Cannot install or uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support

Trying to help a friend whose original problem was she was unable to connect her ipod. When I checked devices I found it was using the microsoft USB driver. I was unable to persuade it to use the apple driver so resorted to uninstall everything as per support instructions and re-install. Had problems uninstalling something (maybe AMDS) as it kept rolling back but after several tries it went from the uninstall list after some kind of complaint about the user not being an administrator (not true).
Did not work when re-installed so tried uninstall/install again. This time it uninstalled cleanly but then failed on the install. I had a look around and most things seemed to be uninstalled OK but found that AMDS was still installed and registered as a service but had failed to start. I had no way of uninstalling it because it did not appear in the installed programs list. I thought that maybe if I could install it then I could then uninstall it. I read about splitting the install exe into seperate MSIs so did so and ran the AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi. This failed and when I subsequently ran it using msiexec I found the error was:
DIFXAPP: INFO:   Could not open file C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\netaapl64.inf_amd64_neutral_bf78 5db627c6d127\netaapl64.inf. (Error code 0x3: The system cannot find the path specified.)
DIFXAPP: ERROR:  PnP Install failed. (Error code 0x3EE: The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the opened file is no longer valid.)
When I looked in DriverStore I found that the directory netaapl64.inf_amd64_neutral_bf785db627c6d127 didn't exist but there was another netaapl64.inf_amd64_neutral but a different suffix. I thought this might be the problem so saw that pnputil could be used to remove it so did so but it still fails with the same error. At this point I thought I had better stop digging and seek help. Any suggestions other than re-install Windows 7 gratefully received.
The environment is Windows 7 64 bit and the iTunes version is 64 bit 10.7.0.21.

Just in case anybody comes across the same problem I thought I would provide an update. Unfortunately everything I tried failed and I finally had to restore the laptop to factory settings.
I tried manually removing AMDS by removing the service with sc, deleting the files under Program Files (X86)\Common Files\Apple and cleaning up the registry using ccleaner. Tried the install again but it still failed with the same error.
I then installed iTunes to another 64 bit Windows laptop (this failed claiming it was interrupted (how I love iTunes) but it had loaded AMDS). I then copied the netaapl64... directory from this machine to the failing machine (needing to take ownership and change permissions on the FileRepository directory). I then ran the install again and this time it worked !!! BUT... the AMDS service failed to start! At this point I decided to throw in the towel. It was either that or throw the machine through the window.
If anybody else ever comes to me with an iTunes problem they will be quite surprised at the reaction of someone they think of as very mild mannered!

  • Cannot uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support

I have a pc with Windows 7 (32-bit) operating system and cannot get Apple Mobile Device Support to uninstall.  I begin the uninstall process and it goes through however at the very end it reverses and then tells me that it is done.  I have deleted all the program files and it still does this.  I cannot get this to uninstall... please help.

First try a repair install of Apple Mobile Device Support. If that goes through successfully, see if you can now uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support.
If the Repair install doesn't help, try using the fixit from the following Microsoft document to remove Apple Mobile Device Support:

  • ITunes 10.2 Upgrade fix temporary. Fix to iTunes 10.2.2 by uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support and install AMDS from 10.0. Worked only to fail in 5 days. iTunes back to very slow to open and will not see device (iPhone) connected. Sorry

I was one this site for 20+ Days and found a fix for 10.2.1 when it failed. I Uninstalled all, following other attempts that failed, then installed latest Version from Apple iTunes 10.2.12. I then uninstalled Apple Mobile Device Support (AMDS) and installed AMDS from the older 10.0 version of iTunes. Success it worked. Today, I am now back to old problem, iTnes takes very long time to open and fails to see my device when connected (iPhone). I really only have iTunes for my iPhone no extensive library a few hundred CD's in music location and no podcasts. I have less than 6 moveis and want to update them now. I am willing to lose all in iTunes library if need be just to get computer to see G3 iPhone with iOS 4.2 and let me synch once again. I like security of backup too. It older iTunes may now not support, that too is OK. I still want to get the 3GS (no 4G desires, yet) and do not care if any of it is the latest from Apple as long as it works.

