Cannot hear audio input live on vista laptop

I have just bought a Toshiba Qosimio and have been trying to record tracks from external mixer. I can record okay but cannot hear the imput signal while it is recording. I used to have xp and it there was no problem.
I have checked the device manager and the input card is the same as the output card and the input signal shows on the monitor record level on the bottom of the screen but I cannot get the laptop to play untill it becomes a wav. I am using headphones for recording and the speaker output is disabled when this happens as usual.
Has anyone got a possible solution to this problem?
Please feel free to ask any clarifing questions?
Regards Sean.

cheers Steve;
I've only worked with Dulls in the past
even the old p2 inspiron w win2k we used to have
would mute the audio out as soon as the line in was detected
the internal speaker would mute and I couldn't monitor unless I plugged in a headset
(that ancient thing only had an 8-bit card too)
and the most recent machine is a Dull Latitude D620 XP machine and everything is muted
yeah Vi$ta is an audio nightmare right from the getgo
but in their quest for DRM dominance they wiped the old HAL audio stack and replaced it the current junk
I think best bet is to find out if the internal card with (*retail version drivers) would support it
check the sound device mfg. web site for drivers and the Q&A if they have it.
if not then it's really a choice of USB audio interface or PCMCIA card (if there's a slot)
*(by retail version drivers I mean drivers that haven't been buggered by the PC company)
I've noticed this a lot with the Dull drivers versus the mfg drivers
ie. Sound Blaster drivers from Dull have less features and functionality than if I were to DL the Drivers from the Creative site

what happened to the word "with"
supposed to say ...replaced it with the current junk"
"with" disappeared and I know I typed it.
anyway yes do check for hidden / disabled devices as Steve mentioned

  • Help...cannot get audio input monitoring t work

when punching in..I cannot hear audio before and after punch. Please help!!!

Try deactivating Input monitoring so you'll hear the track before and after the punch - like that you're actually listening "post tape". If you have an external Audio Interface/Mixer with monitoring capabilities use that instead.

    Hi,
The first thing I would suggest is to run through the guide by Daniel_Potyrala on the link below to completely uninstall and then reinstall the Flash Player Plug-in.

  • Cannot hear audio on playback

Got a bug report for you here I think. I have multiple clips in a timeline, some clips I can hear audio, other clips I cannot hear audio. I have been using Premiere Pro for 10 years. So, you can skip the questions like, "is the track turned on", or "is it one side of the channel that's not playing". what I can tell you is that it's random. Sometimes the audio comes through, sometimes it doesn't (on the same clip). There are wave forms for the audio in the timeline. And not matter what audio track I put it on, it doesn't fix itself. And like I said, it's random. So, a clip works fine one time, then later when I'm going over the same clips, I can't hear audio on it. Any ideas?????

    Check your audio driver.

  • Cannot hear audio from external iSight

My machine is a 2007 Mac Pro octo, 16GB RAM, OS 10.5.2. Software Update reports the system as up-to-date.
I just got an external iSight webcam. It's recognized by System Profiler as model 0x8, revision 1.0.3. (For unknown reasons it's reported as having four sub-units and a 200MB/sec connection speed.) iSight Updater reports the unit as up-to-date.
Its video appears in iChat's (4.0.2) video preview window, and the video's quality is acceptable. The audio meter at the bottom of the preview displays a signal that varies in response to the sound level in the iSight's environment.
The iSight appears in System Prefs/Sound as a FireWire input. The display there varies with the environment's sound level, and is responsive to changes in the Input Volume setting on the same screen.
The iSight shows up in Audio MIDI Setup as a fixed one-channel, 16-bit, 48kHz audio source.
The above tells me the iSight is producing an audio signal. Nothing I've been able to do, however, has permitted me actually to hear this audio signal. Whether I select the Mac Pro's built-in output, its built-in line output, or an external FireWire audio interface, I cannot hear the iSight's audio. Using these same configurations, however, I can hear audio from QuickTime Player or any other audio app I've tried, as well as all system alerts. The problem seems to lie in the signal's routing.
I've followed this forum's maintenance and troubleshooting guidelines, including isolating the iSight on the FireWire bus and repairing permissions from a second 10.5.2 start-up drive.
I've spent several hours searching for clues about what might be happening, but have exhausted the suggestions I could find.
Does anyone have any further thoughts on how I might go about capturing this camera's audio signal?
I'd appreciate any assistance that gets me there.
    Thanks.

