Cannot get 16 X 9 aspect ratio on NTSC monitor

Just installed a Radeon 9800 pro Mac edition to replace the original GeForce 5200 that came with the computer. The new card is great and gives 30 fps on the main LaCie electron blue 19" monitor when "Full screen" mode is selected. Problem is ... when I select "External video" regardless of the option selected under "Preferences" in "Output" the framerate drops to 6 or 7 fps. The image on the Sony PVM monitor always shows in a stretched 4 X 3 aspect ratio with letterboxing all around it, top, bottom and sides regardless of what option I select in the ATI preferences on the Mac2TV panel. Now when I drag the viewing window from the main monitor to the External Sony PVM monitor and select "Full screen",(external video turned off) the aspect ratio remains in 16 X 9 with an acceptable frame rate.
Any suggestions out there? Thanks!

A solution for "Video output"
When sending an FCP 5.1.1 HDV sequence to "Motion project", it sends it at 1440 x 1080 and Motion 2.1.1 will open a new project to that size. Once that FCP HDV sequence is opened in Motion 2.1.1 and "Full screen mode" is selected it will play to a full screen in 16 x 9 at 30 fps on the "Main Computer Monitor". In this case the main monitor is a LaCie Electron blue 19". Now if "External video" is selected that being a Sony PVM 1351Q the image will show as a 1440 x 1080 and play at only 5 fps. Furthermore it will create a letterbox on all four sides. (looks like a stretched vertical 4 x 3). Now if a new project is opened in Motion 2.1.1 in HD (1920 x1080) and the same HDV QT file is imported in Motion ; the same procedure repeated, the image will play at a proper size and the 16 x 9 aspect ratio on the secondary NTSC Monitor will be respected, mind you it will still play at only 5 fps.
"SOLUTION"
By canceling the "Video output" on Motion, a full frame 16 x 9 image can be viewed on the "Main Monitor". By the way, that image is astonishing compared to what it was with the previous video card. Now by dragging the "Viewer image" above the timeline to the "Secondary Monitor (Sony)" and selecting the "Full Screen Mode" it will then give a proper full screen image with a 16 x 9 aspect ratio on the Sony PVM 1351Q at 30 fps. The image seen on the NTSC monitors when using FCP 5.1.1 in HDV has also improved to a great degree. It has improved to the point where the Radeon® 9800 Pro Mac® Edition 256MB AGP becomes an interesting solution for HDV editing in Final Cut Studio.
If somene has a better solution, I'm all ears! ... or all read!

Aspect ratio of NTSC monitor display

We're working on a FCP 4.5 project that's shot 16:9, and displays with the correct widescreen aspect in the canvas window (so long as pixels are displayed square). However, when I run mirrored video through a Sony DSR11 deck to an NTSC monitor, the picture appears stretched vertically (to fill the screen). How can I correct the aspect of the display in the monitor?

If I read right the poster is working anamorphic and wants to monitor it properly. Anything that creates a letterboxed display on 4:3 (including a deck conversion will not be monitoring the true signal. It will be a downrezzed and substantially mashed version.
If you need to truly monitor anamorphic output, just "anamorph" the monitor - see above.

Yeah, I'm having the same exact problem - It seems that the thunderbolt minidisplay port is only able to output the analog VGA signal, not the digital signal to support DVI and HDMI. This is a bug that came up after installing 10.7.1. I bought my macbook air with 10.7 on it, upgraded it to 10.7.1 as soon as I got it, so I have never been able to use hdmi or dvi with my macbook air. This is an extremely frustrating problem for me, I used HDMI on a daily basis with my PC. I have spent many hours at the genius bar running diagnostic tests so Apple can get as much information as possible to create a fix for this problem. I have been emailing tech support for 3 or so weeks now, they keep saying that they are working on a fix and it should be out soon, but 10.7.2 has come and gone and I still have no HDMI functionality with my MacBook Air!

