Cannot get past "Prepare Hard Drive(s)"

I'm installing from the 2010.05-core 64 bit iso into a VirtualBox guest.
All went fine when I partitioned the disk with the Auto-Prepare option. However, I didn't like those partitions, so I created a whole new disk and started again.
I then prepared the partition using the manual option. That seemed to go OK. I created all the partitions, wrote them to disk, and quit.
When I got back to the main menu, "Select Source" was highlighted. I tried to move on to "Select Packages", but I got a message that told me I had to do prepare the hard drive first.
When I went into the Prepare-Drive option, I found that my partitions were all there, and it all looked fine.
But no matter what I did, I couldn't get into the "Select Packages" option. It kept telling me that I had to prepare the drive, even though I had.
I thought of modifying the setup script, but it's not so straight-forward.
What's going on? Can I fix this?

  • Cannot get brand new hard drive to work. Disk utility states operation not supported when I try to erase or partition?

Without any success, I cannot get my hard drive to work in disk utilities. I am able to see the disk in the upper left hand column, but when trying to initiliaze the software always reads operation not supported. Any ideas?

You probably have too new a hard disk.  Contact the hard disk manufacturer and ask what jumper setting is needed to drop to 1.5 Gbps SATA speed.
Either that, or return the disk, and go to http://www.macsales.com/
They can be sure to equip you with a proper hard disk.
Note formatting is key as well:

  • I cannot get the external hard drive on Airport to be used for Time Machine

I have an Airport Extreme (latest edition I believe) with all updates.  I hooked up a powered hard drive to it via usb.  When I go into the Airport Utility, I can see the disk (kind of grayed out) under disks.  It even says the right size of space remaining.  But I can't see how to choose it or do anything with it.  I want to be able to do Time Machine backups with it.  Any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, what you are trying to do is not supported by Apple, so you'll have to keep an open mind about all of this if you want to try it anyway.
It does seem to work for some users, it works for some other users some of the time, and some users have no success at all with this. I've tried this maybe 10-12 times over the past few years, and I remain in the "no success" category.
First, you need to make sure that the drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Second, you probably will need to use a powered USB hub even though your drive is powered
Then you have to set up Time Machine as follows:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Turn "ON" Time Machine
    Click Select Disk
If your disk appears (it may not....remember this is not supported) click on it to highlight it
    Click Use for Backup
if the backup is successful, please keep in mind that most problems tend to surface a few weeks to even a few months after you start the backups. They become corrupted and you usually have to erase the drive and start over again.
So, you would probably want to set up a secondary back up plan as well to keep your important data safe.

  • Help! Boot Camp Trouble, Cannot Get Back To Hard Drive Contents

Ok, I have a 24 inch iMac running Leopard, and today I tried to install Windows XP. I opened Boot Camp and partitioned my terabyte drive, giving 40 gigs to Windows. I inserted the XP Installation disk and waited for it to install. It did, and when it tried to run Windows, it said there was an error. It went to a black screen, asking to run it normally, or in safe mode. I tried all of the choices, and nothing worked. I got stuck.
I inserted my Tiger install disk (the one the computer came with), and booted from that. It asked to install, but I was worried I'd erase my hard drive. Instead I installed Tiger to an external hard drive, and booted from that.
On the desktop my internal drive shows up, but when I open it, it only has the Windows components. And it says it's only 426 gigs.
So now I don't know what to do. My Leopard disk is at work, so I assume I need to install that first, but I'm worried I'll lose the info on my hard drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Time Capsule cannot get past "Preparing"

I have tried to back up my files several times today using time capsule; however, the time capsule status stays at "Preparing" and it does not progress to copy the files. This is not my first backup. I have stopped the process twice already after waiting for about an hour. After restarting my computer and trying the backup again, it is still in preparing mode. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I am having the same problem. I "erased" the disk and started all over again. I am trying to back up my iMac Desktop using system 10.6 and TC 7.4.2
The "Time Machine" screen under "Next Backup" says "making backup disk available" and in the "Menu" it says "preparing backup". Its been doing this for nearly 3 hours now. I have 115 GB to backup.
Before doing the latest that still running, I erased the disk, deleted the apple.com.timemachine preference file and restarted my computer and still does not work. I do not use any anti virus programs.
I have Macbook Pro that I have backed up using Time Machine and it worked fine but it won't do it from my desktop.
    Frustrated!

