Cannot get to BIOS

To see if I need to update the BIOS on my T61, the directions say:
Turn off the computer.
Turn on the computer.
While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key.
The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version.
Turn off the computer.
Problem is, the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message does not display;
the blue ThinkVantage button does nothing;
Pressing the F1 key does nothing.
How do I solve this issue?
I am running as admin.
T61, 8892. XP going soon to 7. Firefox and IE.

Either you have something seriously wrong with your motherboard or you're not understanding what you're seeing. The machine cannot load the operating system until the bios loads and it will display a spash screen. It is possible to modify the spash screen and even replace it with a blank one, but even so you can still enter the bios by hitting the f1 key, you don't have to wait to be prompted but you do have to hit it at the right moment. By the time the OS begins to load it's too late.

Hello IBCH. I understand you've forgotten your BIOS password.
Is this a notebook or a desktop? The only HP 500 I can find is this; which is a notebook.
If this is your computer then you should post your question in the HP Business Boards as this is an Enterprise product. The normal steps for resolving this issue will be different than on a consumer model. The users on the Business Boards will have a better understand of what will work for this notebook. Here is a link to the HP Business Boards.
I hope this helps and that you have a great evening!

I have a old HP Pavilion Entertainment Notebook and the hard drive has locked, I have removed the HD and the message still appears, is there a way to get to the BIOS?

Thank You, The Lock message appears with the HD in or out, I took it our thinking I might could directly to the BIOS setup and disable it. I cannot get to the BIOS setup either way, I posted here because there are previous posts that mention a DriveLock Master password issued with the PC and several people were able to get theirs by providing PC information, please see earlier post. Also, one stream dealt with changing a jumper on the BIOS to reset it to factory settings.
From my understanding if the HDD was password locked in the previous laptop that laptop is the only one that can unlock it. Did you put the HDD back into the original laptop to attempt to access the HDD to unlock it? It's hard to tell if you did that or not?

• Cannot get into BIOS, No POST screen appear!

Here I am, stuck at the boot.
I am struggling for hours now but cannot make my Satellite L850-Y5310 to boot into BIOS. I have Ubuntu Linux installed on It and last time I remembered I was into bios I was experimenting with some new options like "Rapid Boot" or Fast boot (Not sure) but certainly that is the reason I am now unable to see any option to press 'any' key to get into bios or to select the boot device. As soon as I press the power button It takes me to the GRUB screen and Ubuntu boot up. That is really Fast as the Fastboot feature is expected to do but now it is nothing more than a trouble for me.
Anyone have any idea how can I access the BIOS now ? Just dont tell me get back to windows, I know there is an SSD containing the installation package and it will install a fresh copy of windows 7 for me but I just dont wanna do that.
I want to get back to the BIOS anyhow, or at least be able to see the POST screen so that I can press the respective key to enter the BIOS or Boot device selection menu.
Any help is highly appreciated.

When you have Fast Boot selected, you get into Setup by holding down the F2 key while starting the machine. While you are in the BIOS, you can change the Boot back to Normal. If you were using Windows 7, I could give you another way to change Fast Boot but I don't know whether it would work using Ubuntu. You can try by typing HWSetup in the Start/Search box, hit Enter and select the Boot Setting tab where you can make the change.

• P35 NEO2-FR startup problems, cannot get into BIOS

Hello!
So i recently bought new parts for my computer:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16GHz 1333Mhz
Motherboard: MSI P35 NEO2-FR
RAM: 2x Corsair TWIN2X 2048MB 6400 DDR2
PSU: Corsair Powersupply 550W (3.3v/30A, 5v/28A, 12V/41A)
Graphics Card: GeForce 7800 gtx (this part was not new, so i dont have any more details for it)
I start up my computer with only the CPU, graphics card and one RAM module installed, and a keyboard attached to the ps2 slot (using a converter) for simplicity. The problem is that the computer freezes up when the MSI screen comes up, and i cannot get into the BIOS. The LED lights on the motherboard is indicating the state "Testing base and extended memory". And b/c i go straight into the MSI start-up screen i am unable to find out what BIOS version i am running, though i am fairly sure (i have talked with another person that bought the same motherboard from the same shop as me at about the same time, and he is running BIOS v1.8) that it is 1.8 and it is therefore compitable with my cpu. I have also tried several different types of RAM with the same results. I am also very certain that i have all the cables plugged in correctly (have also tried resetting CMOS ALOT of times) but still the same result.
Does anyone have any clue what could be the problem ?

