Cannot install 64bit 10.2.0.4 Client on 64 bit Vista

Question

Please help!
I am trying to install the client package located here:

Installation just quits after unzipping the files into \user\AppData\Local\Temp\ subfolder. No errors in the log file.
I have spend a whole day on this, searched forums for helpful suggestions, nothing is working. No matter what I try, the install just stops. Others have reported the same behavior, but the solutions offered in those threads do not work for me.
I've un-installed all ORACLE first, and it failed. I've installed 10.2.0.2 32 bit first (success) but 10.2.0.4 failed. I've ran manually run setup with ignoreSysPrereqs. I've tried installing the 10204 server, and it fails. I've tried under Vista, WinServer2k8, and Win7. I've tried on system with Java already installed. I've tried on system without Java already installed. I've tried as local administrator. I've tried as domain user with local admin privs.
Please only answer if you have experienced this problem, or have an initmate knowledge of this particular distribution. Please, I don't need a lecture on RTFM, using Google, or searching these forums. I've done all that for hours upon hours, and I've tried everything I've found. I have no problems installing 10.2.0.2. Only the 10.2.0.4 bits fail.

EDIT:
Here is what happens when trying to install 10.2.0.1 64 bit client on WinServer2k8. Its the first error dialog I have seen. The log file has similar content to above.

Once you apply the patch, the OUI automatically detects which specific components to upgrade. One of the differences when you apply the patchset against an RDBMS and a client installation is that the RDBMS requires all the databases to perform a post install phase where the data dictionary must be upgraded as well. On the client installation it is just enough to apply the patchset against the client oracle home.
