  • Disk Access Failed while Installing Solaris Container.

I have setup 5 guest domains together with the Control Domain.
    $ ldm list

    primary active -t-cv SP 4 4G 0.8% 2d 2h 15m
    secondary active -t--v 5000 4 2G 0.5% 3h 5m

    sunray inactive -----
    application inactive -----
    identity active -t--- 5002 4 4G 0.1% 1h 2m
In each of the guest domain, I plan to install a number of Solaris Containers to run different applications. While installing one Solaris container (zoneadm z <zone name> install) in dmz domain, I start the installation/configuration (either zoneadm z <zone name> install or zlogin C <zone name>) of another Solaris container in identity domain. Everything starts OK until half way I get an error message as follow:
Jun 13 18:33:16 dmz vdc: NOTICE: [1] disk access failed.
The installation of the Solaris Container in dmz halts as soon as I see the message above. Nothing will work except a force stop in the Control Domain using ldm stop f dmz and restart.
What happen to the Solaris Container installation/configuration in identity domain? It either continues the process without error or fails with the same error message shortly after. For example,
Jun 13 18:33:24 identity vdc: NOTICE: [1] disk access failed.
The vdisks for each guest domain are setup by following the steps on section Using ZFS Over a Virtual Disk in LDoms 1.0 Administration Guide. Each guest domain is booted from a disk image in the Control Domain and has two 9GB data vdisks (mapped to two physical 9GB disks on A5200 disk array) running ZFS striping. Each guest domain vdisks are serviced by a separate vdisk server.
    Any idea?

I am not sure if multiple virtual disk servers are officially supported under current LDoms release.
I had tried using only one virtual disk server. The same problem exhibited. I thought may be the vds was not able to keep up with the virtual disk I/O. That's why I setup multiple vds.

Thanks inadvanceIf memory serves Solaris 10 requires 512MB minimum but I wouldn't run it on less than 1GB.
I haven't noticed any inconsistencies with grub on the machines I've built.

  • Cannot install solaris 10 on x2100

    Hi,
I've been trying to install Solaris 10 on X2100M2 remotely.
This is as far as I can get:
Connect to the ELOM (through net management).
    Connect to the console.
    Reboot the server.
Able to see the system booting into the DVD.
During the selection for Solaris, Solaris -ttya Solaris-ttyb, I tried selecting each one of them, but I cannot get any further.
I see the cursor at the top of the console screen moving (as if to print the ......)
and then it gets stuck. Generally at that point I lose network connection as well.
How come I do not see any console output past this point?
Is it going to the Serial port?

Had to resort to installing the server by using the GUI console.
If you open the browser to the IP address of the ILOM,
you are able to view a system console (Java applet).
Using that applet you are able to install the server.
Not the desired solution, but it worked.
Couldn't figure out why you cannot view the system output in the ILOM console.
Also after a certain point in the Solaris install, you will lose network connection to the ILOM.
You might have to reconnect to the server a few times during the install.
x4200 are a bit better than this.

  • Cannot Install Solaris 10 8/07 on HP Laptop

I'm trying to install Solaris on a laptop (HP dv5040us (2.2Ghz AMD Turion, 2GB Ram)), and here's what I've done so far:
    Downloaded Solaris 10 (sol-10-u4-ga-x86-dvd.iso) from Sun.com.
    Did the checksum and passed.
Burned to DVD and finalized (using Roxio). Did checksum again and passed.
I've ensured that the CD drive is first in the boot sequence.
But when I boot (power on or restart) nothing happens -- it just keeps booting up Windows on the hard drive. I've even disabled the hard drive once to force it to boot from CD, but nothing happens. Is the disk supposed to be bootable with the iso file alone? Sun installation instructions and related topics are pretty straight forward and do not mention anything other than what I've already done -- download, burn to cd(dvd), and boot from cd-rom. What am I missing? I want to replace Windows with Solaris on this laptop, so I'm not trying to set up a multi-boot. Help!

have you burn it as image or just put file on the disk?
You need to do it as image to have bootable CD/DVD

  • Cannot install Solaris 10 on VirtualBox

Hi all, I've downloaded and installed VirtualBox 2.0.2 on Vista HP x64 and I'm trying to install Solaris 10 on it so I can practice scripting and admin tasks. When I boot from the dvd image all I get is the Grub> prompt with no menu. I've chosen to download the single DVD file which is suspiciously small at 2,154MB.
When I try and go to the multipart DVD downloads, I get a page not found error. The link I've been trying is: https://cds-edit.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/CDS-CDS_SMI-Site/en_US/-/USD/ViewProductDetail-Start?ProductRef=Sol10-U5-SP-x86-SEG-DVD-G-F@CDS-CDS_SMI
Can anyone tell me what I need to do next, or shall I just wait for 10/08 to come out?
    Thanks.
    Andy

I am also trying to perform a Solaris10-508 install on a Vista OS via VirtualBox
I'm running Vista Ultimate, so my system may not match yours.
I am using the All-In-One DVD image
I installed VirtualBox 2.0.2 and created a default Solaris VDI:
    512MB memory + 16G dynamic VDI
Set the new machine's CD drive to mount the ISO image, and set
Hard Drive as the first Boot device, then CD .... I don't have a floppy,
so I've disabled it in the boot order.
Open Windows task manager and look for VboxSVC.exe ...
change it's priority to "below normal".
(Until I did that, my systems were unresponsive -- both host and guest --
and the installation froze at 10%)
go back to VirtualBox and start your new machine.
Because there is no OS installed, it should boot from the DVD
I just let it run with all the defaults as this is the first time I've
    installed / used Solaris.
As at time of writing this, installation is progressing nicely and up to
    25%