Have a look at the sticker on the BIOS Chip of the board to check the factory BIOS Version. The following picture shows the location of the chip on your board (it is actually a P35 Platinum, but it has the same PCB as the P35 Neo2-FR):

If you have an E8500, E0 (and not an E8500, C0) you will need BIOS v1.9 [A7345IMS.190] to have full support for your processor. You can identify your processor model by checking its sSpec number (on the CPU itself or on the box):
E8500, C0 ---> sSpec#=SLAPK {Supported since BIOS v1.6 [A7345IMS.160]}
E8500, E0 ---> sSpec#=SLB9K  {Supported since BIOS v1.9 [A7345IMS.190]}

Hi someotherguy,
Can you help me with this problem?
I hit enter to stop the normal boot and then appear a window to select different options:
- F1: Enter BIOS
- Another one I don't remember
- F12: Select bootable device
Any of the menus I've tryied to enter I got a message afterwards saying:
"Intel Boot Agent GE v1.3.81
PXE 2.1 Build 091 WfM 2.0)"
And just stays there. Nothing happens.
After pressing F1 or F12 or other, I got a small message saying press CTRL+S to enter the setup menu. If I press it, I enter in a menu just to change the amount of time that message appear and if I want it or not.
Can you help me?
I need to activate the virtualization on the BIOS in order to setup virtual machines!

• Cannot get xorg to work at all

Granted I have yet to try vesa, but frankly if I cannot get the fglrx driver to work then I am not interested in this distro. Following the wiki instructions has gotten me nowhere and forum searches have turned up 4 year old posts. I have installed Xorg 1.11 from the repository listed on the catalyst page. I have installed the drivers also from the repo listed on the wiki page. I have a Dell XPS 1645 with an AMD HD 5730. fglrx module is running radeon is blacklisted and is not running. nomodeset is on my kernel line. running Xorg -configure says no devices to configure. fglrxinfo says unable to open display (null). If I delete xorg.conf startx says failed to load module ati, vesa, and fbdev, and then says fatal error no screens found. If I run aticonfig --initial it creates xorg.conf, but startx still will not work. The screen will go blank like it is about to load but there is an error fglrx: no matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI :0@2:0:1) found and xinit: connection to server lost. Running Xorg -configure still states no devices to configure. I'm really hoping this is something stupid that I have missed doing, as I do want to use this distro but my time is not infinite, and ubuntu and friends are just so easy. Not like I've never run Arch or Gentoo before either. If my tone is off I'm sorry, it's 2:30 AM here and I'm tired

I also had trouble with my ATI Radeon after the upgrade and solved the problem by a revert.
For this I used (for "extra") the repository http://arm.konnichi.com/2012/03/10/extra/os/i686/
The archlinux wiki explains for "xorg" how to do reverts using such repositories ;-)
I now run upgrades like this (example as of today):
$ sudo pacman -Syuw --ignore ati-dri,libgl,xf86-input-evdev,xf86-video-ati,xf86-video-fbdev,xf86-video-vesa,xorg-server,xorg-server-common,xorg-xinput

I am trying to find the culprit. Besides xorg, I also blocked ati-dri and libgl. But they work fine on my PC.
Thus, this is ok:
ati-dri: package upgrade (7.11.2-1 => 8.0.1-2)
libgl: package upgrade (7.11.2-1 => 8.0.1-2)
In /etc/pacman.conf I entered:
# Pacman won't upgrade packages listed in IgnorePkg and members of IgnoreGroup
IgnorePkg = xorg-server-common
IgnoreGroup = xorg