IDVD gets 4:3 aspect ratio wrong

I am using iDVD 7.1.2 with 10.9.5 on a macbook pro.
I'm trying to make a 4:3 DVD (legacy material, it's 4:3 from old VHS tapes).
I output a .mov file from Final Cut Express. The file plays correctly in Quicktime. I.e. I get the right (4:3) aspect ratio. Quicktime inspector reports the movie format as DV/DVCPRO - NTSC 720x480 ( 853 x 480).
I create a new DVD project, select 4:3 aspect ratio.
I import the movie and it is squeezed horizontally. I.e. the aspect ratio is 3:3 (maybe not precisely, but darned close). Everything is tall and skinny.
I tried changing the project to 16:9, hoping that would stretch things out, but all it did was add dark space on the sides of the video.
I've tried various different output sizes (using quicktime conversion in FCE), to no avail. I always get a 3:3 aspect ratio in iDVD.
I also burned to a disk image and played it with DVDplayer just to make sure that the preview in iDVD wasn't fooling me. It's 3:3, also.
Any ideas on what to do??????? I have a lot of old VHS to convert and would like to get a flow down pretty quick.

OK, I played around with this long enough that I think I have it.
The problem is actually the way I set up the sequence defaults in Final Cut Express (probably would work the same in FCP). I didn't realize I had the sequence set to "DV-NTSC anamorphic". It should have been set to "DV-NTSC".
The result was that I imported a 4:3 .mov file into FCE, where it seemed OK, even in that sequence. However, FCE had inserted black space on the right and left of the 4:3 video, creating a 16:9 video with a 4:3 inside of it and the black bars surrounding the video. When that was imported into iDVD, iDVD forced the whole thing to 4:3, which of course, forced the actual 4:3 video to 3:3. Changing the sequence preset too NTSC solved that problem completely.
One of the things that confused me was that two other DVD authoring programs handled this without obvious problems. Torch and Wondershare DVD converter both displayed the video at 4:3. Also, quicktime displayed it correctly. There were the black bars on the side, but the aspect ratio of the actual picture was correct.
I'm putting this here because I can imagine that some other beginner will confront this someday, and at least here is a record of the problem and the solution.

Mirroring ipad on standard tv How to get 4:3 aspect ratio

I just purchased my APT and connected it via Mini HDMI to 3RCA Composite AV Converter.
Everything works fine except mirroring from ipad to TV screen. it's squished and stretched vertically.
I know APT if made for HDTV's but we just can't afford one right now and I was wondering if anyone has any possible ideas, or suggestions as to how to get it to display correctly on the screen?
My tv is a sony trinitron kv-27s66 which doesn't have a lot of video control.
Tried changing to to widescreen but it didn't help.
Any help would be most appreciated.

As you already know this is an unsupported setup, since it is designed for a widesreen HDTV you will have issues with aspect ratio/resolution on a standard TV. The only possibility would be to see if there is anything in your TV's manual, within the limited settings, that you can try. Note: you will be unable to view protected content and functionality could cease at any time.

Matching aspect ratio on external monitor

Hi - I am using illustrator cs4 on windows running on a macbook. when I use an external monitor, the aspect ratio is different and the printout is stretched. Is there a way I can take care of this problem?

Go to your System Preferences and check out the setting you have for your Monitor see if you have a stretched profile selected it will say stretched.
It might be trying to match your NoteBook profile. Chnage it to a normal setting if it has a stretched or wide screen profile.

Trying to get Anarmorphic footage in 16 X 9 Aspect ratio from PAL footage

Hi, I am currently doing some tests - having bought a new camera, the HVX-201 AE. I was trying to get a 16 X 9 Aspect Ratio on my finished test footage. I shot using DV Tape, using several options, the squeeze, letterbox and normal. I then captured using DV PAL Anamorphic..
On the timeline, it looks fine, with grey on top and below, with no black letterboxes, except for the section with letterbox format on. However, when I export to Quicktime, using the DV PAL 48hz Anamorphic codec, it keeps being saved as a quicktime file with 720 X 576 resolution. Is there any way for it to be 16 X 9? Do I have to use another codec or will it always be in a 5:4 aspect ratio no matter what I do?
Or is it that when a TV which can play in 16 X 9 detects it, then it shows up as a 16 X 9 picture?

