other information; and I tried to reformat it for Mac (or Windows). BUT when I go to Disk Utility, I see 3 things:
    1. First after my main HD, I see this: "1.9 GB Flash Disk Media" with the orange and white USB symbol (icon).
    2. Indented below #1 is a white ard Drive symbol (icon) and I can reformat this for DOS or MAC to about 1.6 gb of space. I've done this and call it SCSWal2.
    3. BUT there is a second orange and white USB icon at the same left-side position as the first, and this is labeled "30.9 mb Flash Disk Media". In DISK UTILITY, if I right-click and ask for Information, it says this is a Media Type "CDROM" and LOCKED.
When I click on this "30.9 mb Flash Disk Media" in Disk Utility, everything is "grayed-out", i.e. I cannot erase this, cannot do anything to it.
If I eject the 1.9 GB Flash Disk Media (basically if I eject the SCSWal2), then the 1.9 GB Flash Disk Media disappears in Disk Utility. BUT THE #3 "30.9 mb Flash Disk Media" remains in Disk Utility (it does NOT appear on the Desktop). BUT if I just pull-out the stick drive, then this disappears.
HOW TO FULLY FORMAT THIS STICK DRIVE so that the "30.9 mb Flash Disk Media" disappears?
    Regards,
    Steve 18 Sept 2008

Yes, it indeed seems to be some type of "U3" (that's new to me) or other separate hard drive. In fact, when I insert the new stick drive into my MAC, it shows the disk image (about 1.6 gb) but does NOT show the 30.5 mb (like a Windows computer does) - it says that this drive is not in a format that is recognize by macintosh OSX and either for me to click IGNORE or EJECT. No matter which I check, I cannot "see" this second 'drive' - only if I click IGNORE then I can see it in DISK UTILITY, but can't do anything about it.
As to the web reference you gave, it seems that will only work if I am on a WINDOWS PC - the UNINSTALL software (about 3.3 mb download) is an 'exe' file, i.e. not a Mac program-- is there any Mac software to eliminate the U3?
Just about the time I thought things were getting compatible, this comes out and now all the MacUsers who want to view the pps presentations on this partition cannot!
    Thanks for any additional assistance,
    Steve

  • Cannot format "WD My Book" external drive

I cannot format my Western Digital My Book 750GB external drive with Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I have booted the computer with the Leopard DVD and used Disk Utility. I cannot repair the drive because I get an error. I cannot delete the partition because I get an error. I cannot format the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) because I get an error.
I can only format the drive as FAT. It's like the drive will not accept anything being done to it except formatting in FAT.
Anyone know what's going on? Thanks!

Yes same issue here I had to format in dosFAT (not happy about it but only choice it would allow). Then when I went to turn on Timemachine it said I had to reformat the disk in order to use it - I told it to go ahead and it did it (not using the disk utility though) so I checked the format with Disk Utility to see what it formatted it as and it says 'Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)'. That's good enough for me.
It may just be a case of the Disk utility having an issue with it from it's original format. I should have tried to reformat again from there to see if there was a difference but I'm happy enough it's working.

  • MacBook Pro crashed while deleting old backups off partitioned external hard drive. Now only recognizes windows formatted half of drive. Can the Apple side be saved?

    MacBook Pro 15-inch, Mid 2010
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)
I have an external hard drive:
    2 TB Seagate Backup+Desk Media
    Partitioned:
    1TB - Windows NTFS
1TB - Mac (sorry I can't remember the formatting, whatever Mavricks asked me to use...)
    What happened:
I was erasing 3 old backups from the Apple partition and my laptop crashed part way through emptying the trash. (it has done this many times before, where parts of the screen are frozen in square blocks displaced all over the screen. Screenshot not possible unless I use a separate camera).
When I force restarted my computer (holding down the power button) neither side of the drive was accessible. After running the Disk Utility and Verifying and Repairing the Disk Permissions and the Disk Itself (for the Windows side) I was able to access the Windows partition. However, upon attempting to do so with the Mac partition it tells me that it cannot be repaired. I have found many forums discussing SIMILAR situations but none with the same and here is why:
Up until this happening I could access ONLY the Windows partition when the drive was connected to either my Apple laptop in Bootcamp Windows 7 or my HP laptop in Vista, while my MacBook could access both sides of the drive. HOWEVER, after this crash, BOTH my Windows 7 and Vista can access both sides of the drive (so My files are still all there and accessible) but my MacBook Pro swears that the Apple partition is doomed.
Since the Apple side of my laptop is my primary workhorse I really want to figure out how to fix my drive.
    So Questions:
    1. Anything else I can provide to the experts out there to help me get this fixed?
    2. Can I custom fix this via accessing the drive on either of the Windows systems?
    3. Why would it suddenly show up in Windows when it became unaccessible to Mac?
    Thanks All!