• Can't get into BIOS on new Z97M-G43 Mobo

I just received all the components (below) for a new build. When I power the system up, I get a screen with the following:
EFI Shell Version 2.31 [4.633]
Current running mode 1.1.2 Map: Cannot find required map name
Press Esc in 5 seconds to skip startup.nsh, any other key to continue
Regardless of what I do, I cannot get into the BIOS. I have tried clearing the CMOS using the procedures documented here on the forum - both removing the CMOS battery and by using the jumper, both with the power off.
I removed all non-necessary connections - USB, HDD, DVD. The only things connected are power and the front panel power, reset and LED.
When I remove 2 of the 4 memory modules and restart, I get a message saying that the CPU or memory changed and to press F1 to go into setup. When I press F1, I only get a black screen. I also get a black screen if I press DEL repeatedly after turning on the system.
I am using a HDMI connection to my monitor.
What is the magic to get into the BIOS, or does this suggest something is wrong with the Mobo?
Many thanks!

remove power cord from the PSU 1st
then do >>Clear CMOS Guide<< and retest

• Recovery Incomplete, cannot get any further than insert media

I tried to perorm a system refresh on my windows 8 hp notebook m7-j020dx. a full system backup was perfromed just prior to the refresh just in case. once the refresh finished the laptop restarted one last time and a screen popped up stating restoration implete.
The list of errors are as followed
[6:58:36.74] ChkErrBB.CMD :     Detect some error during PININST_BBV.
[6:58:36.74] ChkErrBB.CMD :     Check c:\system.sav\Logs\BurnBootWarn.log
[6:58:36.76] ChkErrBB.CMD :     or, check c:\system.sav\Logs\BurnBootMerge.log
[6:58:36.77] --------------------------------------------------
[6:58:36.77] Critical error condition was detected at BBV1...
First of all I did not was to do a system restore just a system refresh. Second on the popup screen it says the restration did not complete. Please select one of the following buttons:
save log      details     Retry
I saved the log, I looked at the details but, when I click on Retry a new screen pops up that says Insert recovery Media. Unfortunately, I cannot get passed that point. I can hear the CD drive spin up and try to read in cd inside but nothing else.
I didn't remove the 6th disk but, it is not reading. I opened the CD drive and tried the 1st disk, still nothing is happening. I then tried the rest of the CD's 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th. Then, i tried hard booting the Notebook and agian the same screen came up and the same problem occurs.
I have also gone into bios and went through every possible system check and they all came back passed. (note; the only Thing I have done to the notebook hardware wise was have a samsung 840 series 250GB 840 series SSD professionally installed and had the information on the origional HDD migrated onto the SSD using the provided samsung migration software.) Any help would be greatly appreciated.
This question was solved.

• Email error - "cannot get mail"

Hi,
Just hoping for a little help!
We recently had an email account disconnected by our provider in error (we changed from a mobile Internet connection to home ADSL & requested an email retention, which didn't happen!)
After weeks of dealing with our incompetent provider we have finally got the email address reconnected however I am unable to get it to work on any of our devices (iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad 3, or home laptop). The account is definately active as emails are accessible through the providers website. The email address is an "additional mailbox" to the primary mailbox connected with the adsl.
The email address worked fine on our devices & laptop prior to the disconnection.
With the reconnection our provider advised we had to change the email settings to now be a pop3 account and provided the relevant details regarding servers, ports etc.. These details are exactly the same as the primary email address I have set up on all devices and which works perfectly.
I have tried deleting the account and re-adding, I have rebooted the devices and have double triple checked the settings. Still nothing! I just receive an error message saying "cannot get mail. The username or password for "pop3.xxxx.com" is incorrect." Though, I know the password is correct as its the same one we use to log in to the mailbox on our providers website and access the email.
Would anyone have any insight as to why only this particular email address can not be added to the devices "mail app"?? I love the ease of being able to just tap the mail icon and see all my different email accounts. I'd prefer to not have to manually login to our providers website to access mail on one account.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

• How to get into BIOS of Sat P200D? What is correct temp for CPU/VGA load?

I tried everything, pressing ESC after power-up,F1, ESC/F1, F2....i cannot get into the bios.
What is the proper procedure to get into the BIOS? I used the latest BIOS 1.70 from Toshiba homepage, i remember i didn't have this problem with the older bios.
Furthermore, what are correct temps for the CPU under extreme load as well as VGA testing with OCCT/Furmark or everest?
If i run OCCT (extreme CPU stress test) i am getting some extreme numbers up to 95 degree on the CPU...
Thanks!

