Cannot install OS using MDT on SATA drives, new Dell Optiplex 3020

Got in a few new Optiplex 3020s and wanted to deploy Win7 using MDT.
It gets to the point of going to
File: \boot\boot.sdi, waits a few seconds (when usually MDT should start) and then gets an error:
"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1.
2.
3.
Status: 0xc0000001
Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.
This is happening on a few systems, different HDs.
I have updated the MDT with the latest 3020 CAB files, as well as specifically the network drivers.  It still doesn't work.
The BIOS is the latest, as it came with A03, set to AHCI.
What might I be missing in this process?

JohnClin - Missing some information from you here.
If you are getting "black screen" boot problems, then getting the latest drivers from Dell won't help.
*HOW* are you booting up? Sounds like you are doing a PXE boot here (or USB vs DVD vs hard disk boot). Did you boot up to a PXE server with a verified uEFI image? Tells is about your PXE server. Specifically, does the Dell 3020 support CSM, and BIOS
PXE (I doubt it).
Also, in the uEFI world, we don't call it a BIOS anymore, we call it firmware. :)...

10.5.8 to 10.6 Can I use an INTERNAL SATA drive in my MacPro for back up..
or must I use an External hard dive.
I prefer to use an internal for anti "desk-clutter" purposes. I am looking
at a 2TB drive to install into my Mac Pro tower for the purpose of back up
    and time machine i guess.
Also.. if doing a clean install of 10.6 how do i restore the backed up apps
    without re-registering all of them?

A clone is a functional copy of the original, including the internal links & setting that makes it bootable if the original is. Time Machine will not make a clone of a volume, nor will a Finder copy. You can make a clone with the appropriate settings in the "Restore" tab of Disk Utility but many users find purpose-designed cloning utilities easier & simpler to use. The two most popular of these are SuperDuper! & Carbon Copy Cloner. Both are very reliable, easy to use, & well documented.
I prefer SuperDuper! for reasons that are not important here. However, even if you decide to use CCC, I suggest that you download SuperDuper! just to read the extensive documentation that comes with it.

  • Installing Solaris 10 via external CD drive on Dell Latitude D800 Laptop

Hello all, I am trying to install Solaris 10 via external CD drive on Dell Latitude D800 Laptop. After the GRUB menu it begins to load, displaying the " . . . . . ." and hangs about 1/4 way accross the screen. When attempting the install from a DVD instead of a CD the installation hangs on the same screen even sooner. Has anyone encoutered this problem?

    Hello Alex,
no, you can't use USB devices on SPARC as boot device.
The OBP (even updated ones) contains only support for the USB keyboard, but none for USB mass storage (which requires a device driver). The integrated USB ports are for slow devices like keyboard and mouse.
Using an external SCSI DVD-ROM works. Another choice is an installation via network.

  • Adobe Acrobat 8 Pro Freezing After Install on Brand New Dell Optiplex 580

    Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knew of a solution to an issue I am having.
I installed Adobe Acrobat Pro 8 onto a brand new Dell Optiplex 580 running Windows XP (AntiVirus was not installed yet).  When launching, it freezes 3-5 seconds after opening and I need to open Task Manager to kill the process.
    I have tried:
    Repair install
Deleteing Preferences folder and letting the program recreate it
Manually starting and restarting the FLEXnet service
    Running in compatibility mode
Applying the updates for Adobe Acrobat Pro (up to 8.2.4)
    Running Adobe without background services
    Manually uninstalling and reinstalling
Thanks for your help in advance,
    Seth

Another possibility to check is the free space in the TEMP folder. I believe Acrobat uses the TEMP folder for temporary storage. You might even consider increasing the size of the TEMP folder. At least this is something else to check.

