Cannot migrate from Time Machine
My wife's MacBook Air went kaput after a cup of tea drowned her keyboard. I had set up Time Machine on my Time Capsule. We replaced her broken laptop with a brand new MacBook Air. I open Migration Assistant, find the appropriate back up file on Time Capsule, then start the migration of the old files to the new MacBook Air. Things were working smoothly until it reaced "57 minutes" to completion. Then it stalled. It would not budge after several hours.
So I quit Migration Assistant, then reopened. This time I selected fewer files (no applications, settings, or documents--just the "user"). Now the bar is stuck at 25-27 minutes (it fluctuates) and has been for an hour.
My son encountered a similar stall using Migration Assistant on his brand new MacBook Pro. He was able to manually transfer using Target Mode and Ethernet, since his old computer still worked.
Is there a problem with Time Machine, the Time Capsule, Migration Assistant, corrupt files--or some combination?
Hello David,
I suspect the backup on this Time Capsule was done via WiFi and thus the backup is a sparse bundle image? If so it's very possible (dare I say likely) that the image file has somehow been corrupted. The fact that it's hanging would further support the notion that there's a potential for file corruption.
If in fact you are dealing with a corrupted sparse bundle here's a good resource that can assist in repairing it -
http://www.garth.org/archives/2011,08,27,169,fix-time-machine-sparsebundle-nas-b ased-backup-errors.html
I should note that it's not guaranteed to work, there never is when it comes to data corruption but it's better than nothing.
Also, if possible, running the Time Capsule directly to the MacBook Air via Ethernet (and the USB-to-Ethernet) adapter is recommended to avoid potential data corruption due to WiFi signal interference.

Cannot migrate from time machine backup
Yesterday my internal hard disk crashed and after repairing disk in recovery mode I could reinstall MtLion.
Using migration assistent I wanted to recover my old accounts, but the assistant could not find my time machine backup.
Information
Backup-System: External USB Harddisk connected directly to iMac
Spare-Bundle located in root folder of external hard disk
Backup only for my account folders and some special folders but not the entire system
I can open the TM backup with "DiscUtility" and with Time Machine (pressing <option> key while opening TM-menu)
Currently I try to repair the SpareBundle because this has been mentioned in many discussions and support pages.
I would like to use the Migration assistent because I am afraid, that my "secret"files like key-chain would not be accessible any longer in case I recover it manually.
What can I do so that the assistent works again?

Be sure you're selecting the From Another Disk option in Migration Assistant.
The sparse bundle should appear on the Select Your System window there, but note that it will show the name of the disk and Computer name that was backed-up, not the name of the disk the backups are on.
Or, you may first see the name of the drive the backups are on; if you select that, after a few moments, you'll see the actual backups, with the name of the disk and Computer that were backed-up.
If it doesn't appear, try manually mounting the sparse bundle before starting Migration Assistant.
We have a few reports that occasionally a disk won't appear, but the Continue button will be enabled; if so, click it - the Select items to Migrate window may appear and you can proceed.

That's a bit strange. Normally, for backups made to a directly-connected HD, the Backups.backupdb folder
is placed at the top level of the drive, not inside a sparse bundle. A sparse bundle is used only when backups are made over a network. It doesn't much matter now, but is there a reason that was done?
• Backup only for my account folders and some special folders but not the entire system
That prevents you from doing a full system restore, which often works when Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant don't.
And you'll likely have trouble with any "complex" 3rd-party apps (typically the ones that come with their own installers). They'll probably have to be reinstalled from the original discs.
Currently I try to repair the SpareBundle because this has been mentioned in many discussions and support pages.
Yes, that's the place to start. In this case, you need to repair both the disk or partition containing the sparse bundle and the sparse bundle itself (it's kind of a disk-within-a-disk).
If you're not sure how to do that, use the procedure in #A5 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting for a USB drive connected to a Time Capsule.
If Disk Utility can't repair it, see the pink box at the bottom of that page -- it's possible a heavy-duty, 3rd-party disk repair app can.
I would like to use the Migration assistent because I am afraid, that my "secret"files like key-chain would not be accessible any longer in case I recover it manually.
