Cannot Get Mail This account ____ is in use on another device.

Please help! Very frustrated. Just upgraded to a new iPhone 5 and the above message is displayed whenever I try to fetch my mail. Yes, I do leave my e-mail up on another device (my iMac)... I want my mail to come through on both devices, like it did before, with my previous iPhone. Advice on how to proceed????

Try a reset first: hold down the home button along with the power button until you see the Apple, then let go.

AAll at once I receive the error message " cannot get mail. Account in use on another device" do you know how this can be as I have turned off all other devices that could have the account open.

Just to be sure, change the password to your E-Mail account. After a few days you can change it back if the problem doesn't go away.

Mail problem: "The account ___ is in use on another device."

Sometimes when I launch Mail it says "The account _ is in use on another device" with the blank being my email address. This is not consistent but it seems to happen (or I notice it more) when I have not launch the app in a little while. The only other "device" that could be putting my account "in use," I suppose, is my iMac when it fetches mail periodically but I can't believe that this is the cause because I never experienced this with my iPhone 3G (3.1.3). Any ideas what is causing this?

I have the exact same problem, only my iphone 3Gs did it prior to the upgrade also. the strange thing is that it does seem to still get messages so they appear, only more slowly than what they appear on the mac book.

HT1430 receiving message "cannot get mail. account ... is in use on another device"

Phone does not receive email. Instead I receive message "cannot get mail. Account ... is in use on another device." No problem receiving mail on all other devices.

It is not a problem that is solvable by anyone. It is the way POP works. Set the polling time on your computer to 10 minutes or more and it will happen much less frequently. But it will still happen. Any time your phone tries to retrieve mail while your computer is actively retrieving mail you will get that message.
If your ISP does not offer IMAP service there isn't much you can do. Most don't BTW. I run a mail server that supports IMAP, and so does Yahoo, Microsoft, Google and Apple. But a lot of ISPs don't because either they want you to use webmail so they can track your usage or they don't like the fact that IMAP keeps the master copy of all mail on the server, so you will use much more storage than with POP.
One option is to get a gmail account and set it to retrieve your ISP mail. The read your mail with gmail. Google even lets you reply using your ISP's email address as the return address.

i have just purchased an iphone and tried to configure gmail on it, using the procedures given on the gmail site (https://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77702).
i receive the following error:
Cannot get mail
Invalid Credentials (failure)
I have tried:
adding another users account (my friends) - worked
changing my password so it doesnt have any uppercase or numbers - failed
using wifi and edge seperately - failed
The only major difference i can see between his account and mine is that my user name contains a . such as: [email protected]
i am at odds as to why i cant access my gmail account via the iphone when my mates works on my phone.

Recently getting the "Cannot Get Mail" message on the iPhone 4?

2 months ago when the message first started appearing we could close mail on the Mac mini, and then receive emails on the the iPhone, but not any more? Have not seen any new e-mails on the iPhone since May 5.
The message also says "The account Telus is in use on another device"?
Has anyone encountereed this same message before?

Cannot get mail message on 3G connection only?

When I try to check mail on 3G connection, it says my password or user name is incorrect. It works fine over wireless. I've tried reentering the password and reconfiguring, but nothing works over 3G.

It sounds like you might need to contact Yahoo! if you aren't able to setup your email account as a new account after deleting it.

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.

Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

Why would you delete your iCloud account for a password change with your Yahoo account?
Regardless, if no problem re-creating your iCloud account on your iPad, contact Yahoo technical support.

Reset the device.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button down at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

It sounds like you're seeing an alert message when opening Mail on your iOS devices. Do you have multiple email accounts setup on the devices? Due to a screen issue, I had my iPhone 5 replaced two days ago. I repeated deleted the mail account and kept adding it but this did not make any difference. When I attempted to setup the new phone with my Google (Gmail via exchange active sync) accounts I was receiving this same "Cannot Get Mail" error. From what I was able to gather, this problem should be affecting Gmail accounts set up via Exchange. When originally purchasing the phone I was assisted and directed to set up my Gmail account through Exchange because it had the ability to use "ActiveSync" and push not only mail and calendars, but all of my contacts as well. What it came down to was having to delete my Gmail via Exchange account and separate it into two different accounts, a regular gmail account for my mail and a CardDAV account for my contacts.
Here is what I did. Google is changing their system and for new registrars Exchange ActiveSync will not work so you will be unable to register your account via Exchange and have your mail, calenders, and contacts all pushed together. I find this change really annoying. If you are having problems accessing your contacts after deleting the mail account, like I was, here is the work around.
To circumvent this issue go to Setting > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > Other > Add CardDAV Account: Under server ender google.com, then your email user name and password, then click next to verify the information.

Have you tried deleting the account and re-adding it on the phone?
What version of Exchange server are you running?