*SOLVED!!!*
It was indeed the case that any standard VGA resolution (like bios screen and bootup screen) was not displayed on the laptop!
Thats why i only saw a black screen!
I plugged an external monitor on it, and i see i am actually in BIOS.
So i went into the BIOS (using the other monitor) and changed the the setting "Analog + External", and now it works and i also have the toshiba logo back and everything

• I cannot get my password accepted to enter my nnotebook HP G62

I have had the same password since purchase.but now I cannot get my HP G62 to accepr it.
Have tried to correct on F10 but no good.

if its the administration or log in password, you will need to perform a full system reset to remove it, then create a new account, yo'll basically loose everything.
but if its the power on password, which ussually locks even the acces to your BIOS, (you said you can still access the BIOS so its probably not it) you will need to remove the CMOS battery and then just put it back to remove the power on password

• Cannot get past hp screen

Have HP Pavilion S3700y about 2 yrs old. Was shut down correctly last night, went to sign onto the computer and cannot get past the HP Invert screen. Rebooted and pressed F8, nothing,Rebooted and tried F10 for Bios... nothing... just the HP screen. Ideas?
thanks in advance

We have had a number of demo devices that have been sold by some stores and these will not set up a HP webOS account due to the serial number. I was checking to see if you had one of these devices; but you serial number is for a 32G consumer device and should set up properly.
The webOS doctor does wipe the partition that the ROM is on, but not the partition that any data is stored. Was this device new in a sealed box, or an open box?
You could try a full erase by holding the power button, the volume down button, and the center button simultaneously for 5 seconds. This should initiate a full erase of this device.

• Laptop won't boot, can't get into BIOS.

I have a Satellite P55t-A5116, with windows 8.1. The other day I went into the Toshiba password utility and set a user password, and when the machine reboots, nothing happens. No sign in screen, no place to enter the password, nothing. I cannot get into the BIOS, having tried holding down the ESC, F2, F8, and F12 keys. I also tried holding down the Fn key plus the F2, F8, and F12 keys. I have tried to boot with my Toshiba System recovery disc ( that might be a windows 8 disc, I made it when I got the laptop in March), or an Unbuntu disc. Below is a screenshot of what I get when the machine starts. Did the BIOS get corrupted when I entered the password? If I pop out the CMOS battery, will that fix it? Any help and suggestions is much appreciated.

I'm not sure how setting the password would cause this. You might want to try these suggestions:

• Cannot get Wireless to work

I have a brand new W520 for my company and we cannot get wireless to work. Here is what I tried.
Clean install of Windows 7 Professional
Installed the ThinkVantage tools, including Access Connections.
Installed the drivers from the Lenvo Support site. Had to install manually as Lenovo System Update would not return anything for me to install, even when I had a ton of missing drivers.
Installed the ThinkPad Wireless LAN drivers for the wireless card in my system. I have the ThinkPad b/g/n card.
No wireless adapter is found for the wireless, just the Intel 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection which works fine for the wired connection.
The wireless radio is on. I flipped the switch mutliple times. The screen seems to flicker when I flip it but nothing happens.
ThinkVantage Access Connections says "No supported wireless adapters are installed on the system" when I click "Manage Wireless Radio".
I verified the card is seated properly and the connections are all tight.
I ran a PC Doctor scan (from boot disk) against the wireless card and it Passed.
In Device Manager I have two items remaining that show issues.
Base System Device
Network Controller
I can't seem to resolve those two items in device manager with any of the drivers I've found on the Lenovo support site.
Any suggestions?

Hi egregorich,
Check in the BIOS whether it's enabled, F1 to enter the BIOS, it should be under Config -> Networks.
Also, can you let us know what does the sticker on the card say? Does it say Intel Wimax 5150 or 5350?
Try the following driver, the one on this support page is incorrectly linked as ThinkPad driver when it's not (or unless the ThinkPad card in your system is from Intel which I highly doubt):- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-76909
