Cannot get native resolution on my external monitor

System:
- IBM Thinkpad T42p (display works intermittently)
- Samsung Syncmaster 2333SW (1920x1080 native res.)
- ATI Mobility Fire GL T2 (Driver vers. 6.14.10.6422)
1920x 1080 does not seem to be available through control panel for my
external monitor-- I uncheck "Hide all modes", it makes 1600x1200
available and then 2048x1536 (the latter is too big for the physical
screen size).  I have been able to get the 1920x1080 before but not
since this morning when I used the laptop display with the monitor
detached and have since reattached the monitor.
I tried installing ATI Catalyst™ Display Driver off ATI/AMD's website but get
an error that the installer can't find a driver for my system, or
something close to that.  Is there a driver that will support the
1920x1080?  Why would the list of available resolutions skip from
1600x1200 to 2048x1536?
I have since reinstalled the ATI Mobility Fire GL T2 driver off lenovo's website and uninstalled the Samsung 2333sw driver (per the advice of Samsung's tech support as they said it causes conflicts.
How can I get the 1920x1080 back?
Thanks in advance!

  • Can I get mirrored displays on my external monitors?

So I've got a small recording studio and I just got two monitors for free and want to get them working with my Macbook Pro. I know that if I want 3 independent screens, I'll have to get an external box like the Diamond BVU195. So in lieu of doing that, I thought I'd just get a VGA splitter (run into a VGA to mini adaptor into the macbook), so both of the monitors would display the same thing (There's two seats in the studio, that way both people could easily look at the same thing). Is this possible? I've been told it is, but I can't get it to work. When I plug both monitors into the splitter, the left one doesn't flinch, and the right one goes black and gives me an error "Out of range of signal. Cannot display this video mode. Change computer display input to 1600x1200 @ 60 Hz". Neither 1600x1200 nor 60 Hz are valid options for me to change to, and clicking the mirroring option in the display settings only makes the right screen and my macbook screen identical. I'd like the macbook screen independent of the two external screens. Any ideas?

No, no 15" MBP screen is capable of 1920 x 1080 or 1920 x 1200 resolution. To get higher resolution on your external monitor than on your built-in display, put the external monitor into Extended Desktop mode instead of Mirrored mode. Then you can set their resolutions separately and use each at its maximum resolution. To toggle between E.D. and Mirrored, press Command + F1.

  • Cannot get native 1440x900 resolution

Hey guys. I just upgraded to snow leopard and after using it for a few days, the resolution on my external monitor got warped suddenly and now I can't change the resolution back to the native 1440x900 60Hz. Although there are other resolutions available, it doesn't look clear on the monitor. I would appreciate any answers given. Thanks. (By the way, it's connect by mini-dvi to VGA)
    Early 2008 White Macbook 2.4Ghz

i don't have a direct answer, but you could just fiddle around with different settings on both the monitor and the computer. sometimes, you'll end up with different settings for each depending on the output of the picture. sometimes at school, i'll connect to an LCD projector and i get a really bad resolution on the computer, but its fine on the screen. you just have to try different things to get the best result. it shouldn't be an issue of the OS.
    hope that helps!

  • Portege Z30-A-18M - cannot set native resolution on external display

    Hi,
I have tried to connect two different full HD displays to my Portege Z30-A-18M and I was unable to set the native resolution - maximal resolution that I can set for those is 1680x1050... I wasn't so surprised with the first one as I had some troubles with native resolution when I was connecting it to the Satellite laptop that I had before. But then the same happened when I tried the other display.
I thought that this laptop can handle higher external resolution... Is there a way how to force the native resolution for the external diplays in Windows 7?
    Thanks!

Well, I wanted to use it as extended desktop... But I tried now to set it only to external device and I am still getting 1680x1050 as max
Just a note, the first display was connected with analog (D-SUB) and the second with digital (HDMI) ...
Is there a way how to override the maximum and set my own custom resolution?

  • How to get full resolution on Samsung E2420L monitor?

I bought a Samsung E2420L external monitor for my MacBook Pro.  The box says 1920 x 1080, however I can't seem to get the Mac to push more than 1600 x 900.  Samsung doesn't list any Mac drivers, how can I get the full resolution?
    Thanks!

Use extended mode rather than mirrored mode in your display settings on your computer. Uncheck mirrored". Mirrored mode mirrors your computer display, including the resolution, to the external monitor. Extended mode lets you use the external monitor's native resolution.

  • What is the maximum resolution for an external monitor for a 13" BMP

I have a new MBP 13 and a new Samsung LED 23" monitor that is spec'd at 1920x1080 resolution. However the maximum resolution I can get (using Display) for the external monitor is 1600x900 (or 1600x1200 stretched). What could be causing this limitation?

Are you guys able to resolve the issue with the Samsung HDTV LCD monitor? I just bought the Samsung B2230HD but having some image issue. I am connecting to the LCD from my macbook pro using Mini Display Port -> DVI -> HDMI but the image on the LCD is very grainy where the text is not sharp at all. The mac is able to detect the correct resolution of 1920x1080 though

  • White screen, but you could get the display via an external monitor.

    Hi,
A few weeks ago, my Macbook pro(A1212) stopped displaying. It only showed a white screen, but you could get the display via an external monitor. A friend looked at it and we discovered a burnt Mosfet (SI3443DV) which was item Q9400 on the motherboard. He went and changed it but it only displayed for less than 5 minutes and it went back to the white screen. would you please advice on what to do since i am not in a financial position to take it for repairs at the apple store?
    Joe

    Forget it.
1: If it was tampered with, then it doesn't qualify for warranty or AppleCare.
2: Repairing it will incur a new expensive logicboard, because that's how they do things. Swap parts out.
3: No money, means no Mac.
Sorry. We don't do hardware repairs here.

