Cannot make changes to system HD - partition layout greyed out

Hi!
I recently reformatted my entire drive and reinstalled Lion with the official Lion USB recovery tool/usb. Now in disk utility the Partition Layout option is greyed out and I can not seem to re partition my disk. I´ve tried repairing my disk rights but still its greyed out.
I ran a demo of iPartition and this message was flagged:
"You cannot make changes to the disk from which your system booted.
To make changes to this disk, you should either boot from an external drive, use Target Disk Mode with another Mac, or create a bootable CD/DVD."
Does this mean I can only make changes with it when booting with the usb? This doesn´t make sense as it worked on the default startdisk before. Does anyone have solution?

It worked with the usb key, thank you!
You're welcome. Glad that worked for you.
But isn´t there a way to transfer the rights back to my disk or/and the integrated recovery partition?
I do not know the process. I suspect you'd get a quick answer by posting in the Lion forums: https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion
Good luck to you.

  • Partition layout greyed out – not possible to create a third partition

    Hi all,
Being in need of a new laptop, I bought myself a Macbook Pro retina, 13inch, 512gb SSD last weekend. I’ve been a windows user for almost 20 years now, with occasional exploits into Unix/Linux, but I’ve had it in mind to try out OS X for quite a while. I like the hardware and the design of the Macbook Pro and the fact that Boot camp promised to make dual booting into win7 a walk in the park, lead me to just try it out. However…
When I tried running boot camp (based on creating bootable USB’s):
ISO number 1 first didn’t get recognized by boot camp
Omitting the bootable USB creation by boot camp, downloading the drivers on a separate USB stick and using my own bootable USB lead boot camp to state that it didn’t recognize a windows install disk (even though the USB is bootable and does work)
Creating a full new ISO and using that one to create a bootable USB by boot camp worked, but gave an error during the copying of the files (can’t create USB, error during copying windows installation files)
Making a new image of that ISO within OS X to avoid compatibility issues gave the same error
Using another USB stick gave the same error
Unmounting the image still gave the same error
At that point I gave up on wanting to use boot camp and I decided to do the install myself. Going to disk utility to create new partitions triggered a new issue:
Via the “+”-sign, I can create a second partition on my drive. I can name that partition, format it any way I want and make it as big as I want.
After doing that, the “-“-sign is available to remove that partition again and to merge all back into one big HFS partition.
The tool doesn’t allow me to create 3 partitions though. The partition layout box is greyed out and fixed on “current”, and after the second partition is created, I can create a third one
Rebooting and doing disk utility via CMD+R gives the same issue.
I looked on the internet, found people with similar issues, but until now no real solution (unless a “boot via USB and partition from there”-solution, which I didn’t try yet).
Why doesn’t the system allow me to create 3 partitions?
What can I do to still create 3 partitions?
Is working via a bootable OS X USB really the only way to do this?

So can anybody help how to create a volume group actually and how to create a logical volume under volume group.LVM is not recommended in Dom0, which is why support for LVM has been removed from the installer. LVM is not cluster aware and does not support write barriers, both of which are important for a filesystem that is used for storing file-backed disk images.

    Hi,
Are you opening a PDF file in browser and trying to edit the PDF file there?
Please let me know in more details.
In general most PDF files cannot be edited in browser and some PDF can be edited with the permission for editing in browsers.
    Thank you.

  • Padlock will not unlock when i attempt to make changes to system preferences

After recently upgrading to Mountain Lion, when i try to click the padlock to make changes in system preferences, it does not do anything.  I have already repaired disk permissions, still no luck.  Any suggestions??

No luck.  When I click the padlock, it should popup my username and ask for my password.  it doesn't even do that.  the padlock just jiggles and doesn't attempt to open.

  • Cannot make changes to the contents of this read-only folder

I recently got a new laptop and loaded Office 2013.  We have three inboxes in Outlook and are using Cox IMAP.  I get the following message when I try to delete emails from the primary inbox "Cannot make changes to the contents of this read-only
folder". Emails can be deleted from the other folders with no problem.
Does anyone know what could be causing this and how to fix it?

