Cannot Import Catalogs

I am posting this question as a last resort because Adobe technical support is a farce.  I have an open case on my new PSE & PE9 that I have yet to be able to use.  The only time I received any help was my first call, but after an hour of going back through everything I had already tried, I had to stop the call.  Since then I've been unable to get through, until tonight. Tonight I was placed on hold so the technician could consult with someone else.  I was disconnected.  I called back and was placed on hold for the same reason, and told it would be for only 4-5 minutes.  After an hour, it was past closing time and I was disconnected again.  This is simply outrageous.  I cannot find a number or address to lodge a complaint.  Is anyone in charge?  I am not a complete novice.  I've been using Photoshop Elements 4 and Premiere 2 since they came out.  I have installed version 9 on a new computer with a clean installation of Windows 7, because my old software was declared incompatible by Wiindows.
My problem is very basic.  I backed up my catalogs on my old computer using Photoshop Elements 4, to an external hard drive.  My files existed on my old computer on an "E" drive.  My new computer does not have an E drive.  When I try to resore the catalog from the external hard drive, it shows as successful, but there are no individual photos or slideshows or films, as they all point to a non-existent E drive.  I am amazed and depressed that Adobe did not consider this would be a common situation and provide for a means of pointing the program to a different drive where exactly the same folders exist in exactly the same structure. I would greatly appreciate comments from any user, but most especially from any Adobe employee who is monitoring this forum.
Thank you.

After posting my scorching but accurate assessment of Adobe technical support, I received several follow-up calls from them.  The upshot was I was advised that at best there was limited compatibility between version 4 and version 9 catalogs.  The E drive on my old XP computer is an internal drive.  The drive to which I backed up catalogs is an external drive, that I walked over to my new computer, and hooked up (USB connection).  I received more than one suggestion to install PSE9 on my old computer on the same drive as PSE4, import the catalogs, optimize them and repair them in PSE9, then back them up to my external drive.  I was then at least able to import the catalogs into PSE9 on my new computer, albeit with some limits.  There are still some slide shows that do not work.  Even though all the photos have been imported, none of them appear in the slide show - just black, blank squares.  It seems that having just one slide with pan and zoom enabled is the culprit.  The same slide show without pan and zoom on that one slide is functional.
In PRE9, I'm unable to render any .prel file that I created using PRE2.  However, I was able to install PRE2 on my new Windows 7 machine, so I have the option of completing editing on a clip in PRE2, then exporting it.
I can live with these limitations.  Too bad Adobe technical support wasted two hours of my time putting me on hold for the purpose of disconnecting me twice, thereby earning them a nasty review that will live on in the ethersphere.
Now, if they will just make PSE and PRE 9 more stable & give us some color / contrast options for the interface.  I'm going blind searching for controls on the medium grey on slightly darker grey on black user interface.

  • Cannot open catalog Error

I just downloaded Windows Embedded 8 Standard Toolkit. I ran Setup.exe and installed it on my Windows 7 64-bit computer. When I open ICE and click on "Create New Configuration File" and select the defaults of OS (x86) and 6.2.9200.16384 (OS Version)
then click "Create" I get an error:
Cannot open catalog: C:\Windows Embedded Catalog

The directory C:\Windows Embedded Catalog exists and I see x86 and the OS version under it.
I tried reinstalling and repairing but still get this message.

  • Lr cannot read Catalog .psa (Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.2)

    Hello,
I use Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.2 to manage my 12'000 photos (with tags) and I'll move to Lightroom. But I cannot import the catalog .psa into Lr2.3.
Lr can read only catalog .lrcat, .lrdb, and .aglib !
I renamed catalog .psa to catalog .aglib etc. but nothing happenend.
    My idea, I will :
    1. Install PSE 7,
    2. read catalog .psa (is it possible?)
    3. export into catalog .lrcat, .lrdb, or .aglib (is it possible?)
4.then  import with Lr with all the tags
Is there someting easyer to do ?
    My brain is boiling :-\
    Thank you
    Tennistin

PSE7 should be able to convert your catalog. I don't really know, as I haven't tried and haven't read about converting PSA Starter Edition catalogs, but I am optimistic.
The problem is that the current version of Lightroom will not read PSE7 catalogs. Probably when Lightroom 3 comes out, it will read PSE7 catalogs. So, I would search the Internet to see if the trial version of PSE6 or PSE5 is available somewhere for download. If you can find one of those versions, they will convert your PSA catalog as well. Lightroom definitely does convert PSE5 and PSE6 catalogs.

