Cannot import AVCHD from Sony SR-7 into iMovie 09

Well - looks like I join the ranks. I can no longer import HD format movies from my Sony SR-7 into IMovie 09 since I upgraded to version 8.0.5. Does anyone know what happened? iMovie 09 worked beautifully until the upgrade. I can import SD and digital photos just fine. iMovie 09 (8.0.5) no longer "sees" the HD files on the camera. I'd really appreciate some help here.

Hi sblackatc - and welcome to Discussions!
I have the same camera which works perfectly with iMovie '09 version 8.0.5
iMovie '09 will not recognise HD (AVCHD) footage if you also have SD (MPEG-2) footage on the camera. You must erase all SD video from the camera, after archiving/importing it to your Mac. The camera will then be able to see your HD video. See this Apple article:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1793
If this is not the problem try this:
After connecting to your Mac via USB, open the LCD monitor on the camera. It should show a menu page labelled "USB Select". On this menu touch the item labelled "Computer" with the hard disk icon (not the memory stick icon). The camera will then show that it is connecting with the computer. Wait a while for iMovie to connect and generate the thumbnails for each clip. You should then be able to import and/or archive all clips on the camera.
Hope this helps!

  • I'm having a problem importing AVCHD from Sony HDR-SR1 (into FCP)

I've gone through all of the posts, on this site, but I can't seem to find a solution.
I have one of the new Intel based mac pro boxes
The files are in a .mt2s format and they are currently sitting on my hard disk.
    - I can't import from the camera, directly, because it doesn't support firewire
    - FCP and iMovie both grey out files, with this extension, when trying to import them (as does MPEG Streamclip)
    - The log and transfer utility also shows the files greyed out (and nothing happens if I try to drag and drop them onto the utility)
    any assistance would be appreciated
    Thanks in advance
    John

My understanding was that you have to maintain the directory structure from the AVCHD source. Is the HDR-SR1 a supported camera?

i cannot import photos from my camera card into light room 5 or photoshop

Launch Lightroom and from the menu go to:
Lightroom >> Preferences >> general (tab)
Ensure there is a checkmark in the box “show import dialog when a memory card is detected”
Then quit Lightroom and insert the card again. Does LR launch ready for import?
If not, check that your card is mounted. You should see an icon on the desktop.
Launch Lightroom and click the import button (bottom left)
Expand the tree in the left-hand column of the import dialog e.g. from Mac HD >> Users….down to desktop.
    Highlight your card.
Choose “Copy” at the top and either a named folder on the right or automatic dated folders.
    Then start the import.

I cannot import photos from my camera card into light room 5 or photoshop

There is no "into". LR and PS just reference your photos on the hard drive.
When you import your photos "into" the LR catalog, LR can copy the images off your memory cards to the hard drive if you have not already copied them, but the photos are referenced by the LR catalog by the path and filename for the files.
If you are having problems getting the images off the cards, what steps are you using and what error messages are you getting?

  • After Import AVCHD from Sony CX730, IMPOSSIBLE to put the video on the Timeline!!!!!

I have bought Premiere  three days ago. I am working on a AVCHD project, with clips from a Sony FS700 (1080 50p), and clips from a Sony CX730 (1080 25p). I can import the clips but for the CX730 clips it is impossible to put them on the timeline!!!!!
I can put the audio (5-1) on audio 4, but impossible to put the video... Everybody told me that Premiere support all the codec on the same project... It is not true!!!
    Why????

Yes! you are right, every thing work well now!! Thanks a lot!

  • How do I import AVCHD from my Panasonic Camara to iMovie '11?

How do I import AVCHD from my Panasonic Camara to iMovie '11?
I know i did it once and for the life of me I cannot remember how!  I do not remember getting any additional software...  i am pretty sure iMovie '11 can do it on it's own.  I have a Panasonic Camera that takes movies in AVCHD.
Looks like it is in a .MTS format.  HELP! Please...

    • connect device via usb
    • set to on/play
    • select in iM 'import from camera'

  • How to import AVCHD from Sony A7S to Premiere Pro CC 2014 on Windows 7

Hi, I'm a comparative newbie who just needs to edit some training videos shot on Sony A7S.
The adobe help documents suggest that PP CC 2014 can import .MTS files in AVCHD 25p format, but however I approach this it seems to come back with 'unsupported file' error.
I've tried importing direct from camera over wifi, downloading files to hard drive and then importing from there, downloading entire folders to hard drive and then importing from there... But nothing seems to work.
When I search online I get lots of seeming 'spam' about a variety of converters, is this what I am compelled to do?
I guess I'm getting something really simple wrong, I'd appreciate it if someone kind can tell me the error of my ways!

