Hi, our system was working until 3 days ago. We cannot import .mp4 movies now? Please help!

Can you open it in the QT player? What are the complete specs of the media as they appear in the inspector? Where is the media you're trying to import? What exactly are you doing when you import and what happens when you do it?

Cannot import .mp4 files in iMovie HD

I have a file which was ripped from a DVD using HandBrake, that was converted to .mp4, which I cannot import into iMovie HD 6. It starts to import it...takes about 30 minutes to import a 20 minute video, and then at the last minute says "Error Importing".
Does anyone have any ideas on what to do?

.mov is just a container, some say "wrapper"… should be a "dv" file… or a mov with a dv inside, to be precise…
avi is a NoGo, that is a PC container, you never know what's inside (iM is no all-purpose editor, it is meant for miniDV)

is your iM project located on ext. drive?
then you've reached the "famous" 19min barrier of wrong formatted drives!
launch Disk Utility from your Utility Folder
select ext. drive
look under format… my guess: FAT32… right?
should be "MacOsExtended/hfs(+)"…
ext. drives have to be formatted that way for video projects.... formatting erases all content on drive, make sure, you've backupped all content…

Cannot import mp4 files to iMovie anymore

A few weeks ago I was able to import mp4 files to iMovie. I've encoded the files with Handbrake first.
But now, I've downloaded a mp4 file (and then to be sure encoded this one too) but can't import it in iMovie.
How is this possible? They are all in the same mp4 format, but my last one doesn't work. It won't even play in Quicktime..
In the image below, you can see that the upper file can't be selected while trying to import it into iMovie.

Imported MP4 clip from my HD will not thumbnail

I created a new project then imported an MP4 clip from my HD as a new event but it does not thumbnail. When the event is selected the event window says "video not found" The same clip playsjust fine on Quicktime. I tried closing iMovie and reopening to no avail. I also tried deleting and reimporting. It still says video not found and I cannot drag the event into the project window.

I have the same camera, and I have imported mp4 videos at 30p successfully into iMovie 9.09.
However, I'm running Mavericks (10.9.1), and I pull the SDHC card from the camera and plug it into the slot in the back of the Mac. I'm now moving to iMovie 10 which while it has its problems and editing is not very intutitive, is much faster at importing from the camera and exporting the edited movie. I use mChapters from the App Store to add chapters to the exported movie (after changing the exported file suffix from mp4 to m4v in the Finder). So for my purposes, I can pretty much use iMovie 10 for the same applications as I did with 9.09.
As suggested earlier on this Thread, upgrading to Mavericks and at least iMovie 9.09 will likely allow you to use your camera as you wish. iMoive 10 will give you expanded options with the camera.

Arghhh! A big thank-you to hhps-photo, you just solved the myth bothering me for the last 2 months!
I recently upgraded to Lightroom 5 from 4 and could not import any video. But when I downgrade to LR4 it worked again. I've tried so many other solutions suggested in the forum but none worked including cleaning cache, install divix plugin, install 32 bit version etc. Finally - it's because I blocked LR5 connecitons in my firewall !!!
So simply allowed LR5 internet connection in my firewall settings and LR5 worked like a charm!

C++ Exception and restart upon importing .mp4 videos

I've exported an .mp4 video from After Effects into Edge Animate. But upon import I get a C++ exception error and a request to restart. The .mp4 video does not import. What's the issue? At this point, I cannot import videos into edge Animate

ITunes will not import mp4-files.

For some reason iTune will not import mp4-files into iTunes. The files only contain audio, no video. I know that mp4 is a format that combines the two.
The files were generated in an earlier version of iTunes, like in 2006 or something. They were imported from CD's. I can locate them just fine on my computer and they play without problem in Windows Media Player.
The problem is that when I try to import them the way that iTunes want me to import files its like they don't exist. ITunes locates the folders and sub-folders, but its like there's no content in the folders...
I've tried changing my import settings but nothing seems to help...
Have any of you encountered a similar problem, could you fix it and how?
I've contacted Apple-support but they were unable (incompetent) to assist me...
To me it seems like the only option left is to convert all the files, like 2 GB, from mp4 to mp3.
Thankful for any help I could get solving this ***** of an issue...

iTunes can handle just about any file format that works with QuickTime and will play any file purchased or downloaded from the iTunes Store. If you've got video files that end with a .mov, .m4v, or .mp4 file extension, you can import them to iTunes with ease. However, the video especially the MP4 video must meet the following specifications: it must be encoded as 540 kbit/s (minimum) MPEG-4 video (H.264) with an approximately 128 kbit/s AAC audio track or encoded as 1.5 Mbit/s (minimum) MPEG-4 video (H.264) with a minimum 128 kbit/s AAC audio track. If not, you will fail to import MP4 to iTunes.
Even if your MP4 files meet the above specifications and are added to iTunes successfully, it may still fail to sync to iOS devices. For iPhones, iPads, and video-capable iPods play videos in more specific video formats and codecs.