    Hello All,
    I'm having trouble installing Solaris 10(x86) u4 8/07 on a new Dell OptiPlex 755.
I have also tried installing opensolaris 9/07 Express Dev snv_70b with the same issue.
I tried disabling all unnecessary hardware in the BIOS as well.
After GNU GRUB loads and I select Solaris install after about 20 dots.... I get:

I am only installing Solaris 10 - no other OS will be on the HD.
Is there any hope for getting SolX installed on this machine or should I return this hardware and by a different model? I have to build 2 pc's with SolX for development boxs.
    Thank you in Advance,

  • Would you be willing to install WinXP using a floppy and driver w/ BootCamp

I think Apple may be able to provide us full SATA compatibility quickly if they were willing to program the AHCI controller device in enhanced AHCI mode.
This would require us to install (reinstall) windows and use a USB floppy to install the intel AHCI drivers, since they are not a part of WinXP. This is generally what users of the server-class Intel motherboards have to do if they want full SATA performance.
Users who are not accustomed to WinXP installation may find this too difficult.
Perhaps instead of a BIOS set up, Apple can provide an OS X utility that allows configuration of certain system resources. Many WinTel manufacturers provide similar utilities, to simplify BIOS setup. Such a utility would allow more advanced users to enable enhanced-AHCI mode, while the mess experienced users can continue to work in PIO mode.
If you are interested in learning more about the Intel SATA controller in the WinTel environment, you can find more information in the following links:
    http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/serialATA_FAQ.mspx
    http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/sb/cs-021736.htm
ftp://download.intel.com/design/chipsets/manuals/30144401.pdf (Not specific to the 5000X chipset, but AHCI is a standard across multiple intel chipsets)
    Mac Pro 2.66   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The real problem with the Mac Pro and Windows right now is how it sets up the SATA controller device in the CSM, I believe.
Apple can fix this one of 2 ways:
    1. Give us PATA emulation with full DMA support, but this does not give us SATA NCQ.
    2. Give us Enhanced AHCI support, with NCQ, but this requires us to install an intel driver at windows install time using a USB floppy.
I believe #2 shouldn't be hard for apple to implement, but it makes Windows harder to install. That is why I called for an OS X application that lets the user choose which mode they want the SATA controller to run in.
I included the links above as background material into the full problem, from how to program the device in a BIOS (or CSM) to installing the drivers.
I am asking people, if Apple could provide a firmware update, would you be willing to install Windows again using a USB floppy and driver, or would you rather wait for PATA emulation with DMA support.
I previously wrote a posting that describes this problem:
I have spent a few days researching SATA, and how it is handled under Windows, especially Intel's implementation. Intel is pushing a standardized controller interface called AHCI. AHCI does support legacy PATA emulation. In WinTel platform, it is a requirement of the BIOS to configure the AHCI device properly. The AHCI PCI device will present different PCI subcodes depending if it is running in PATA or native mode. These PCI subcodes are used to choose the appropriate driver at boot time.
For best performance, SATA wants to run in native mode which, on the Mac Pro platform, means running the controller device in AHCI mode. AHCI fully supports DMA as well as Native Command Queuing (NCQ). Combining these two technologies give the best performance.
The PATA emulation can support DMA, depending on the actual BIOS implementation. PATA can not support NCQ.
With Boot Camp, Apple is providing a BIOS layer on top of EFI, the new standard for low-level PC firmware. This layer is called a CSM (Compatibility Support Module). I believe the CSM is not programming the device to enter AHCI mode. Also, the CSM is not providing anything other than Programmed I/O (PIO or non-DMA) in their PATA emulation support.
How do we work around this? I don't know. I am hoping to bring others into this discussion to see if we can figure something out. Considering Apple released Boot Camp 1.1 with the same flaw, I don't believe we can expect them to resolve this issue soon.
Putting the device in AHCI mode may present more difficult problems for Apple. They will have to change their CSM to support loading the boot sector using AHCI instead of PATA protocols.
There is one other thing to note, when you boot with device in AHCI mode, and then install Windows, you must install a 3rd party driver provided by Intel at installation time. Pressing the F6 key early on in the install process, inserting a floppy, which contains the driver, and then choosing the driver for installation. The CSM will have to support USB floppies (I have not tested to see if it does, yet). It also means that any user that currently has Windows installed will have to reinstall Windows once we determine how to put the device in AHCI mode.
If we were willing to give up NCQ, it might be easier for Apple to extend their CSM to include better PATA emulation. We may be limited to 100MB/s, or 133MB/s at best. This is more than enough bandwidth to support any single drive.

