Tiger Requirements...
To use Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, your Macintosh needs:
    * A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
    * Built-in FireWire
    * At least 256 MB of RAM (I recommend 1GB minimum)
    * DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation
    * At least 3 GB of free disk space; 4 GB if you install the XCode 2 Developer Tools  (I recommend 20GB minimum)

  • Installing tiger over os 10.0.2 and os 9.2

i'm really confused about this because i have had several different opinions about what will happen to my existing os's when i install tiger. to make sure i've been told correctly before i screw something up. the thing is, i need to keep os 9 on my computer because all of my graphic programs work with it (illust. photoshop, etc.) if i install tiger over this, will i not be able to use os 9, or switch to it in the start up disk and reboot?
is it true that i can't use the 'upgrade' feature because it only works with os 10.2 and up? would this be the safest option for me, so should i purchase the 10.2 upgrade and install the tiger upgrade from there? if so, where can i find the 10.2 upgrade?
re: archive and install feature...would i need at least the 10.2 operating system, too? if it archives your older os, can you ever reboot in an older os? if not, can you easily access the older os 9 to use the graphics files? any known complications of reading older files created in os 9 after the install of tiger?
sorry to sound so stupid about these things, but i'm a designer and therefore technically challenged! thanks for your help!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You are correct in that Archive and Install is only available for OS X 10.2 and later.
To install Tiger your computer will need to meet the minimum system requirements for Tiger.
You will also need to purchase the Full Retail version of Tiger.
Be aware that Computer specific or upgrade versions should be avoided as they can cause problems. Besides, it may be a violation of the Software License Agreement which statesThis License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time...
This is how I would go about accomplishing what you want to do:
    1. I would backup my entire HDD to an external FireWire Hard Disk Drive.
    2. Then I would completely wipe the HDD and reinstall beginning with OS 9 then Tiger.
    3. Then I would move back my data and third party apps from my backup.
Please post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • How to install Tiger OVER Leopard?

    Hi everyone,
So i just bought the brand spanking new Macbook Pros from the apple dealer the other day. I must say that i like it alot, but it came pre-installed with Leopard 10.5.
Now dont get me wrong, 10.5 is wonderful but i dont think i am ready for it yet because none of my programs that i use are compatible with it. As a result, i have a great computer with no programs to run.
I have decided i want to reinstall 10.4 back onto my harddrive and wipe out Leopard. I couldnt find anywhere in the apple shop that sold 10.4 (most likely because they are trying to phase it out), but i did find a copy of the Tiger installation disc that came with the PowerMac G5 (pre-intel) a few years ago.
I tried installing it, but it said "this program cannot be installed on this operating software". I basically just inserted the CD and double clicked "install" but i have a feeling the only way to get around this is to boot up the installation disc as a bootable disc, which i dont know how to do.
I have two quick questions for the seasoned veterans out there:
    1) How do i install Tiger over my Leopard?
    2) This is my first time using an Apple that is intel chip. Does Tiger have any complications with it?
Thanks so much guys, i really look forward to your responses.
    P.

You will have to contact AppleCare to obtain the Tiger installation discs required for your model. You cannot use a retail Tiger installation DVD or one from any PPC model. They will not work.
You might check with the software developers of your software to see if Leopard compatible versions aren't already available. Otherwise you might look for similar software that is compatible.
Most PPC-only software will run on Intel Macs via Rosetta emulation automatically.
If you do obtain the proper Tiger installation discs from AppleCare and decide to install it, then you will need to do an Archive and Install:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger, 4.6.2 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

How do I install the iOS 4.3 on my iPhone 3GS ? I've tried direct links but they it says safari cannot install this ? Please help !

You can not install anything but the current version of iOS. If you have a 3Gs, then you can install 6.0.1 by plugging it into your computer running iTunes (10.7 or higher).  If you have a 3G, 4.2.1 is the end of the line.

  • I'm desperated, cannot install os x, please help

First of all I want to apologize for my english, I´m from Spain.
The matter is I`ve 2 macs, one Macbook core duo 1.83ghz and now I´ve bought another macbook corre 2 duo 2ghz, the black one. The last one I bought of second hand and the guy doesn´t gave me any installation CD.
I have tried to install OS X from the dvd set of the other macbook but I always get the error "this software cannot be installed in this computer", I`ve called Apple and they sayed to me that it´s right, this version cannot be installed onto my computer, so I asked them to buy a retail version of Tiger, but the problem is that the version bundled with my mac is suppossed to be 10.4.8 and in the shops you can only buy 10.4.6, so they told me it´ll not work either.
I´ve tried a copy from a friend this one doesn´t even boot, I don´t have the option to install it, like if it was a music CD...
I´ll appreciate any help, thank you.

