Cannot inherit backups as sudo tmutil not found in terminal

I get a "sudo: tmutil: command not found" message on terminal when I am trying to inherit backups as per the fantastic instructions on the website by pondini. What does it mean and how can I correct it?
My old backups on time machine are not highlighted on time machine so cannot restore them. This is either because I have restored the OS or repaired the external HD used for backups.

Lets' see....The thread is titled "Cannot inherit backups as sudo tmutil not found in terminal".
The OP just replied "Any idea what would be equivalent for 10.6.8 to inherit backups? Or is it even possible to do so for 10.6.8?"
The question was asked in the post right before mone. I should have highlighted that, I guess. Sorry.
To answer your second comment, I DID "go to the website" and looked for information. Including finding this thread.
DId not find an answer.
For anyone out there looking for an actual answer beyond "go find it yourself", the fact is that you CANNOT reconnect a backup in SL. THIS asnwered my question and I hope it helps others looking for the same.

         Hello all,
I have had WAY too many problems with this laptop, and at this point in its miserable little life, I've decided to just wipe the hard drive and start fresh, not caring at all what happens to the files left on there. As previously stated in one of my earlier questions (That was, might I add, never fully answered.), this late 2008 MacBook (aluminum) has a problem where it does not boot up, and just endlessly shows the gray spinning pinwheel. Four months later, that just stops, and now when trying to boot up with my normal startup disk, it brings me right to the Recovery disk and tries to reinstall OS X. I tried, it failed 5 minutes in. So I tried to wipe the hard drive, and it says:  Disk Erase failed with the error: Couldn't unmount disk.   I looked it up and I saw that if I went into the Terminal and typed: sudo diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk0 , it would unmount the disk. But whenever I type that, it says: -bash: sudo: command not found. I have no idea how to fix this, and I would really like to be able to use my laptop again without giving somebody my money to do it for me.
                                                 Thanks,
                                                      Luke

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
             installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. You may then open App Store, click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar, and re-download any OS X upgrade you purchased except Mavericks. Since Yosemite has been released the App Store may not let you re-download Mavericks, but it will let you download Yosemite.

  • IPod cannot be synced. Required file not found?

I havent had any trouble syncing my ipod until last week when i purchased a song. When i dragged the song to a playlist on my ipod, it appeared grey in my playlist (because it was still loading) and then disappeared. I repeated this until i gave up and I reported this as an issue to itunes. When i tried again it worked and i thought maybe the problem had fixed itself, but i tried to add a CD to my ipod a few days ago and it only synced half of the songs. Now when i try to sync the leftover songs an error box pops up saying "The iPod (name of ipod) cannot be synced. Required file not found."
Some songs will sync perfectly normal, some load but disappear, some eventually just sync, and some won't sync at all. Has anyone had this problem/ can anyone help SOLVE it? please and thank you!!!

    Try this:
    Let your iPod charge up.
Attempt to sync a large play list.
When the iPod shuts down and you get the error message, quickly click through the dialog boxes on iTunes so when the iPod comes back up iTunes will attempt to sync again.
When the sync starts again after the iPod reboot, click the little X in the bar that shows how many tracks have been loaded. This will stop the sync and you'll be able to eject your iPod.
After it's been ejected, unplug the connector from the iPod and see what happens to the battery indicator. Mine goes down to almost gone and red - then after a few minutes it comes up to about 2/3 strength - but it should be full after being fully charged and just syncing a few hundred tracks.

It appears that you may not have a properly installed OS X system.
You must be connected to the Internet to reinstall OS X.
In the menu bar, choose Apple menu > Restart. Once your Mac restarts (and the gray screen appears), hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys.
Select “Disk Utility,” and then click Continue.
Select your startup disk from the list on the left, and then Repair Disk.
After disk is repaired, select Reinstall OS X, then click Continue.
Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select a disk, select your current OS X disk

  • Sudo: command not found

OK, I got Jaguar installed and all updated on my trusty Wallstreet. the first time I installed it, something got messed up, and the desktop would not show up. So, I reinstalled, with a minmial install, then added in the BSD subsystem. I thought everything was fine, except the terminal would not display "welcome to Darwin!" when opened, instead, all I get is bash-2.05a$ when it starts up.
So, when trying to run some shell scripts (to uninstall something), I typed in sudo and dragged the script to the terminal window, and pressed enter. all I got was: Sudo: command not found. So, I tried the old standby, su. it asked for my password (yes, I am running this from an admin account), and all it said was su: sorry. I know I am typing in my password correctly.
the next step was to see where sudo is located, so i typed in
    which sudo
    and all I got was
    no sudo in /bin /sbin /usr/bin /usr/sbin
so, from the looks of it, sudo was never installed. How am I supposed to get this back? reinstall the BSD subsystem, or is there some Quick and Dirty(tm) way to get it back?
I am not afraid to play around in the terminal, as I am a Linux/unix junkie.
    thanks.
    -digital

It's fixed. it was just a bad copy. I got another one, and now when I launch the terminal, it says
Last login: Fri Mar 2 19:53:49 on ttyp1
    Welcome to Darwin!
    [Leo-Titus-LeBron-Vs-Computer:~] leolebron%
and when I type sudo, it says:
    usage: sudo -V | -h | -L | -l | -v | -k | -K | [-H] [-P] [-S] [-b] [-p prompt]
    [-u username/#uid] -s | <command>
So, it all works. I knew something was different, as right after running the setup assistant, it ran software update, which the other copy did not do.
    thanks for all the input.