  • Cannot install solaris 8 for intel

i boot a machine which has a AIC 7899 card using install CD,
then choose add driver using a floppy made by downloaded
ultra160 driver floppy image. the SCSI card and a hard drive
thus can be found and i make two partitions, about 1G and 5G
respectively, a swap space about 8G(my machine has 1G
RAM, 17G hard drive, PIII 1000MHz). it all seems ok. but after
it copys files to disk and prepare to reboot it reports "waning:
/temp: file system full, swap space limit exceed...............
warning:no swap space to grow stack......" then it returns to
command line and just stops there. if i reboot using init 6 the
machine cannot boot from the boot partition saying cannot find boot.bin. in addition, every time i create partitions and reboot, there will be another small active boot partition. besides, the sum of the space of two partitions and the swap space seems to be larger than the disk space. so, that's what i meet with. can someone give me a hand?
    thanks
    james

You should be using the partition utility that runs during the install. This is easiest. Make sure you have a large swap space. Usually swap space is about 2 time larger than total RAM. But in your case, you may not want it that large.
If you are using only solaris on the computer, then format the entire hard drive as a solaris drive.
Then you can split up the drive into partitions, and here is where you can decide swap disk space.
During the install, when it asks you:
say yes to all loyout file systems on disks
partition the disk in the following manner
    (just a suggestion)
    swap
    /usr
    /usr/local
    /var
    /opt
    /tmp
/export/home (The rest of the HD)
    Hope that helps,
    ~James

  • Cannot install Solaris 10 10/09 on Dell T310

Dell T310 with KVM, install does not recognize pci:
    WARNING: hubdi: cannot attach /pci@0, 0/pci1028, 2a4@ld/hub@1
as a result once the installer get to the graphics page requesting keyboard type, nothing works. I'm relatively new to newer versions of Solaris. Am I missing something or is there a work around? I've searched the 'net, no luck. Sun HCL says that this box is supported.
Thanks for any help or directions.

1950's and 2950's work well in Solairs 10.
You'll need Solairs U3 at least as it has an updated mpt driver for the newer LSI 1680. The networking however is not included. There are two ways to install then:
    1. Install without network, download driver and add from cd after system is up and running.
    2. Install using a ITU cd image.
Alternately if you have a Jumpstart server, use Solaris U3 and rebuild the x86.miniroot with the Broadcom driver built in ;)

well, this ought to have been mentioned in Release Notes, but instead its thoroghly documented in  the Install Guid.
For the release version of Solaris 11.2, you need to replace the sunpro-incorporation, messy.

To see if your laptop is capable of running Solaris you have 2 options. Either try it out and see if it works or check the hardware compatibility list at http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/.
As to your common installation issues I'd suggest paying some attention to this website: http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/coll/1236.1.

This server was up & running and we were trying to remove a hard disk that had failed and modified the vfstab script . After that the system failed to even boot up. So when we tried reinstalling the OS we are running into this problem.
Am new to this technology ...And any help would be greatly appreciated. .....
    Thanks

Cdrom drive must be scsi device 6
I assume you are running < boot cdrom> at the ok prompt
also at the ok prompt run the command <probe-scsi> (without the angled brackets) you need to see the following:
    Target 6
Unit 0 Removable read only device TOSHIBA XM.......bigpileofnumbers
If not, check the cdrom drive and the cdrom inside
    hope this helps
    Alan

  • Cannot install JMF under Linux Mandrake 10

I simply cannot install JMF under the Mandrake 10 Official Linux distribution. I downloaded the jmf-2_1_1e-linux-i586.bin file and tried to execute it as root. It unzipped some files then showed me an error message about AWT and GTK+. I found a hack consisting of modifying the .bin file to have the PATH variable point to SUN JDK, the error does not show up, but the installation still does not work. In fact, the installation works, but the Diagnostics applet keeps telling me than class files are not present. My Mozilla 1.6 Java plugin is working and displaying the applet. My JMF lib directory does not contain sound.jar, such jmf.jar. I set the CLASSPATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH according to the readme.html file. I would like to know if it is a compatibility problem with Mandrake 10, the 2.6 kernel or if JMF just DO NO work under Linux. In the latter case, JMF is a violation to the Java portability philosophy and I would never use it on my own initiative, just if I were asked to.
After the files are unzipped, I have the following warning and error messages.
    Warning:

scrollbar value minus the scrollbar slider size.

    Done.
Even if I do not have a working video capture card (I have an ATI All-in-Wonder 128 but it is not working under 2.6 kernel), JMF should work because some people do not have a video capture card. I also tried with the cross-platform ZIP file, but this one does not contain sound.jar either and the Diagnostics applet keeps complaining about missing class files. I tried to search on the Web for solutions to this problem or for a way to change the CLASSPATH used by the Mozilla Java plug-in (if it uses a different CLASSPATH than the one from the environment variable), but nothing, nothing. Is there a distribution from which JMF would work better than Mandrake 10? Or can JMF work only under Microsoft Windows or Sun Solaris? I also tried Blackdown, but a README file directed me to the Sun's page, nothing to download here about JMF.

well, your not the only one.
I have it working in Debian, and JDS.(JMF is setup automatically in JDS).(2.6.6 kernel)
I looked at the installation structure of JDS, and was able to duplicate what they did for Debian.
Maybe it will work for Mandrake two??
ok, all you have to do is copy or create soft links from your Mozilla directory, just like you did with the java plugin, and link to all the *.so files in JMF-2.1.1e/lib directory.
    Should work.
I also read that not haveing the native files only matters if you are doing Capture. not play.
to get your ATI All-in-Wonder 128 to work, make sure you install the correct driver, and have it working under linux, then try it in JMSTUDIO