  • Is it possible to install Tiger using an external DVD drive?

I have one the of the first iMacs and at the time I thought I didn't need a DVD Player. However, now I was thinking of buying an external DVD player/burner. Is it possible to upgrade to Tiger using the external DVD drive since I don't have an internal one?

    Hi Celticart,
    Welcome to the discussions.
I have an old AGP PowerMac G4 to which I have hooked an external Firewire DVD Drive. I have installed Tiger without any problems, using this drive. I see no reason why it couldn't be done on an iMac as well, (provided it has Firewire).
I don't think you could get it to work using an external drive hooked up via USB.
    Cheers!

  • How do I install windows using BootCamp without cd drive fot the new MBP?

I need some softwares for my work (modelsim, altera, ltspices etc) but some of them only supports windows.
New MBP doesnt seem to have a cd driver.
How do I install windows using bootcamp without cd drivers?

You can use a USB thumbdrive to do this, assuming you have access to a windows machine to format the usb stick.
I installed Win7 on my MB Air (2011), which of course lacks a DVD drive altogether, using this technique.
Basically, you download a tool called rEFIt to your macbook. ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/refit/files/rEFIt/0.14/rEFIt-0.14.dmg/download ) When this is installed, it gives you a boot selector menu when you boot the Macbook ('Do you want to boot to MacOS or to the USB drive?')
Then you download and run an Apple tool called Boot Camp Assistant, which allows you to partition your HD for the two operating systems to share; it also pulls down all the windows drivers you need.
Then prep the USB thumbdrive on a windows machine to be a Win7 installer disk. You'll want a drive in the 4gb+ range I think. You have to set up the thumbdrive to be bootable (lots of tools for that available), and then copy all the windows installation files over to it.
Put the thumbdrive in the macbook and boot holding down the option key.
Choose the rEFIt icon on boot, then choose to boot from the thumbdrive, then format your new windows partition to something Win7 can handle, and install windows.
On my machine I followed a slightly more involved process and wiped out MacOS entirely. I would have kept it on a small partition if I'd had a bigger hard drive.

  • New 17 in MBP--cannot install OS X with SSD Hard drive

    Hi
I just bought the latest MBP from Apple's website last week. I previously had the previous generation (17in MBP with i7) I am using this SSD hard drive
    http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CTFDDAC256MAG-1G1
My problem is OS X will not install on this drive ONLY on this new MBP. It fails about 1/2 through. I have tested the drive with disk utility and it comes back fine. I ran diagnostics on a Windows box and it came back fine. I have also placed this hard drive in the previous MBP and a 13 in MBP (core 2 duo) and it installed very fast and fine. THe drive has the latest firmware from Crucial.
When I go to install, it is very slow compared to the original 750GB 5400rpm drive. It takes about an hour before it crashes. I have a call in with an Apple senior level tech, but he is off until Monday and I really need to get this fixed. I am 200 miles away from an Apple store and while I am willing to drive it, they said over the phone they can not guarentee a fix.
I swapped out RAM, reset the PRAM, cried, prayed, and begged. What's going on? Is this a design flaw?? How can I get this to go through?
I would really appreciate someones help. Thanks guys!