If you can't repair the sparse bundle, or if Migration Assistant still doesn't recognize the backups, that will be your only other option.
Unfortunately, there do seem to be some cases where Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant on Mountain Lion don't recognize perfectly good backups. Hopefully Apple is working on a fix, but that's not going to help now.
As far as I understood, then I can re-use my "old" TM-Backup and connect it to Time Machine without deleting my old backup
Maybe, but you'll need a different procedure.
You'll need the new account to have not only the same name, but the same UID (User ID number) as the old one. Those are assigned automatically when you create a user account, and are mostly invisible.
If you never had more than one account, the one on the backups should be #501. And the one you created after installing OSX should also have #501, so if you can get the backups to appear at all, the new user account should have access to them. And if they have the exact same short user name (home folder name), when you do the next backup, Time Machine should recognize the home folder as the same one as on the backups, as if nothing had changed.
We may need to explore that further once you get your system rebuilt.
And you'll have to manually "associate" the new disk with the backups, per #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting before starting new backups. -
I had to format my internal disk drive on my MacBook Pro, and reload Mountain Lion 10.8.3. The startup assistant could not see my external disk drive with the Time Machine backup files. After many tries I told it to skip restoring the files and let it boot up. I was able to see my 1 TByte external drive and could see the Time Machine files using Finder.
I started the Migration Assistant and told it to migrate from Time Machine Files on an external drive. It also did not see the backup drive. The only drive icon it showed was the Macintosh HD (my internal drive).
Isn't it supposed to show you the drive you are moving the files from? I tried starting it and it looked like it was going to try to migrate the files from the internal drive (to where I don't know, back to itselfl?) Or do I just not understand. Is it seeing the external drive, without identifying it (in the Migration Asst,)?
Really looks like it is going to back up the internal HD with files that are on the internal HD and not from Time Machine.
I need to restore my files and have been told I need to do so using Migration Assistant and not Time Machine.
Help pleae and soon, need to get my taxes finished!
Thanks!I'm surprised that no one replied to this. But I learned a few things that may be helpful to some of you with this same question.
When you restore data from an external disk drive with Time Machine files on it. As you move through the dialog (in either System Startup or in the Migration Assistant) it will ask if you want to restore from an external disk with Time Machine files. If you select this option, it will show you only one Icon. You will expect to see your external disk drive listed as the source of the restore. The icon that is shown will look like your ilnternal drive and will be labeled something like Macintosh HD. That is not your internal drive, but is your backup drive. It is labeled the same as your internal disk drive and it is telling you that you have found the backup for your internal disk drive.
Would be nice if Apple would put a note of explanation about this as part of that dialog. I wasted several hours trying to make it work Finally I took a chance and selected the drive shown and it did restore my system. I ended up with two users since I did it from Migration Assistant. Had I done it from the System Startup, there would only be the one user. -
When migrating from time machine to a new hard drive, not all is transferd, only partial documents, applications , settings etc. How can I migrate the latest back-up with all the content.

If you want to use Time Machine to recover the contents of one of its a backups to a new drive, follow the instructions in Mac OS X 10.6: Recovering your entire system. Note that you must select the "Restore System From Backup" option from the Utilities menu of the Installer disc to do this.
Also note that if you are transferring files to a hard drive to be used with a different computer, you should use Migration Assistant instead. This intentionally will not copy everything because some settings, applications, etc. are not compatible computer-to-computer. Migration Assistant will copy everything that is. -
When migrating from time machine to my new hard drive, it migrates the first back-up I made several years ago. How can I migrate the latest back-up ? I need time machine to migrate the latest back-up. Should I delete the older back-ups ?
As noondaywitch says, it should use the latest backup.
Where are your backups (external HD, Time Capsule, etc.)?
It sounds like there are two separate sets, and you're not connected to the right set. -
My Safari "quits unexpectedly" each time I try to start it on my new MacBook Air after I transferred it from my MacBook via migration from time machine backup disk.

