Cannot located files/ lost photos

I have an aperture project with little yellow triangles.
I guess it means aperture can't locate the original file. Maybe I deleted it by mistake...
I checked my time machine back ups and this project was not backed up. I can see the thumbnails in the project and even zoom in on them.
Is there any way of getting these photos back? Of rebuilding the files from the thumbnails or something?
I click on locate referenced files and theyer location comes up as a desktop folder which doesn't exist in red writing.
Anybosy know anything I can do?
Any help advice greatly appreciated!

Thank you soo much Leonie!
You are welcome. I am glad, you could save at least decent previews.
In addition to more frequent backups, I would not store the referenced originals on the Desktop, but relocate them immediately after importing (File > Relocate original file), to get them out of the way. The Desktop does not seem to be a safe place.

  • Error message "cannot locate file"

I purchased a new computer and used Detto Intelli Mover to transfer all my music files. When I opened the library, they all appeared to be there, but when I try to plan anything I get an error message "cannot locate file" This happens with all of my 1,200 songs. The error message also says "would you like to look", but I am unable to locate then. Can anyone help with this?

Have you added all the songs to the library? Just by dragging and dropping?

  • Itunes cannot locate files all of a sudden. Why?

I had recently went to a friends house who had home sharing turned on. I do not have this feature turned on.
When I left her house, I could no longer play my music.
It says " Itunes cannot locate file "
The songs that it is doing this for are songs I had to transfer over by a memory card from a previous computer.
Why all of a sudden are they missing files?

If you weren't doing Home Sharing then the HS thing likely has absolutely nothing to do with this.  You must have done something else that caused the links in iTunes database to break.  iTunes keeps a list of what files it needs to play and where they are located.  If you do something such as renaming a folder or moving a folder or file, it can cause that location reference to no longer be valid.

  • Itunes cannot locate files stored on external hard drive

I use a maxtor external hard drive for my music storage(f:itunes) with 7000 songs on it. My Itunes library all of a sudden stopped locating the files. Through forum posts, I used advanced/change file location to f:itunes, and the only way I could hear the songs was to open the f drive and individually click on each file.
I thought using library/consolidate library would solve this problem, now I have 2 or 3 copies of each song. Some of them play (with Fdrive connected) while others still show the cannot locate source message. When I tried a few songs I deleted the ones that would not play when clicked on, while keeping the ones that did. After deleting, the original ones now won't play.
How do I get my original set up to work, with Itunes library on my laptop to only display 1 track not 2 or 3, and play from the source files contained on my external HD? The other puzzling thing is when I connect my external drive, the prompt that asks what you want to do with the Maxtor displays a "F:\ access denied" message. Is this the main cause of my issues?

Well, before you wipe out your library and start all over, there is something to try.
You have to have the option set for itunes 'keep itunes folder organized' checked.
Change the location back to the default by pressing the reset folder location.
You will get a message asking if you want itunes to copy everything to match your settings. For god's sake, do NOT say yes or it will copy everything onto your C: drive.
Let it do its stuff. Then when it is finished, change the setting back to F:
+i-tunes music folder location to F:\mp3s+
Again, do NOT answer that question as yes.
Depending on how large your library is, this can take a while. My library has 27K tracks and it takes over a half hour. But you might get the links back. What this does is force itunes to look at all the paths.

  • Trying to put my old i tunes library on new computer - says cannot locate files

    Hi
I have just installed i tunes onto my new computer, I followed the steps on line to transfer my old i tunes library onto my new computer (it was backed up on external hard drive).  Now all the songs are showing, but when I click on them it brings up an exclamation mark and says it cannot locate the file.
Can someone please help me - I am a complete novice when it comes to technology.
    Many Thanks

    Hi
I have managed to find a previous library on another external hard drive and managed to add folders to i tunes.  It hasn't put all of the songs I had on previously on there, but it is all of the ones that I no longer have the cds for now.  All of the other songs I have got cd's for so can just redo them.
I am assuming now that all the songs are back in i tunes this will be my most up to date i tunes library now.   Once I have got my additional songs on would you recommend backing up the new library to an external drive again.
Thanks for your help, I have never had this problem before, it seems that whenever there is a new version of i tunes more problems arise!