    Hi Erik,
Your basic suggestion actually worked for me. But this is what I did for others who are having issues removing/installing etc.
    1. Download the latest iTunes 8.2. You should end up with a file iTunesSetup.
    2. If you dont already have WinRAR, download free copy from http://www.rarlab.com/ and install.
    3. Right click on iTunesSetup and choose "Extract" to somewhere you know. eg C:\itunetemp
    4. Open up folder where you extracted iTunesSetup and double-click applemobiledevicesupport.msi
    5. It should ask you if you want to repair or remove... choose remove.
    6. REBOOT your PC.
    7. Go back to where you extracted iTunesSetup and double-click applemobiledevicesupport.msi and go through the install.
    8. Plug in your iPhone.
If all is well iTunes should automatically start and start syncing your iPhone.
    Goodluck all!
    Cheers.

  • HT4061 How do I uninstall apple mobile device support?

I am trying to fix a problem with iTunes, after an update failed. I uninstalled it, and downloaded the latest version. Now I get an error when I start up my laptop, stating a file is missing from aspdaemon and I can't install itunes as I apparently don't have sufficient administrator privileges! Trying to follow these steps http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5376 however I cannot uninstall apple mobile device support. I go through the steps to uninstall, the green progress bar gets near the end of the uninstall, then it appears to cancel the process automatically without warning and closes the uninstall window. Anybody got any ideas whats going on? It just seems like problem after problem keeps appearing!
Sorry, placed this in the using iPad community as it won't let me post it without picking one and none are appropriate for a software problem on PC. Seriously getting annoyed with Apples support options tonight.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
Try going through this if you haven't already. You may also need to look on a microsoft site for more specific info as to why you can't uninstall the driver. It may be as simple as signing in as the administrator.

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • Unable to uninstall Apple mobile device support

    Hello,
I'm having big troubles with my Itunes, and more exactly with apple mobile device support.
I tried to uninstall every programmes of itunes (itunes, quick-time, apple mobile, bonjour...) to reinstall it.
I can't uninstall apple mobile device support. It won't disappear from the "programmes and applications". And the option "repair" doesn't work also. And every time i try to reinstall itunes it failed because of apple mobile device installation.
When i'm on my desk, the service apple mobile device is stopped, and when i try to start it, the computer can't reach access, and said something like "error 1053" or "can't access to sthe service". So i think that Apple mobile device support is the key of the problem, but i don't know how to fix it.
I'm a bit desperate because i didn't found anywhere some solutions, so if someone has, i will be very very grateful.
    Thanks You

Others might find this process useful for issues with iTunes 11.1.4.62....
Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

  • HT1923 I cannot uninstall apple mobile device support.  I am following the instructions for removing and reinstalling itunes but now stuck.  Please help.

I am following the instructions for removing and reinstalling itunes because I had a "msvcr80.dll missing from your computer" error.  I have uninstalled itunes and apple software update but the next one in order "apple mobile device support" will not uninstall.  According to the instructions, that one has to be removed before I can do the rest.  Would love any help I can get.

Hello and thanks so much for your quick reply. I am at a standstill, because I have done those things already and it has not worked. The repair install procedure seemed to take place quickly, but the same thing happened again when I tried to uninstall it the program after that.... It seems to proceed, then the progress bar goes backward, and there it still is!
When I downloaded the Microsoft Fixit program and asked it to uninstall the Apple Mobile device Support, it started but then got stuck and I had to shut my computer off, as it froze everything up!
I'm hoping you can help..... This seems to be a problem with the new version, and it's frustrating, because I can't use Itunes on my computer at all till we find a solution.
Perhaps if I try to restore my computer to before the Itunes 11.1.4 uodate?
Thanks so much for your help,

  • HT1923 My computer is not letting me uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support so that I can uninstall and re-install Itunes. Why is it not letting the uninstall complete?

Due to a program error, I need to uninstall and re-install Itunes. While following the instructions provided for removing the program, I found that Apple Mobile Device Support will not uninstall. The program removal begins as normal but when the completion bar almost reachs the end with time remaining - 2 seconds, the bar starts to move in the opposite direction and the time reamaining increases before the window closes on its own. And Apple mobile Device Support is still on my program list.
Does anyone know why the program won't let me remove it? Any suggestions?
