Cannot install Guest Additions Virtual Box

Hallo!I am a total newbie in Solaris and Virtual Box.
I have installed Solaris 10 (guest OS)via Virtual Box in XP (host OS). I would like to install other s/w in Solaris (SUNWi1cs and SUNWi15cs so that I can install Oracle 10g).
To do this,I must install Guest Additions first.I have gone to Devices ->Install Guest Additions but nothing seems to happen.I have tried to mount CD/DVD-ROM and also the Solaris.iso file but still nothing happens.
Eventually I would like to install SUNWi1cs and SUNWi15cs as below
pkgadd –d /cdrom/cdrom0/Solaris_10/Product SUNWi1cs SUNWi15cs
Please help me.
Thanks.

Did you follow the instructions at http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch04.html#id463751

How can I minimize and maximize Solaris 10 installed on VM virtual Box.
    Thanks

Solaris is working just fine. Everything is ok. now since I open Solaris via VM Virtual box, the Solaris main page fills only half of the monitor. I can minimize/maximize the Virtual Box. But Solaris dimensions are fix and doesn't change. This leaves me a little room to open applications on Solaris. I had the same problems with my Ubuntu, by installing adds-on it was fixed. For Solaris I installed “Guest additions”, didn’t help.

The Host Key should be displayed in the lower right-hand corner of the VirtualBox machine's window. A pop-up message will also appear when you first start up the virtual machine, explaining that you will need the host key to escape out.

  • Problem installing ubuntu in virtual box

Hello lately i tried installing ubuntu LTS in virtual box 3.2 using an ISO image downloaded in hard disk but every time i try to run it, it says upgrade it to new ubuntu 10.04 LTS though this is the same one i installed. The softwares which i downloaded earlier are all gone. What might be the reason for this please do let me know.........I was willing to try ubuntu but this is giving me a headache now.
    Thanks for any help afforded

    Thanks for your reply,
Yeah i too guessed that the problem might be that it is booting from the iso image in the hard disk so i just moved it to another lokation as i did not know how to unmount the image and now after i have done so the problem of self rebooting is gone atleast for now. Sorry i could not make it much clear was to what the problem was, thanks anyways.

I have upgraded my VirtualBox Vm to 10049. I did not have any problems, it took a long time though. As others have said, check your video memory (I have 128MB) also your free HDD space, You should need at least 8GB free. I am running VirtualBox v 4.3.24.

  • Installing ArchLinx+Guest Additions in Virtual Box(error during guest)

The Arch Linux install seemed to go through smoothly.  I installed it using the wiki page, rebooted, and logged in as root.  I am installing this for a class, so trying to follow the instructions to do so.  Next, we are supposed to install 'Guest Additions' for Virtual box using the instructions below:
Now, you should install "Guest Additions" for VirtualBox. Guest additions allows you to share files between host and guest systems. This is very convenient for development as you will need to copy files back and forth between the host and guest operating systems. You can download Guest Additions at *link*.
You need to start the virtual machine before you can continue installing Guest Additions. To do that, just select your VM name from the list on the left hand side in VirtualBox and click Start. After logging into Arch Linux, you should mount this ISO image just as you had mounted the Arch Linux ISO file. You can then mount the cdrom inside the Guest OS by doing:
    mkdir /mnt/cdrom
    mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom
Now install the guest additions by doing:
    cd /mnt/cdrom
    sh ./VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run
This will compile and install the kernel modules necessary for Guest Additions functionality. Please note that if you
recompile your own kernel (later as a part of project requirements), you will have to run this again so that the modules are
compiled and installed for the new kernel too.
Under settings for VBox, I mounted the Guest Additions image file, started Arch Linux, logged in as root, and followed the instructions above.  I was able to do all of the above, but when I excute the last line, I am given this message:
    http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/3971/linuxd.png
I have no idea where to go from here, and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also,  I feel like I have installed Arch Linux incorrectly.  All the videos and pictures I see show a GUI type interface, but all I am presented with is a text-based interface.  When I boot it up, it asks me to log in, and I am then taken to the command line, but I don't see the same GUI interface everyone else seems to have.  Is this normal for a basic Arch Linux install?  Thanks in advance.

Arch has no GUI until you install one. Some people don't want a GUI, so it's left to the user. The base install has only a command line interface.
You should probably read the Beginners Guide.
In case you missed them, there's two short articles, also on the wiki that might help you understand Arch, Arch Linux and The Arch Way

  • Virtual Box 4.0.8 Windows Host - Guest Additions problem

    Hi,
I have installed Virtual Box 4.0.8 with host O/S Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit Processor AMD Phenom II x6 and enabled the VT.
I installed OEL 5.6 and 6.1 guests (both x86_64 version).
But when I installed Guest Additions, nothing happened and only showing maximum resolution *1024x768.*
I never had this problem before with my older machine and older version of Virtual Box.
is this known issues? is this cause by the VT or conflict with the graphic card?
    Any advice appreciated

This would be better addressed on the VirtualBox forum.   see https://www.virtualbox.org/

    Hi,
if you don't have any idea google is you best friend.
Ask the question you posted here to google, and you will find a lot of good sites with information on this.
However, there is also a good guide, to setup a RAC in Virtualbox, which might answer most of your questions:
    http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/OracleDB11gR2RACInstallationOnOEL5UsingVirtualBox.php
(Even if you don't intend to install a RAC the steps, till you install the Oracle Software, are the same...).
BTW: Found this via. google ;)

This inquiry was initially posted to the Predictive Self Healing forum for some unfathomable reason.
It has now been moved to the Oracle VM and Virtualization forum for closer topic alignment.
    Advice to original poster:
If you couldn't read enough posts to figure out which forum was appropriate, how are you going to be able to read replies to your question? You should go back to wherever you found Virtualbox and Solaris and read the product documenteation. Installation instructions are already there.