10.5.8 mac pro cannot restore from time machine backup
Hey there,
I've had a mac volume die on me so I ordered the 10.5.8 cds from Apple. I installed the OS on a new hard drive and trying to migrate from time machine backup and the backup failed to move both my user and application settings. I've tried using the migration assistant, this also fails and doesnt show me the correct volumes in TM. Please help! What have you done to repair and rebuild the directory of your old drives?
One word of caution is that Alsoft Disk Warrior is/was not (not sure latest version) to deal with the huge size of some TimeMachine backup volumes which as Ricks said, are complex and prone to failures.
I wanted to see how it would work to have one TM drive for dailys, another for just run once a week, and system clone before any updates. Plus a small handy emergency only boot drive volume (40GB).
So you are stuck with 10.5.8 due to cost of software applilcation upgrades? and with Lion there is no support for old PowerPC, no Rosetta to run and support those. And then ML coming soon which seems to drop support for pre-2008s.
Metadata is trash as in temp cache and in a smart backup - like CCC and such - would never be backed up or shouldn't be - they should be deleted and is one case and use for things like CCleaner to be run (until Safari and Chrome do job limited age and size of disk caches).
Caches and temp files and logs can be source of problems.
SyncServices - 10.5.x started using that and that would get messed up at least when I looked at it 10.5.2+ era.
I'd dual boot SL and 10.5.8
10.5.x came out 4.5 yrs ago. In that time I upgraded boot drive couple times, formatted/initialized when it came out and again a year later 10.5.6 and then with 10.6.0 or about once a year to clone, erase, restore.
You used your backup drive for two years.
Originally hoped that it would be easy and possible to clone TM backup drives for safety and so you coudl take a good set with a year of data on it and instead of start over, take it and make a copy for archive your files. A good file history.
There are programs that add to and help manage and allow the user to look at and choose backup sets from different points in time. I take it you can't do that.
I would invest in more backup drives, internal and external, while try to build a new solid footing and foundation - so you can install, clone, do more modifications and installs and updates, so you never have to redo.
With backup clones you would never have to worry about reinstalls or lost files. CCC will with a large enough volume also allow archive of file changes. TM is probably good - for those that didn't and dont' like to backup.
I would hope though have seen enough errors, but you are using the initial TM backup program which has had three more OS versions and 3 yrs since to improve form 10.5.8 (came out June '09). -
I migrated from old machine with Leopard to new machine with Lion. After migration, I had all photos, music, applications, etc. This morning there is no music, no photos and missing programs. I have now downloaded the fix they put out yesterday. Can I simply redo a new migration from Time Machine to get those things back?
Monty,
If you used Migration Assistant what has probably occurred is it created another user account. Log out of your current account and see if there is another account, if so log into that one and see if your information is there. -
Login Error after installing Lion and migrating from time machine
I cannot log into Lion under my user setting, I am getting the error: "You are unable to login to the File Vault User account {name} at this time."
Apparently I did not turn off file vault before upgrading to Lion and when I set up Lion I did not migrate from time capsule because it was not finding it even thought the firewire was plugged in so I went ahead and filled out my name and set up a password. I was in Lion and attached the external drive and finally it read it so I migrated the information. I'm not sure if I didn't check the transfer "user" box or the Lion password does not match my File Vault password but now I cannot get into Lion.
I contacted Apple Support and they told me I would not be able to access my old user info because it is locked. I tried to reinstall Lion and get back to the screen where it prompts me for a password so I could change it to my file vault password and cannot get back to that screen. I also cannot create a new user - I can only use guest.
I tried reset password from the terminal and this did not work.
Is there any way I can do a clean Lion install and try the migration again to make sure the passwords and user box is checked?
Please help... I'm desperate! You say Downloads folder has never been excluded and you can't find the Downloads Folder. Do this... OpenFinder then in Finder select your Downloads Folder, open Time Machine if your Downloads Folder has been backed up, Time Machine will take you directly to your Downloads Folder backups.

Problem after migration from time machine
I recently changed the hard disk in my macbook to a bigger one,
and then used migration assistant and my time machine backup to restore the system.
