Cannot Logout or Reboot:  Logout Times Out

Over the past few days I have been unable to reboot or log out in a "normal" fashion. Every time I try it quits all the apps, then sits for a minute, then informs me that logout timed out, because the application (fill in the blank) could not be quit.
The application in question changes. Sometimes it is iChat, sometimes Safari or something else. But those applications HAVE QUIT. They aren't running any more.
This last time I was able to get back to Finder and ran Activity Monitor, and the named application (it was Safari) was not running. There were no processes associated with Safari in the "All Processes" list.
Anyone know why applications that aren't running are stopping me from rebooting, and how to fix this? I have to manually power off the computer every time (holding down power button), and I know that can't be good for the machine!

I had the same problem AFTER an upgrade to my iMac G5.
The solution for me was to ensure my *ONE AND ONLY USER was actually an Admin*. It appears that the upgrade 'degraded' my user to Standard (common enough problem with upgrading to Leopard that the fix is a headliner on Apple Support page for Leopard install). So, I suspect that the issue that corrupted my user also caused the inability to log out, restart or shutdown.
Steps to fix:
I followed instructions on updating my user to Admin again. See here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306876
*If your system is set up to ASK for login*, you should be fine with the instructions. HOWEVER, there was a problem with the solution, however.
+I had my system set up NOT to login, rather it goes direct to Desktop. So, I never had the chance to login as ROOT and set my user to Admin.+ So, I had this work around:
After a hard restart and boot into the Leopard install DVD, I followed the instrcutions to create a ROOT password. Very easy.
Then, I restarted and booted into the Leopard installation on the HD
Upon reaching the desktop, open System Preferences
Click on Accounts
Click on LOCK to change status
Sign in as user ROOT (with newly created password)
Create new ADMIN account (call it whatever you want)
IMPORTANT: Update settings to allow for change of users from the top, right of screen (+this is important because it is what allows you to change users, since a LOG OUT does not work+)
Change to new user
Open Sys Prefs
Click Accounts
Change my ORIGINAL user to Admin (might have to UNLOCK again)
log out
log in as Original user (now admin)
Go to sys prefs
Click Accounts
Delete other Admin user
After all of this, everything was normal.

  • Cannot connect to WIFI - 'connection time out occured' but also says 'no ip address'

    Hi,
    I've searched the web and found endless issues with the wifi router / etc of the Imac Lion system. On the same wifi network we have a mac book (leopard I think), a pc laptop (which I am using now) and 2 phones + my brand new Imac with Lion osx. The first 4 items all connect with no problems.
    I tried some of the sollutions here but it even made it worse as I now not have any connection at all!

    When I try to connect trhough systems preferences/network I get the message that my password is incorrect and that there is no IP address. Password is definitely correct. When I try to connect from the symbol in the right top corner - I get the message 'connection time out occured'
    I am a bit of a Mac dummy ... any help is really appreciated.
    Thanks

    If I choose security 'WPA2 Personal' or 'WEP'  i get the message@ no network found
    hmmmm any suggestions? Thanks so much

  • Cannot buy anything due to time out

    For the last 3 weeks every time I go to buy something from itunes I'm prompted to re-enter
    my password, asked to choose 3 security questions, and then I *immediately* get the message:
    Your session has timed out. Try again.
    There is nothing wrong or slow or flaky about my internet connection.
    I had a long back and forth email exchange with apple support and they were unable to help.
    I tried several suggestions from bloggers to mess with my system time.  These were of no help.

  • Itunes update to firmware fails, because connection times out.

    I have been unsuccessfully attempting to update my iphone 3gs and ipad to iOS 5 for over a month now.  I have spent many, many hours on this, and many phone calls to apple support.  I disable Norton 360, and windows firewall, and my firewall on my router.  I've tried updating my router's firmware, which bricked the router--thanks apple for insisting this was the problem, and I have replaced the router, with a new one.  Itunes diagnostics gives me the following information.  I am using itunes as the administrator in Windows 7, 64 bit, although itunes doesn't recognize it, unless I reinstall it as the administrator, but then once I restart the computer, itunes no longer recognizes that I using Windows as an admin.
    Also, the firmware cannot update, because the connection times out, despite all my firewalls, and antivirus being turned off.
    I've tried downloading iOS 5 and then updating using restore, but that didn't work.  I've poured through support forums, and error codes: I get 1611, etc.  Cannot seem to resolve this.
    Any ideas?