  • Screen Resolution in Virtual Box

    Okay, my next obstacle.
I installed guest additions as the wiki instructed:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Vi … _Additions
and have xorg installed, but with the minimum xorg-server package.
I read another forum post from awhile ago about hardcoding resolution in a GRUB config file, but I don't have the config file they spoke of, and I can't seem to find the post anymore.
Screen resizing doesn't appear to work. In changing the size of the virtual box window, the screen resolution remains the same. I'm not exactly sure shared-clipboard is working either, though I don't have a definitive test for that.
Syncing the host time and guest time seems to have worked though.
How do I go about enabling screen-resizing? I would prefer if it auto-resized based on the virtualbox window size, instead of hardcoding a bigger resolution. If that's possible.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by the minimum xorg-server package - just X with no desktop environment or window manager?  If so, I think that might be the issue.  As an experiment, you could clone your installation in Virtualbox, and install Xfce on the clone.  If you can resize the window with Xfce running, then you know you have everything configured properly.
For hard-coding a resolution at boot time, you can put "vga=792" in your grub config file.  I use syslinux, so I can't tell you for sure about grub.  But in syslinux, mine looks like this:
    APPEND root=/dev/sda1 ro vga=792
You can google the keywords "vga resolution codes" to find codes for other settings, but 792 will give you 1024x768 with 24 bits.
Sorry I'm not much of an expert, but hopefully that will give you some avenues to pursue.

howto use shared folders in Linux guests - http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15868
After installing the Guest Additions, you can use the Shared Folders Functionality. To access them, you have to define at least one in the VM settings. Open the VM Settings and go to Shared Folders. You can define them there. Click on the Add button and browse for a folder you want to share. Make sure that the name of the share doesn't contain any illegal characters like white spaces. Keep the name as simple as possible. In this howto, I will use the name share.
Now that you have defined a SF, it's time to mount it. Boot the Guest and open a terminal. Create a folder where you will mount it on. E.g. in your home folder. I will use ~/host for the mount point.
Now mount it with the following command:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
sudo mount -t vboxsf share ~/host
Note that with this, the default mount options are used and all files are owned by root. This can be changed by adding some mount options. Options are passed on with the -o parameter. You can use multiple options with one parameter, seperate the values with a comma. See the man page of mount for more info on which options you can use. The User Manual also notes the options compatible with the Shared Folders. To mount the SF so that you are the owner of the files, use this command:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
        sudo mount -t vboxsf -o uid=1000,gid=1000 share ~/host
If you want to have it mount automatically upon each boot, put the mount command in /etc/rc.local (Debian based distro's), or whatever script is run at the end of the boot process. The Shared Folders service should mount them automatically, but that doesn't always happen.
Using /etc/fstab has little effect, because that file is processed before the SF module is loaded and will fail to mount the share. Sometimes, the share does get mounted because the GA check for it when they are loaded upon boot, but it's very flaky, meaning it doesn't work most of the time. You're better of with the first option.

  • Connecting an external USB Hard drive using Virtual Box

I Installed latest version of Virtual Box and created an Ubuntu Linux 12.04 guest without any hassle (after installing guest additions). My question is, I want to connect an external drive (formatted for Linux) using one of the usb ports of my Mac mini. I want my Linux OS to detect and mount this hard drive and be able to read/write to it, and even if possible, to make my VM boot from it. Is this feasible? Thanks for your help.

  • Virtual box vs Oracle Vm

    Hi,
I want to know the pros and cons for tehse 2 products whicg Oracle owns
If i have to use Virtual box as it has features like snapshots - using physical serial port of the server on the VM guest and using USB's , what are the pre - requisites to use it
Is this as stable as Oracle VM and a freeware?
Can i install server OS as guests with Virtual box.
Like Oracle VM has - VM server which has OEL as base and is managed by Oracm VM manager - how is the setup for Virtual box.
    Thanks.......

Virtualbox is an application, similar in configuration and setup like VMware, VirtualPC and other VM applications that need a host Operating system. Oracle VM server has it's on OS and usually gets installed on a bare metal computer.

    http://blogs.oracle.com/virtualization/2009/05/oracle_vm_blog_basics_of_oracl.html
It seems for the purpose of testing you might be able to install it as a guest OS in VMware Fusion and maybe Virtualbox:
    http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=31357
From what I understand, Virtualbox is not a certified platform for Oracle Enterprise Linux and running Oracle database. However, Oracle VM and VMware ESX are certified platforms for OEL when installed directly on the computer hardware.