That's what anamorphic means, it's a 16:9 image stored in a 4:3 frame. You maintain that throughout the post process and any dvd creation in order to utilise the maximum resolution available in sd. When you author the dvd it flags the footage as anamorphic, telling any dvd player you play it in to output it appropriately according to the way it's set up. If your dvd player is not set up properly for the monitor it's connected to it won't work correctly and you'll either see a vertically stretched image with no letterbox (4:3 monitor with dvd player set for a 16:9 monitor) or you'll see a vertically squashed image with narrow letterbox (16:9 monitor with dvd player set to 4:3. In this case you can get the correct aspect ratio if you set your tv to one of the 'zoom' settings; normally the next option after 4:3 as you cycle through the options, but you are then throwing away roughly 25% of the available resolution and the image will be a bit softer.)
In DVDSP you can set the simulator to mimic various set-ups in order to check how the disc will behave before you burn.
If you just want to create QTs then Nick Holmes advice is the way to go.

Changing seq. aspect ratio: crashes FCP

Despite my best intentions, my project contains sequences with different settings, which is causing problems on export. A quick overview of sequence contents and field dominance settings:
- SEQUENCE FIELD DOMINANCE: NONE
- PSD frame-graphic overlay (FD: None)
- QT titles from Keynote w/ transparency (FD: None)
- regular footage (FD: lower)
These field dom settings are the only ones that allow the titles to render crisply.
Rendering out using Compressor, DVD-90 settings. Some sequences render perfectly, but in others, the titles are jagged & blurry when rendered out. The only difference I can find, is in the sequence aspect ratios.
The sequences that render properly, are set at 720x480 NTSC DV (3:2).
The ones that render jagged/blurry titles, are 720x486 CCIR 601 NTSC (40:27). (These display crisply in FCP Canvas, but render improperly.)
When I change a sequence's aspect ratio to NTSC DV 3:2, I get "Operation Not Allowed," then "Out of memory," then the canvas turns red with the words "Display unavailable. Close and reopen window to restore." Sometimes, I get the beachball and then FCP crashes.
Closing and reopening doesn't help; I still have the red window. Only changing back to CCIR 601 brings the sequence back online.
I have tried creating a new sequence and copy/pasting, but I get "Out of memory" etc.
Can anyone advise??

By default Compressor assumes you're providing a 720x480 media file for compression to DVD. This is because DVD players can display only a 720x480 image.
If you send a 720x486 media file through the default Compressor settings, it will squeeze the image vertically to fit 720x480. It typically does not do this well.
If you suspect this is the problem, duplicate the DVD-90 setting, use the Inspector window and click on the Geometry button, select a Custom crop and crop 2 lines from the top and 4 lines from the bottom (always crop in even numbers for DVD playback). Rename and save the setting.

Changing aspect ratio of copy protected videos?

I am attempting to watch a widescreen TV show I purchased through the iTunes store on my LG plasma screen. My usual setup is a digital video out and into the plasma using VGA. The screen in this mode only gives me two aspect ratios to choose from: 16:9 or 4:3. In 16:9 mode the image appears streched and in 4:3 mode I have black margins an boths sides of the screen. When I watch a widescreen video in 16:9 it is streched with margins at the top and botton and in 4:3 mode I have now margins left and right and top and botton. I therefore usually change the aspect ratio in Quicktime so that it displays correctly in 16:9 format on the plasma. Unfortunately the new TV shows in the store are not just copy protected but I now cannot even change the aspect ratio of a video anymore under "movie properties". So the only option I have is to use the S-video output of my old Powerbook and connect to the composite input of the plasma. While this gives me many more aspect ratio options (intrinsic to the design of the plasma) the picture quality is poor. So how can I solve this? I do not want to purchase Apple TV. I have everything hardwired and do not want to change that. I understand that the files need to be copy protected. However, Apple should enable me to change the aspect ratio of a video to be able to view movies at high resolution and without a distorted picture. Any idea how to solve this?