As long as you have the systems minimum rev level software that can be installed, say OS9.0, OS9.1, or OS10 to start with you should not need a full set of disks UNLESS YOUR FIRMWARE is not up to date. These updates are in each Utility folder on disc. The system will tell you what is required or not. Start with the LOWEST OS the unit will work with, load OS, then check the Utility folder for updates for your specific machine. STAY in that OS and then load in next revision OS disc and look for relevant updates and so on......If you want to go to Tiger OS 10.4.6 and then update, and you do not need firmware
updates, then all you need is the earliest version useable on your unit, load it, then install Tiger.....Tiger is usually priced at $129 here but I"m sure you might find it cheaper by a few dollars...Try MEGAMACS , OWC, newegg for instance online for a better price...I do not know if they will ship to your country and the costs........Goood luck

  • CanNOT install Tiger on New Quad. What version of Logic is most reliable??

I've read all the posts to death, and fully intended to install Tiger onto my new Quad, but that is not an option. so... It came with Leopard 10.5.1. I need to know what exact configuration with the most stability I should go with. i.e. -- do i stay at 10.5.1 or go to 10.5.2 --- i have every upgrade of Logic since 6.0, so do I go with 7.2.3, or Logic 8.??, or something else.
I am interested in what is the 'lesser evil' of a combination here and trying to stay off as much issues as some of you more unfortunate souls.
and lastly, in this equation what other update should i definitely do, or avoid like the plague...i.e. pro kit, pro apps, security update blah, blah, blah...I do video editing as well, so i wonder if my Final Cut Studio 2 will even come in to play in the equation.
I am really sorry for all who have been screwed over by all these completely evil 'bugs' and such. i really welcome any of your input if it means it can lessen the blow on my own studio.
    Thanks,
    Jeremy

    o.k.
i have come to believe that you have been completely misguided. there is absolutely no way my new Quad or Macbkpro will run tiger 10.4.11...no way!!!
i took both an internal, and an external drive to my old Tiger running G5. Did fresh installs of tiger on both. then did combo upgrades up to 10.4.4 ( cause it would not do any higher and do the intel version from the G5 ). I brought the drives back to my new Laptop and Quad. updated the software on them up to 10.4.11 intel combo. stuck one drive into the quad, and left one for an external scenerio. I have booted, rebooted, target disc mode, chose boot drive mode, prayed, cried, switched start up drive... even switched the roles and tried to do it with the MacBkPro, also. what i get, from either one, every single time, is the following....
the great black curtain of death saying to do a hard reboot, and code at the top saying stuff like
"panic(cpu 0 caller 0x003abd33) : Unable to find driver for this platform: "ACPI" . "
then some stuff about... debugger called...<panic>...backtrace, format - frame : return address (4 potential args on stack)....jibberish code junk.... then Kernal Version: Darwin kernal version 8.11.1...
so, please, be my kind Italian friend and tell me, are you SUUURE this is possible??? if you know a special secret to accomplishing this, you can reach me through my site. ( i don't want to do or say anything on the forums that would be wrong or against the rules... really...i respect them...I also respect my tons of paying clients that are ready to find other places to give my business...)
and lastly, if indeed I am "stuck" with Leopard on my Quad, in regards to Logic, what combination do I go with in juggling 10.5.1 vs. 10.5.2, vs. Logic 7.2.3 vs. Logic 8.?, then what other random stuff should I do or avoid, i.e. ProApps updates, Pro-kit, certain security updates, etc...
    Thank you,
    jeremy

  • Cannot install Tiger on new hard drive ???!!!