  • Cannot locate file, even after it's copied to itunes

I download a mp3 from a radio show I like everyday. I use to be able to download the file to my desktop, and then drag it to the right playlist in itunes. After it's in itunes, I would delete the one on the desktop and I would have it in my library and be done with it.
Well now for some reason after I copy it to itunes, as soon as I delete the 1st one from the desktop, it says it can't locate it and offers for me to locate it. I don't want to leave it on the desktop. Why the sudden change?
    Any ideas?

By default iTunes stores it's files in <your profile>\<profile's music>iTunes\iTunes Music\etc... When you add music to iTunes from outside this folder structure there is an option to either make a copy inside the folder or simply create a link to the file at it's current location. It would seem that this option has changed on your system so that iTunes no longer makes it's copy, thus when you delete the seeemingly redundant file from the desktop, iTunes then cannot find the file. Goto *Edit... Preferences > Advanced* and enable the option *Copy files to iTunes Music/Media folder when adding to the library*. If you're running iTunes 9 you could create a shortcut on your desktop to the new *Automaticaly add to iTunes* folder. You could then save your download into that folder and iTunes will automatically import it without the need for copies to be made or deleted.

  • Itunes library cannot locate files on new computer

I've attempted to transfer my itunes library from one computer to another; however, when I click on the music, I get an error message:  "the file for the song cannot be used because the original file cannot be found".  I attempted to import the library using Homesharing initally, then attempted to transfer it via an external harddrive.  When the computer is connected to the external harddrive, the music will play.

I know how infuriating it can get and how you start to doubt your own sanity. The best thing is to go back to basics.
    1) Locate your actual music files.
If you look on your new computer, by default your music should be stored in my music\itunes\itunes media\ if you cannot see folders in there which contain your music it is fair to assume the media isnt on your computer. I tend to suspect that the music is on your external hard drive which is why it plays when you have that plugged in.
If you find the music on your hard drive I would go into preferences in itunes and tick the option in advanced that I mentioned previously, then, in itunes go to file and "add folder to library". If you cannot see the menu bar which contains "file - edit - view - controls - store - help"   you may need to press ctrl B to show it, alternatively if you click on the little box in the top left corner of the itunes screen and drop the menu and select "show menu bar"
So now when you press the add folder to library simply browse to where your actual music files are, find the folder which has all you r music etc in it and then click "select folder" in the bottom right of the window.
If you have done all that correctly and have ticked the "Copy media to itunes folder when adding library" option in "edit / preferences / advanced" your music should be copied from your external hard drive into the itunes folder and all should then work properly.
Fingers crossed lets hope thiat works for you.
Just a thought - if that creates duplicate entries in itunes then I would select all your music in itunes and delete it, then go through the above again so you only have the one set of music.

  • I have attempted to run Office 2010 Repair as Outlook will no longer open. When attempting to run Repair, it starts and stops saying in cannot locate file Office.en-us\dwdcw20.dll

I did the disc error repair process under the disc Properties/tool menu. That did not make any difference.  I then downloaded the file dwdcw20.dll and put it into the Windows/system32 folder as instructed.  That made no difference.  When ever
the Repair program is asking for the .dll file it brings up a window where I am to select a location.  I directed it to the system32 folder and then it says "invalid location".  I have pasted the file into other locations and pointed the
repair program to them but keep getting the "invalid location" responce.
SO, the question of the day is "What is the VALID location?" so that I can put the file into that location so that the Office Repair function will work.

Have you tried registering the DLL file with the regsvr command?

  • Cannot locate files-- HELP PLEASE

Went to bed last night everything worked fine, get up this morning and try to use Itunes. It says it cannot find the original files for the songs, I went in to where they are suppose to be and nothing. A little over 2500 songs. Any help???
I didn't move anything, just closed Itunes last night and opened it this morning.

Sorry to hear about the problem. If you're running Windows as your profile suggests, though, you'll have more luck getting help if you ask in the iTunes for Windows forum rather than here in the iTunes for Mac forum.

