Cannot get full widescreen picture (16:9) via VGA

I'm trying to setup my LCD HDTV as an external monitor for my MacBook. The issue is that the TV is not displaying a full 16:9 image from the MacBook; it's only showing a 4:3 image, so there are large black bars on the side of the picture.
Setup
- TV: Samsung 40" LN-T4061F HDTV (full 1080p resolution)
- Connection: mini-DVI to VGA, VGA to TV
When I go to System Preferences > Displays, it finds the Samsung without an issue. It even defaults the resolution to 1920x1080, 60Hz. But for some reason (in both mirror and non-mirror mode) the display on the Samsung is 4:3 so I don't get the full widescreen capability.
I can certainly try something like SwitchRes X but I thought I'd check the forums first to see if anyone could provide some help. Thanks in advance.

does your TV have over/under scan? you might be able to get "fullscreen" w/ a miniDVI to DVI +DVI or HDMI cable. the MacBook "officially" only supports up to a 23" display, but i've successfully connected to my 42" Sony LCD Projector HDTV & gotten fullscreen using a miniDVI + DVI>HDMI cable, which has over/under scan control.

When you select Edit in iPhoto by Control (right) - clicking on the thumbnail or using the Command(⌘)+E key combination:

Cannot get my iphone 4 to connect via bluetooth to another phone or my pc

I cannot get my iphone 4 to connect via bluetooth to another phone or my PC, despite activating bluetooth on the iphone it just says 'devices' 'searching' 'now discoverable'. I have put the 2 devices very close to each other as well.
Anybody have any ideas?

That's because it's not supported. The iPhone supports hands free devices, keyboards and A2DP audio streaming. Bluetooth can only be used to a computer for tethering. Some apps can establish peer to peer connections for gaming and data sharing, but that's it.
What you're trying to do will NOT work.

I cannot get full 4k2k resolution while bootcamp windows 8.1 on new mac pro

When using OS X Yosemite, I get full 4k resolution on my mac pro 2013 using a seiki 39" TV/monitor. However, when I'm using widows 8.1 on the bootcamp partition I can only get 1080P. Has anyone seen this problem? Is it the mini display to HDMI cord that I'm using? Would this still be the case if I went straight HDMI to HDMI? On OS X side its full 4k at 30Hz default, but in bootcamp its 1080P at 60Hz default. Thanks, footdocy.

4K displays and Ultra HD TVs using Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 with Boot Camp use the same rules as OS X. If you upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1, you should repair Boot Camp drivers.

IPhoto can see thumbnails but cannot get full pictures

My iPhoto library seems to be corrupted.
I can see all the thumbnails but when I click on some I get a triangular sign with an exclamation point.
Others work.
Thinking that perhaps the iPhoto database was corrupted, I attempted to load an older time machine backup (mid July 2014), but Time Machine would not let me select the iPhoto directory. I can select my desktop ( as a test) but not my documents (very upsetting).
I did successfully restore the iPhoto App.
I have successfully restored my complete system twice with only minor problems. One was a permissions issue when I restored to a new MBP.
Anyway in both cases the iPhoto library stayed intact.
I would deal love to hear any suggestions that anyone might have to offer.

From BB, cannot get into Router to reconfigure it via browser interface (e.g. 192.168.1.1)

Hi guys.
INet browsing via WiFi works (BB 9105), but I would like to get into my Router too, to reconfigure it. When I try to access my router, 192.168.1.1, or my ADSL modem (192.168.0.1) I always get the 504 error (Gateway Timeout), which is the same error I get when browsing through BIS.
Of course, through BIS I cannot access my router or modem, but with WiFi it should be possible to access it.
To make sure, I turned off BIS on my 9105.
I also, via a PC, configured the router to allow my BB MAC address to access the router.
Are they not compatible at all?
Or do I have to use a different browser on my BB?

I hesitated posting here because I cannot give you a definitive answer, I've looked around and havn't seen any answers to this question specifically either.
What I can tell you however is using my mobile phone browser I have had no problems accessing my router while I am connected through WiFi, saying this I will also mention I use a DLink and am connecting with the same process in my case 192.168.0.1
Sorry, I can't tell you how to get it working, but hopefully this will keep you interested enough in the problem to get it sorted out.

