Cannot get Adobe Reader to open anymore

I have an HP Pavillion 500 PC with Windows 8.
I installed Adobe Reader last summer and it has been working fine until last week.
It refuses to download any new files and will not open if I click the icon.
Please help :-)
Many thanks!

First thing I would try: repair Adobe Reader (from Control Panel | Programs & Features).
If that does not help, uninstall Reader using http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html
then download and install the latest version from http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/

I cannot get Adobe Reader 11 to work - what have I done wrong?

    Hi Pat,
I usually don’t have trouble explaining my problems, but this one is confusing the heck out of me.  I just downloaded Reader 11.  It is installed, I believe.  This is the first time Reader has not worked for me after upgrading to a newer version.  I’ve been reading PDF files forever, but tonight when I went to read a pdf file that I received today, I clicked on the file, expecting Reader to open up and it never did.  Then I tried to read some older pdf files and nothing happened when I tried to open the file.  I’ve been using Acrobat Reader for years so that’s why I’m so confused.
I downloaded the file from the adobe.com website. and everything seemed to be fine.  My question is indeed vague, but I don’t know any other way to explain what happened.  Should I uninstall and start over??
    Thanks, Elaine

  • Unable to get Adobe Reader to open.

I am unable to get Adobe Reader to open. I am on Windows XP, SP3 and I have tried with Adobe Reader 9, 10, and 11. When I try opening a PDF file, if I look in the Task Manager, the AcroRd32.exe process will appear, however nothing shows up under the Applications tab.

OK, I got my Adobe Reader working. The solution for me was found on the "Acrobat failed to load its Core DLL--can't open pdf files as a result<http://forums.adobe.com/thread/391917?tstart=0>" thread. It was post 51 on the thread by envsafety and it involved downloading and running

  • I cannot get adobe reader xi to work in google chrome running vista

I have tried everything to get Adobe reader to work in my google chrome and it wont work? I am using Chrome and Vista - I have allowed the plug in- uninstalled and reinstalled many times and when I open reader- it says Adobe reader has closed and it shuts down.

Try disabling Protected Mode in Adobe Reader [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].

  • Cannot get Adobe Reader to load a PDF on Firefox. Tried all the recommended solutions, none work

Every time I try to download a PDF file from a website, I get an error message that "Adobe Acrobat/Reader cannot be opened in a web browser, close it and try again". I have uninstalled and re-installed both firefox and adobe reader as well, and then followed the suggestions again. Still doesn't work. I am running Windows XP

Also, sorry -- one more thought:
When I run through the "Troubleshoot compatibility" it tells me that something is incompatible ("issues found: Incompatible Application").  when it asks me, "which version of Windows did this program work on before?" it doesn't give me windows 7 as an option.

  • How to get Adobe Reader to open IE 8 pdf(s) over Adobe Acrobat???

I have Adobe Acrobat Pro 8 installed on my Windows 7 32 computer.  I also have Adobe Reader 10 installed.  Everything was working fine until recently and after using the Acrobat 8 to edit some documents, I could no longer open a pdf. in Internet Explorer 8.   If I try to view a PDF in Internet Explorer 8, I get the message that Adobe that's open can't read the file.

So do I need to remove Acrobat 8?  That program was so expensive and has created one nightmare after another.  I can't afford to replace it butseems I can't afford to use it either (if I can't do my online research).  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks for responding!

  • How do I get to preview when I want to see a bank statement? I cannot get adobe reader to work. It just shows a black screen.

How does previews work when trying to see a bank statement?

Is your bank statement a PDF file? If so, simply double clicking it will open whatever is the default reader of PDF files. (A way to check is to select any PDF file in the Finder, go to File > Get Info, and look at the "Open With" drop down. By default, without Adobe Reader installed, it should show Preview. If Adobe Reader is installed correctly, it might say "Adobe Reader." BTW, you can change it back to Preview!)
It's also possible to control click or right click the file and choose the application to open the file using the Open With option. If Preview isn't an option, click "Other" and navigate to the Applications folder to select Preview.
    Hope this helps!

