Try booting into the Safe Mode.  Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once. You can download from the Safe Mode.

About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive.

I agree that VLC is also a good choice but MPlayerX is more user friendly.

  • I have installed OS X Mountain LION and cannot open anymore Microsoft Word or Excel

I have installed OS X Mountain LION on my MacBook Pro 13" and cannot open anymore Microsoft Word or Excel ? Could you help me with this problem? Thank you.

Why suggest "ignore iWork"? I use iWork exclusively now, since dumping MS Office and I like it.
On its own it's fine, as a replacement for Office it's mediocre. Unable to save in Office format you are pushed into exporting (extra steps) simply to create an Office compatible file. Pages barely renders a Word document correctly (a trait also shared by Libre/Open Office). Numbers is a very poor substitute for Excel (the free ones are better).
And for all this you are expected to pay, whereas the other alternatives do a better job (with MS Office files) without a financial insult.
If Office is not in the equation I recommend iWork.

  • Cannot install flash in Mountain Lion

I tried installing the required Flash update in Mountain Lion and it refuses to let me install Flash.
I tried installing it and it sat at 95% for 30 minutes. So I cancelled it and then tried again. It got to 5% and then stalled out and said it failed.
I uninstalled the Flash installation and rebooted trying to install it again and it still wouldn't install.
It now says "Blocked Plug-in" wherever flash is required on the web in SafarI!  It says I have ot update it and I keep trying but it will not let me!
    Any ideas? Help?

I have the same exact problem to some extent. I can install flash all the way, but safari is not recognizing it and saying that I need to update flash (which I already did). It is not blocked in the safari preferences even though it says that it is when I try to play a youtube video. Also this pop-up box keeps appearing:
I did exactly what is says and still no luck. It keeps poping up.

Ok, ressetting the PRAM did the trick for me. I should have read a similar thread about a kernel panic after installing Mountain Lion (https://discussions.apple.com/message/19020046#19020046) :-(
It's now installing the OS. Crossing my fingers!

  • I installed Yosemite from Mountain Lion and my photos have disappeared.  How do I recover?

I installed Yosemite on my iMac (late 2009, storage 8GB, processor 2.8 GHz Intel core i7).  previously using Mountain Lion (10.8.2)  I had stored many photos on iPhoto that weren't on the Cloud.  Now I cannot access these photos.  How do I recover?

Now I cannot access these photos.
You need to update to iPhoto 9.6.1. Only that is fully compatible with MacOS X 10.10.3.
You can no longer buy iPhoto from the App Store anywhere, and also not update it from the "Updates" tab of the App Store. You can however reinstall it, if it is showing among your Purchases at the App Store and associated with your AppleID.
Sign into the App Store and look at the Purchases tab.  If you do not see iPhoto there, try to unhide your Purchases as described on this page:   Hide and unhide purchases in the Mac App Store - Apple Support
If iPhoto shows on your Purchases tab, reinstall as described in this User Tip:
Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS... | Apple Support Communities
The main idea is to move the incompatible iPhoto app to the Trash, so Spotlight does not see it as installed, reload the App Store by pressing ⌘R, and then to try to download again from the App Store - from your Purchases tab, not from the main page, since you can neither buy iPhoto nor update it, but you can reinstall, if your AppleID is associated with it.
So move iPhoto to the Trash (don't empty the Trash), relaunch the App Store. The button to the right if iPhoto should change to Install on the "Purchases" tab.
Alternately, you could migrate your iPhoto library to the new Photos.app.
When you launch Photos, it will try to migrate your iphoto Library, if it can find the library.  Where is your iPhoto Library stored? If it is in your Pictures folder, simply drag the iPhoto Library to the Phots icon in your Dock to migrate it to Photos.
Photos will make a migrated copy, so you still can use your iPhoto Library with iPhoto.

  • I am Installing OS X mountain lion and its frozen while installing

I have been having some problems with my imac for some time now. It kept freezing and crashing. I tried upping the ram and that didn't help. I also ran the fix disk and that didnt help. So I backed everything up and erased the hard drive and attempted to reinstall OS X mountain lion. It downloaded the software fine and restarted and took me to a install screen where it has been stuck on 21min remaining with nothing happening for a long time now ( well over 21min).  Is there anything I can do to get it going and installing?

  • I am currently running Leopard (10.5.8) on my late 2008 iMAC.  I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion and I have been informed that I must first upgrade to Snow Leopard first.  What operating issues could I face after doing this?

Based on user issues I am reading should I even attempt this.  One of my reasons of wanting to upgrade is to have the ability to upgrade to newer versions of certain programs such as Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop.

