Cannot get iPhoto 6 to reference instead of copy photos

I just installed iLife '06 on my Powerbook G4 (867Mhz, OS10.4.6) excited about the new feature that allows referencing rather than copying of photos.
I went to the Advanced Preference and unchecked the Copy Files option. To my dismay, the photos I imported after that do continue to copy files into the iPhoto structure. They're copied both into the Data folder, which I understand are the necessary thumbnails and into an Originals folder. I've checked the Preference repeatedly and it's always checked off.
Since I've tweaked that preference and not had any luck with referencing, I've tried restarting iPhoto, restarting the computer and trashing the iPhoto preference (com.apple
iPhoto.plist) in my Library.
The photos I'm trying to reference are photos off my digital camera that I've organized in my own file structure on my hard drive. I've tried dragging the folders into the Source pane (of album lists) and tried using the File-->Import to Feature option and it imports (copies) files in both methods.
Does anyone have any ideas of why I can't use the "do not copy" feature? I have waited with bated breath with every new release of iPhoto for this feature and am quite disappointed that I can't get it to work. I cannot find anyone else reporting the problem on these forums or in Google searches.

Try deleting the com.apple.iPhoto.plist.
You need to look in your user Library/Preferences for the .plist. Either hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command and select your user Library in your home folder or use the Finder “Go To Folder” command and enter ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Open iPhoto while holding down the command and option/alt keys and rebuild the library.
iPhoto Library rebuild
Open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist(s) from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist(s) to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you prefer to make your User library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
Show User Library
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.5. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

Cannot get iphoto to display imported pictures

Recently I used Duplicate Annihilator to remove duplicates from iphoto '09, which were imported from many folders of pictures (not directly from a camera) and I just noticed that all photos which had duplicates are now no longer in my photo library at all. This was around 2,000 photos. I used finder to search for a specific folder that I imported and that is no longer visible in iphoto and I am able to locate the folder and files of all missing pictures inside the iphoto library file.
So how do I get iphoto to display these files which are in the iphoto library but cannot be found in iphoto?
I have tried rebuilding the photo library by using command-alt-shift and opening iphoto, but it did not work. It did, however, create more duplicates which I am scared to annihilate out of fear that I will lose those completely as well.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Run the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos.
Fix #2
Start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
1. Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
2. Open the library package like this.
3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
4. Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.

How can I get iPhoto to see the edited iPhone 4s photo?

I have a new iPhone 4s. I take a picture. I edit it and save it to the iPhone. Then, I sync my phone with my Mac, open iPhoto. Only the original photos appear, not the one I edited and saved. Yet, if I e-mail the photo to myself, I can see the edited version. So, how do I get iPhoto to see the edited version.

8 MP is the resolution of the camera sensor. Images are compressed when stored so quite a bit smaller. The compression ratio depends on the level of detail in the image.

Had to install a new hard drive, and I cannot get iPhoto to install

I just had to replace the hard drive in my PowerBook, and I seem to be missing iPhoto after installing everything. All of the other iLife apps installed, but for some reason, no iPhoto in the Dock or in the Applications folder. I will explain what I did to restore my system in case I didn't do it correctly.
When I bought my PowerBook back in '05, it came with Panther, and when Tiger came out, I upgraded. Since the Tiger box and discs do not say "Upgrade" on them, I figured they are a full version of the OS and all of the iLife apps. Also, I thought that if it is only an upgrade that I would not be able to install the OS from the Tiger discs. I had no problems installing Tiger (without having to install Panther), but none of the iLife apps were on my computer. I got out my original Panther restore discs and chose to install applications, and it listed all of the iLife apps. When installation was complete, all of the apps were there except iPhoto. Doesn't make sense to me why it would install everything else and not iPhoto.
Can anyone help me?

I cannot get iPhoto to open.

I did update my iPhone last week while I was out of town. I have check all updates on the computer today and rebooted it several times. iPhoto will not open.
Any suggestions??

MacBook pro 2009 is slow and freezing after installing mountain lion. Cannot get iPhoto to open fully, other apps are freezing.

Help! I thought I was doing the right thing by installing Mountain Lion on my 2009 MacBook Pro. It took forever to download correctly and now it is performing so poorly (freezing during applications, have to use force quit, have to use power button to shut it down, etc.) that I wish I never installed it! I want my old operating system back!

Boot in safe mode.* This will cause certain caches maintained by the system to be rebuilt. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot than normal.
When the login screen appears, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test. There's no need to log in while in safe mode.

There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate. You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

There's a bug with iPhoto 9.5 and Mavericks in that slideshows from Albums do not play correctly if they are sorted manually. Only photos that have been sorted by date, keyword, rating or title will play from albums correctly.
To have a slideshow with photos sorted manually use the slideshow mode in iPhoto.