    UPDATE:
It has been maybe a month since this happened.
After I made this post and was checking emails, walking away from computer, and then came back my Mac partition of the External Drive has shown up on the Desktop...
So, in the ever immortal way of asking the tech to come check the issue and the issue resolving itself, perhaps I should posted on the forum sooner...
NOTE: The disk still shows up as unusable in the Disk Utility and it appears that the files are read only (cannot make a new folder on this side of the external drive)
I still consider this a volatile issue because I do not want to lose the files on this half of the partition and I have not gotten a replacement drive yet (too much data to move to my computer and then format the current drive)

  • I have a big problem with Lion and PGP. After upgrading from snow leopard to lion I cannot access my PGP drive which was generated under snow leopard. PGP does not start but gives a notion that lion cannot work with my PGP version. Solution?

After upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion I cannot access a PGP drive which was generated under snow leopard. PGP does not start. When I try to start I just receive a message that Lion cannot work with PGP. How can I now access important and confifential informatio which I have stored in PGP (snow leopard). Do I have to move back to snow leopard. If so, how can I do this?

    If you have this product,

you have to go back to Snow Leopard.
To re-install SL, back up your home directory, format and re-install.

  • Can i use windows migration assistant to transfer files from my windows formatted external hard drive to my mac?

I have a windows formatted external hard drive and a macbook pro. I was wondering if i could use the windows migration assistant to transfer files from my external hard drive to the mac

    No.
Just connect the drive to your Mac. The Mac can read most Windows formats (it cannot WRITE Windows New Technology File System (NTFS) formatted drives.

  • How to format a hard drive for Linux?

I have a hdd (500gb) that used to be my internal drive for my MBP 2012. It currently has Mac OS 10.10 and Ubuntu 14.04. I want to erase the drive though so I can make it strictly for Linux. The question is which format do I choose in disk utility. These are my options:
    Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted)
    Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)
Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled, Encrypted)
    MS-DOS (FAT)
    ExFAT
    Thanks in advance

Format it from the Linux installer. You cannot format it using Disk Utility because you cannot format a startup volume.

  • FAT formatted external hard drive is not 'readable by this computer'

    Hello support community
The problem: when I insert my 'FAT' formatted external hard drive (Samsung M3) into my mac book pro it comes up with the error message that says "the inserted disk is not readable by this computer" and I therefore cannot access the files.
    The story (potential further details):
    1. I had a problem with my mac where it took hours to load each time I turned it on, would only work when power was plugged in etc. so I had to reformat my mac hard drive (when I tried to veriify it said repair, that wouldn't work). So i'm starting with a recently reformatted, clean mac.
    2. Before doing this I reformatted my external hard drive (whilst on windows machine) to FAT32 (so I can use on both windows and mac) so that I could back up my files.
    3. I then transferred files from mac onto external hard drive and then also put them on a windows machine.
    4. After reformatting mac hard drive when I then tried to transfer files back onto the mac I get the 'not readable' error.
    The technical details:
Thank you very much indeed anyone who can help or can try and help
    Cheers
    Andy

Erase the drive and reformat using your Mac (Disk Utility)

