Cannot insert a CD/DVD into the Mac Mini

It used to work fine, I have Tiger, no major update or any changes lately. The Mac Mini will not "swallow" any discs, if I push it in with my nails, the eject mechanism works and ejects the disc but it won't take it in. Do you think it's a hardware problem? Thank you for any help!

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
First thing to check is that there is not a disk already in the drive - it is possible even if it doesn't appear on the desktop, and the symptoms you describe are not dissimilar to what you would expect if the drive is already occupied. Reboot your system while holding the (left) mouse button down. If there's a disk in there, it'll attempt to spit it out during the startup process.
Assuming no disk, make sure you are feeding the disk far enough for the mechanism to grasp it (it needs to be almost all the way in).
After that, I would try a PMU reset if it is a PPC Mac mini, or an SMC reset if an Intel model - instructions as follows:
To reset the PMU +(PPC mini only)+
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
-Wait 10 seconds.
-Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
-Let go of the power button.
-Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.
To reset the SMC +(Intel mini only)+
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
-Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.

  • Can't insert CD or DVD into the drive

I am wondering if my CD/DVD drive has gone bad.   Mine seems like something is stuck inside. I can insert a CD or DVD halfway, and then it feels like it's hitting something, but there is no CD icon in finder or in disk utility. I have tried all the typical things to eject a disk in case one is indeed stuck (like holding down the mouse button upon restart, using the drutil command in terminal, holding the eject button for 15 seconds, resetting the PRAM, etc.) Nothing has worked. Ideas? This iMac is 3.5 year old, so it's long out of warranty.

Is it saying "System X" or "OSX"? The precise working for an issue can make a difference.
Are you using a retail installer DVD (black) of Leopard or a DVD that came with another machine (gray)? Only retail installer versions will install on any computer. Machine-specific versions only work with that particular computer.
I cannot force a startup from any CD or DVD
Again, precise wording is critical. What CD are you trying to start from? No OSX operating system (except a few issued with utilities) for Intel Macs has been released on CD. This suggests to me that you are trying to install from an old version that will not boot your computer anyway, unless you didn't mean CD. What other DVDs have you tried?
In general I am trying to determine if you are even using versions that should boot your computer. If you are sure you are then you can try restarting by inserting a DVD (say, your Tiger DVD that came with your computer which should work) and holding down the option key.
Do you mean "Repair Privileges" or "repair permissions"?
You can only repair a disc from which you are not booted. You need to boot from your original DVD that came with your Mac and run Disk Utility from that in order to repair your internal hard drive.

  • I have no audio from the mac mini to the hdtv via hdmi cable.

This started immediately after the latest "apple software update"  I updated it automatically on 6/24/2011.  I have an elgato eye tv connected to the mac mini that provides BOTH audio and video through the HDMI to the HDTV.  The elgato eye tv works fine.  I get both audio and video.
However, I only get picture and NO sound from the mac mini to the HDTV via the HDMI output.  No streaming audio either - only picture. Ive tried pandora, netflix, hulu, etc.  I even put in a DVD into the mac mini and again I receive a picture through THE HDMI but no audio.
I've shutdown and rebooted.  I've disconnected power and reconnected power.  I've gone into the system preferences, audo, and highlight the SONY HDTV as the output.  But still nothing.  I do notice when I toggle between the "internal speakers' and the HDMI option, the audio arrow on the lower right is bright blue during the internal speakers option but is grey when the HDMI option is connected.
I called apple care.  Since I'm 98 days past my 90 days of coverage there is no help via human being.  They offered me to set an appointment at the local apple store but they suggested I bring down my 60 inch HDTV with me to the store to be sure it is not a "Sony" issue.  I hope someone can help me resolve this without having to put this mac mini on craigslist and taking a $ hit.
This was not an issue yesterday.  It became an issue after the latest and greatest "update" to prepare our machines for the lovely lion.
    Thanks.

I have the same issue.  I also have the 2010 mac mine and use hdmi for audio to my receiver.  I get audio from eye tv with no problems, but it seems to lock the path so that only it can use that path for audio.  If I restart the computer and do not start eye tv everything else works with hdmi audio.  I have tried using the system settings and changing the source there but it doesnt seem to matter.

  • Can I put a mini DVD into my Mac?

I am trying to transfer my home movies onto my Mac from mini dvds.is it ok to put these mini dvds into the Mac slot??

Do not do that!!!!!!!!!! The user's manual expressly warns you not to insert anything but standard sized CDs and DVDs. Mini discs will get stuck and not eject.

  • When i insert the DVD into the optical drive, the mac book hanged....

when i insert the DVD into the optical drive or press the eject button , the mac book hanged....
i need to turn off the mac book by pressing the turn off button directly.

Well there is Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck witch includes step by step instructions to run disk repair without the install disk.
But before doing that, it's a good idea to backup. You may want to troubleshooting your superdrive / disk before hand. if I disk repair fails you may need the disk working to re-install the OS.
Dose the computer read any DVDs? if no, you may want to use Troubleshooting the slot load optical disc drive.

we put a camcorder dvd into the our mac book and it doesn't recognize it and we cant get it out.  what can we do???