I bought a Samsung 250GB hard drive from MCE Technologies and had it installed by an authorized "Mac Repair Center". When I then tried to install Tiger from the OSX install discs that came with my MacBook Pro, I got the error when trying to select the hard drive: "Cannot install OSX on this volume. OSX cannot be booted from this volume."
I then booted the computer using my old hard drive connected via USB2 and used SuperDuper to copy all its content to the new internal hard drive and made it bootable. Now the computer is able to boot using the new hard drive. It seems rater slow though (not just booting but also working afterwards) and I cannot install Bootcamp. It gives me an error that I should reformat this hard drive and reinstall Osx, which is exactly what I can't do. Does anyone have an idea why my original MacBook Pro OSX Install Disc doesn't work anymore (I assume altered computer configuration...) and how I could do a fresh install of OSX onto the new hard drive anyway ?
Thanks a lot for your help!!

When I then tried to install
Tiger from the OSX install discs that came with my
MacBook Pro, I got the error when trying to select
the hard drive: "Cannot install OSX on this volume.
OSX cannot be booted from this volume."
At this point, I would have recommended that you run Disk Utility from the installation disk and reformat the drive as Mac Extended (Journaled).
Open Disk Utility, click on the name of your drive to the left and check the format at the bottom. What does it say?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
A couple of questions for you if I may:
What colour install DVD are you using?
    Do you have a CD-RW or a DVD-ROM drive?

  • Cannot Install CS4.  Please Help!!

I downloaded a 10 segment CS4 package from my university software site.  My download window shows all parts were downloaded sucessfully but I cannot install.  Bear with me, I'm still in computer "tech" learning and lingo.  They are all .dmg extenstions.  When I try to open, say, part 1, there is a warning saying "no mountable file systems".  Try to open part 2, and warning says "missing parts 1,3, 9" though they are present.  I ran Adobe Support Advisor and it said that I needed to update a certain font, but wouldn't tell me which one.  I ran the download through Firefox, if that matters.  I looked through their support forums and found no help.  Can someone please help??  I've spent hours trying to install this.  I'm about ready to give up and scrap it, but I really need some of the Suite, especiallly Illustrator.

  • Best way to install Tiger over 9.1

My sister has a slot loading iMac 400 with 9.1 installed. It has the Firmware 4.1.9. The problem is she has files from Appleworks scattered about in different locations, pictures saved as attachments in Eudora & just a general mess. Ideally, I'd like to do an Erase & Install, but she'd lose to much. Is it a good or bad idea to leave 9 on there & install Tiger or is there a better way. She only has a 20GB HD. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hello Joe,
    Thanks for the reply.
    1) Should I upgrade to the latest 9.2.2 first
Yes I would I have found that 9.2.2 is a more stable environment
    2) She has a retail Tiger DVD,
I installed Jag by simply inserting the disc and do a basic install. The computer will create a new OS system right on the HD. The great thing is she will then be able to select if she wants to boot into 9 or X. This will allow her to use the computer as if there were no changes but she will also be able to boot to X. Once she boots into X she can get used to using the new OS. When she is in X if she tries to open an existing file that was created in 9, the machine goes into a "classic mode" and will allow her to work on the file. It is as if she is using 9 and X and the same time.
I must admit that I often boot into 9 and run the computer as it was. We must realize that sooner or later most people will have to use X. I find that certain web-sites won't support 9 any more. So to me having both systems is the best of both worlds.
Just insert the DVD and follow the prompts. It is really easy.
Another hint. Take A screen shot of your TCP/IP and /or Internet settings. I find that having these numbers and info will help when you set up X for the internet. If unsure how to do this....use the following 3 keys
"shift apple 3 " or shift apple 4. This will take a picture of the settings. As you probably know...the settings I am talking about are found under the apple. Go under the apple to control panels...then to internet and/or....internet.
This will help you when you set up for the new OS.
Any other questions...post back.......Go for it....She'll like it. Eventually she can upgrade the computer if needed......Take Care......mGb.......Jim

  • Wont let me install tiger on panther on the hard drive

    Hello,
I recently obtained a 14" 800mhz ibook g3 with 256 mb of ram from a friend. The reason that they gave it to me in the first place becuase the hard drive crashed and they never bothered fix it. When I got I turned it on, the drive spun up then the computer shut down. I inserted a tiger install cd from my imac g5 and booted from the disk. When the installer ran it told me that tiger could not be installed on this disk. I went to disk utility and tried to repair the disk and it failed every time, erased it, partitioned it, tried everything. I finally convinced my self that the hd was shot. So I went out and bought a 60gb notebook hard drive and installed it myself. Once installed I booted from the tiger cd and ran the installer. It told me that the software was not able to be installed on this computer. I dont know why is said that it the computer seems to meet the specs of tiger. Well I also tried to install panther, when I ran the installer and got to the drive selection screen there was my new hard drive but there was a red stop sign with an exclimation mark on the bottom right and corner of the drive icon. Becuase of this it would not let me continue. I ran disk utility and repaired and everything. I am stumped. Please help me. I am also not sure what version of osx is on there because the owner does not know.
    Again the machine is a...

