Cannot increase partition size

I originally had three two partitions one called BOOT and one called FILES. I ran out of room on my boot drive and I was told to clone it, add a partition with a larger size and clone it back to the larger parttion. I crteated BOOT 2 and then once cloned back I deleted BOOT.
Now I cannot increase the size of FILES to its original size and cannot seem to recover any of the space from the original BOOT parttiion. Neither BOOT 2 or FILES can be increased. How do I acheive this?
Here is a screen capture of what is going on.......

You can not do that with Disk Utility. While it can be used to create and resize partitions, it can not be used to regain the space between partitions if there is data on the second partition.
You might try something like > iPartition for Mac - Smart hard disk partitioning utility.
But personally if I were in that boat. I would Clone the data from the 2nd and 3rd Partitions to partitions on an external drive. Then start over by reformatting the internal drive into 1 or 2 new partitions using Disk Utility and then clone the partitions back onto the internal drive.
In addition: In OS X it is not necessary to have a boot partition and a file partition, OS X does quite well at managing everything including quite large user libraries in one partition.

  • Growfs: cannot get partition size

    Hi,
I am running Sunos v5.9 and am trying to extend a soft partition from 30gb to 44gb. The slice of disk it is on does not appear to be mirrored and is labelled d2. I ran metattach d2 10g and this completed ok but when I ran the growfs, I got the above error. I have read countless reports of having to use the raw device name and I am doing so, but to no avail. I am running:-
    growfs -M /u04 /dev/md/dsk/d2 and get:-
devinfo: /dev/md/dsk/d2: Inappropriate ioctl for device
    growfs: cannot get partition size
Can anyone point out what I am doing wrong please?
    regards

  • Cannot change partition size on firewire external drive

My external firewire drive has three partitions, one of which is used for Time Machine and is out of space; the third one is empty. When I use Disk Utility to try to increase the size of the second partition without erasing its contents, I get the message: "Partition failed with the error: filesystem resize support required, such as HFS+ with journaling enabled".
Can someone please advise me on how to proceed.

How have you formatted your drive?
My drive is formatted as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) and I have not trouble resizing my partitions with disk utility. I remember reading somewhere that certain formats do not support on-the-fly resizing. If you are using one of those formats (which I would guess based on your error message), you may need to re-format your drive. This would mean erasing everything (so make sure you back up your drive first). If you do have it formatted in the same way as me, I am not sure why you are getting the error.

  • Increasing partition size for windows

can i increase the size of my windows partition with bootcamp?
i installed windows at first just so that i can use some of the program and files that runs on windows. And i thought since i was going to format that partition in the FAT way then i can access files on OS X. But after the installation of windows i realize that i'd have to go to OS X and drag that file into the windows partition and then restart in windows to use them. And now it's too late (or not if you guys tell me that i can increase its size) because i've only gave the windows partition 5 GBs of capacity and after installation only 1.7 GBs is left free. What if i want to watch a movie i downloaded that is 2 GB in size? i can't possibly drag that into my windows partition after i downloaded it with OS X because it will be too big for it. What can i do now?

I believe you have to go back to the original mac partition and start from there. Just like it was a new set up of boot camp.

  • Increase partition size

I have a small partition that I need to increase... I have looked all over for the .hdd file that I'm supposed to have in Boot Camp so I can run Parallels Image Tool, but I can't find it or anything close. Can this be done? What am I missing?
    Thanks
    Ritchie

    To increase the windows partition:
Converting FAT32 to NTFS while booted into Windows:
    1. Click on Start button
    2. Click on Run
    3. Type in Cmd and then it Enter
4.In the command prompt window, type: convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs and hit Enter. Please note that the "drive_letter" in the above command should be replaced with your drive letter. This is more than likely C so your command would read as Convert C: /fs:ntfs. NOTE: once you convert the partition to NTFS from FAT32 then OS X will not be able to write to it however it will be able to read it.
    5. Once the partition is converted then shut down windows and boot into OS X.
    Backing up windows partition:
    6. Download and run an app called "Winclone" from OS X and back up the newly converted Windows boot camp NTFS partition to another drive (maybe external USB or firewire drive)
    Create new partition size:
    7. Run Boot Camp Assistant from OS X and delete current Windows partition.
    8. Run Boot camp assistant again and recreate a new Windows partition with the increased size that you want. NOTE: Do not go through the process of installing windows from the boot camp assistant menu.
Reinstall windows backup clone onto new larger partition:
    9. Close boot camp assistant and run Winclone
    10. Using Winclone, unarchive your windows backup to the newly made larger NTFS partition that you just created with boot camp assistant.
OPTIONAL: to allow access to the newly converted NTFS XP file partition while in OS X
    11. download and install on the OS X partition NTFS 3G app http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/

  • Cant increase partition size

Recently I partitioned my drive so I could transfer files from my mac partition to my bootcamp partition (I had 3 partitions total). I had some problems with that partition so I deleted it using disk utility (I ended up with 2 partitions and free space, see picture). Next I tried increasing my mac partition and when i click apply, the progress bar shows as if it is working but when its done, it reverts back to the previous state with no error messages. Please help.
Click here to see the problem in a video.

Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the MacintoshHD partition to a external GUID OS X Ext J formatted blank powered drive.
Use WinClone 3 to clone the BootCamp partition to another drive.
Boot from the 10.6 install disk, Internet Recovery (command option r held at boot) or option/alt from the clone drive (easiest) and reformat the whole drive as you need.
If it's a hard drive, you should take this opportunity to Zero Erase, (move slider one spot to the right) in Disk Utility to map off any failing sectors in advance, takes some time but it's worth it later.
Then option/alt boot from the clone and reverse clone (also restores RecoveryHD) and then use BootCamp Utility to setup BootCamp partition anew, then use WinClone 3 to reverse clone Windows back on.

  • How do you create a disk image of windows so u can increase partition size?

Ok, I have installed windows on my mac using bootcamp so i can play pc games and such. I mainly use the mac side of the computer but I have 30 GB devoted to windows. I ran out of space though and now want to uninstall windows so i can make the windows partition bigger. The problem is that I don't want to have to install ALL of my programs over again once i reinstall windows so I want to take a disk image of windows which i can revert to once it is reinstalled. I tried using the disk utility to do it but it keeps giving me error messages. Does anyone know how do create a disk image using windows??? or maybe I'm doing something wrong with the disk utility??? HELP!

The easiest way I have found to do this is to backup the windows partition with a program such as WinClone
    http://twocanoes.com/winclone/
Then use the bootcamp assistant to erase and recreate the partition, finally restoring the backup to the new partition. I have done this several times with my mac and it works great.

  • Cannot choose partition size

When I get to the first screen after the "print instructions" screen, the options for the Mac partition and Windows partition read "-2147483648 GB" instead of the actual amounts.
I am on a late 2007 MacBook and had to manually install the Boot Camp Assistant package, but other than that nothing out of the ordinary with my computer. I even ran a disk verification on the disk utility to make sure everything is cool, and the verify came up OK.
    Any ideas?

You'll need to boot from the Install disk to do this via Disk Utility. Doing so will wipe out all the data on your HD however. There is a third party solution called iPartition that reformatting is not necessary, but I will still do a full backup just in case.

  • Increasing partition size for Windows 7 Ultimate in a clean install

I am running XP on a 32GB partition through bootcamp. I'm using OS 10.5.8 for my MacPro.
I wanted to do a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate (upgrade) in a larger partition than before, probably a new one.
I have about 400GB of available space for this and wanted to know if it was possible before starting out. I ran out of space with 32GB for XP and figure a good 100GB partition would be safe with all the updates etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