  • Satellite M50-156: How can I change resolution for my external monitor?

    Hi,
I bought an exernal monitor for my laptop M50-156 which has a resolution of 1920x1080.
But the problem is that such a resolution is not available in the display settings of my computer!
I tried to update the graphic card and chipset, but the max resolution I have is 1280x1024!
So my external monitor cannot display properly :( Did anybody have the same problem?
    Please help.. Thanks.
    Beb

    > But the problem is that such a resolution is not available in the display settings of my computer!
The resolution is not available and this says everything!!! Its not possible to choose this and you will have to use another resolution!
There are two reasons why your favorite external resolution is not available:
    1) the graphic card chip does not support this
    2) or the graphic card driver does not contain this resolution.
In your user manual you can find all supported and available external resolution
But I assume the 1920x1080 is not supported

  • T420s - Unable to set high resolution when on external monitor via DP.

    Sorry, let me clarify -
Unlike the OP, I do *not* switch back to 50 Hz on battery. However, I am running the NVIDIA beta driver. I installed this because with the Lenovo driver, the machine was not outputiting 2560x1600 over the display port. The highest resolution it would output was 2048 x 1000-something (out of the office now and don't have the exact numbers).
So yes, with the Lenovo driver the external DP was working, just not outputting the highest resolution. Installing the Nvidia driver fixed that problem. Whether it is related or not, I don't know, but with this driver I do not get 50Hz resolution on the LCD on battery -- everything stays at 60.
I have not rolled back to the Lenovo driver to test whethe this is reall a driver issue, but suggest that the OP try out the Nvidia driver.
edit note: Change subject to match description.

The unable to set high resolution issue on the T420 (not the T420s) was sent to engineering by JameZ just a few days ago. See more here. I suggest you post there or contact JameZ so they know it also occurs on the T420s.

  • Can no longer get native resolution on monitor

For the better part of a year I had two twin Viewsonic monitors set at 1440x900 with my Mac Pro (late 2011) Radeon 5770. One plugged right into the DVI, then another with an Apple Mini-DP to VGA adapter. Everything was fine, and I'm not sure what changed, but now, suddenly, I cannot find the correct resolution in Displays, and it is simply displayed as "VGA Display" and the display is blurry. I have reset the PRAM, reset the settings on the monitor, repaired disk permissions, thrown away some system prefs files I found via Google, and plugged cables in every possible combination (as I have a myriad of such cables), I even have a secondary Mini-Displayport to VGA adapter. All signs point to software. I have the latest update of Mac OS X Lion.  I have even tried SwitchResX to no avail, but to be honest, I didn't spend the hours of time it would take to study monitor technology, refresh rates, hsync, vsync, etc etc...
Can anyone help with a suggestion, I'm going bannanas over here... I have Applecare but I'm sure they'll just tell me fresh to reinstall Mac OS X. (Hrmm sounds like Windows.. Oh yeah, that reminds me... in Bootcamp the monitors work fine.)

it is simply displayed as "VGA Display"
That is how your Display Identified itself to Mac OS X. If the display only provides that as a name, and does not provide its full capabilities, Mac OS X cannot determine its true capabilities and you get an abbreviated set of resolutions to avoid damaging your display.
As you discovered, you can use a cheater program like SwitchResX.
There is nothing wrong with your Mac. That is the way it was designed.
There is nothing wrong with these Forums, either. They have always been User-to-User forums, and Apple never posts here. If you want Apple to help, you need to take your equipment to an Apple Store (free evaluation) or call AppleCare and pay their charges (which they may waive later for certain problems) if you are out of your free phone support period.

  • Cannot get Eyefinity to work past 4 monitors

I have been unable to make my MSI R5870 enter Eyefinity mode on more than 4 monitors. The monitors are all displayport. I have 4 x NEC EA231WMi and 2 x NEC E231W displayport monitors. They are all connected directly to the MSI R5870 Eyefinity card by mini-displayport to displayport cables. I am running the latest Catalyst driver (version 11.6).
Whenever I try to enable 3 X 2 Eyefinity mode the screens flash for a several seconds then it just goes back to the first screen (or often another screen) asking what kind of group I want to create (3X2, 2X2, 4X1, 3X1, etc).  Sometimes it tells me that my display configuration has changed and does nothing. Sometimes it tells me it succeeded in creating the 3X2 group, but only one monitor will be on.
I have even tried moving the cables around to  different ports of the video card with no success.

What's the exact video card model? ==> http://www.msi.com/service/search/?kw=R5870&type=product
    R5870 Eyefinity 6 or?
have you tried vga drivers from msi web?
    So at current state it up to x4 max? i assume [ 4 x NEC EA231WMi ]
Have you tried in such case to mix 2x NEC EA231WMi and 2 x NEC E231W and check if they can work together?
I was finally able to get 3 x 2 Eyefinity by going with 6 DVI cables on Accell active mini-DP to DVI adapters. Someone screwed up somewhere with either AMD not outputting from the card correctly, the cables not truly being DP-compliant, or NEC with not letting the correct signal or whatever work on their monitors. If I were to do it over again.... I would not do Eyefinity. It was too much hassle!

  • Why is the resolution of my external monitor so low?

I have a 22" monitor hooked up to my Macbook Air via HDMI. However, it doesn't look as crisp as my laptop's screen. The monitor is set to "1080p" and is suppose to be an HD monitor.
Does anyone have any suggestions for fix this? I've googled around but haven't found any solution.

So the pictures hardly show a difference, but both my friend and I agree that there is a clear differene the picture quality of my laptop and the monitor.
