Cannot mount a .dmg file

I just received a Slingbox Pro for the holidays. I downloaded their software, which is in the form of a dmg file. After the download it would not mount. The people at SlingBox are clueless. I'm waiting for a Mac specialist to call me back.
Any idea why it is not mounting? Just as a test I downloaded iTunes because it too is a dmg file and it mounted. They think it is some setting regarding a firewall or the like. Help...

That means that perhaps the file you downloaded got a little messed up on its way to your computer, or perhaps the checksum information wasnt included in the original file. Disk images have checksums to ensure the integrity of the disk image is ok. It works by summing up the number of bits and bytes in the image/file according to a summation algorithm that will give you a specific "checksum" number. The file should contain the checksum number (created and embedded in the file when the original disk image was created) that your computer compares to it's checksum number that it gets when it runs the same algorithm upon mounting the disk image. If the image is intact, then the checksums will match, but if the original checksum is missing or they dont match, then the disk will be avoided for fear of corrupt data, etc.
I'd recommend re-downloading the file, but if you want to try one more thing with this one, open "Disk Utility" and in the preferences uncheck the "Verify checksum" option. Then go to the file menu and select the option to open a disk image and hope it mounts without checksum verification. If it's just a checksum error where the checksum number is missing, then the contents should be fine and you should be able to install the program, but if there's a problem with the disk image then its likely the installer files will be corrupted and you will get errors. Its worth a shot...

  • Try to mount a dmg file -- Input/Output error

I have certainly searched thru postings, but I cannot quite find a solution.
[1] An external FireWire drive holds a lot of dmg files of application installers.
[2] Double-clicking some, not all, of them results in an Input/Output error.
[3] Toast is always able to mount them.
[4] When the error happens, an attempt to copy the dmg file onto the Desktop results in another error message "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "<name>.dmg" could not be read or written. (Error code -365)". At this point, clicking on OK brings up a Copy window which hangs. The only way out is to Force-Quit the FInder.
What should I do to rectify these issues?

    I appreciate your suggestions.
The external drive in question is OWC's Mercury Elite-AL Pro with FireWire 800 (2) and 400 (1) ports
It was purchased in February, 2008. Its original connection was thru FireWire 800 to my G5 Tower.
    [1] Ports
The G5 has only one FireWire 800 port, while the OWC enclosure has two.
So, I used the other FireWire 800 port on the OWC.
The same intermittent I/O error in mounting dmg files.
    [2] Cables
I tried another FireWire 800 cable with either of the two FireWire 800 ports on the OWC.
The same intermittent I/O error in mounting dmg files.
So, I switched the connection to FireWire 400 between my G5 and the OWC.
No I/O errors after trying to mount numerous dmg files.
    [3] MacBook Pro
I disconnected the OWC and connected it to a MacBook Pro's FireWire 800 port.
No I/O errors after trying to mount numerous dmg files.
From [1], [2], and [3] above, can I deduce that something is wrong with the FireWire 800 port on my G5 Tower? I thought that both FireWire 800 and 400 ports on the G5 Tower were controlled by the same chip.
    Please advise.

Cannot install a .dmg file. It is associated with the wrong file and I don't know which is the right file.
    Can anyone help?

That is a Disk Utility image. You can find Disk Utility in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder on your hard drive.

You can download and install on your system from Adobe's website.  Have you already opened the box you have received?  If not, you can return it for an exchange.  In the meantime you can download the trial version from this link:

I am not sure if the Windows Serial number will work on your Mac system.
    Good luck.

  • Cannot Create Bootcamp.dmg - File too Lage

    Hi,
I am trying to create a clone of Bootcamp WIN XP by using DISK UTILITY. The external hard disk is on FAT32 format. Same as my bootcamp.
When I try to create NEW IMAGE of the Bootcamp, I am prompted with the message "Cannot Create Bootcamp.dmg - File too large"
The size of my bootcamp is about 35 GB. The external hard disk has a capacity of 250 GB and i partition one section of 35 GB for creating the image file.
How do I resolve this issue? How else can I clone my bootcamp WIN XP?

You're trying to put a 35GB file image into a 35GB partition? I don't think that will work, since there's some overhead used by OSX for any partition. I would have created a 40GB partition for a 35 GB disk image.
But I might be misunderstanding your question.

  • Cannot mount a .dmg with a doube click

    Hi,
Since a couple of months I cannot mount a .dmg by double clicking on it. I have to drag it first to Disk Utility and double click it there.
It is not very important but if anyone could tell me how to restore the original way, I would appreciate.
Intel core 2 duo, Mac OS 10.4.11

It can be done either way. In the 'Open with' dialog you can select the checkbox to always use the selected application, or, as you say, you can set it within the Get Info dialog. The two routes actually use the same underlying dialog if the currently set application needs to be changed.
    Glad it fixed the problem!

  • I cannot successfully download .dmg files including Firefox updates. I can do it on Safari. Why?

