Cannot import *some* mp4

I am trying to import an mp4 video, but am receiving an error message "The importer reported a generic error". I can import this videos into other software (e.g. VLC) and I can import other .mp4s into Adobe, so it seems to be a specific video + Adobe problem. I came across a potential solution regarding the codec and I can get some info about the codec from VLC, but I don't know how to use it or if that will fix my importing problem.
Any suggestions or ideas are very welcome.

MP4 is a wrapper, what is inside YOUR wrapper - Exactly what is INSIDE the video you are editing?

  • Cannot import an MP4 file?

Hi, I am trying to import an MP4 file into FCP. The file has been ripped from a dvd using handbrake. I have written copyright authorisation from the client (who owns the dvd), to do this as they want to to take 3 chapters from their dvd and encode it for web use.
Two of the chapters came in without issue, but the 3rd one will not import.
FCP error message says. File error, 1 file recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown.
Any ideas whats wrong. I have tried it several times using handbrake to no avail.

Thanks chaps you have all been very helpful with your advice. I must admit the only reason i chose to use handbrake was that is was the route recommended by an apple trainer! so I took it as red that handbrake was the tool. Following on from your advice, can I identify a chapter from within the vob list, only I have to find 3, 1 minute clips in a 4hr dual disk of 43 chapters. I only know that what I want is in chapters 23, 29 and 30. Can i somehow point streamclip to the specific file or is this not possible?
Lastly I know that the footage format is down as 1024 x 576 strict. In streamclip I cannot see this aspect ratio. Is it best to bring in in as DV Pal anamorphic or set a custom size of 1024 x 576?
    Thanks again.
    Thanks

  • Cannot import some pictures: reported as corrupted

I receive family pictures from my brother. He uses Photoshop. Some JPEG pictures are reported to be "corrupted" and won't import to iPhoto 08, most will. If I put them through my Photoshop Elements and make them PNG, twice the size, but then they will import.
Why can't iPhoto 'read' the pictures, yet Preview and Photoshop Elements 4 can? I'd sure like to use iPhoto, heck... it's kind of nifty. But at this rate, it's getting a bit annoying with having to rebuild the database thumbnails (black thumbnails) all of the time.
Primarily, the issue is not being able to import some JPEGs, however.

    ringhome
Just try opening the files in Preview and then saving them as jpeg - then try import. This issue can arise because PS sometimes adds metadata that iPhoto can' deal with.
The Black thumbnails can be caused by importing greyscale images - iPhoto supports RGB only. If that's not the issue and the problem is persistent then check your HD for minor errors using Disk Utility.

  • Cannot Import some iTunes into FCE - not a standard file?

Trying to import some music into FCE from iTunes.
Browsing window only will highlight certain music as "standard files" and only import those songs. Others are"greyed out" and when I switched the files list to "all files" and try to import then I get error message "1 files recognized 0 files access denied 1 unknown"

Ahhhhhhh! It's starting to make sense now. If the CD was properly formatted as an "Audio CD", the tracks should be recorded at 44.1khz. You can use QuickTime Pro, iTunes, SoundTrack Pro (any several other apps) to convert the tracks from the CD to AIF, 48khz, 16 bit Stereo.
If you use iTunes to do it, make sure you set the encoder to AIF (with the proper settings) in iTunes preferences before you begin.
Note that AIF and AIFF are the same - you may see it listed either way, depending on the app.

  • Cannot import some CD artwork to iTunes even though all steps are followed correctly

I can't seem to import some CD artwork into I tunes.  I can drag the artwork into the artwork box when using "get info" but when I click OK, the artwork disappears.  When I try to drag or paste the image to the artwork box on the lower left, the image appears for less than a second and disappears.
Don't know what else to do.

can't help, just wanted to add my voice for this problem...
tried several times to add artwork in "Get Info" box where the add artwork option is available...add picture from my pictures folder and it shows up when song is playing, but after I switch to another song then back to the song I just added the artwork to, the artwork that has just been added a few minutes before has disappeared!
hope someone has an answer to this disappearing act...or has Criss Angel been hired by Apple to run iTunes development? lol

  • ITunes will not import some .mp4 content, metadata problem?

