Cannot get Music or Video onto iPhone 5

Hi
I have a new Iphone 5 - 16gb,
I cannot download any of my purchased music or new purchase from the store - it runs through the download, gets to processing then fails with a "item cannot be downloaded at this time - Done or Retry"
I cannot sync any music from my PC (Sony Vaio). It appears to run through the process, but nothing transfers - under music on the iPhone the selection appears greyed out in iTunes, but cannot be seen from the device.
Match is not enabled. Auto Update is not enabled
It does actually sync photos.
My iPod Classic and Ipad (new one with lightening) work abosulutly fine.
So far I have:
Re-installed iTunes
Reset and restored iPhone
Changed from Manual to Automatic Sync
Changed endless spurous settings that have been suggested on various forums
After 5 hours of trying I am on the verge of giving up and returning to Android as the iPhone isn't fit for purpose.
If anyone has any ideas that will help I would be incredibly grateful as I really don't want to revert to my old phone.

Update
I reset the iPhone and set it up as a new phone (not using a previous backup). This seems to have fixed the problem with downloading purchases. I tried this with a purchase from yesterday and will try a couple of others.
I will try it with iTunes shortly and see if this has fixed this problem as well.
I am wondering if the problem stems from using a backup file originally created on my iPad to initially set up the phone.

Cannot get album to transfer onto iPhone

I have automatic synching set up in iTunes for my entire music library.
There are two new albums I have added to iTunes and I can see them sitting in my music library and I can play them through iTunes. However every time I sync my iphone and iTunes they show no sign of transferring. I have 4GB of space for them both, more than sufficient. iTunes never gives me an error message or any sign they didnt transfer. But every time I check my phone and look them up, be it under Artist or Album name, they are not there and havet transferred.
I have the latest version of iTunes and the latest iPhone software for my 4S. I'm running Windows 7.

I have also noticed that whilst in iTunes it is removing the album I tell it too to clear space for new ones- it is not removing these from my iPhone. So iTunes tells me it has 4gb of space but all the albums I removed are not removing themselves off my iPhone.

Getting video onto iPhone

Task: get .mov &c video onto iPhone.
So far I have managed to DL a file converter that has made a (really lo res) mp4 file out of a mov file, which is now in a playlist on iTunes. When I synch the phone, the file doesn't show up. How do I get it to be recognised by the iPhone?
Searched for an answer and read the cryptic msg that Apple want you to have different file sizes?!
This should be a breeze and it isn't!

Hi there, Try this. In iTunes go to "Video" tab in the iPhone summary. Click on "Sync" and "all TV shows" and finally try to sync again your iPhone. It should be there now. I hope.

You copy them from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer.
The iphone is not a backup/storage device.

I read your entire message, and my mom's iPhone 5 does this exact same thing. When the idiot at the AT&T store transferred her data (well, most of it) to her new phone, he DID NOT use her latest iCloud backup like he should have, but used some features in "Bump" to move things across. So, in my opinion, it's not worth the hassle of restoring it as a new device as Tim suggests. That's just the easy answer. Here's something odd about hers. It seems to do this, when she's using her bluetooth earpiece (a Jawbone Icon), but not when she's got bluetooth disabled on the iPhone 5 and holding down the "Home" button to activate Siri. If she uses her Jawbone bluetooth earpiece to activate Siri, the answer that Siri presents on the phone's screen will only stay on for about five seconds, then dim, then go blank -- and she has to "swipe to unlock" and, of course, the Siri information is gone. Not so if she uses the Home key to activate Siri.

If i put a new contact into the contacts on my iMac, it goes to iCloud but it does not do this when i input a new contact onto my iPhone. i have checked and all software is up to date. Since yesterday morning about 11:00 I have been having TERRIBLE email problems on this iPad 3G. Email comes in (I hear the sound) but nothing displays -- no folders, no content, no nothing in e-mail. The blank email screen shows up and then disappears after about 10 seconds, taking me back to the Home Screen.
Right now, the only way I can see email on this device is to log onto AOL via the AOL app.
I have been doing a lot of online reading about the problem. It has to do with iOS 8.1.3 and it affects older iPads and iPhones. I'm having no problems on my iPod touch, which -- fortunately -- is so old it cannot update its iOS 6.
I waited to update the iOS on this iPad until iOS 8 was "mature." That was about 2 weeks ago.

Press your home button, then scroll the home screen all the way over to the right. I found all my purchased apps were moved to a different home screen. Might be a similar issue.. let us know what you found out!!

KiltedTim- Yes, I have encountered an activation lock. The Apple ID should be the one that I use when I go into itunes but that one is not working. I even tried the Apple email/id I got when I first bought the phone years ago and that didn't work either. It is asking me for an id that ends in @me.com and I have NO IDEA what this is or how to get it to "shift focus" onto one of the id's I do know.
Does that make things clearer?

Okay. I hope I can remeber all my steps exactly because I fixed my own problem...with absolutely no help from Apple. I opened itunes. I connected my ipod touch to my computer. On my itunes page that shows my songs in the upper right side under the search library box there is an itunes button and since I am connected there is an ipod button. DO NOT CLICK THE ARROW in the ipod button...just click in the mail part of the button. On mine it opened to a summary page that gave info on my ipod. The menu bar has Summary, Apps, Tones, Music and more. I clicked on the Music button. I chose to Sync the entire music library. That replaced what was on my ipod but what was on there was going to be put back on so I was okay with it. I then clicked the Sync button on the lower right side and it sync'd and all my songs are on my ipod again. I hope this might help someone else. Good luck.

I just purchased a used iPad. 3rd gen. I cannot get music downloaded from my iTunes account to play on the speakers. Siri works. Sound on alerts works. But nothing from music I have downloaded. What is more confusing is volume buttons don't do anything and no sound bar appears in the control center. Thoughts?

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iDevice?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).
No data will be lost.

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
Restart your mobile device.
