Cannot install Pacman? (Arch Linux on PPC, Power Mac G4)

Hi
I'm trying to install PPC Arch on a Power Mac G4
Everything is fine until the point where I need to Install the packages.
It asks me to select another server (There's 3 available), because Pacman apparently cannot download? But the other two seems down.
The error the first one gives: "Error downloading pacman! Try another server."
There's:
1) ftp://ftp.archlinuxppc.org
2) ftp://xentac.net
3) ftp://ftp.archlinuxfr.org
When selecting 2, and 3 it says: "Error fetching package list from server".
Also "INIT: ld "c0" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes"
What do I do?
Thanks in advance

  • Arch Linux on Apple Power Mac G5?

I see that there is a Arch64 group trying to bring Arch to the PPC architecture. It is difficult to determine if this effort is just starting, or perhaps has resulted in a running PPC version.
To the point, does anyone have Arch running on an Apple Power Mac G5?

mac57 wrote:Yup, I have mixed up the two groups, but the Power Mac G5 *is* 64 bit - that is the source of the confusion. I am hearing that we don't have any Power Mac G5 Arch though, which is too bad!
a G5 is still a powerpc so archppc could run on it but i am not quite sure about wether archppc is ready for it out of the box.

Can I install Adobe InDesign CS5 on a Power Mac G5 running OS 10.5.8?

first thing to try is reset InDesign:
delete the preference file located here:
    system > users > home folder > library > peferences > com.adobe.InDesign.plist
    then repair the hard drive:
    shut down the Mac
restart - then press shift key immediately after the chime
keep pressing shift untill the Apple logo appears
let the Mac boot to the desktop - it will take longer to boot as it is repairing the hard drive
when desktop appears, restart the Mac normally

  • [Solved] Cannot ping my Arch linux pc from other devices

My newly installed arch linux pc is connected to my home network via wifi. I can successfully connect to the Internet. Also, I can successfully ping other devices on my network. However, I am unable to connect to my Arch linux pc from any other device on the network. As I said, I cannot even ping it from these other devices.
Does anyone have an idea as to what would cause this?

I switched my Arch box to Dhcp. I thought the problem had resolved, but the issue has come back even with Dhcp enabled. I have isolated the problem to the wireless router. If I refresh Dhcp on the router, I can then ping my Arch box from other devices again. Is there anything I can do to the router to resolve this? Again, the wireless router is an Asus RT-N66U.

  • [SOLVED]Multiple Problems after a new install on Arch Linux

    Hello all,
I just finished installing Arch Linux from the core ISO which I downloaded from the site. The install went smoothly and booted up fine. Also I was able to install gnome and its extras fine as well. On the first boot after installing gnome I managed to get my resolution correct also. However later on after I installed compiz fusion everything with the resolution seems to be going wrong . My computer specs are shown below :
    AMD 64 3200
    Asus M2N MX-SE
    2 GB Ram
    Geforce 8600 GT
Viewsonic VA1918wm (Native resolution is 1440x900)
At the moment I can only manage to get upto 1024x768 and it looks quite bad at that resolution. I have attached the xorg.conf I have at the moment.

While I was trying to fix this I noticed I was encountering other problems also. For one I found that sometimes dhcpcd times out on booting up and I cant seemt o connect to the Internet on booting. Although I just thought of trying a static IP and I'll post if that helped later on.
Another problem is I found that I seem to get the following error randomly. Pressing ctrl + D after this just restarts the machine.
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
    e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
Finally, while I boot up I noticed that it says "Mounting root partition as read only   [DONE]"  Is the root partition supposed ot be mounted as read only ? Attached my fstab just in case it is needed.
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>

    /dev/sdb1 / ext3 defaults 0 1
    /dev/sdb2 swap swap defaults 0 0
    /dev/sdb3 /home ext3 defaults 0 1
As you can see I'm quite new to Arch Linux so any help would be deeply appreciated.

Thank you for all your suggestions . I tried replacing the ID to Card0 but it didnt seem to fix it . However on the bright side I checked more threads on the forum and found some that helped out . :)

    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=72788
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=76938
I copied the xorg.conf file from the third link and just made minor changes to it like removing all the resolutions I didn't need and now its working fine :).
Now Im just stuck with two problems. One is the following message which appears randomly.
    ******************* FILESYSTEM CHECK FAILED *************
    * Please repair manually and reboot. Note that the root *
    * filesystem is currently mounted read-only. To remount *
    * it read-write type: mount -n -o remount,rw / *
    * When you exit the mantenance shel the system will *
    * reboot automatically. *
A thread about the same can be found http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=295384 but there isn't a solution on it.
The second is the intermittent problems with the Network being setup. Sometimes when I boot up it just says dhcpcd timedout and I won't be able to connect . However I can connect on another machine at the same time.
Took a look at the drive in question with gparted and it shows the below information:
    /dev/sdb1 ext3   /   32.59 GB    4.92 GB   27.68 GB  boot
By any chance is any of the above information relevant :x ?