  • ITunes library cannot locate files saved on external hard drive

Hi, most of my music files are stored on my external hard drive. iTunes has decided it can't locate them and i'm wondering if there is any way of doing that without have to re-create my library from scratch or individually locate each file (approx 92GB of music)?!? I tried the tutorial on re-creating an iTunes library hoping that in doing so it would locate the files but no luck... i spent a LONG time organising that library and i'm really hoping i won't have to start over... thanks!

I have the same problem. I tried following the procedures for "Using Multiple Libraries" without success, even though the instructions explicitly state that you can name your iTunes library (the folder containing all of your iTunes content and the iTunes Library.itl file) whatever you like and store it anywhere.

  • I was editing today's photo..Thanksgiving..and iphoto shut down..and I cannot locate today's photos..help?

How can I recover today's photos?  I was editing them  about 91...i photo had already put photos in catergories..when suddenly..i photo just SHUT DOWN!
When I tried to reopen i photo..they had all disappeared.  please help me!

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • ITunes Files Lost & Really Cannot Locate, Please Help!

    Hi all
I have just downloaded the latest iTunes update and the latest IOS sodtware update 8.1 for my iPhone.
However, I have noticed my iTunes on my laptop has all gone wrong.  The majority of my music has the ' ! ' symbol next to it and the usual 'Cannot Locate File' message.  I have read several forums on here about the dragging of the 'iTunes Library' file to desktop, opening iTunes and then importing a New Playlist but this is only finding the music that I have purchased via the store opposed to the majority of my music that has been installed onto iTunes by copying from CD.
I am at a loss as to where they have gone or where they would have gone.  Can anyone help?
    Many thanks

The "missing file" error happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
If another application like Windows Media Player has moved/renamed the files then the chances are that subtle differences in naming strategies will make it hard to restore the media to the precise path that iTunes is expecting. In such cases, as long as the missing files can be found somewhere, you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes. See this post for an explanation of how it works.

  • Itunes can't locate files after I listen to it on the Ipod

It seems that every time I listen to a song, I notice that Itunes can't locate it anymore. When I go to Itunes and look in my music folder, there is an exclamation point next to the song. When I click on it, the error message reads "cannot locate file, would you like to locate it now". At first it was only one or two songs, now it's over 50! These songs are still on my Ipod, just no longer in Itunes. I know how to recover the music b/c it's in my hard drive, I just don't want to sit there and find all these songs all over again. Help please.

I too have been having the same problem... I am a new ipod owner and same with itunes. And being a new owner and user I got the new itunes. It has done the exclimation point since the first day I got it. But mine is simple to fix. I mearly just exit out of itunes and re-open it. I dont evn have to wait at all. It shows the exclimation point with about 20 of my songs and it hasnt gotten in my way yet. But the main problem that makes me mad is that my ipod is only 2 weeks old but I tried to get some of my friends music and she has the older version of itunes and my ipod ONLY works on the new version. Very frustrating if you ask me.

  • Laptop cannot locate music in ITunes

A buddy has his music loaded into Itunes on a laptop. When you click a song, it says it "cannot locate file, do you want to locate it?" Once you click yes and find the tune, it works fine. However, a day or two later, it gives you the same message. He wants to play his library from his laptop rather than from his IPOD. I downloaded 9.0.2 thinking that might help, but same issue. I also recopied all his music to another folder and switched the path, but that didn't work either. He said he loaded the music from a hard drive, but the songs originated from CD. Could this maybe be the problem? Thanks for any help.

For the sony owners, another apple discussions user named redkeefy posted this and it has helped hundreds users. Redkeefy used some special freeware from SysInternals to find the conflict.
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8537277#8537277
I have seen more & more posts from Gateway users, but none of them have posted a similar fix like redkeefy did.
Maybe it is something as simple as telling your security software to not scan the itunes folder?
Are you able to run the SysInternals software yourself and find the conflict?

Backup catalogs wouldn't have helped with this problem anyway, but naturally, you shouldn't delete backup catalogs for a while.
The solution to reconnecting the folders is given here: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders
