Cannot get certain apps on my iPad...

I just got my first iPad but I cannot find certain apps such as Nationwide or Wowcher. I've got them on my iPhone & my other tablet but cannot find them on my iPad apps. Any ideas please.....?

If you have them on your iPhone, enter the names in the App Store search field, when they don't appear tap iPad only at the top of the screen then tap iPhone only and see if you can install them. Not all apps work on both devices.

Ok...... Do you have a question for us? Perhaps you could start by explaining what's happening when you try to download apps. What error messages are you getting? What troubleshooting steps have you already tried?
Please note that the original iPad can't be updated beyond iOS 5.1.1. Apps that require a later version of iOS won't work on your device.

You can create an iTune and App Store account without credit card
1. Sign out of current Apple ID if you are sign-in to one (important)
2. Go to App Store and select a free app
3. Tap INSTALL APP
4. Create New Apple ID
5. Confirm Your Country
6. Agree with Terms and Conditions
7. Fill in your Apple ID and Password (you must create a new Apple ID; don't use your old Apple ID)
8. Create and answer your secret question
9. Select NONE for Payment Method
10. Fill in Billing Address
11. Submit application for new Apple ID
12. Wait for verification email
13. When email arrive, verify your account
14. Start downloading your free apps

My kids have given me a second hand ipad 1st gen MC497B/A ipad 3G 64GB- GBR and I cannot get ANY apps even free ones as says I must have V6 Surely this device is not so old I can't get any apps Plea tell a novice what to do as no free Apple support!

The iPad 1 can be updated to iOS 5.1.1. You can see what level you are running in Settings > General > About > Version.
If you are not at iOS 5.1.1 and if you are have iOS 4 (or earlier) there is no Software Update in Settings. That feature was first added in iOS 5.
To update you will have to connect your iPad to iTunes on a computer (preferably the one you sync with and backup to).

If you are on level 5 but not at 5.1.1 you can update to 5.1.1 using Settings > General > Software Update.
There are still many Apps which will run on iOS 5. Also, some developers have older levels still available for the iPad 1.

The preinstalled apps, those that came as part of the iOS, cannot be deleted and will not shake or provide the black circle-X for deletion.
Others should do that if you touch and hold for a few seconds.
If they are not, do a reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears and it restarts, ignoring the red slider if that appears.

Look and see if you have a stalled download in iTunes - it could be a song or a podcast - if there is something that has not completed in there, your app updates will not download. Finish those downloads first, if you have any.
Check to make sure.

Cannot update certain apps

I'm having trouble in Maverick getting certain apps.
This consists of:
IBooks 1.0.1
ITunes 11.1.3
Compatibility thing for Raw cameras 5.02
OSX 10.9.1
Remote desktop 3.7.1
When I press "update" or "update all" it tells me that some updates have to be completely downloaded before they are installed.
If i press "Download and start again", it restarts and we're back to the same problem.
If i press "Not now", it looks like its downloading for like half a second and just stops
What to do ?

Install OS X 10.9.1 only, and then, if OS X 10.9.1 was installed properly, install all other updates.
If you cannot install OS X 10.9.1, download and install it from the Apple website > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1715

You were on the right track. You got the connect to iTunes screen and you ended to use iTujes to restore your iPad. Try recovery mode again.
Recovery Mode Instructions
Disconnect the USB cable from the iPad, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off iPad: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for iPad to turn off.
If you cannot turn off iPad using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the iPad turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to iPad. When you reconnect the USB cable, iPad should power on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears you can release the Home button.
If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the recovery mode alert that iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode.
Use iTunes to restore iPad.

I just went through this same process.... I changed my credit card, double checked billing info, changed my password, I restored my phone, but the misake I made was I kept restoring it from my back up.... Finally I went to Apple Store.. and sad to say that you have to do a restore, and DO NOT restore from back up.
I used Gmail so I didnt loose contacts or email.. but I did loose all my text messages and history of that.
So, I had the EXACT same problem and it was a software issue.. you have to restore your phone to factory settings and start all over.. BLOWS I know!

If you downloaded the correct version for your iPad model (and the different models have different ipsw files), then you should be able to navigate to it in iTunes by pressing and holding the shift key on Windows (command key on Mac) when clicking the Check For Updates button.

Oaky, at least we got that far. Next step is to determine if all those "numbers" are really numbers. Changing the format to "number" doesn't necessarily change the string to a number. The string has to be in the form of a number. Some may appear to you and me as numbers but will not turn into "numbers" when you change the formatting from Text to Number. Unless you've manually formatted the cells to be right justified, one way to tell if it is text or a number is the justification. Text will be justified to the left, numbers will be justified to the right.
Here are some that will remain as strings:

Disable Automatic Downloads for apps. To do it, on the phone, open Settings > iTunes & App Stores, and disable "Apps" under "Automatic Downloads"