Edit... Today I when ibook beeped three times when I started it up. After reading some of the apple docs, I learning how thought that it had something do to with the ram. I took it out and then placed it back in. Ran the installer and panther is currently installing!

    Hi, Peter.
Are you sure you have the hard drive set as master? There are jumper settings for the hard drive that may not be set correctly.

  • IMac G5, cannot install OS X-Pro help needed

Hi, i have an iMac G5, a broken internal CD/DVD, the original OS X cd (10.0.3), firwire is OK, external Lacie firewire DVD is OK. I cannot get the iMac to recognise the OS X install CD. It recognises a Panther CD. I used a iBook and firewire to set up the new hard disk. I then used the restore finction on the iBook to write the 10.0.3 to the new hard drive as a restore action. Booted up the iMac G5 and just the question mark, nothing!. Have tried so many variables and different combinations over the last 4 days. Ive looked up loads of stuff on the tinternet and tries to be creative but no go. Anyone got any ideas? I thought maybe an image would work but how do I install an image without an OS on the hard disk already, can I do it from OpenFirmware?
    Here is summary of test
. used original 10.0.3 cd with external Lacie firewire DVD/CD drive-cd not recognised when using 'alt' key
. used Panther cd with external Lacie firewire DVD/CD drive-nothing-iMac recognises it but will not let me install-I guess because it does not match the iMac
. used disk utility from iBook and target mode on iMac to action restore using 10.0.3 as source, new hard disk (320GB partitioned into 3) as target, iMac does not boot
. old hard disk was unserviceable, reclaimed data and it was thrown away
. put 10.0.3 cd into iBook cd drive, firewire link, used target mode on iBook and alt key on iMac to use iBook cd drive as source, CD not recognised.
. anyone got a 10.0.3 image or CD I can ftp down?

Phil, Welcome to the discussion area!
...the original OS X cd (10.0.3)...
Is this a typo? None of the iMac G5s came with OS 10.0.3. The first iMac G5s came with OS 10.3.5. The iMac G5 will NOT recognize any OS earlier than the one that shipped with it.
. anyone got a 10.0.3 image or CD I can ftp down?
No and you would get to meet Apple's lawyers up and personal if you did.

  • Install tiger over leopard?

I have an iMac G5 with 2 gigs of ram and have noticed a very slow OS after installing Leopard (archive and install) over Tiger 10.4.10. I would like to just go back to Tiger and forget about Leopard, but is there a direct way to go back to Tiger without an erase and install?
I used Super Duper to create a backup before installing Leopard; and I have all the important stuff like iPhoto, iTunes, docs, etc. on a second (separate) backup.
Should I try an erase and install of Leopard, wait for OS 10.5.1, or just go back to Tiger?
    Thanks for any help

Look your computer is running slow because like most people your computer did not have proper maintenance prior to to installing Leopard. A computer is like your car it needs maintenance. Now that you have already installed Leopard, it is best to what until the three maintenance programs update for Leopard They are Cocktail, TechTools Pro and DiskWarrior. You may try running the Apple Disk Utility from your Leopard start up disk. In the utility highlight your hard drive and click on the Repair Disk button. This many help you for the time being. You should always have a second backup hard drive with a Full Mac OS system installed on it. You will install the maintance software on both your main hard drive and your backup drive, When you see a problem with your computer you switch to the backup hard and run the maintenance programs on your main hard drive. I have been working on the Mac for 22 year. Good luck!

  • Since updating my computer i cannot install or open itunes, help!!!

Since updating important installations on my computer i cannot open itunes. I unistalled it after hours of trying and now i can even install the software. very frustrated and confused can anyone help??

    Hi adora,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
.exe are Windows programs. You need programs written for OS X. Most will be .dmg files (disk image) and will mount on the desktop just like a hard drive. With most you just drag the applications icon to your applications folder. Others need Stuffit Expander to decompress the file before installation.

This same message appeared with all the applications in CS3. I called customer support, they said my license is fine and to uninstall the reinstall.
