Cannot migrate to new mac using OSX 10.8.2 from old one using 10.5.8

Hi folks,
have just set up my new mac mini, which runs 10.8.2, and tried to use migration assistant to get files from my old macbook that uses 10.5.8. Have got as far as putting the six-digit code in on the old mac, and seeing the old mac on the new one, but they still won't talk to each other. Connection is via ethernet to my local router - I can access the internet from both, so the connection seems to work. Have checked all that Pondini has to say on the subject, but still no luck. What's the next thing to check?

Update to OS X 10.8.4, but that may not be the reason your Mini is not recognizing the MacBook.
I suggest you simplify things by connecting the two Macs directly to each other with an Ethernet patch cable. A crossover is not required. If you happen to have a FireWire cable you can use that in conjunction with FireWire Target Disk Mode: connect the two then start the MacBook while holding the t key. In that case you would choose to migrate "From a Time Machine or other disk" and not "From another Mac". The MacBook's disk will appear to the Mini as a locally mounted volume.
Hopefully one of these suggestions will result in success.

  • HT1338 my old mac cant connect to internet and my migration assistant needs an upgrade is there any way to download to my new mac and install the upgrade on my old one so i can complete the migration process?

I just purchase a new IMac, I am trying to use migration assistant. the problem I am having is my old mac cannot connect to the internet and it needs a software update, can I download the update on my new mac and install it somehow on my old mac?

If it's a free update, search Apple's support site for it and move the dmg as you would any file. If it's a paid upgrade, no; the Mac App Store upgrades, while downloadable, can't be downloaded from a Mac which can't use them.

  • External backup drive will not mount on new mac mini. still works fine on the old one. new one is running mavericks

I just bought new-to-me mac mini running OSX mavericks.
Trying to migrate from old mac mini using simpletech external hard drive.
It still mounts on my old mac mini (system 10.5) but will not mount or show up when I plug it in to the new mac mini running mavericks.
    Any ideas?

What exactly shows in System Profiler>Hardware>USB for those drives?
Boot from the Install Disc & see if they show up, not grayed out in Disk Utility.
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
We were thinking along the same lines. While at home I dug up a firewire enclosure and put a bootable GUID formatted drive in it (that I had in one of the usb enclosures) and started her computer holding down the option key and then chose to boot from the external firewire. All usb drives are now mounting upon connection. I asume that her drive has bad sectors on it (even though the SMART status says it's OK) and is not loading all the drivers properly for USB to mount. I was suspicious from the beginning that the OS was corrupt when she first had me look at it. It was at that point that I booted it in target mode, connected to my Macbook Pro, and then CCC'd to a usb drive that I had. I then had a couple of difficulties installing the new OS. Should have known......
I am now going to put a new drive in it for her and she'll be up and running.
Thanks so much for your help and thoughts that got me thinking as well.

  • How to transfer email folders from old Mac to new Mac, How to transfer email folders from old Mac to new Mac

How do I transfer email folders with all messages from a i-Mac G5 (OSX 10.4.11) to a new iMac with OSX 10.6.7?

    Martin,
I would recommend starting over this time using Setup Assistant. Because you are migrating from a PPC machine I would migrate everything EXCEPT applications. You should manually install your apps, this will give you the opportunity to udate the ones that need it and I'm sure there are many. You may even apps that won't run on Intel based machines so why migrate them at all? You can use the Setup Assistant tips beginning at "Second chance...." You can either restore from your old machine or from one of it's backups. I think you'll see it's a pretty clean process, something you passed over (I'm not sure why) when  you turned on the new iMac for the first time.

  • HT1338 do we get software updates if you are using a different apple id from the one used to purchase os x mountain lion?

Is it mandatory that the same apple id used for purchase should be used to get software updates?  What happens if os x was purchased using one apple id and you use another to check for updates?

I think the operating system is the one exception to the rule that usually the purchase is linked to the Apple ID rather than the machine, but with operating systems (Lion, Mountain Lion) the purchase is tracked on the machine instead.

  • "Extended Photo Info" lost/invisible after migration to new Mac with 10.6.2

I just migrated my iPhoto library to my new Mac running OSX 10.6.2 from a Mac running OSX 10.3 I did this by copying the "Pictures/iPhoto Library" folder to an external drive. Today I tried to use "Show Extended Photo Info", and information appears to be lost? There is no Camera or Exposure information. I re-imported a photo from an old e-mail, and it does have the information! Do the Event/Location/Face features cause this to be deleted from my photos? I used these feature a lot before noticing anything was wrong.
Any ideas? Can I somehow check to see if the JPEG file still has the information? It is not too late to re-do the library import. I cannot live without the exposure information, as I like to play with my camera settings.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. After copying the library to the external HD did you open it directly with iPhoto? When iPhoto 09 converted that library to the latest version it would not have done anything to lose the EXIF data which is stored in the library's database files.
You didn't import that library into a new library did you? If you didn't then try rebuilding the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be untouched for further attempts at fixing or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Migrating to new Mac, keep some apps in the old.