I've upgraded several Mac from 10.5 to 10.6 and all the installations were trouble-free. However, in an abundance of caution, back up before you start upgrading.
RAM: Most 2008 iMac shipped with 2GB RAM. Your iMac 2008 can use up to 4GB RAM "officially" and up to 6GB with memory modules introduced since Apple's offical specs were engraved in stone. Although 10.6 may do ±OK with 2GB, I suspect Photoshop is glomming on to all you have. Lion10.7 will just barely work with 2GB and 10.8 Mtn Lion may slow to a crawl.
I get all my RAM upgrades here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/Intel_Core_2_Duo_PC2-6400
Never had a problem with any of their RAM and I've been getting it from them for over a decade--and we have 18 Macs in the family!

  • Have installed Mountain Lion and need Java. Help

    Hi,
I installed Mountain Lion this past week.
I am subscribed to two games sites. They both require me to have Java to use them.
I read after I installed ML that there is no Java in this. However, I guess I still had the Apple Java from Snow Leopard.
But, I thought I had to install Java 7 (think at some point I was asked to update Java and it took me to that.
I then read that Chrome can't use the Java I had installed.
So I then tried to use Safari.
Then I picked up FireFox again. I used to have FireFox but had not used it in a while.
Finally managed to get FireFox to run the one site. Quadplex.
However nothing would allow me to use Pogo. I can get to the main page on Pogo, but when I try to activate the games there, it sits and loads and loads and eventually as it SHOULD open it just up and disappears!
Eventually in some of my searching, I read that Java 7 is not secure. That there is a security issue in it.
I searched until I found where I could uninstall Java 7. And I did that. Then I clicked on the link that said I could install the Apple Java that I had managed to get rid of originally (well I assume it is gone since even after a restart, Safari does not let me play anything requiring Java.
I tried to reinstall the Apple Java and got to what I had read was the "terminal". I began to try the commands that were posted on the Apple support page I was on, but it asked for an Administrator Password. To my knowledge I have never had that on my Mac. I usually just click where the window pops up to ask for it and that window goes away and I can install anything without entering any password. But in the "terminal" I tried to just click on the return to go to the next step in the commands routine and it would not allow me to continue.
I am on a MacPro 15" purchased in August 2009 and which has been refurbished due to me having spilled a drink all over the keys area of it in November of 2010. It has been working great until I went ahead and installed Mountain Lion and now have removed the Java download as I read it is not secure and can expose Mac users to something refered to as "drive by" viruses.
I am really at a loss here. The tech I would normally go to may or may not be available this week and I really am frustrated by missing out on my daily gaming.
Any one here who can help with my problem?
    Thanks, Carine (aka catonwheels)

Thanks Baltwo...and yes it did...by the time I got your response (and it was great that you sent it!) I had already FINALLY found that I needed 7u11 and then found THAT! I had tried to find it after reading about it somewhere during my surfing for a solution but couldn't seem to find it and then when I clicked on an update link SOMEWHERE I was taken right to it. I remembered that the original Java I had downloaded did not have 11 in it and so I downloaded the one that was at that link where I was taken and voila! It worked...however, had I NOT found it having you respond to my help plea would have fixed it and I thank you for taking the time. I had gone to Oracle originally to find this update but somehow I did not get it the first time round. So this would have been great had I not fallen over it when I did. Again, thank you and now at least I am in this community and will have a lot of support and info when I need it! :-)

  • I recently downloaded is x mountain lion and while it finished it erased all my data, some of which I need. When using disk utility I found my old data but it says corrupted. I can't repair and while restoring the error code 32 Broken Pipe appears. Help?

My data I need is on my computer but it needs to be repaired but can't and when I try to restore it/back it up it ends abruptly with error code 32 broken pipe.
It was damaged while installing os x mountain lion and I found my data on disk repair (utility)

Sounds like your hard drive is badly corrupted, likely due to problems that were already there when you started trying to install Mountain Lion. The problem is, if you don't have any backups already, you may not be able to recover all your data from this state. Do you have backups of that data already?
If not, I assume when you say that "it needs to be repaired but can't," you mean that Disk Utility tells you there is a problem with the disk, but that it is unable to repair it? If so, you can try repairing the drive using DiskWarrior, which can repair problems that Disk Utility cannot. That may give you access to your data again, but may not.
Also, it's important to understand that if your data is not backed up, everything you do with the computer runs the risk of overwriting or corrupting that data. You may want to go straight to trying to recover your data. See Recovering deleted files.
Regarding the error code, if you're trying to back up the drive using Disk Utility's Restore tab, note that that is often not successful when the drive you're trying to back up is corrupt.
Once the situation is resolved - either because you have backups, are able to recover your data files or are forced to accept that they are gone permanently - you will need to erase the hard drive and reinstall the system and all your apps from scratch.

I`ve just installed OS X Mountain Lion and, out of the blue, it turns out that it is incompatible with Parallels? What options do I have? This just makes no sense!