Everything seems to work just fine except aperture.
about 90% of my projects do not show any thumbnails, just outlined gray boxes with a file name
when I click on them I get to see the photo in question but when I click "show master" aperture says "master image offline" (and does not show the photo anymore)
my Library is referenced and the masters are located on the computers hard disk itself (not on an external one) and they are all there !
(i.e. they were perfectly transfered from time machine)
when I first opened aperture after the migration I got a message that the library was corrupted, I clicked repair and this produced a recovered folder
with a recovered project which as far as I can see is empty ?
I tried the 3 trouble shooting tools (repair permissions, repair database and rebuild database) none of which changed anything
I was going to try to restore the library file from time machine but now time machine says that I do not have permission to acces the pictures folder !?
(at least not on any backup older than the last one, which was done after the system was migrated)
I am starting to get stuck here, I found several references online to the same problem but no real solution.
Any ideas?OK, so I did a clean install of snow leopard from the installation DVD and then used setup assistant to restore from time machine.
Since time machine had already made backups after I migrated for the first time it basically restored the system
to its previous state (with aperture not working properly), it did however restore the admin account which I had already deleted.
This allowed me to access my older time machine backups.
When I tried to restore the aperture library file (after first deleting the current one and emptying the trash)
I got a window saying copying 0kb from 10,68GB that just hung there
after checking my user account I found an aperture library file of about 6GB, I deleted this and did the restore again and let the window saying copying 0kb of 10,68GB run for half an hour, I then found an aperture library file in my account of 11GB. I opened aperture and guess what? exactly the same as before! no thumbnails and no access to masters except for about 10 projects (in fact every time I try this aperture makes previews for exactly 608 photos !?
I might try to copy the libary file from the old hard disk if I find something to mount it, but I am starting tho think that i will just have to reimport the entire library, and forget about the versions and be thankfull that I at least saved the masters :-( -
Cannot restore from time machine
I installed a new SSD into my late 2012 mac mini along with the current HDD. Turned it on formatted the SSD and everything work fine. Next I wanted to transfer OSX and applications to SSD and use HDD for just storage. I backed up using time machine. I looked into a few different was to transfer OS. DIsk utility was wanting to create a fusion drive from the 2 drive. I went with this option.
It wiped the drives and made a new single storage group. I tried restoring from time machine a couple of times but this would not work saying: 'An error occurred while adding a recovery system to the destination disk' I went back into disk utility and checked the disks. Repaired the errors it said and tried again. Did not work.
Next I tried deleting the disk again and installing Mountain Lion from scratch from the internet option in recovery mode. This took I long time and got as far as nearly installing osx but got stuck on 15 mins remaining. I left this all day while I was at work.
Tried doing this a second time and it started downloading from the internet again but something must have gone wrong because when I came back it was back in recovery mode screen.
So not sure what else I can try to get this fixed. There is a suggestion online that this is a known problem with Mountain Lion and 2012 machines, but that doesn't really help me get working agian. The only other thing I can think of trying is un-fusioning the 2 drives and trying to install on just one to see if this works.
Does anyone else have any other steps to try? Some drive partition configurations can result in the OS X Installer reporting that it cannot create a Recovery System. If this happens, you might want to quit the installation and create an external OS X hard drive with a Recovery System first. You can continue installing OS X on your computer's startup drive after creating an external Recovery System.
Where did yo install the SSD? Lower bay (one nearest the bottom cover) or the uppter bay (normally empty on single drive Mini?
Some users have reported problem with an SSD in the upper bay. Maybe because of the new cable or because of that SATA bus.
Try installing the SSD in the lower bay iff it is not there. Also if yo do not want a Fusion drive, disconnect the HD during the install if the SSD has enough space for the TM backup -
ITunes library disappeared and cannot reinstall from Time Machine
I have searched all support threads for my problem -- updated to Mavericks and all my playlists disappeared and audio files that the new itunes didn't seem to know what to do with (meditation i.e.) I've tried to reinstall from Time Machine, but all support threads refer to itunes library and folder which I don't have anymore. I drag it to the desktop and tried to reload from there. I tried to do it directly from TM but get the error message that says something about a file instead of a folder.
