Cannot get Time Machine to work

I just installed Leopard on my Power MacG4. I can't get Time Machine to work. I have gone to Utilities and repaired partitions twice. That doesn't seem to be the problem. I have no idea what to do. Any ideas?

Maybe, maybe not. Via Disk Utility, when you click the first line for the drive (Make, Size), does it show the +Apple Partition Map+ down near the bottom, and when you click the second line, show +Mac OS Extended (journaled)?+ If not, that's at least part of the problem.
There should be better messages in your logs. Download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Navigate to the failed backup, then copy and post the messages here (be sure to get them all, as sometimes they overflow the small window).
Checked the disk utility and everything shows as you say it should. Here's the log:

OS is important.. What OS is on Mac and what is on the working macbook?
Was the Airport setup from the Macbook? That might be why it works from there..

  • HT1338 I have mountain lion and cant get time machine to work. the disk keeps getting ejected.

I just installed Mountain lion and i can't get time machine to work. every time i connect it time machine starts but then ejects the drive. I also tried to back up direct to the hard drive with the software that came with the drive and the same thing happens. Does anyone have a clue as to what may be wrong?

When that happens, you should get some sort of message.  If you don't remember it exactly, go to the Time Machine Preferences window -- there should be a red "Failed" message and icon there.  Click the icon to see the message.  Either report the wording or post a screenshot.
If not, a clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.

  • Cannot get Time Machine to "see" my AEBS USB disk?

I am trying to set up a Time Machine backup through my AEBS USB Disk.
The USB disk is formatted GUID with a single partition (1TB Fantom) and appears in the shared menu and mounts in the finder on all three of my computers on the AEBS.
I just cannot get it to show up in Time Machine as an available drive to back up to.
I partitioned using GUID as many posts suggest.
Drive appears in shared menu and mounts in finder
In Time Machine drive does not appear as a destination from all three of my computers on my network
    In Airport Utility
    Firmware version 7.4.1
File Sharing Tab: Enable File Sharing is checked
I have tried "with accounts", "with a disk password" and "with airport extreme password".
Remember this password in my keychain is checked
Airport Disks Guest Access: Read and Write
Share Disks over WAN (I tried checked and unchecked)
I am running 10.5.6 on all three Macs. A G5 tower and two MacBooks.
I have read a lot of troubleshooting posts on this issue, but I believe I have tried everything I should. I imagine it is something simple at this point.
Any thoughts and guidance greatly appreciated.
    Henry

Same problem here, but I have a work around, I'm not sure what is really required here and what is fluff, but this is how I got to it.
Directly connect the drive to your computer, and do your first Time Machine backup.
Disconnect from the computer and connect to the AEBS. I have mine shared as With Airport Extreme password and guest read/write enabled
    Go to Finder.
    There you will see
    your network name icon
    and an icon called All...
For me the network Icon will not connect to the drive, but... the All... icon will show the drive just fine. Navigate to the drive in Finder through the All... path.
Now start up Time Machine preferences, and you can select the AEBS drive. Note Without navigating to the drive through the finder the drive does not seem to mount to the system.
    You should be working now.
As a side note, I have a Lacie drive that when plugged in works fine. The network named Icon will show the drive just fine. The other drive (A Seagate) is in an Ultra box and will not mount through the network icon. This is just plain weird.
Now all I need is to find a way to auto mount the drive 8), and fix the can't login to the network icon... Challenges make the world go 'round.

  • TS1550 how do I get Time Machine to work again?

I am getting an error window saying: Time machine could not complete the back up. any ideas of what I could do to get it to work again?
Back up now doesn't work. Thanks.

  • Cannot get Time Capsule to Work as anything but Airport

I have had this problem off and on for months and have never been able to resolve it.  I have already reviewed all of the threads addressing this issue and none of them solved my problem.
My time capsule will not show up on my finder OR through airport.  If I restart it 2 or 3 times, airport will find it at which point I will again reconfigure it to act as my back-up drive with time machine.  However, immediately after the forced restart, my computer again fails to recognize it.
Notably, my wireless internet through time capsule always works.  Essentially, my time capsule is nothing more than an airport as I can't use it with time machine OR as a server to store documents through my finder.

What OS is on the computer?
You can load 5.6 utility if you are running Lion or Mountain Lion as follows.
How to load 5.6 into later Lion & ML
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.

  • I need help! I bought an external drive to backup the computer. but although the computer recognizes it (shows up on the right side with the icon - mybook3.0 - I cannot get time machine to look for a hard disc - it only wants to use airport!