I have just migrated from my old MacBook to a new MacBookPro.
I have a bunch of applications buyed trought the AppStore which are now living happy in my new MacBookPro.
Now I would like to do a clean install in my old MacBook and try to sell it second hand. Some of the apps purchased have no utility in the new mac (OSX Lion and new versions of iPhoto and iMovie) since I have now new versions preinstalled in the new mac, but will be valuable in the old one (and I have paid for them).
Is there any problem if I use the same Apple Id in AppStore at the same time in both computers. Will I be able to download again in the old Mac those apps not installed in the new one? Since the versions I have are probably older then current ones in the AppStore, will this be a problem?

If you had accepted the iLife apps on the older mac, you will be creating a problem for the next owner, who won't be able to accept those apps. You can't get around it through a clean install.
You could do the future owner a favour and contact iTS to unadopt ownership from that old Mac.

  • After migrating to new mac, email folders are lost.

I used Migration Assistant to transfer files and data from my old MacBook Air to my new MacBook Air. Everything seems to have transferred just fine, except for my email folders. I have tried plugging in Time Machine to restore them from my backups on my old mac, but the new mac doesn't recognize backups on the old one, so I can't access it through Time Machine while in the mail program. So then I tried searching for my mail files, which (according to what I've read) should be in Library/Mail, but I have no Mail folder that I can find by that path (or, really, by any other). I believe both macs are running Mountain Lion.

That Library folder is actually the one in your home folder, which is hidden. You can view it by clicking the Go menu in Finder while holding the Option key down - you'll then see a shortcut to Library.
The mail is held in ~/Library/Mail/V2, inside folders named for each mail account. You should be able to use the File - Import Mailboxes menu in Mail to retrieve them.

  • How do I get my old printer "HP Laserjet 4mv" to work on my newer Macs with OSX?

How do I get my old printer "HP Laserjet 4mv" to work on my newer Macs with OSX?
There is no HP support for this old printer. I have tried to connect via ethernet (thru ethernet router), and it does not show up in printer preferences. The printer worked fine on system 9x but when I went to my new macs with system X no luck. This is a great B&W printer that prints at 18 x 24". I would like to keep it and not junk it, but its been sitting on my desk unused for some time now. Any thoughts or JUNK IT! Thanks, R.T.

Does anyone at Apple have help for this sort of question - I too have an old printer (HP LaserJet 5MP) that I would like to keep using on my Mac. (Mac OSX 10.6.8).
I got it working by getting a USB cord that connects to it - but every once in a while it just stops working for weeks. The mac 'sees' it and it sends the data because the printer lights start blinking but then it just doesn't do anything. Is there no one who can tell me (and raterada) how to get some new life into these old printers. I would rather not add this (and a new toner cart) to the landfill just yet. . .

Using 2 displays, connected via HDMI and thunderbolt
Been on to support a number of times now - is anyone experiencing the same issues?

    BUMP.
I actually showed this to Apple geniuses when I took my computer to the apple store, and it's still here. In console it says:
    kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: -128
I don't know if that's related or not, but maybe helps?

  • Time Machine after migration to new Mac

So, I just got a new Mac, and used the option to copy settings and files from a Time Machine volume to the new machine. Now that everything's run, though, I can't use Time Machine to backup the new Mac -- it says "Volume not found". I've Googled a bit, but most of the troubleshooting seems to assume that the drive is missing or won't mount -- the drive is there, but the Time Machine software won't use it.
    What are my options here?

    Hi VK
    A supplementray question:
I have one i-mac happily backing up with Time Machine to an external hard drive.
I have just bought a second i-mac (stops the fighting!) and propose to use migration assistant to move my [admin] account from the old to the new i-mac leaving two other accounts on the old one. I see from your posts that it seems as if Time Machine will start a new back up series for the new i-mac's back ups. But what about the old i-mac? Will that continue to extend the existing Time Machine back up files, albeit without my transferred account and its files? If so, should I partition the external drive and start the new back ups from the new i-mac on this new partition. I'd like to end up with the old i-mac continuing to build its Time Machine back ups (less my account and its files) and have a new back up series from the new i-mac building to a separate partition on the external drive.
Does this make sense? I can't see an answer in the forum to what must be a reasonably common issue in this expandin mac world.

  • Unable to open indesign after migration to new mac all other programs open and work.

Unable to open indesign after migration to new mac all other programs open and work. Why? Running Yosemite 10.10.1 Indesign CS5

The keyword is "migration." Migrating or copying files for Adobe applications usually does not work. Not all of the necessary subsidiary files are copied to the right location.
You'll need to first clean up the mess with this tool:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
Then download an installer from here:

If you are syncing using iCloud, try going to System Preferences/iCloud (computers) and checking Safari. If it is checked, try deselecting it, wait 10-15 seconds, and then check it again.

Macs with a FireWire port will also boot happily from an External drive. You don't even need to open the MacBook.
Some users buy a drive they would like to have as a future Internal drive, and also buy an external enclosure. They get the External set up the way they want it, then swap with the Internal drive.