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

    Then repair the backup/TM drive.

  • Another iBook cannot get past the grey screen with spinning gear

I have read the other posts on iBooks not starting up. I too have used Onyx recently but this was to cure the problem of a freeze. Now start up cannot get past the grey screen. PRAM has been zapped and safe mode will not work. Worse, the CD drive will take CDs so cannot go back to start up disk.
Bizarrely, a visit to the Apple Store and the iBook started no problem. System was reinstalled using archive option and various health checks apparently showed no problems. But then got back home and again start up froze at grey screen with spinning gear. I have left it on this for over 15 minutes but to no avail. I have tried to connect to another ibook using T key to get target mode. I'm not sure if I am doing this right. I have started up working iBook plugged in the firewire to both machines and then started up ailing iBook holding down T key. 2nd iBook wont start at all.
    Any suggestions?

An Archive and Install will preserve you user settings and data. You will need a minimum of 5 GB free on the hard drive to perform an A&I; you can reduce the space required by about 1 GB by selecting the option to install language support only for the language you use (assuming you don't need multiple languages).
However, after seeing your other post (BTW, it'll be easier to keep track if relted issues are in the same thread), you do not want to try an A&I if Disk Utility is reporting anything about 'could not be repaired'. Doing so will would ensure problems down the road, if it worked at all. It's possible for one disk problem to mask another. Whenever Disk Utility (or any other repair utility) reports making repairs, it's good practice to repeat the repair until it reports no problems found or it becomes clear it cannot repair the disk.
DiskWarrior has an excellent track record at repairing problems that Disk Utility cannot (especially Disk Utility versions prior to OS X 10.4.2).
If the drive cannot be repaired, you may be able to keep it by doing an erase install with the write zeros (one pass) option. That will update the hard drive firmware record of bad disk sectors to avoid using. If there are only a few bad sectors, that may let you keep using the hard drive for several more years. An erase install will do just that to your data, through. If you have access to another Mac with either a large amount of free disk space of a DVD burner, you can try using the other Mac as host and the eMac as target in FireWire target disk mode. You can run the host's copy of Disk Utility on the eMac hard drive, and hopefully be able to mount the emac HD so that you can back up the data in your Home directory.

  • Cannot get past login screen

I cannot get past the login screen. I ran the disk utility to verify/repair my hard drive. The tool fixed a minor sequencing issue which resulted in a "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be ok. That did not fix the problem. Next, I tried booting in safe mode. I cannot. I'm thinking my next step is to reinstall the OS X from the Mac Utilities Suite. My fear is that it is going to erase my Hard Drive. True? Will performing this function erase my locally stored data (files, photos contained with iPhoto)?

  • I cannot connect my external hard drives (1 WD My Passport and 1 LaCie Porsche Design). The drives were connected and worked perfect, the WD is used as a Time Capsule, the LaCie is formatted as exFAT and used for miscellaneous. They are both USB 3.0