Cannot import video from Canon Powershot G9

We just bought a Canon Powershot G9 and have had no trouble importing photos taken on it into our iPhoto (7.1.3). But we cannot import the video taken on the camera at all: every time we try iPhoto crashes and shuts as it starts the import process. We've saved the .avi files to a folder but even when playing them in VLC we get sound but no video. We're using iMac with OS 10.4.11.
Can anyone help in how to get the video from the G9 into iPhoto? We've also tried the Canon software and iMovie but neither worked.

I didn't move the file to the desktop because mp4s from my camera are imported by default to iphoto. Recently though, they have been corrupted or just not appearing at all in iphoto or anywhere else.
But I thought about it for a while and wondered if I could import them to (yes, you've guessed it) imovie HD!
I've gone for months looking everywhere for a solution to my problem, but not only was there no help in my mac, neither was the web any use. Consequently, I lost loads of precious little movies, (grandchildren, etc.) thinking the files were corrupt and not worth keeping.
You've obviously realised that I am not a computer geek, but thanks to 'lack of simple knowledge' being available on the net; thanks to you (indirectly) I managed to solve my problem.
I can't help wondering why on earth Apple doesn't admit that iphoto will 'baulk at importing anything that's too big', and simply suggest that newbies to Macs should import movies to imovie.

How to import MP4 into iMovie09

You will need to convert it to something that iMovie can edit.
1) The first step is to see if QuickTime can play it. See if you can open it in QuickTime Player.
If you can, Proceed to Step 3
2) If QuickTime cannot play it, I would try to download a set of open source codecs called Perian. They will handle many odd codecs like this. Go to Perian.ORG and download them. Then go back to step 1.
Note: If Perian does not work for you, come back for some more ideas.
3) Once QuickTime can play it, you need to convert it to something iMovie can edit. If you have QuickTime Pro, use that. If you would prefer a free alternative, download MPEG STREAMCLIP from Squared 5. Drag the 3G2 clip into MPEG Streamclip and then FILE/Export to QuickTIme...
Choose Apple Intermediate Codec (for highest quality) or choose h.264 (for smallest file size) and save it in a place you can find it.
4) Now open iMovie, and use FILE/IMPORT...MOVIES to import the converted file into iMovie for editing.

Cannot import specific MOV file into iMovie. HELP please!

I have been using iMovie for many years and am not a novice.
For some reason, I have a specific MOV file that I cannot import into iMovie 10.0.5. When I try to import the file, I get an error message:
"No Importable Files: None of the selected files or folders can be imported"
The file is NOT corrupt and plays perfectly in QuickTime. Interestingly, when I try to import the movie in iMovie, it shows 0.0 sec duration, even though it load/plays perfectly in iMovie with a duration of 54:45. See file A1 below:
I even tried converting the file to M4V in Quicktime, but iMovie would still not import the new M4V file.
Any suggestions? This is an important Movie, I cannot re-record it, and I need to edit it in iMovie.

Final Cut Pro 7 Import Mp4 File Problem

Help! I have been using FCP 7 for some time now and all of a sudden I cannot import an Mp4 file. I get a file error saying the FCP does not recognize the file? I have been importing and using Mp4 files all along. I can't find any setting in FCP that would address this problem?

FCP doesn't work with MP4 (or H.264) files natively. Sometimes they work, but it wasn't designed to do so. For a list of the formats that FCP does work with natively, look at the Easy Setup list. Create your Sequence using one of those then convert the MP4 file to to match that prior to importing it into your FCP project.

Importing MP4 into Final Cut

Hello. I have a MP4 video file i need to import into Final Cut Pro 5.0.1, and I am getting a cannot import error. What are my options here. Do I need to update to a newer version of Final Cut. I am trying to get the best possible quality as possible.

The trick may be to save it as an .mov,
but make sure you set a good codec!
Try uncompressed, or animation codec if you really want the best quality,
or save it as an .mov with the pre-res codec.
If you are inter-cutting with some other footage you could always convert it to that codec,
but it would be better to go with uncompressed as it will inevitably need color grading as web based stuff, or MP4 colors can slide; and wild footage certainly needs some color guidance.
Use compressor to convert it, or just open the MP4 in quicktime, and do a save as, and choose the codec under the video options.
Or do use MPEG Streamclip (as suggested) to convert it to an .mov with a good codec as this program is really good for those difficult Mpegs.

Cannot import movie

Updated itunes on my Mac Pro 3.1 and I cannot add (import) any MP4 movies into itunes 11
Previous I was able to drag and drop. Now I cannot drag and drop nor use the menu to import the file.
All movies have been run through Handbrake with Apple TV 3 preset.
What did Apple do to the new update that itunes will NOT import my movies
Songs will import via the menu but will NOT drag and drop.

I have also found out that I can drag and drop a movie that was converted from AVI to MP4 but cannot import an MKV file that was converted to MP4

You need to transfer the iTunes Library from the most recent backup you made before the hard drive was replaced.
You can't transfer the full iTunes Library from the iPad back to iTunes.
There are third-party Windows applications that will transfer data from an iOS device, but they don't re-create the iTunes Library exactly as it was before.

The vCard must not be a compatible format. (Unfortunately, there are multiple formats.)
Often your carrier can transfer contacts between devices from different manufacturers. Try visiting your carrier's retail outlet and see if they can do this for you.