    Hi
As per the information and details provided by you, to solve the problem of Outlook inbox folder, please follow these steps: -
Step 1: - If you are unable to delete all emails from a given Outlook folder, most likely that folder is locked.
    Restarting Windows should fix it.
Step 2: - If you are unable to delete only some emails, then your
Outlook data file might be corrupted.
    Step 3: -
Empty your Deleted items mail folder, then try again to delete emails.
    Step 4: -
Hard deletes the selected emails – While the emails are highlighted/selected, keep the
Shift key pressed and hit the Delete key.
    Step 5: -
Restart Outlook in Safe Mode and try deleting the emails from there.
    Step 6: -
Edit the culprit email (Actions > Edit Message), save it back and try to delete it.
I hope this information will be helpful for you.
    Thanks and regards

  • Fix iTunes!!!!!  I cannot make changes to my account because I cannot sign in to iTunes since it won't stay up long enough.

This is stupid.  Since iTunes 12 came out I cannot open the P.O.S. software on my computer (Windows 7 64-bit).  I have uninstalled the correct way, was told that my iTunes library was corrupted and to recreate it, which I did.  Then I was told to downgrade my iTunes to an older version.  Guess what?  I can't because my library was created with a newer version.  I cannot make changes to my account because I cannot sign in to iTunes since it won't stay up long enough.
Anyone have any luck fixing this crap program??

    Hi,
I cannot open my DTP to make changes. when I tried to double click I got this error
Source system X01CLNT001 does not exist
    Message no. RSAR203
I have tried connection test from SM59 and there seems to be no problem.
    How do I resolve this?
    thanks

Goto RSA1 --> Source System --> right click --> Check.
    Is it giving any error?
You can click on restore also and check if anything improves.
Also check whether datasource and transformation is active.

  • Unable to authenticate myself to make changes in System Preferences or install programs

Hello everyone I am just freaking out because I don't want/can't reinstall the system!!
I just recently started having the problem that every time that I wanna install something, when it should ask me for my password to authenticate my admin account, the window never shows up and the program shows up as "Not responding". The same problem occurs when I try to click on the padlock in the System Preferences to try to make a change it changes from "click the lock to make changes" into "authenticating" but the window never shows up (images below).
I am the only user with Admin rights in my Mac OS 10.10.2; MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011), 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7, 10 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB.
    I have tried:
    - I restarted - no good.
    - Repair the permissions - no good.
    - Also tried repairing the keychain access - no good.
    - In Terminal I tried: sudo killall -9 securityd; sudo pkill -HUP securityd; ssudo killall -HUP securityd - no good (and said that only Apple apps can do that).
I checked in the console and this comes up:

    Hi my ginger,
Thanks for the reply, I did what you recommended and reinstall with Command+R and you were right all my files survived!
Unfortunately the situation persist I keep having the same problem and I cannot  authenticate! Still the window to enter my password doesn't show and the lock stays saying "authenticating" even after I reinstalled! :-( what could it be? !

  • I don't know my administrator's name in order to make changes in system preferences.

I cannot make any changes in system preferences because whatever 'administrator name' I put down will not work. The password is correct. What steps should I take?

Thank you so much for your help. I apparently had the wrong Admin username somehow, and found it by typing
dscl . -read /groups/admin GroupMembership | open -ef
into Terminal. A text box popped up with the root username.

  • Administrator account cannot make changes to Apple RAID?

    Hi all,
I need help: I cannot delete files or folders on the TOP LEVEL of my Apple RAID (connected via fibre channel).
My account has administrator privileges, and I CAN 'unlock' the lock on the drive folder, BUT it won't allow me to make changes, or allow changes to 'stick'.
I cannot get disk utility to 'verify permissions' on the RAID; the option is greyed out.
I CAN delete files in subfolders, but the top level of folders and files cannot be changed or deleted. By 'top level' I mean what you see when you click on the RAID drive icon on your desktop - the files/folders in the top level of that drive's directory.
Any ideas how to correct this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any insight.