Apple drives in MacBooks do not support mini DVDs. They cannot be injected or ejected properly. Some of them work in tray-loaders like on the Mac Pro.
Yes, make an appointment and take it to the Genius Bar.

  • HT2801 I inserted a memory card into the DVD in my imac

I inserted a memory card into the DVD in my imac and was wondering what external DVD drive will work with an iMac 21.5" late 2010. Would take it to be fixed but they take too long and can't really be wothout this computer. Thanks.

turn it off, and turn it on its side and see if you can gently shake it out.  You could also cut a firm piece of cardboard in the shape of a hook to help fish it out. Also, any external dvd player will work.

  • Importing a regular DVD into my Mac and the Burned

    To whom it may concern,
Hi I'm trying to import a regular DVD into my Mac, but when I try to used imovie the folder containing the files is grey and I can't do anything I'm not sure if this is the best way to import a DVD (movie) and then burn it so I will have a copy. The movie that I wanna import is not an original copy is a copy of the original, but it work on any DVD player as well as in my Mac. I watched all the tutorials and none of them give me a solution. I would appreciate if someone can advised me in this matter.
    Thanks and Regards
Do I need a different program?

If the DVD you are trying to copoy is a DVD-R that you made, then this may help you:
How to copy previously-burned DVD-R video discs

It will not help, however if it is a protected DVD.

  • I converted from a PC to a Mac Mini.  I have my PC documents backed up on a DVD disk.  I have an external DVD drive connected to the Mac Mini.  I want to open them up and save them to the Mac, BUT....when I put the DVD disk in the Mac is NOT reading it!

I converted from a PC to a Mac Mini.  I have my PC documents backed up on a DVD disk.  I have an external DVD drive connected to the Mac Mini.  I want to open these documents up from the DVD storage and save them to the Mac, BUT....when I put the DVD disk in the Mac is NOT reading it!

    Hi Joe,
Thanks for your quick response.  I should add....it worked before.  When I previously inserted the two DVDs into this remote drive, and I went into finder, I could click on the "remote device" line and see all my saved documents (excel, word, etc) on the DVD and open them on the Mac.  Now I cannot see them, when I try to open them on the Mac, nothing happens, nothing is displayed.  I just re-tested the remote DVD drive with a CD and, no problem, it opened up the CD via iTunes and I cold play the CD.  SO......I know the remote DVD drive (it's an LG by the way) is fine, it's something to do with some settings on my mini mac, especially where I could open it previously.  I do not remember changing any settings since then.
When I go into system preferences and click on CD/DVD it gives me options of how to open up a music CD (default is iTunes), a DVD (default is iMovie), etc.  The problem is my DVD is all miscellaneious files/documents.  I just want to be able to see them in the finder.  I also tried to open them via microsoft word, from the remote disk and again, it could not open the drive, even though some of the documents were microsoft word documents.  Again, I was able to open them previously and the DVD is not corrupted in any way.
    Any additional advice?
    Thank you!

  • How far do you have to sticka CD or DVD into the slot drive?

I literally have to stick the entire CD or DVD into the slot before it picks it up. Even if I just stick it in after 85% of the disk is in the slot, it'll take it and get stuck with some of the disk outside. Is this normal? Should I take it to a genius bar?
White MacBook Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I don't have a Macbook, but in both of my iMac's and iBooks I have to put it in almost all the way to get it to take the disc. If I try to insert the disc too slow, they tend to not get read and just spin until I eject and re-insert them a little quicker.
Interestingly my G3 iMac was not this finicky. It would take the disc after about 50% insertion, and as far as I know ws the last slot load Mac that could safely accept mini disc,... I wish they would re-add that capability.

  • Is the Mini-Dvi adapter suppose to click into the back on the Mac mini?

Is the Mini-Dvi adapter suppose to click into the back on the Mac mini? It does on my mac book but not on the Mac mini. I sort of have to just jam it in there, no nice clicking sound, and it does not feel very secure.

If after 'jamming it in there' it actually works, then at least you know it's the correct type of adapter. However, if it doesn't work, you are definitely not inserting it correctly or into the correct location. In either case, you may have a damaged port - all the connections on the rear when applied correctly with anything like a decent quality standard type connector should work smoothly. You should never have to 'jam' anything into the back of your mini.

  • When I insert an SD card into the iMac nothing happens.  It worked fine until today, I double clicked on the card icon on the desk top and it disappeared! Any suggestions?

When I insert an SD card into the iMac nothing happens.  It worked until today, when I double clicked on the SD card icon on the desktop and then it disappeared!  Cannot find in "Finder".  iPhoto does not open upon inserting card.  Reformatted card with device (camera).  Used Time machine to restart computer before the double click occurence...did not lhelp.  Any suggestions?

Have a look in Finder Preferences: Click on the desktop, Finder>Finder Preferences.General tab - is there a tick in "External Disks'? If not, tick it.