Cannot get iTunes to recognize remote speakers via Airtunes

I have the option checked under iTunes preferences to look for remote speakers. The Airport Express device is "up and running" and glowing a continuous green which tells me it recognizes the wireless Belkin Pre-N router which is the central router for 2 windows laptops, a mac mini and this iBook. The mac mini is hard wired to the router; all others are wireless. A couple of items worth noting: Airport Express has worked previously on the iBook. Prior to running the Belkin Pre-N...I was running a Linksys 802.11b router. In addition, the motherboard on this iBook was replaced by Apple earlier in the summer. The iBook was returned with no problem and the hard drive remained intact. I tried to follow D.Lovell's link (hats off...by the way, nice job) but did not get very far.I hardwired the iBook to the Belkin Pre-N router and established an internet connection. I then tethered the Airport express to the router via ethernet cable and powered up Airport Express. Flashing yellow ensued....no green. Per Lovell's instructions, I opened Airport Admin Utility and nothing is recognized here. If I hit rescan or find other, another window pops up asking for IP address and password. Perhaps I am wrong here but I enter the IP address the router assigns to the IBook but I have no password to enter as Ive never associated a password with this router. This is as far as I can go in the process. Do I have an Apple issue? A Belkin issue? I feel as though I am close to solving this ....and its all the more frustrating that it worked previously...No firewall software runs in the background. Help????????

If when the Airport Express is cabled to one of the ethernet LAN ports on your Belkin wireless router, and the Airport Express doesn't within a short period of time show a solid green status light, then the next thing I would do is a factory default reset of the Airport Express per:

- you have a defective Airport Express
- you have a defective ethernet cable connecting the Airport Express to the Belkin router
- the LAN port the Airport Express is cabled to on the Belkin router is defective

Cant get any widescreen resolutions using a MDP - VGA adpater

I recently purchased an Official Apple Mini-display port to VGA adpter for use with 2011 unibody MacBook Pro and Samsung Syncmaster 2232 BW external monitor. When plugging everything in and going into displays, I am presented with the attatched display,
with no option for any 16:10 resolutions, everything non widescreen down from 1600 x 1200. I've tried SwitchResX with no avail, and don't know what else to try? This is my monitor and its Native settings are 1680 x 1050
Any suggestions?

I have resolved this problem, and will explain how for the sake of anyone else who enctounters it.
Instal SwitchResX, create a Custom Resolution with the exact same settings as the MacBook's 1680 x 1050 display mode, save and apply it (will need restart) . You can then Uninstall SwitchResX, and the custom resolution shall remain stored in the System Preferences > Display. This is good as you don't need to purchase SwitchResX, you can just use the 10 day trial, however if you need the other facilities of the program I would recommend you support the developers.
Hope this helps others out who get stuck with the same annoying problem!

Cannot get screen to turn on during call after Jelly Bean

Got my Jelly Bean update the other day. Afterward I noticed the issue when trying to check my voicemail. Called *86, screen went black and I was unable to get it back on using the power button (like I usually do) so I could not enter my voicemail pin. Verified the phone was still on the call since it would tell me to enter my pin and then finally hang up. I cannot get the screen to come on via other calls either incoming or outgoing. This makes the phone virtually useless as a phone since the update. I have done a full factory reset following the instructions on Verizon's site and prevented the phone from doing a full restore, so it did not pull down all of my apps again in case that was somehow a problem. Still no joy. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I have a screen protector on the phone, but not a case. I have had my device for about two years now. There is no damage to the phone at all. The device was working perfectly fine until the Jelly Bean update. Ever since then I have had this problem.
After reading MitchF's response I removed the screen protector that I had on the device and it appears that it may be working at this time.
What does not make sense to me is that why, as soon as I got the JB update, my screen protector became a problem when it had been working just fine through past updates to 4.0+ for almost two years (minus the last few weeks).

Cant get full volume

After putting my phone back to restore settings ( only way i could get it off headphone setting) I cannot get full sound out of it it is showing it is on full volume but you can hardly hear it ring. It's a 3gs

This is an interesting subject .... I recently got a Sansa Clip (great MP3 player for the price) but the volume at max was pitiful. A search on the internet showed that due to an EU directive (I think) the volume was capped. I found instructions to reset the device and instead of Europe enter USA during the setup process. I did just that and now the volume is fine - much louder. So ... this may be a legal requirement imposed on us (and Nokia) by our elders and betters (HAH).

Given the fact that on public transport I can regularly here the music (from so-called personal devices) of half a dozen young people round me, I wouldn't be surprised if half the population currently at teenage is deaf by the time they are 30.

Full screen picture for contacts

I have recently upgrade to the iphone 5. I use MS Exchange to sync contacts and email. I want to have full screen picture for caller ID but it only gives me a thumbnail. Any suggestions to get full screen picture for caller ID?

It used to be that if you assigned the picture while on the phone, it was full screen. I remember reading around iOS 5 I believe that it only allowed for full screen, but I still have a couple that are only thumbnails that have been synced over from contacts in LinkedIn. Try assigning the picture from the phone itself and see if that changes it.

ATV2 on SD Projector via VGA?

I know VGA output cannot be adapted to HDMI without a converter box, but can it work the other way around? Obviously the picture wouldn't be 720p, but would I be able to display the ATV2 output with a HDMI to VGA adapter? And would the audio work? The projector can display 16:9 (4:3 native) if that matters. Thanks.

VGA doesn't carry sound, so you would need separate sound connection........... I assume you use one now since there is no mention of HDMI. The picture will transmit via VGA.