  • Format A31 "C" Drive

I just got an A31 (2652 J3U) from an IT guy who thought he was helping me by installing Tiny XP, a smaller, quicker version of XP, this OS is useless, so I want to install my legal XP Pro Corporate SP1, but I get a mesage that I cannot install it because my version is older than the Tiny XP currently on my A31. I assume that I will have to format my "C" drive then begin from scratch. I am not much of a techie, a newbie on the A31, so can you explain to me in simple point form how to format the "C" drive on my A31? I assume after the formatting that I will start my machine using F12, then select the CD as the first boot hardware, then the XP Pro install window ought to open up automatically from which I can begin the install process. I also got all the drivers  for this A31 model from the Lenovo site, assume that I will install those after installing XP Pro, then install all my security software, then install all the updates from Microsoft. Am I on the right track? Will this work? Thanks, Ken.

Any XP installation disk should have the ability to format the drive as a part of the installation process.
    Cheers,
    George

  • Bootcamp problem cannot format windows partition

I have tried numerous times to run bootcamp to install Windows on new Macbook 13" Retina.  It always hangs at the stage where windows tries to format the BOOTCAMP partition.  It says it cannot format it
I contacted Apple support who said that I could use disk Utilities to format the Bootcamp partition - no I can't!  I have the partition shown in Disk Utility but there is no option to format it.  There is an option to erase it with NTFS greyed out and it says in the info that it is in Windows NT file system
Any ideas - I have been trying this for weeks now
I bought Parallels but that was useless - even after giving over most of the 8GB memory to Windows it kep freezing / going slow?
How do I persuade my Windows install disk that the drive - called Untitled - is NTFS and that it can install (Windows 7) on it
Very frustrated as all this worked first time on both my iMacs
    Help please

Personally I have had no experience with this problem but maybe these urls will have some useful info.

  • Cannot format micro sd, believe me, i tried everything

the same happened to me 4 days ago with my gopro 3 black edition.
I tryed format it on the camera, on the laptop with adapter, i tryed almost everything... I still see the files and i can access them and copy to my pc as well, but i can't delete them or format the card, windows not allow.
I've tryed some recovery programs, i recover lot of old files that i had deleted already from the card and the last ones before it stops working...
So it means that can have a chance to fix this i think, because aparently it's working..
I contact sandisk and i'm waiting for the answer

i have a 64gb micro sd card class 10 sdxc. im using it on my note 2. ill give you a summary of what happens. when i take pictures and store it on my memory card its ok, but when i restart my phone all the files i have it dissapears. i tried using numerous types of file explorers but it just dissapears. now im formatting the card in my note 2, but after it formats the card, after i restart my phone, all the files that was formatted comes back as if it wasnt formatted at all. i tried doing this more than 5 times still same result. i connected my note 2 on my laptop and tried formatting it there, after it formats and shows that it is succesful and formatted my card, after i rstart my computer or phone, or simply close the dialog box, it reverts back to the original state as if it wasnt formatted at all. i tried connecting my micro sd to its sd adapter, inserted the card directly to my laptop, buy it keeps saying that it is write protected. i know how to unlock the adapter (the switch on the left side), i even tried putting the switch both in opposite sides (up and down), but it still says that it is write protected. i tried using different adapters yet it says that it is still write protected and cannot format the card. i tried putting scotch tape on the side of the adapter, still it says it is write protected and cannot format the card. i tried go into the administrative tools>disk management>micro sd and formatted thru there, yet it says cannot format disk drive. ive tried formatting thru run>cmd>diskpart>list disk>select my card>format fs etc, it says cannot format card due to an error. i would lkike tothink that the card is broken and corrupted, but the thing is, i can still access my pictures and videos inside and can copy files without a problem so i know the card still works and is not broken. the only thing is there is NO WAY in formatting the card, it either shows an error that it is write protected, even in using different adapters and toggling the lock switch, or it formats but after restart of phone/computer or reinserting to other device, it reverts back to the state where it wasnt formatted at all. please, with all the things ive done, i need your help.
    PS
i tried scanning using different antiviruses (kaspersky, avg, avast, malware removals etc) and it shows no viruses or malwares or spywares. please do help