When I try to download .dmg files with firefox, I get a box that asks if I want to Open with [choose] or Save File. Not sure what if any application to use to open it. So I try to save it but it doesn't save the .dmg file. So I use Safari. When I click the download button (as I did to get Firefox 4.0 for the Mac) in Safari, it automatically starts to download and creates the image to drag the image into the application folder. Why can't my Firefox do this whereas Safari cannot? This happens on my desktop at home and at work, both Macs; both using Max 10.6.6.

Pandora may either not be available in the language or country you are using.  This is likely the reason.
Or your iPhone may be restricted.  Check Settings > General > Restrictions

  • Can't mount a .dmg file I created yesterday. "invalid argument"

I created two encrypted .dmg files yesterday using Disk Utility.  They both mounted just fine yesterday and I haven't touched them since.  I just now went to mount one of them again and it said "the following disk images could not be opened. (name).dmg  reason: invalid argument.
I've seen some articles in here about the "invalid argument" error coming up on .dmg files created by a 3rd party, but the advice seems to boil down to "get a new copy of the disk"  but obviously these are things I created myself so there are no other copies.  And I deleted the files that I put on the .dmg's after I tested them yesterday and they both seemed to work.
    Any suggestions?

Update: I shut the computer down last night and restarted it this morning, and it worked.  But does anybody know what happened so that I don't repeat it?

  • Cannot mount an ISO file OEL 6.4

    [root@collabn1 dev]# mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /media
mount: no medium found on /dev/sr0
I'm trying to mount the OEL 6.4 ISO file which is attached to VirtualBox 4.3.x on my Macbook.
I have OEL 6.4 installed on Vbox, but now I want to mount the ISO. Is there missing tools that need to be installed or something else?

There is no additional software or tools required. The error message means that you do not have the disk image attached to your virtual machine. You first need to attach the iso image to your virtual machine by using the VM devices menu, or by dragging and dropping the iso disk image file onto the disk icon in the virtual machine toolbar. Then you issue the following command:
    mount -o loop /dev/cdrom /media

  • Cannot download any .dmg files to completion.

Hi, I have a brand new MacBook Pro 13" but I didn't like the short name I used so I quick did a clean install with the 'erase and install' option and changed the shortname (I realize how silly this sounds - should probably have put more thought into it the first time).
Then I upgraded to the Snow Leopard that was included then I installed the applications CD. Using Safari, I tried downloading different dmg's numerous times but I keep getting this error 'Operation couldn't be completed. Safari domain error 2'.
I took the firefox dmg from my other computer but both downloads stopped at 1.2Mb. I'm not sure what happened - is it possible I messed things up when I changed the shortname and if so should I just do another clean install?
Thanks for reading this far, any help would be much appreciated.

I'd do another reinstall, but this time reinstall all the stuff, including the applications. Try downloading and, if it works, get a bootable, external HD (preferably FireWire, since it's 40-50% faster than USB 2 and designed for data transfers), make a bootable backup/clone before updating/upgrading, and ensure that it's bootable and works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall or reset anything. See these for details:

    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html

Finally, upgrade to Snow Leopard and try downloading again.

  • Disk Image (.dmg) files no longer mount

Since updating to 10.4.9, I cannot mount disk image files. When I double click on them, I get an error dialog from Finder which reads, 'The Following disk images failed to mount.' Reason: 'Device not configured.' I suspect that some essential software, 'Disk Copy' and/or 'Diskimagemounter' did not, for one reason or another install with the rest of the update. My computer did crash when the update was almost complete, but after a restart, everything seemed to work OK, except for not being able to mount disk images, which in this age of downloadable software basically makes your Mac dead in the water. Any solutions, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

Your Mac crashed before the update installation process was complete and before the prompt to restart?
If so - Houston, we have a problem. ;~)
Did you check your boot volume for any directory problems with Disk First Aid repair via Disk Utility when booted from your Tiger install disc immediately before the install and did you quit all running applications before the install?
Regardless and as a first step, check this link for system troubleshooting procedures and when doing so, follow all steps/instructions in the order provided.
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/repairprocess.html
Test if this resolves the mount disk images problem since you should download the 10.4.9 Combo Update and re-install 10.4.9 since your Mac crashed before the install was 100% complete.

Regarding the .dmg problem see this thread:

As to the external, does the drive appear in Disk Utility? If so, can you see how it is formatted?

  • Can't mount dmg files, Applications button in sidebar automatically closes Finder, and Flash won't work in browsers

Although these problems don't seem to be related, they all started occurring at the exact same time. To reiterate
    1) Any time I try to mount a .dmg file, the setup window automatically closes
    2) Any time I go into Finder and click on "Applications" button in the sidebar, the Finder window automatically closes
    3) Flash player does not work in any browser
I have tried repairing permissions and this doesn't work.
    Can anyone help?

Have you repaired the Disk. You must boot into the Recovery HD to repair the disk. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1782

Hi, I am suing Mac Leopard 10.5.6..I download skype from its official website, and I can't mount the DMG file. I tried download it again and restart the computer but it doesn't work. It gave a reason: "Not recognized" for Image "skype 2.7.0.330.dmg"

    HI,
*" I am suing Mac Leopard 10.5.6..I download skype from its official website, and I can't mount the DMG file."*
    Apple doesn't write Skype software.
Try repairing disk permissions. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.