I cannot connect my external hard drives any longer. I have one WD "My Passport" used as a Time Capsule and one LaCie Porsche Design used for all different kind of data, formatted in exFAT. They worked fine, connected direct or through an additional USB hub or also attached to a Dell monitor. The Lacie helds my iTunes Library and the iPhoto library.
After I moved the iTunes library to the external drive, from time to time the drive went into a never ending loop and I had to shut down the laptop (MacBook Air).
The last time starting again the drives were not recognized any longer. I tried to connect them to another MacBook, which didn't work.
Starting with Windows 7, the WD is also not recognized at all (perhaps because of time capsule format?) and the LaCie gives an error.
Could anybody tell me if there is a chance to get them alive again? When I connect them now, they start to heat up quite fast without anything else happening.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Just want to clarify, have you checked to make sure the cords are not damaged  (going from hard drive to computer and or any power source )?
You have also check to make sure that usb ports are working correctly?
If you have checked these things it may be that the external drives have failed.
I would google the error message from the LaCie drive before I do anything.
There are several ways that I know of,  one is to put the hard drive in the freezer for a while (make sure you wrap it air tight) if this works it is not a permenint fix. You might be able to transfer information to another source.
The other method is to plug the hard drive into a hard drive connector a product like this:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817707192
to do this you would have to remove the hard drive from its enclosure and still this is not a guarantee it will work.
The finally way I know is using a recovery service. This can be rather expensive, and  there are no guarantees

  • I have an iMac 21.5 inch purchased in 2011 with a failing 1TB Seagate hard drive. Can I get a replacement hard drive?

I have an iMac 21.5 inch purchased in 2011 with a failing 1TB Seagate hard drive. Can I get a replacement hard drive thru the Apple Replacement Program? I did purchase the Applecare Plan but it expired in Dec. 2013.

FWIW, if you purchased the iMac in 2011 and purchased Applecare, you are covered for a total of 3 years. You mentioned yours expired in December 2013 - that cannot be unless you bought yours in 2010. If you bought it in December 2011, you should still be covered until December 2014 - if so, contact Apple/make a Genius Bar appointment quickly so the replacement is covered by the warranty. The hard drive replacement program might have expired, but as long as you're covered by Applecare, a drive replacement is covered.

  • Getting in the hard drive

I'm trying to set up an ipod touch here. How do I get into the hard drive? I go in and there is a dcim folder, but I can't put anything in there. I absolutely hate itunes and refuse to use it. Having to sync to get music on is the dumbest thing ever. My sansa clip is so much easier because I have full control and can just paste in what I want and manage it directly without using any crappy software. I want to do that with the ipod. How do I do it?

No product is right for everyone.
Many prefer itunes, many do not.
Just because you do not like the product does not render it useless to everyone.
You can sync via playlists or
    checked music or
    Manually managed (drag and drop).
If the product is not right for you, then find something that is.

The system on the original install dic is probably looking for the original video card.
It may be possible for someone with the right skills to make an install disc for you with the driver for your new card.

I had to get a new hard drive and some of my pictures show up but when I go to click on them to open them there is a triangle with an exclamation mark. Did I loose those pictures or is there a problem with iphoto

How about the most likely occurance - something incorrect about how the iPhoto library was transfered
What version of iPhoto '11 (9.4.3 is the latest)?
exactly how was your iPhoto library transfered to your new hard drive
This indicates that there is a problem in the iPhoto database - a possible solution to try is Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library
Why did you get a new hard drive? What kind of backup do you have?

At startup hold down the Command+Option/Alt+r keys until you see a globe on the screen. Then use disk utility to partition and format the drive HSF+ and then select Reinstall Mac OS X. whatever version of OS X that originally came on your system will be installed and then you can upgrade back to Mavericks.

  • Computer is getting a new hard drive and my iPods are full of all my stuff!

I have a 3rd generation Nano and a 160GB Classic iPod. Here is my problem and I am hoping that someone can tell me how to proceed through this. My computer crashed and is getting a new hard drive installed now. I have all of my music on the Nano and all of my movies on the Classic. When I get my computer back, it will be completely bare of anything other than the original operating system. How do I set up my new iTunes account so that it won't delete my entire saved libraries when I plug the Pods in the first time? Ideally, I would like to just transfer all of my old content straight back into the new iTunes library after I set it up.
Can anyone give me any guidance on how to pull this off?

I had the same problem when my computer crashed.
What you have to do is under the FILE menu, there is a thing known as Lybray/ Export Lybrary (Depending on your version of ITUNES) And click Export. Save it to a potable floppy/CD/Flash drive. When you get your new Computer, hit IMPORT, and click that file, and everything will be transfer over again. Ill be like you IPOD never left home! =D
