Cannot launch iPhoto on MBA
First off, I am a total OSX noob, I'll try to include all the relevent info. This was a BNIB purchase of a MBA mid 2011 from Best Buy, so it came pre-installed w/ all of the iLife apps. Recently, the 9.2.3 (I think) update for iPhoto & GarageBand was showing up in the software update window, but whenever I tried to update them, I was told via Apple that I was signed in w/ the wrong AppleID. I signed in w/ every ID I've had and none of them worked. One suggestion was to remove iPhoto and re-install, whch I did, but now iPhoto won't launch. I am getting an error stating "iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem. Here are the details of the error. I changed the text to RED for the area that I think is the issue, but I have no idea how to solve this. Any help is appreciated.

To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

Was doing a drag & drop from iphoto 11, now I cannot launch the app. Iphoto shows up in menu bar but cannot access anything. help!!!
Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101. -
Cannot launch Iphoto Diet, need basic help
In trying to rid myself of massive amounts of duplicate photos, I read to try the free Iphoto Diet. The directions of the website ask you to click on the icon to "launch" the program. I assume they are talking about the image to the right at the beginning. When I click on it, though, nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?
Hi mkmarshall,
I am confused as to what you are saying. You downloaded the program. Then you dragged the icon in the mounted image to the applications folder. Once in the application folder you double click the iPhot Diet application icon to launch the program. Is this what you did? -
Why cannot I launch iPhoto - it immediately crashes?
Some time ago I had to put my iPhoto library on to a Seagate external drive to create more memory on my hard drive. Had no problems until today. Whenever I try to launch iPhoto I get this message:- "The application “iPhoto” unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows. Do you want to try to restore its windows again?" When asking it to do so it quits. Appreciate any help I can get!

i cannot open iphoto- the message I am getting says Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command-
I tries and it doesnt work!!What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Cannot open iPhoto after creating 2 libraries, one in iCloud drive
I am running into errors and cannot open iPhoto anymore. The first message is "The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it. iPhoto can try to repair the permissions." I choose repair, and then this second message occurs, "The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it."
This began after I exported the library on my Mac Book Pro to iCloud Drive, and currently have 2 libraries that I cannot access. I attempted to repair disk from Disk Utilities, but it has not fixed the issue. What can I do next?Try the following on the one on your hard drive:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
2 - run Option #4, Rebuild Database. -
I cannot update IPhoto or IMovie- Error message from App Store
Hi there-
I cannot update IPhoto or IMovie. I have the latest OS. I cannot use these Apps either- they both ask me to update to the newest version, but when I try to I get an error message saying that the App store could not complete my request and to please try again later (null). Any ideas??Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select
/var/log ▹ appstore.log
from the hierarchical list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Then select the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, click the Clear Display button in the toolbar of the Console window and then try the installation again.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting. -
I have updated to snow leopard and I cannot get iPhoto to work or find anywhere to download the appropriate version. I have 8.1.2 but it will not open. What do I need to do?
Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database
LN -
anyone have any clues about this? I backed up my iphoto library last november. Now i would like to open it up and use some of those images. but when i plug in my external HD and try to open the iphoto library, all that happens is it opens my current iphoto library. i know all of my images are on the HD bc i can control click the iphoto library in the HD and click 'show ackage contents' and all images are there. plus the amount of space is correct. I do not understand why i cannot pull up the images??? any help would be greatly appreciated there has to be an explination, as well as a better way to retrieve all those images other than dragging each file indivdually and resaving it back to the computer.
The way to switch default libraries in iPhoto is to depress the option key and launch iPhoto - use the select library command to switch to a new default library which will remain the library until you switch again
And note that if you make changes to your backup library it no longer a backup but a different library

i currently use a iMac OS X 10.6.8 and I cannot open iPhoto. Every time I click on iPhoto the coloured wheel comes up and lets me go no further, leaving me with no other option but to force quit the application.
it is showing all my existing photos but will not let me click on any of them, nor will it allow me to import any new photos into iPhoto.
I am really worried that I cannot access all of my photos and even more worried as I need to back them up!!
HELP!!Try repair the Library:

Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with
Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Front Row won't launch iPhoto, no black menu
I just got my new Intel iMac. All works great but not the Front Row's photo show. When I press Photos on the rotating desktop, the menu just fades and shows Desktop. No error message, just desktop.
I deleted iPhoto, re-installed it (v. 6.0). Does not work. I updated it and Front Row to the latest versions, not working. I repaired permissions. Does not help.
If I manually open iPhoto, I can then launch the slideshow by using remote. And iPhoto works fine by itself. Problem seems to be that Front Row cannot launch the black FR menu and/or iPhoto.
I'd like to be able to launch the slideshow by only using remote as it is meant to be...
Any help appreciated!I solved it finally myself: I deleted my old photo files and photo albums from iPhoto. Now FR works nicely. Seems that the migrated photo libraries from iPhoto 4 did not fare well with iPhoto 6+Front Row.
Weirdly, this rather straightforward solution is not suggested anywhere... -
Cannot get iphoto to display imported pictures
Recently I used Duplicate Annihilator to remove duplicates from iphoto '09, which were imported from many folders of pictures (not directly from a camera) and I just noticed that all photos which had duplicates are now no longer in my photo library at all. This was around 2,000 photos. I used finder to search for a specific folder that I imported and that is no longer visible in iphoto and I am able to locate the folder and files of all missing pictures inside the iphoto library file.
So how do I get iphoto to display these files which are in the iphoto library but cannot be found in iphoto?
I have tried rebuilding the photo library by using command-alt-shift and opening iphoto, but it did not work. It did, however, create more duplicates which I am scared to annihilate out of fear that I will lose those completely as well.Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Run the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos.
Fix #2
Start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
1. Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
2. Open the library package like this.
3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
4. Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane. -
If i pressCommand Option when you launch iPhoto will i lose all my photos?
My photos are not backed up I have a mega amount and cannot lose them if I press command option when I launch Iphoto will i lose all my photos?
No
But if you do not have a backup yor are 100% guaranteed to lose all of your files sooner or later. Things do happen and this may be the time. Your top priority should be to purchase an external hard drive at least 2 1/2 time as large as your main hard drive and start backing up with Time Machine or other back up ASAP
Rebuilding will not lose photos. It might reveal that you have already lost photos
The back up is the only real answer

Hi...
Open Mac Mail. From the menu bar top of your screen click Mail > Preferences then select the General tab.
Select which email address you want to use to share photos on Facebook or email from the pop up menu next to: Default email reader:
Launch iPhoto. Select the photo then from the iPhoto menu bar click Share > Email or Share > Facebook.