Thanks for your note, but the issue a bit different. Clicking the "fit page" and "fit width" allows you to change the zoom on the document, but the viewing area within the pod remains at a fixed ratio. So the document (unless the pod size is set at the same ratio) never fills the entire pod. Is this clear? I've added some screen shots to show what I mean more clearly.
As you can see, no matter what the zoom level is on the PDF (or if it's to fit width as the above screen shot), it's constrained proportionally (as I mentioned, I think it's at 4:3). Ideally, I'd like to get the PDF so it can fill the entire pod and zoom in and out. Is this possible with Connect?

Aspect ratio in itunes

How can I make itunes play my 5:4 aspect video (720*576) in 16:9? Right now I convert them to 720*404 to get the correct aspect ratio but that seems like a bad idea.

You can't. iTunes itself only plays a movie at the aspect ratio that the movie is provided in and cannot override. If you want your movie to play at 16:9, you'll have to convert the movie to the correct resolution, cropping the frames if necessary. I'm not sure what the point would be, though; the movie content is only the aspect it is, and changing it isn't going to give you any more picture in the frame than it has now.

Exporting 1080i, Pixel Aspect Ratio Problems

Hello everyone,
I've been dealing with a lot of different format projects recently: SD, HDV 720-24P, and HDV 108050i.
For now, these projects are intended for internet delivery. I've not had too much problem exporting the SD and HDV 720-24P projects, but the HDV 108050i has been very frustrating.
When I export SD and HDV 720 in compressor, I set the pixel aspect ratios to NTSC and square, respectively. But when I try to set the pixel aspect ratio for the 1080i to "1080i 16:9" (which I believe is 1.333:1), it rejects my choice, choosing "default" instead. When compressor finishes exporting, my 1080i movie looks very squished horizontally.
The only success I have had is in exporting via Quicktime conversion, where I duplicate my compressor settings, but do nothing to the pixel aspect ratio (since there is no option to change it in quicktime, it seems). The movies I have exported with Quicktime have been fine. I don't know if it makes a difference, but when I try to export these 1080i clips, I am in the proper 1080i "easy setup."
I know almost nothing about this pixel aspect ratio business, but I believe it is the cause of my problems (since I am using the proper 16:9 aspect ratio for movie width x height).
My Questions:
1. If I am understanding the problem correctly, how do I get compressor to acknowledge the right pixel aspect ratio for my 1080i footage, rather than the incorrect "default"?
2. If am not understanding the problem correctly, what might be going on?
3. Can anyone point me to a useful resource about pixel aspect ratios? I've been searching the forums and online, and I thought I was getting a grip on things but it seems I am still way over my head. For example, what is the significance in Final Cut Pro of changing your viewer or canvas to not show square pixels? Do you need to format for square vs. non-square depending on the final delivery destination (not the source format)?

Aspect Ratio & dimentions

Hi there.
I mostly print on A5 paper size. In order to give the files correclty to the printers, I need to give it either as 20cm x 15cm or 8" x 6". I cannot get LR 4.1 to accept cm. Am I doing something wrong? secondly, does aspect ration influence dimentions in pixels? When printing, I always want the most pixels jammed in I can possibly get.

Are you refering to the Print module or Export?
In Print, try changing the Ruler Units here:

What aspect ratio are you refering to? In the print module, the PPI settings determine the resolution sent to the printer.

I was a bit dumfounded to see the default aspect ratio for NTSC is different in PS (3:2) and PR (4:3).

Yes I am accustom to square pixels. I understand that aspect ratio deals with stretching them.
So what you are saying is that the number of pixels can be stretched to fit any aspect ratio (format)?
So it is like resampling in PS to get elongated pixels?
Here is what I don't get. Why does PS resample at a different aspect ratio than PR? Or is there something I am not getting?