Has anyone else had thisThis is what things should look like:

Cannot restore from Time Machine or Reinstall - MacBook Pro Yosemite
Hi all,
I recently started using a new Mac (Macbook Pro 15" with Yosemite) about 2 weeks ago. Upon startup it asked whether I wanted to encrypt and I said yes. It then froze for about 30min with the spinny wheel. After the startup was finally complete I used it normally for the next two weeks but the FileVault encryption in Security & Privacy never completed. It was stuck on "encryption paused" and underneath said "Connect to power adapter to continue encryption". Nothing I did fixed the problem. I then did a Time Machine Backup onto a USB with plans to restore from Time Machine. The backup went successfully with no issues. I put the Mac into recovery mode (command+R) and did Restore from Time Machine Backup. It was able to find my Time Machine Backup on the USB, and in the next window "Select a Destination" it found my HD. I clicked restore and there was an immediate error saying that I should restart the computer and try again. From then on in "Select a Destination" it now says "No Time Machine backups were found." This is strange because I already selected the time machine backup and should be looking for a destination now, but regardless nothing can be found.
From there I went to Disk Utility and verified. There didn't appear to be anything wrong. I did repair disk and it didn't seem to do anything.
Then I tried to do a Reinstall OS X. On "Select the disk where you want to install OS X" the only options are my USB with the backup, or "Recovery HD". If I click Recovery HD there is a pop-up saying "This disk is locked." There are no other choices for install, and leaving Recovery mode doesn't appear to be possible.
Does anyone have a solution to this? So far my experience with Yosemite on two different macs has been torture and I do not recommend.
Thanks! You have a warranty. Take it back and ask the store to fix it for you. You do not need to encrypt the drive, but the Yosemite installation does so automatically unless you select the option not to do so during the install process. You need to look for that carefully. As of now you would need to turn off FV2 to decrypt the drive which takes about as much time as encryption does - quite a while unless you have a small capacity SSD.

Cannot restore from Time Machine since upgrade to 10.7.3
I am using a Mac Mini (Mid 2010) using the 2nd HD for backups of Time Machine.
Yesterday, the Mac could not start up and always stop at the First Aid panel (which contains i) an option for restoring from time machine, ii) reinstall Lion, iii) help online ... Whenever I choose restore from backups, the Mac was frozen at the multiple language choice panel. So, I have to reinstall OS Lion. It's successful. Then I restore from backups in 2nd HD and the strange thing happens. It doesn't matter what version of backup I choose, it appears that the contents in my wiki is updated only to March 2012. When I browse the Time Machine, it's really a surprise that I update 10.7.3 by the end of March 2012. Since then, despite the fact that the backups run regularly and backups versions appear in Time Machine, the contents of my wiki (which is added and modified everyday) are not updated. All backups under 10.7.2 are okay.
Can anyone know about this problem?
Best regards,Well, I know about the problem but do not know a solution I am afraid. I had the same problem where the wiki, calendar and addressbook were a couple of months old after a restore from time machine two weeks ago. I did not relate this to the upgrade to 10.7.3, but that could easily be the case. I never did time machine restores before.
I was able to restore calendars from client side time machine backups (a lot of work), but the wiki I could not restore to an up-to-date version. My guess is that files were restored correctly, but not the postgresql databases. So I started to make daily backups from postgresql myself now. This post helped me with that:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/17008934#17008934
Another thing I started doing was creating a bootable clone on a usb disk with carbon copy cloner, which is incrementally updated twice a day now.
But I hope that Apple will fix this in an upcoming update. I would be nice if you could rely on Time Machine backups. -
Cannot restore from Time Machine... "not enough space" but there is
I am trying to restore a 140GB file from Time Machine. I can see it both through the Time Machine interface and by going through Finder.
I have 202GB free on my Mac hard drive. Whenever I try to restore the file, or copy it through Finder, I get "Preparing to Copy" for a while and then "The item can't be copied because there isn't enough free space".
No idea how to resolve this - any ideas?Gosh, I was not expecting that and nothing mentioned in iCreate or MacFormat tuition articles. My task is to move and partition data from my external hard drives, so that I can create partitions to hold various storage for BOOTCAMP to use.
Looks like my external drives are not capable of the task!