Thanks Neil, that's a great help.
    Just to clarify...
I'm currently accessing the camera through wifi, so it shows up in my windows explorer 'window' on the left hand side as an icon under 'Computer'.
When I double click that icon, I get a 'storage device' icon in the main window.
The recommended approach would be to drag and drop the entire contents of the storage device onto a folder on my hard drive - is that correctly understood?
Then I should access content through media browser window, NOT 'import' under file?

I am trying to import images into Elements Organizer from my Canon EOS 6D, but it doesn't work properly. I am expecting the images to appear in the Elements Organizer, but the images are only imported onto disk. At the moment I have to re-import images from the disk location as a second step. How can I perform this in one step, as I have seen this in the tutorials?
I am on a Mac using Yosemite using version 13 of Elements Organizer.

  • Importing miniDV from Sony DCR-TRV25 to iMovie '11?

Have an old Sony DCR-TRV25 miniDV that I have been struggling to import wedding video.  Currently have a MBP (early '08 I believe) with OSX 10.6.8, with iMovie '11 (9.0.4).  I'm using the FW, connecting with a 4p to 6p adapter (there looks to be a 9pin port also, but never tried a 4p to 9p adapter).  I have yet to get the camera to show up for import when connecting, and have tried other previous searches to "force" the import.  I've read that Final Cut Pro X may work, but being only an amateur I'd prefer to not spend that much on software for this older camera (have a newer Sony which works well with iMovie).  Anyone have any other suggestions that might work?  I'd like to be able to import quality video if possible (also read the quality was poor on some who seemed to get it imported from similar Sony lines before and they reverted to either iMovie HD6 or Final Cut versions).
Would love to be able to simply import myself, but if no solution seems available will just resort to farming it out locally to some business if I can find it.

    Hi
I've read that Final Cut Pro X may work, but being only an amateur I'd prefer to not spend that much on software for this older camera
If it doesn't work with iMovie - then the chance is low that it might work with FinalCut Pro.
    See my long list
    NO CAMERA or A/D-box
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing e.g. NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    External device’s (hard disk’s)
    • Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited. No Camera or A/D-box
    • GarageBands fix - Close iMovie, Open GarageBand, Play some notes, Close GB and iMove can now be OK
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref. file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    • Screen Saver - OFF
    • Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE   Mac OS Extended   formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odw_en_GB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

Earlier i imported some files from my sony videocamera and this was know problem. can anyone help me with this problem.
I'm new with Apple en iMovie!
    Greetings

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Several people have mentioned this and it seems to be a change with 10.6
If you're using Safari then right click on an image and choose 'Add Image to iPhoto Library'. Otherwise drag the image to the desktop first.

  • How to import AVCHD from Sony HDR-UX1

Ok, little frustrating getting this to work but here's how it worked for me.
First you will need ReadDVD! from http://www.softarch.com/press/readdvdIntel1.htm ($50)
This will allow your mac to mount the mini-dvd in your camera. The disk is formatted utf 2.5 as far as I understand and osx cannot mount this drive correctly.
Connect your camera and using finder copy the whole BDMV folder from the camera to an external drive (i'm just using a generic usb drive). Now disconnect your external drive.
Open up iMovie and then reconnect your external drive - the import wizard now pops up and you can bring your clips in.
Note : If you have perian installed - disable it or iMovie will crash.
I'm using the Sony HDR-UX1 camcorder on an Intel MacBook with an external usb drive (fat32 formatted)
I hope this helps others with this type of camera. I'm just a mac beginner so unfortunately I probably can't help much if you run into problems.

    Hi James,
Can you tell us some more about your computer's hardware?
    What is you processor,
    How much RAM,
    HDD size,
What type of graphics adapter and how much memory is allocated, and whether that memory is shared or dedicated?
Are you running any other Adobe programs, like Photoshop, After Effects, or Audition at the same time?
I know that the System Requirements do not list Windows Vista Home Basic, but that's not to say you can't get it to run, and run fine, but the combination of factors could choke your system, especially if you are scrubbing HD video.

Sony TRV22E - CAN ONLY export the VIDEO material via a FireWire Cable (iLinc)
    Then Your Mac need eiter
    - a FireWire port - or -
    - a Thunderbolt port
if only Thunderbolt - Then You need a FireWire to Thunderbolt converter.

Hi cape_surfers, and a warm welcome to the forums!
UPDATE1: About the MPEG-2 component included with iMovie ‘08
UPDATE2: After raising a stink, I figured that I’d spend a little more time trying to figure out how to make my Handycam work with native iMovie ‘08. Turns out that you have to turn on the camera, wait for OS X pick it up as a USB storage device, and then hang tight for three or four minutes until iMovie detects that your USB storage device is actually a camcorder, and presents the import dialog. I’m glad that I can import native MPEG-2, but am somewhat puzzled by the delay.