  • Upgraded to Lightroom 3.6, cannot import NEF files from D700

    Hi!
I just upgraded my Lightroom to 3.6 on my MacBook pro running Lion. Since then, I cannot import my pictures anymore, either from the camera directly, through a compact flash reader (SanDisk) or by adding the picture directly from my hard-drive. The standard Mac utility to download images work fine.
Lightroom tells me that it cannot read the files, with Lithgtroom 3.5 it worked (nothing changed in the meantime Camera profiles, OS X, etc.).
You can find one NEF file I cannot import here (dropbox link) : http://db.tt/6zSiNzYK
    Any idea?

    Thank you Sean,
I'll try that once I'll have managed to get the import working. I created another catalog since last time I thought the import worked but again I got stuck.
Do you know anything else I could try? Ideally, do you know how  I could get a better diagnosis? By the way, I already got in touch with the CS but all I got was a lousy answer (update my ACR... for Lightroom -_- )
I'm using Lightroom since the first version and I start to really be discouraged.
    Thanks for your help,

  • I cannot import any video into my  Lightroom 5.4 (last version updated) for MAC

I cannot import any video into my  Lightroom 5.4
    (last version updated) for MAC
in the beginnig it was  working, just after installation and update... now nomore...
    I use .mp4 files
Already tried to use a new catalog, clean caches, and reinstalling
the error says "was not able to import video files"
    thanks

Arghhh! A big thank-you to hhps-photo, you just solved the myth bothering me for the last 2 months!
I recently upgraded to Lightroom 5 from 4 and could not import any video. But when I downgrade to LR4 it worked again. I've tried so many other solutions suggested in the forum but none worked including cleaning cache, install divix plugin, install 32 bit version etc. Finally - it's because I blocked LR5 connecitons in my firewall !!!
So simply allowed LR5 internet connection in my firewall settings and LR5 worked like a charm!

  • LR 2.5 Windows Vista 32 bit cannot import and hangs the computer

Had three new folders that I was going to import into LR. When the first folder was being imported and was still rendering the 1:1 previews I started to import in the second folder. Folder one's photos imported fine but nothing was imported from folder two and LR stopped functioning and hung the PC. On rebooting, the catalog, including the first folder's contents are all there and I could do all my work with them but the moment I try  importing folder two or three I could only choose the files and thereafter will hang the program and PC. Tried copying the contents of folder two to another folder and the  same results. The photos inside folders two and three are viewable through Canon's Digital Professional software so they are still intact. I put some new photos into folder four and the same problem when I tried to import.
Any ideas or is my LR corrupted and need to be reinstalled?

I have reinstalled LR 2.5 and the problem is still there, I cannot import from a folder on the hard disk and also cannot import directly from a CF card connected through the USB port. The mouse still moves but LR is frozen and nothing can be selected with the mouse click. Will need to restart Windows. The strange thing is all other LR functions are not affected and as far as i could see, seems to be working like normal, only the import function is dead. What is the next course of action? Any suggestion from any one out there? Help!

  • LR cannot Import - Unknown Error

I am getting this error message when trying to import a catalog "Lightroom could not import because of Unknown Error".
The catalog I am attempting to import contains about 6000 images and was built by the beta during the Beta phase.  It opens fine by itself - as it worked throughout the beta.  I have no problems opening it and working on it directly with LR3.0.
However, since this was my catalog for just a couple of projects during the Beta, I now want to fold it into my main catalog of some 19,000 images.  My main catalog was my LR2.7 catalog and I have successfully converted it to LR3.0 - it opens fine and works fine.
Said in another way, while running 3.0, I can switch freely back-and-forth between these 2 catalogs using File | Open Recent
I am just unable to import the beta's converted catalog into it.  After doing File | Import from Catalog, LR asks for the name - I navigate to the xxx.lrcat file and select it.  The import starts and displays a Preparing to Import information window...perhaps for a second or two, then stops with the above message which is reported as a Warning .... however, the import stops at this point.
So, this is kind of serious......
Both catalogs are on the same drive, with plenty of free space.
What additional information do you require to resolve this ?
    jc

thanks for the input .... I had some duplicates in the beta catalog.  I
resolved them manually then removed them from the catalog and Optimized it.
I was then able to Import from Catalog without difficulty.

  • I cannot import photos from my camera card into light room 5 or photoshop

I cannot import photos from my camera card into light room 5 or photoshop

There is no "into". LR and PS just reference your photos on the hard drive.
When you import your photos "into" the LR catalog, LR can copy the images off your memory cards to the hard drive if you have not already copied them, but the photos are referenced by the LR catalog by the path and filename for the files.
If you are having problems getting the images off the cards, what steps are you using and what error messages are you getting?

  • Import catalog from CD or DVD

To keep catalogs manageable I remove folders from my main file and export them to a catalog. This I then burn to DVD. Lightroom cannot open this file because it is a removable disk which cannot write changes to. Please can you add in a feature to import or load catalog from DVD?