  • Cannot install JMF under Linux Mandrake 10

I simply cannot install JMF under the Mandrake 10 Official Linux distribution. I downloaded the jmf-2_1_1e-linux-i586.bin file and tried to execute it as root. It unzipped some files then showed me an error message about AWT and GTK+. I found a hack consisting of modifying the .bin file to have the PATH variable point to SUN JDK, the error does not show up, but the installation still does not work. In fact, the installation works, but the Diagnostics applet keeps telling me than class files are not present. My Mozilla 1.6 Java plugin is working and displaying the applet. My JMF lib directory does not contain sound.jar, such jmf.jar. I set the CLASSPATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH according to the readme.html file. I would like to know if it is a compatibility problem with Mandrake 10, the 2.6 kernel or if JMF just DO NO work under Linux. In the latter case, JMF is a violation to the Java portability philosophy and I would never use it on my own initiative, just if I were asked to.
After the files are unzipped, I have the following warning and error messages.
    Warning:
    Name: HorScrollBar
    Class: XmScrollBar
The specified scrollbar value is greater than the maximum
scrollbar value minus the scrollbar slider size.

    java.lang.Error: Can't open video card 7
    java.lang.Error: Can't open video card 8
    java.lang.Error: Can't open video card 9
    Done.
Even if I do not have a working video capture card (I have an ATI All-in-Wonder 128 but it is not working under 2.6 kernel), JMF should work because some people do not have a video capture card. I also tried with the cross-platform ZIP file, but this one does not contain sound.jar either and the Diagnostics applet keeps complaining about missing class files. I tried to search on the Web for solutions to this problem or for a way to change the CLASSPATH used by the Mozilla Java plug-in (if it uses a different CLASSPATH than the one from the environment variable), but nothing, nothing. Is there a distribution from which JMF would work better than Mandrake 10? Or can JMF work only under Microsoft Windows or Sun Solaris? I also tried Blackdown, but a README file directed me to the Sun's page, nothing to download here about JMF.

well, your not the only one.
I have it working in Debian, and JDS.(JMF is setup automatically in JDS).(2.6.6 kernel)
I looked at the installation structure of JDS, and was able to duplicate what they did for Debian.
Maybe it will work for Mandrake two??
ok, all you have to do is copy or create soft links from your Mozilla directory, just like you did with the java plugin, and link to all the *.so files in JMF-2.1.1e/lib directory.
    Should work.
I also read that not haveing the native files only matters if you are doing Capture. not play.
to get your ATI All-in-Wonder 128 to work, make sure you install the correct driver, and have it working under linux, then try it in JMSTUDIO

Linux Fedora Core 5, I've made "yum update" so I suppouse that everyting it's updated by now.
    J2SDK:
    jdk-1_5_0_06-linux-1586.rpm
I've setup JAVA_HOME so if i type "java -version" responds wtih the appropiate string: java version "1.5.0_06"
Java(TM) 2 Run Time Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_06-b05)
I've installed succesfully Java Studio Enterprise 8 and seams to work fine, just did a new jsp and click on run, starts the web browser (mozilla) and appears the adequate page.
But when I try to install creator-2_1-linux-ml.bin the installer responds:
"This application requires a Java Run Time Environment (JRE) to run. Searching for one on your computer was not successful. Please use the command line switch -is:javahome to specify a valid JRE. For more help use the option -is:help."
    And that's all.
With or with out the switch it still not working.
Weird!!!, why is Java Studio Enterprise Working any way?
Am I using the adequate jdk?
Doesn't have the rpm package a jre bundled, why don't the package use their own jre?
I almost forgot, I uninstall all the java packages on my sistem an only reinstale the refered rpm, i hope all the other apps still work.

My G5's hard drive was wiped clean, and I went out and bought OSx 10.3 Panther. I have been trying to install it on my G5 for quite some time now. Every time I boot the computer it comes up with a gray screen with the apple logo in the center. It sits like that for a minute or so then switches to a screen with a circle with a diagonal line through it. I have tried booting while holding control c, the same thing happens. I have tried booting while holding the option key. This brings up a new screen with the name of the disk on it and two arrow buttons. One seems to restart the disk, and clicking the other sends it to the screen with the circle on it.
Any ideas on what I could try to do to get it to install?

    Yes, G5s can run 10.4 or 10.5
Depends which G5 you have as to whether that Disc will work, earliest G5/1.6 came with 10.2.7, last ones came with 10.4.2 & would not be able to boot/install from any 10.3 Disc.
As far as I can tell, that is the Retail version 10.3.3, & for instance the PCI-X G5s came with 10.3.4, so not likely to boot from it either.

I really need some help, I need to update my Power Mac G5 because I discover that almost every single new upgrade for Final Cut Pro is for Intel Macs, so i would like to know if it is possible to install this processor to my oldie computer or can I upgrade my panther system to a leopard and being able to run the new programs??'. You can't install an Intel processor in your G5. For Intel you need to buy a new/newer Mac.
Here's the *Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installation system requirements*
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24950 To upgrade, you can skip Tiger 10.4.
Recommend you increase RAM more than the minimum.