  • I recently upgraded to Mavericks, and now I cannot get Adobe Reader to install.

I have a MacBook Pro with 10.9.2. I was unable to open the version of Adobe Reader I had been using, so I used CleanMyMac to uninstall it. I then tried to install Adobe Reader multiple times to no avail. I am able to download and begin the installation process, but depending on where I download from, I get one of two messages. One reads, "Package name is Adobe Reader XI (11.0.06) installer: Installing at base path / installer: The install failed (The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.)"
The other error message, using the other AR download, says, "Found a higher version Adobe Reader in the installation location. Installation will terminate."
I have, as noted, uninstalled everything Adobe from the computer. I have turned the computer on and off. I have emptied the trash.
Any suggestions on something else to try?
    Thanks in advance,
    Elise

CleanMyMac is not really recommended software, you should take a look at the many threads on these forums that discuss whether it is needed & if it is safe to use.
Personally I don't think it is safe to use tools like CMM because they can encourage you to 'clean' essential system files that the OS needs. It also runs processes in the background that use up system resources for what purpose?
As for Adobe Reader. It's clear that CMM didn't remove all traces of Reader since Adobe's installer is still finding evidence of a 'newer' version installed (this seems like an error on the part of the installer).
You will need to follow Adobe's instructions for removing Reader correctly, instructions vary for each version of Reader, so you will need to try to figure out what was installed.

  • Getting Adobe Reader to open at a preset page?

I have a manual that is in three languages - German, English and Spanish.  The first 113 pages are taken up by the German part of the manual and the English part starts on page 114.  Is there any way that I can set Adobe Reader so that when it opens this document, it opens it at page 114?  Any insight that anyone would care to provide will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Search https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat.html for 'initial view' for what can be done.
However, these days people open PDF docs with all kinds of PDF viewers, and there is no guarantee that this will work with any of these 3rd-party viewers.  It may not even work with Adobe Reader on mobile platforms.

  • I cannot get adobe reader to download on an Acer Aspire 1 using Win 7 and Mcafee virus scan and firewall?

as sta.ted above i cannot download the Reader software from the Adobe website.there is nothing saved in nthe Windows downloads folder nor is there any sign of the Downloads box. We hnave W7 on the pc so know what to expect. Have even tried saving it in ano9ther location. Stil no good. Currently have the new Firefox and Windows and Mcaffe dowloads are happening automatically. Any ideas? Using an Acer Aspire one netbook

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps to download the Adobe Reader file.

If that still fails then you will have to use another computer to download the file and use an USB stick too transfer the file.

  • Cannot get adobe reader to work to print off bank statements

Can anyone help me with this one: The patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exits and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer patch package.

Assuming that you are on Windows, I suggest that you uninstall / reinstall Adobe Reader.
If you also have difficulties doing that, try http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall

  • I cannot use Adobe Reader to open PDFs in protected webpages

    Hello,
I just downloaded the application Adobe Reader in my iPhone 5 (iOS 6.0.2). My problem started when I tried to open my school BlackBoard Learning system (Safari showes a thumbnail of a lock in the top bar meaning page has some security constrains) and then I wanted to access some PDF material. Unfortunately, I couldn't open it through the application. The bar that should appear once a page with PDF is opened did not appear!(The one that says 'Open in ') I really need a solution for this since most of the content there is in the form of PDF file.
    Thank you in advance.

You could try going to an Apple store to ask them about this.
It's important to note that there are no browser plugins in Safari, so until the "open in" button is touched, only Safari is involved and the opening App does not have a chance to see the file until after the file is downloaded and handed off. If the bar isn't showing up in Safari, it could be one of two things:
    1) A bug in Safari
    2) The website may not be returning pdf content correctly (or at all). Some websites try to detect the presence of a browser plugin before sending a PDF. Since there are no plugins to Safari, this detection would fail on mobile browsers. In this case, the website owner should update the service to serve PDF's to mobile browsers.