  • How to capture the Logout time in xMII

    Hi Friends,
    How to capture the logout time in xMII when the user clicks on Logout link
    Thanks

    Srikanth,
    It would be better to use a database table(s) to store your audit trail information than an xml file, which could grow beyond a manageable size and then require housekeeping efforts and file rolling, etc.  It would also be much easier to query user related information out of the logs, pareto charts for failed vs. successful login attempts, etc. if the data was stored in a database.
    Have you considered modifying the Relogin.jsp page link in the portal's sub-menu bar?  How about making your own version of this web page and changing the link pointer?  Keep in mind that whatever result you come up with here will need a significant update for NetWeaver UME compatibility in version 12.0.
    Regards,
    Jeremy

  • How to track the login time and logout times of clients

    hai
    please give me the solution
    suppose there are 5 systems connected in LAN.
    how to track the login time and logout times of clients
    for a given time(may be one day or 1 hour) using any programming language.
    please give me the solution

    When the client logs in you write the client's ID and the current time to a database. Likewise when the client logs out. Assuming of course that you have a program that knows when those events occur.

    where can i find these information?
    do Portal have already something like this?

    The login information is in the wwlog_activity_log. The logout action is only logged when it is explicit. I am using the last user action time for the logout time so I can determine the duration of the visit.

  • Auto logout time different per users

    Hello
    we are using almost all modules in ECC. So we have 2 kinds of SAP users, the administrative ones and the operational ones.
    The administrative ones is using SAP all the day by creating purchase orders, process orders or recording control results by example. When they make an activities in SAP they can completed the task without any interruption.
    But we have as well operational users who are using SAP to make physical activities like to place pallet in the warehouse with WM functions and to weight a drum from the PI-sheet in PPPI.
    The auto logout is after 15 minutes of inactivity and I don't find how to set it up per users. In deed, the operator in production needs time between each weighing meaning stick label, remove the previous drum, take the new one, write information on the paper batch record, ... The time between 2 actions in SAP is more than 15 minutes. So the operator is automatically logout between each weighing and it takes around 2 minutes to log again and reload the Pi-sheet. By example, to weight 46 drums the operator will lost more than 1,5 hour. It's not acceptable by the production.It increases the production time of 16%.
    How can I set up a auto logout time to 15 minutes or less for the administrative users and 1 hour for the production users located in a protected area ( no access by external people) ?
    thanks in advance for your answer
    regards
    V Noirot
    PPPI team lead

    Hi,
    You can increase the logout time for the endusers. But the power users, throughout the day they will be using the system. This time increase will not affect much on the power users. If you are saving some productive hours by increasing this time out means, you can do this. But it will act similar for both the users.
    regards,

  • Calculating Login and Logout Times - need help

    Hi everyone. I have the first part of this code and can't seem to figure out the time calculation part. What it is - create a code that asks for a user name or social security number, then the person enters up to 6 login and logout times for the day. They also have the option to enter personal time or sick time (neither of which can be over 8 hours). I have all of that complete, but I can't figure out how to get the in and out times and the leave times to calculate. I have 3 pieces of code - here they are:
    Hours:
    import java.util.*;
    public class Hours
         //define states of Hours
         int regularhoursInt = 0;
         int regularminutesInt = 0;

    I know it is a lot of code, but I am just starting and couldn't think of an easier way to do this.
    Thank you for any help - it is greatly appreciated. You can email me with any code help - [email protected].