It should be able to import Catalog from DVD. It won't open a Catalog on Dvd, just like it won't on a network drive.

  • Reset the Previous Import catalog when using auto import

I'm using auto import with a watched folder to add scanned slides to a new catalog. Works fine. My question is about the Previous Import "catalog" that new imports are automatically added to. I had thought that this catalog would be reset after each session (i.e. after closing and restarting LR), but it never resets and still shows every slide that I've automatically imported over the last couple of weeks. Is there any way to clear or reset this?
    I'm using LR3.3

Unfortunately, the Previous Import count cannot be reset without deleting the previous import from the catalog. Silly? Yes!
Also, Previous Import only records the number of files imported during the last import (i.e. via import window, auto import or import from catalog), not the total number of images previously imported. So, I'm not sure why you're getting your total shows the sum of all previous imports.

  • Lightroom crashes, won't import catalog

I added a couple of pictures to a collection via "drag and drop". I selected one and opened the Develop window and got a message something like "unexpected error". I exited Lightroom and restarted. While Lightroom is initializing and has drawn all the windows I get the Microsoft Dialog "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom has encountered a problem". Dismissing that I get a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library error "The exception unknown software error (0x0000015) occurred in the application at location 0x605dabf6. Click OK to terminate the program. Then I get a dialog Program E:\Prog... R6025 - Pure virtual function call". When I click OK Lightroom goes away.
I restarted and held down the CTRL key. I then let Lightroom test the integrity of the database. That finished successfully, but Lightroom then crashed the same as above.
I then restarted and held down the CTRL key again. I created a new catalog and Lightroom came up correctly. I then tried to import the old catalog. I get a Warning dialog "Cannot import from this catalog at this time. The catalog is either in use by another copy of Lightroom or was closed improperly. If it was closed improperly, please consider doing an integrity check when opening".
There's no other copy of Lightroom running. I rebooted. I did the integrity check and it seemed to pass. So I'm stuck at my end. I'd rather not lose the whole day's work if I could avoid it. I do have a backup from yesterday, but I'm hoping there's another solution.

Lacking any other alternative, I tried to restart Lightroom the next morning with the intent of looking for other options, and it opened without complaint and all was well.
I'm glad it worked, but it doesn't make me feel real comfortable about the program.

I am trying to move my itunes library from my old pc to my new imac, home sharing is on and I can see the shared library.  My problem is that when I check the shared library to import it to my imac I cannot import it.  Can anyone help me?

You need to transfer the iTunes Library from the most recent backup you made before the hard drive was replaced.
You can't transfer the full iTunes Library from the iPad back to iTunes.
There are third-party Windows applications that will transfer data from an iOS device, but they don't re-create the iTunes Library exactly as it was before.

  • Can I import catalog photos from a usb drive?

I have imported photos from a catalog into a new catalog.  Some of the photos in the catalog are located on a remote drive.   The drive is not listed when I select the photos to be imported.  Is it possible to import catalog photos from a usb drive?
    Howie

    Hi Keith,
"Import from another catalog" is a selection found in the Lightroom "File" drop down listing. Sorry I wasn't clear in my reguest.   I have used this function to import photos in to my new Catalog from my old Catalog.  During the import process,  Lightroom creates a working catalog from which photos can be selected.     A file list on the left side of the window displays the available hard drive folders.   Once the photos to be extracted are selected the source folder is checked.  The import button, on the bottom right of the window, is highlited to execute the import function.  Since the external USB hard drive is not listed,  the import function is not available.
My question:  how do I enable the import from my USB drive? Perhaps I will have to move the files back onto my internal hard drive using my Lightroom's old catalog.

I cannot import my vCard to iCloud...it shows error.."1 contact could not be imported because there was a problem reading the vCard"

The vCard must not be a compatible format.  (Unfortunately, there are multiple formats.)
Often your carrier can transfer contacts between devices from different manufacturers.  Try visiting your carrier's retail outlet and see if they can do this for you.

  • I have upgraded to Mavericks and I now cannot import DV into FCP through the capture presets.

Since upgrading to Mavericks, I cannot import DV vision through my Sony FX-1E. I have tried various connections - DV to Firewire 400 + 800 with no success. I now have to get the vision ingested at another facility and exported to a hard drive in order to edit.
Is there a way I can get vision into FCP?

FCP (not FCPX) is legacy software, now EOL and not designed or guaranteed to work with Mavericks, some people report no problems others do, it depends on your setup. I'd suggest using iMovie to capture your footage then transfer to FCP to save using (or paying) another facility. An alternative (and my own solution) is a second boot drive with 10.8.5 and FCP 7 which still works OK.