    Hello Hominahomina
You sound like an experienced Mac user, and you have tried most of the things that can cause this problem. You probably have already checked to be certain that your iChat > Video > Microphone Enabled has a check (tick) mark.
If so, the next suspect I can suggest for your consideration is a possible hardware or software conflict with your "external FireWire audio interface". Disconnect it and test iSight audio again. If it still does not work, uninstall any software that was installed with your audio interface and try again.
If that does not help, you can use any of the suggestions from How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional that you have not already tried.
If, when you play back the file, you can hear the sound recorded with your iSight using iMovie (4 or later), QuickTime Pro, or some other app that can record audio, your iSight itself cannot be the problem. You may have a corrupted iChat preference file. Try this:
    • quit iChat if it is running
    • delete your Home(User)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.ichat.plist file.
A new .plist file will be created the next time you launch iChat, but deleting the .plist file deletes several iChat preference settings, so those you want to be different from the default values will need to be reset.
If all else fails, your external iSight likely needs help form an Apple Service Technician. The external iSight you bought is likely not covered by Apple Warranty. If the seller is not providing you service guarantees or warranty, you may be want to check Apple's iSight Service: Frequently Asked Questions. If your external iSight needs parts that you or your Service Technician cannot locate, http://www.synaptech.com may be able to help you obtain those that are still available.
BTW, your posted system info shows Mac OS X (10.4.10), but you say that you repaired permissions from "a second 10.5.2 start-up drive." Hopefully, your posted info merely needs to be updated. Although we must start from a different disk to repair a disk, I am sure you know that we repair permissions on a startup disk using its disk utility when started from that drive. For benefit of less experienced readers, don't repair permissions for a disk with one Mac OS version (like 10.4.x) when started up from a different Mac OS like 10.5.x because doing so can cause serious permissions problems.

  • Attendees cannot hear audio during meeting

After an internal user joins an online Lync meeting they cannot hear the presenter's audio.  We have checked the presenters Lync client and verified that the audio and video settings on the client are set up properly.  The presenter is using
    the Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000 headset.

Hey Do you have the problem only on Meeting? The media flow in meetings is normaly from the client to the front end and from the front end to the clients. Depending on your location the edge can also be into the mediaflow! Check the log on the clients
trace-folder with snooper. You can also have a look into the communication with netmon. If you have access to the firewall check it for drops, but not all drops aren't incorrect. You should validate the communication with the network flow poster! Greets

  • Cannot hear audio on a presentation created on Powerpoint, but being played on Keynote.

We have a MAC OS X 10.9.3.  We have Keynote on our computer.  When I download a Powerpoint created by my college professor and play it on Keynote, I cannot hear the audio narration.  I have researched this issue on the internet and cannot find a solution.  Does anyone have any experience with this?

This depends on which version of PowerPoint created the file, and whether its a Mac or Windows version.
We deal with twelve different versions of PowerPoint coming in from clients, quite a nightmare.
A work around is to use PowerPoint for Mac (obviously), Open Office or Libra Office to obtain the sound file and copy that into Keynote or to save the file in a newer version of PowerPoint so that it can be opened in Keynote.

  • How can I hear audio input effects?

I am plugging my electric guitar into a Quad-Capture and select a certain amp on in the insert strip but can't hear this effect. What am I doing wrong

Maybe wrong configuration of Hardware-/Software-Monitoring? Some audio interfaces feature hardware monitoring, meaning sound from the input is directly passed to it's output. If thats the case, disable HW-monitoring and enable software-monitoring in Logic Pro X in the audio settings.

  • Cannot hear audio on imported clips

    Hello All,
I have used iMovie HD to import DV (sony DVCAM format tape) using the camera (Sony PD-170) and a DV tape player/recorder. In both cases the audio is inaudible in iMovie. I have tried raising the audio level in the clip as well as extracting the audio and raising the level. No dice. I am able to get audio using Microsoft MovieMaker (sorry!). But, I prefer iMovie for editing.
When I play the tape on a tv monitor the audio is fine. the level is low, but turning up the volume on TV is fine, at least to hear the tape.
Any ideas on how to get the audio up in iMovie?
    eholz1

Your audio settings may have been changed.
    1. Open Audio MIDI Setup (/Applications/Utilities/), then check the Audio Output setting.
    2. Change the Audio Output setting to 44100.0 Hz.
    3. Quit Audio MIDI Setup.

  • Cannot hear audio of others in one specific group call

Hey all, a weird error's cropped up for me in a single group call. All other audio on my PC works fine (youtube, system sounds, even other skype calls like echo test and other friends), but in this call, everyone else can hear me, but I can't hear anything they say. Stuff I've tried already:Checking mic/speaker settings (they are correct)Reinstalling skypeRestarting PCSearching for fixes in older postsLeaving/being readded to the callGetting someone else to host the call I'm running the latest version of skype, and this error only appeared today, previously the call has worked fine. Any ideas?

Update: Tried changing the call host again, this time it worked.

  • Cannot hear audio when capturing video.

I'm an owner of a skate shop. I doing filming frequently, and just recently got my first Mac computer. I got FCE4 for capturing and editing my footage for a video that I'm working on. Just started using it today, have no idea how to get the audio to play WHILE I'm capturing the tape. It will play in the timeline after it's done capturing, but I'd like to be able to hear it (without plugging in headphones or speakers to the camera) while I'm capturing it. A friend told me it could possibly be an easy fix... any suggestions? Is it something as easy as checking or unchecking a box????

No easy fix as Tom relates.
Does your camera have a small built in speaker?
That will work if the volume is turned up.