  • Cannot delete file error -43 file not found

I cannot find and/or delete a file. The error is -43 file not found. It prevents me form making a backup with carbon copy.
The file was in applications / illustrator / legal / strangecharacters.html (now in trash) and size 112kb.
I am the admin of the machine on OSX 10.4.8
I have read & write permissions
Owner og the file is system.
I cannot change the filename: Unexpected error code -43!
I cannot change owner: Unexpected error code 213!
I cannot drag the file out of the containing folder i.e. legal (i get grayed stop icon instead of the expected green plug icon at the mouse pointer).
I can drag the legal folder around i.e. to the trash.
I can not delete the folder and its contents with empty or secure emtpy trash.
    I tried:
Repairing privileges. Nothing to repair, all is well.
Rebuilding Locate Database but got 'cannot find the file code-43' while the folder was still in its original location: applications / illustrator /
I logged out and back as admin and different user.
    I restarted.
I tried to delete the file via Terminal with rm and with command below as suggested by apple technote. The result is not as desired:
    % chflags -R nouchg /Users/macuser/.Trash/Legal\ 22-06-59/Tie\314\202\314\201ng\ Vie\314\202\314\243t.html
chflags: /Users/macuser/.Trash/Legal 22-06-59/Tiếng Việt.html: No such file or directory
I started up from a different volume and tried the above.
    Anyone?

as in my previous post, i found that part of my hard drive directory was corrupt. .ie. short version: there was a discrepancy between what the directory knew to be on the disk and what the finder showed me...
so i did a startup in single mode (command-s) and type fsck -fy at the prompt to do a disk repair. took aout three runs and 20 minutes but after that i got the desired message: disk appears to be ok. i typed reboot which restarted the machine. i then ran disk utillity repair privileges.
    everything now is fine.
note: working with bluetooth keyboard and mouse in single mode worked on my G5 (not sure though if this applies to all models), also fans make a lot of noise, like your machine is about to take off... dont worry)
    hope this helps

  • HT5627 When I do as written, i get the message sudo:serveradmin not found

I have tried toenable mail to send larger emails attachement, i found a way to do this, through terminal on an appel support page. However whan i posted the command line in terminal, it answeres; SUdo: server admin not found, any ideas?

The correct format of the command is
sudo serveradmin settings mail:postfix:message_size_limit = number
as discussed in this article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5627
However you need to do this command on the mail server and not on a Mac client.

  • Time Machine is off.... and command entered sudo tmutil disable local in terminal... back ups still growing...

If anyone can help. I dont have much space... laptop is very new but has 36 gb in backups and growing! Time Machine is off... and I also entered command sudo tmutil disablelocal in terminal to disable mobile backups.
    Thanks in advance.

Thank you. It's all back to normal (took around 7 hours on the late 2009 iMac). Time Machine's become better now compared to the last time I used it to migrate everything automatically (Snow Leopard days). With Maverick's Time Machine, it's almost like a cloning (except for the password) tool now. But it's always great to name the account and maybe the hardisk the same names so can just replace a newly installed OS.
    God bless. Thanks again.

  • Backup/Restore - File Source Not Found

I'm having trouble restoring a .bak file while moving it from laptop A to laptop B. First, on A, I backed up the 'Staging' db, creating the Staging.bak file which I transferred to laptop B. I restored (or thought I did) the .bak on B but it doesn't show
up on my list  of B's Databases even after refreshing and restarting SQL Server.
Second, I then tried with T-SQL as below and got the error shown. I'm specifying a path with '\Program Files' and the error msg refers to 'Program Files (x86)' which, on my machine, doesn't have the subdir's listed in the err msg. Those dir's are part of the
\Program Files path (and this is also the 'Data Path' listed in SQL Server Config Mgr).  I'm running SQL Server 2014 Express on Windows 8.1.
    RESTORE DATABASE Staging
    FROM DISK = 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\Backup\Staging.bak' ;
    Msg 5133, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

    Msg 3156, Level 16, State 3, Line 1
File 'Staging' cannot be restored to 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\DATA\Staging.mdf'. Use WITH MOVE to identify a valid location for the file.
    Msg 5133, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

    Msg 3156, Level 16, State 3, Line 1
File 'Staging_log' cannot be restored to 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\DATA\Staging_log.ldf'. Use WITH MOVE to identify a valid location for the file.
    Msg 3119, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Problems were identified while planning for the RESTORE statement. Previous messages provide details.
    Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
    RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally.

When you take a backup all information including the file path(.mdf/ldf) is included as part of the backup. As you found out if you just run restore database it will try to restore to the exact same location(C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\DATA\).
Looks like you dont have this path(C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\DATA\) on target server where you are performing this restore.
To know the files and locations from backup file, you can use RESTORE FILELISTONLY option allows you to see a list of the files that were backed up and their original path.  So for example if you have a full backup you will see all of the data files
(mdf) and the log file (ldf) and their path.
RESTORE FILELISTONLY FROM DISK = 'C:\AdventureWorks.BAK' WITH FILE = 1
The result set would like the following.  The things that are helpful here include the LogicalName and PhysicalName.
    ColumnName
    Value
    Value
    LogicalName
    AdventureWorks_Data
    AdventureWorks_Log
    PhysicalName
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\AdventureWorks_Data.mdf
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\AdventureWorks_Log.ldf
So as suggested please use WITH MOVE option while restore to provide the valid path.