    My 2 cents, I dunno what it'll be worth.
    I think you should never convert anything until the final moment that you are at actually getting the int or float number of hours.
    Why are you doing all this Gregorian and conversion gymnastics throughout your calculations?
    To get the current time in milliseconds, use either
    java.util.Date d = new java.util.Date();
    or
    long d = System.currentTimeMillis();
    Use this long number for all your calculations, and only at the end convert it. To convert, you can use java.text.SimpleDateFormat, which I find very straightforward to use. I honestly think you should never convert your dates before doing any calculations, only after doing them, otherwise you'll loose precision and make errors for sure.

    Hello Ajit,
    the security audit log offers the possibility to trace not only log on but also log off.
    You have to activate the audit in SM19. To validate the result use SM20. Please read the documentation for the security audit log for details....
    For instance at:

    If you are not using data and the iPhone goes to sleep, it will automatically drop the wi-fi, and will not reconnect until you wake the phone up. That is the way it is designed. The only way around that is to turn off cellular data while at home and on wi-fi.
    Cannot answer the xbox question since this is an iPhone forum and I would have no idea.

  • Correlate login and logout times in a table

    I have a table LOGINDATA with three columns: USERID, TYPE, and TIMESTAMP.
    USERID stores a unique integer that represents someone who uses the system.
    TYPE is either 1 or 2. 1 represents a login. 2 represents a logout.
    TIMESTAMP is a value that comes from System.currentTimeMillis. It represents the current time in milliseconds since January 1, 1970 (I believe that's the right date).
    I'm trying to create a query to link each login time with its corresponding logout time, so that my resultset has three columns:
    USERID, LOGINTIME, LOGOUTTIME.
    I assume this would involve joining the table to itself, but creating a query to find the closest login and logout times is tricky.
    What I have now is:
    select li.userid, li.logintime, lo.logouttime from
    (select userid, timestamp logintime from logindata where type = 1) li,
    (select userid, timestamp logouttime from logindata where type = 2) lo
    where li.userid=lo.userid
    and li.userid=999999 is the userid of one user.
    This will actually end up being more complicated with missing logout times, but this is a start.

    The data design makes this a very very very messy (and probably slow) query. Fundamentally, I consider designs like this to be broken because they're so hard to get relevant information out of the raw data; in some cases impossible (see comments below).
    The following query works on Oracle database (where TIMESTAMP is a reserved word, so I used EVENTTIME instead) - I tested it with a few rows of data:
    select li.userid, li.logintime, min(possible_logout) logouttime
    from (select userid || to_char(eventtime, 'yyyymmddhh24miss') session_id, userid, eventtime logintime
          from logindata where type = 1) li,
       (select li.userid || to_char(logintime, 'yyyymmddhh24miss') session_id, li.userid, logintime, logouttime possible_logout
        from (select userid, eventtime logintime from logindata where type = 1) li,
             (select userid, eventtime logouttime from logindata where type = 2) lo
        where logintime < logouttime
          and li.userid = lo.userid(+) ) pl
    where li.session_id = pl.session_id (+)
    group by li.userid, li.logintime
    order by li.logintime;Note that this will return the wrong result if for a particular user_id, you have overlapping logins, like:
    time a - login session 1
    time b - login session 2
    time c - logout session 1 or 2
    time d - logout session 2 or session 1
    there is simply no way to tell which logout goes with which login and the query will report that both sessions ended at time c, which is absolutely unacceptable if this is to be a security audit trail... The only way to deal with this is to guarantee at the application layer that no user can be logged in twice.
    Note also that it breaks by returning extra rows if a user somehow manages to log in twice or more at the same moment, whatever the granularity of your TIMESTAMP is... This is because of the join on the generated SESSION_ID; if you get 2 or more of them the same, you get a cartesian product (2 IDs, 4 rows; 5 IDs, 25 rows, etc...)
    It would obviously be a lot cleaner if you stored some sort of unique session_id in your table. Note that the session_ids used for session tracking in J2EE web servers get recycled over time and are therefore unsuitable (by themselves) as unique session ids. And if you store a session id, then you can fix your broken data model and avoid all this mess in the first place by making your table have the columns:
    USER_ID, SESSION_ID, LOGIN_TIME, LOGOUT_TIME
    Insert on login, update on logout...