I have been importing movies and TV shows for years into iTunes so that my disabled son can watch them on his AppleTV but lately I have been having a problem getting some to go into iTunes.  This batch is part of season 9 and 10 of Smallville.  I imported about half of the two seasons no problem but the other half will not import.  I have ripped all my movies and TV episodes off of disks that I own using Handbreak and WinX DVD Ripper for Mac and it has worked just fine for over 1050 movies and 6200 TV episodes and I was able to import all of season 9 and 10 of Smallville into my laptop's iTunes no problem but on my son's iMac no luck.  Both computers are running Mac OS 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.6.1(7) and all content is on two 3TB external hard drives.  That is two external drives for the laptop and two for the iMac.  After burning, content on one external drive is copied to the other computer's external drive and imported to iTunes on that computer. This way I have a backup copy of all my iTunes video content and two completely independent iTunes and AppleTV's.  But on my son's computer 16 episodes will not go in.  I "command O" like normal but no import bar is noted and no content can be found.  I believe that this problem is due to metadata content.  I am also have a little trouble getting some TV content to switch from Music or Movie Media Kind to TV Media Kind and I know that this is a metadata problem.  Also some of the episodes have been in iTunes before either from the Apple Store or ripped and then deleted for one reason or the other.  I therefore believe that there is a file in iTunes that is telling the program that the episodes I now want to import are already in iTunes and therefore should not go in twice.  I have tried changing the episode names and importing, no luck and I even edited an episode using MPEG Streamclip, removing some content, and then resaving it under another name, no luck either.  Any ideas would be helpful.  I know the Media Kind problem has been address before but now I cannot find it so a link to that discussion would also be helpful.  Thank you for any help.

I have the same issue here. My daughter has an iPod Touch4 and I have been importing mp4's with no problems up until the last iTunes update. Now I get nothing. No message, not activity, nothing. Either this is a new bug in iTunes or they have now eliminated the import ability.
I am sick and tired of apple and their hand-holding, big-brother coddling. My daughters iPod is the last Apple product we have and now I think it's time to totally part ways with Apple and go all in with Android. We have already converted all our phones from Apple to Android. The Samsung Galaxy Player looks like a great replacement to the iPod.

  • Cannot import videos mp4/m4v in iTunes for Windows 7.

I've been trying for days to import a few mp4 and m4v videos to my iTunes on a pc running Windows 7.
I have the latest iTunes and the latest Quicktime installed. When I try to import theses videos, I get nothing and they do not appear in my library.
I tried uninstalling iTunes and Quicktime and reinstalling them. I've searched the forums, and couldn't find anything similar to this.
I played the same videos on 2 other computers  (On my MB Pro running OSX Lion and on a friends computer running Windows Vista) both running the latest iTunes and Quicktime and all the videos imported and played flawlessly.
I'm out of ideas here...Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: Also, when I try to play theses videos through Quicktime, I get an error -50 (Unknown error). But not on the other machines.

The first thing I would try is Missing Artist or Album not with others by same artist. I've also seen reports of people compaining that the Music section of iTunes doesn't list all their content. For some reason adding a new track such as the current iTunes Single of the Week is proposed, and even confirmed, as a solution, though to be honest I can't see why it would make any difference.
If you make a smart playlist that should match your recent addition does it show up in that?

  • Cannot import some of my pictures (import failed, contains no valid data)

I have about 100 photos on my Blackberry Curve 8300 which I tried to import into iPhoto 08 (7.1.3) today.
It imported 18 and could not import the rest. The first error message was something like file contains invalid data or no valid data. After I restarted iPhoto I got a message that there were 70-something pictures in the library which were not imported, and I said yes to import them. This time they failed simply with "import failed" error message.
I can see those image files on my HD under Pictures/iPhoto Library. The funny thing is that as I was trying to troubleshoot I realized that there was a folder Oct 10, 2007 and another one Oct 10, 2007_2. There were some pictures in common and some not. The ones that were not in _2 folder seemed to be the ones that failed to import. This folder of course is just an example, there are other similar _2 folders.
I even tried importing them from the HD by copying/pasting them from the Blackberry/Pictures folder to my Desktop. Still no go.
Also, when I connected the Blackberry using USB, iPhoto and Image Capture did not recognize it as a camera. I had to open iPhoto and go to File/Import to Library. FYI.

Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
    Start iPhoto. Does that help?
As to the photos that would not import... will they open with Preview?

There is no folder called 'import' or 'importing' in that location. There is an Auto Import folder with nothing in it.
Yes, I can see them with Preview in Finder.

  • Cannot import .mp4 files in iMovie HD

I have a file which was ripped from a DVD using HandBrake, that was converted to .mp4, which I cannot import into iMovie HD 6. It starts to import it...takes about 30 minutes to import a 20 minute video, and then at the last minute says "Error Importing".
Does anyone have any ideas on what to do?
    Thanks,
    Ryan

.mov is just a container, some say "wrapper"… should be a "dv" file… or a mov with a dv inside, to be precise…
avi is a NoGo, that is a PC container, you never know what's inside (iM is no all-purpose editor, it is meant for miniDV)
    ahhh! <bulb over head>
is your iM project located on ext. drive?
then you've reached the "famous" 19min barrier of wrong formatted drives!
launch Disk Utility from your Utility Folder
    select ext. drive
look under format… my guess: FAT32… right?
    should be "MacOsExtended/hfs(+)"…
ext. drives have to be formatted that way for video projects.... formatting erases all content on drive, make sure, you've backupped all content…

  • Cannot import mp4

Hi, our system was working until 3 days ago. We cannot import .mp4 movies now? Please help!

Can you open it in the QT player? What are the complete specs of the media as they appear in the inspector? Where is the media you're trying to import? What exactly are you doing when you import and what happens when you do it?

  • Cannot import specific MOV file into iMovie. HELP please!

I have been using iMovie for many years and am not a novice.
For some reason, I have a specific MOV file that I cannot import into iMovie 10.0.5.  When I try to import the file, I get an error message:
"No Importable Files: None of the selected files or folders can be imported"
The file is NOT corrupt and plays perfectly in QuickTime. Interestingly, when I try to import the movie in iMovie, it shows 0.0 sec duration, even though it load/plays perfectly in iMovie with a duration of 54:45.  See file A1 below:
I even tried converting the file to M4V in Quicktime, but iMovie would still not import the new M4V file.
Any suggestions?  This is an important Movie, I cannot re-record it, and I need to edit it in iMovie.
    Thanks in advance!

I copied it below.  I would appreciate any suggestions!

  • Premiere has suddenly stopped importing avi/mp4 files

I am using Premiere Pro CS3 on a mac.
With no explanation, Premiere has decided it can't recognize files that it recognized fine a few weeks ago. I have projects that I've already finished and when I reopen them it says the media is offline. When I attempt to import .avi files I get either a "codec missing" message or an "unsupported compression in file" while an .mp4 gets me "unsupported format or damaged file"
while I have "fixed" the mp4 issue by changing the file extension to .mpg, I still cannot import any .avi files, which didn't use to be a problem. Also I didn't have to change the file extension on .mp4 files before, either.
I am extremely frustrated and have no idea why nothing works except using another program to turn the .avi files into DV format, which for some insane reason makes a 20 minute video 3.95 GB, which makes me think somehow I'm doing that wrong too.

    >That seems ridiculous
No, that would be trying to edit a delivery format
You are an artist - You paint on a canvas
It is a FLAT canvas where you may see and paint everything
That is similar to Premiere with a DV AVI type 2 file... it may see and paint (edit) everything
    1-Now, read here to see
Why NOT to try and edit an MPEG
Your canvas is now "fan folded" like the expanding part of an accordian You may now only see the edges of the folds - You may NOT see inside the folds You are now trying to paint a full picture based only on being able to see those edges
That is similar to Premiere with any variety of SD (StandardDef) file compressed into an MPEG (HD "HiDef" is different, with it's own set of issues and problems)
Do not be fooled by movie industry advertising into thinking that "DVD Quality Video" is suitable for EDITING... it is not... a DVD is for PLAYBACK only!

  • I have a an iMac 27" and am trying to import some videos of a friends wedding into iMovie however one of the movies won't import. It doesn't say why or give any error message or codes. All of the other movies on the card download with out a problem.

I have an iMac 27" and am trying to import some videos of a friends wedding into iMovie however one of the movies won't import. It doesn't say why or give any error message or codes.
All of the other movies on the card download with out a problem. The movie in question is not 'corrupt' as you can watch it in iMovie direct from the SD card but as soon as you try to import it, it  just says 'error'. iIve tried moving the file to an external drive ( and other variations on this theme) then importing but have had no luck.
    Can anyone please help me.

    The mystery remains....
Thanks for the pointers. The file type is .mts (a proprietry sony one).
I have now found some video converter software (Wondershare and iSkysoft) at a cost. Either will convert this file for me into .mp4. This I can then import into iMovie without any problems. I've checked this on the trial versions and it worked well but without paying am left with a giant watermark in the video
The mystery (which I still havent solved) is why did 20 other .mts files import fine and then this one not?
If you could point me in the direction of some free .mts converter software that would be the cherry on the cake.
    Thanks