Do I understand correctly that you're replacing the new machine's original hard drive with this SSD? If so, here's a different approach to installing the OS on it:
Put the SSD into an external enclosure and the original drive back into the MBP. Connect the external to the MBP, boot the MBP from the internal HD, format the SSD with Disk Utility, and clone the original hard drive onto the SSD after reformatting the SSD with Disk Utility. You can do the cloning with Disk Utility, but I prefer Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper because they're more informative about what's happening during the process. After the clone is complete, install the SSD into the MBP and test.

  • Cannot install/uninstall/use flash

recently i uninstalled flash in order to install a new version,
after this i discovered i could not install flash, and although
flash had been removed some animations could play,
furthermore the "about flash" or whatever ensured me that flash was still installed.
i uninstalled it through the control panel, a fatal mistake.
since then i have tried many times to use the flash uninstaller.
i have tried downloading special system tools.
i have searched and removed every folder and every registry entry
    named "flash", "macromedia", "adobe" etc.
i have removed every visible trace of any adobe product just to be certain, with "Revo uninstaller".
    i have uninstalled/reinstalled opera.
and i have then used a registry cleaner repeatedly.
i have looked through countless discussions to get help.
i cannot install any version of flash.
the "about flash" page still tells me i have flash installed.
is there anything more to do?
the only thing i can think of is reinstalling windows,
    or buying a new computer.
or if someone let me know the location of every file
and registry entry associated with flash so i could remove them.

I should have mentioned that i have Windows XP,
    using Opera, as mentioned.
i did not find any flash10x.ocx,
i did however find a few flash.ocx files
on various places, which i removed.
    i also found and deleted
    NPSWF32.dll
    NPSWF32_FlashUtil.exe
    and flashplayer.xpt
    mentioned in http://kb.mozillazine.org/Flash
there must be some traces left in the registry
since the installer constantly fails to initialize.
i have tried disabling the firewall and antivirus
    while running the installer.
and i have tried all the standard instructions.
The browser does not claim that flash is installed anymore,
but the installers still fail to initialize when they start.

  • Anyone using sata_promise w/ SATA drives, please help.

A recently submitted a kernel patch to ensure that PATA ports are detected on Promise FastTrak controllers with both PATA and SATA ports. I have no way of testing SATA drives with this patch. Could someone using one of these controllers with SATA drives please patch a kernel and see if everything is still good?
    Bug Report #4770

I'm using sata_promise with a SATA HD. Unfortunately, since Linux 2.6.17 it doesn't want to boot anymore (kernel oops on startup). For now I am using  2.6.15-archck which I still had lying around fortunately, though 2.6.16 also worked for me.
Do you by any chance know about this problem? According to linux changes, this has happened to the promise driver:
    * Add support for the Promise Fasttrak TX4300/TX4310 4-port PCI SATA controllers based on the PDC40719 chip to sata_promise driver (commit)
But that was actually a very minor patch, I guess some other promise/sata related change broke it.

  • Cannot install 10.4.3 on my brand new mini

    Help!
I have a brand-new mac mini OSX 10.4, which is not connected to the internet. It tells me that the HD has 37.1GB, 25.2GB free.
I downloaded the 10.4.3 update onto my 256MB "datakey" (USB flash drive) and tried to install it onto my new mini. When I got to the "Select Destination" stage I was prevented from selecting the HD and the message told me that "Installing requires 292MB of space. You cannot install mac OSX update on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update."
    What's the problem?
And also, do I really need the update at all? I'm not planning to do much at the moment aside from importing music, watching DVDs, and maybe doing some photo editing and word processing.
    Thank you!

Which updater did you download? There are four different 10.43 updaters; one for Mac OS X client, another for Mac OS X Server, plus combo updaters for each of the first two. If you have a client version of Mac OS X 10.4 prior to 10.42 installed, you need the 10.43 combo updater.

If parallel to USB conversion is not successful, I would suggest you to try installing and using HP internal jetdirect card (600, 610, 615, 620 cards should be compatible) through EIO port available with your printer.  This would not enable USB, but network connectivity for printer.