Well, in pure Apple File System talk... -36 ioErr I/O error (bummers)
Not very helpful, but generally means a Drive quit being Readable or Writable since starting the operation...

Can the other account delete those?

  • Cannot Make changes directly to table's field data

I need to make changes to table e.g ekko but when I enter table, the change option is in display mode and I cannot make direct changes to the table. I need to update some data in a field. I checked other tables as well, but all have change option as display.
Is there any settings required to get the table in change mode?

I dont understand what to do in point 1, how to generate view of table, can you make it little easier to follow. I tried database table i.e. ekko and when I click change it asks access key, which I dont have as I guess I have to get it from SAP..

  • Finder wants to make changes to system.preferences

Every time we login to our iMac, a window comes up with "Finder wants to make changes" and asks for my password. The details indicate the change is to the system.preferences file, but I can't recall trying to make any changes.
How do I make sure that someone (e.g., one of our kids) didn't change system.preferences? And how do I keep the message from coming up?
(Note that up to now, I've been clickin on "Cancel".)

Are you sure this is the correct message? There shouldn't be any file with the name "system.preferences". Post the exact message.

  • Why did Windows 7 make the 100MB "System Reserved" partition on my second hard drive instead of the hard drive windows was being installed on?

I have a Dell laptop with two physical hard drives. When I installed Windows 7, I deleted all the partitions on both physical disks. I installed windows and left the second disk unallocated. So why did the installer decide to place the 100MB System Reserved partition on the disk that wasn't being used?
    http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/8403/partitionsi.jpg

I found the solution to the problem I described above. Here was the approach to resolve.
Install SATA Y-Power cable jumper on one of the SATA connectors. This gives me capability to power 3 SATA SSD drives
    Install the third drive.
Start Windows and initialize the new drive. Now I have 3 drives.
Clone Drive C (Drive 0) to the new (third) Hard Drive (call it Drive 2). I used Acronis True Image Home.
Remove Hard Drives 0 and 1
    - the current drives required to boot Windows and that have my Images and data
Install the Cloned Drive as Drive 0  and restart
Windows should prompt me (hopefully) to repair this drive after the boot error.
Run Startup Repair on this drive (drive 2) by loading the Windows Media CD and selecting the only drive installed (Drive 2)
If successful, I would have created a Drive that can boot on its own and has my image and data. If unsuccessful, I put back in Drives 0 and 1 and I am back up and running. I this is a zero risk approach.
    Here are the results:
    Success!
I got the power jumper cable in and executed the steps below. The below procedure worked flawlessly. The loading of the Windows CD took me to a Repair option that sensed a problem with Startup. If failed
to see the Windows installation on the Cloned drive (now drive 0). This was expected. It asked me if I wanted to fix it. I said yes. The system restarted and there was another boot error. I loaded the Windows CD again. This time it saw the Windows 7 Installation
and told me there were Startup problems that needed to be fixed. I said yes again. The system restarted and Windows came right up!
So now I can boot from one drive. I am going to run like this for a couple of days just to be sure. Then I am going to reconnect the other two drives as drives 1 and 2 and figure a way to use them effectively.
    Good luck!
    George

  • HT1918 Trying to make make account changes to my itunes account.  Receive error message regarding province "enter at most 3 letters" when the only option I have is to select from a drop down menu.  Cannot make changes to my account.  How do I get this fix

As you can tell, this is my first post
I am attempting to make changes to my itunes account, but when I hit done, an error message "enter at most 3 letters or numbers for province" appears.  I have not attempted to make any modificaitons to this field.  The only options I have for data in this field are picked from a drop down menu.  I have no idea why this msg is appearing.  Any ideas on why it is showing up?  Thanks.