I want to use time machine. So, I got a mybook3.0 and hooked it up. the computer recognizes it fine (shows the icon on the desktop etc) but time machine refuses to look for any hard disk, going on airport instead and refusing to let me select anything or do anything manually (buttons are not clickable - and anyway, no HD at all shows)
    I'm getting frustrated!!
    PLEASE HELP

Just to clarify - when you run Disk Utility (in your Utilities folder) the drive you bought doesn't show up in the window under your boot drive?
If it appears on your desktop, you should see it in the Disk Utility window as this displays all mounted drives.
You then click on the drive (Mybook3.0 or whatever it appears as), and choose Erase from the options on the right.
    Best Wishes.

  • Getting Time Machine to work with NAS Drives

Connect the drive and format it HFS+
for this example I will name it backup
Set it up as the Time Machine drive once formatted.
Go into system preferences and turn off Time Machine.
Go into FrontView and create a share, for this example I will name it backups, set a quota you want to use I did double my Mac's hard drive
    Open terminal
    type the following commands
    cd /
    cd Volumes
ls -a -l (make note of .00 filename)
    cp ./backup/.00filename ./backups/.00filename
    cp ./backup/.com.apple.timemachine.supported ./backups/.com.apple.timemachine.supported
    sudo umount backup
    sudo umount backups
then go back into Frontview and rename backups volume to backup
connect to ReadyNAS through finder afp://IPADDRESS
choose backup volume to connect to
    Relaunch TimeMachine...
    BAM!

Can anyone comment on whether this works reliably? I mean, it looks like Apple doesn't officially support it (given the complexity of the setup).
    Eric
Previous posts from some users who have tried this found some problems (others have not). The conclusion stated by experienced users was that Apple pulled the NAS support at the last minute (also the Airport extreme limitation) due to less than reliable operation. Everyone seems to be waiting for Apple to solve the problem and issue

  • How Do you get Time Machine to work with a network drive?

I have not been able to choose a Drive for Time Machine on a Network Drive. The network drive is active and shown on my desktop. How Do I use it?

Correct. Back up to a network volume (other than Time Capsule) is not supported, so if you want to do it you have to use the command line to set something as shown in the article.
Another option you could do would be to create a large disk image file on the NAS device and mount it on your client and back up to that. You'd use Disk Utility to create a large (say, 200 GB) sparse image on the network storage and then double click it to mount it on your machine and set TM to back up to that. I could show you how to do this in 30 seconds but instructing it over a forum post... not so easy

  • Can't get Time Machine to work at all..

I am very new to Mac, and have a Macbook running OS X 10.4.11 I have the 500 gb Time Capsule, but I can't find Time Machine anywhere.. do I need to upgrade my operating system? Sorry to be such a noob, but I am a recent convert, and it's a whole new world for me. thanks.

    Hi jayjay22
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Yes Time Machine is only available in 10.5, to upgrade you will need to purchase a retail copy of Leopard.

  • Machine that gets Time Machine Error ALL THE TIME

Lets try and list out all the machines that cannot get Time Machine to work all the time.
    Here is mine:
    Machine:
1st Gen Macbook Pro (June 06)
with upgraded HDD (160GB) and 2GB RAM
    TM HDD Tried:
ALL external HDD (USB and Firewire)
    Error:
The back up volume could not be found
    Other Notes:
Tired clean install, archive install, nothing works

Is the Drive formatted with a GUID partition? Look in Partitions in Disk Utilities. If it isn't GUID, set it to GUID, reformat, and try TM again.

  • I can't get Time Machine to recognize my external hard drive.

I bought a new hard drive when we moved last September and it backed up my files once or twice.  Now I cannot get Time Machine to recognize it at all.
I have tried to format it with Disc Utility and only get an error message:  Error: Unable to unmount volume for repair.  Is there anything I can do with this?

Is the drive showing up in finder?
Did you have it working then upgraded to Yosemite??
Amongst the many many bug in yosemite is a bug/s to do with no longer being able to use USB drive.
Did you try the fixes here.
OS X Yosemite: If a USB device isn’t working
Personally I would plug it into a computer running anything except Yosemite and you might find it works perfectly.. the issue then is not the drive.

  • GoFlex, Xfinity, & Time Machine not working together anymore. Any suggestions?

I have a GoFlex external harddrive connected to an Xfinity wireless modem. For over a year I was able to successfully back up (Time Machine) on two MacBook Pro. About 4 months ago, Time Machine would not complete the back up on either computer. After powering down all related devices and repowering everythign works consistently until the Time Machine back up starts. The back up will start and continue for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes the back up stops and the Xfintiy Modem stops wireless tramission. I have researched and attempted several different methods to resolve, but with no success.
Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution?

I am of no help to you... but maybe you can help me.
I can't get Time Machine to work with my GoFlex Home. I know it's not my wireless network. Because I've gone through a dsl modem/wifi by NetGear. Then a NetGear 2.4/5.0GHz wifi router and now Airport Extreme 5th gen.
TM recognize GoFlex Home as an acceptable disc for TM. But after a few seconds of trying to connect to it, it fails. I forget the exact reason though.
How did you connect to the GoFlex as a Time Machine?
