Cannot mount Xsan volume on Mac Pro

Hi,
I installed a new workstation - a first Mac Pro in our PPC Xsan deployment. I installed Xsan, then latest updates. However, I cannot mount an Xsan volume on this workstation. This is an abstract from the log:

Your help would be highly appreciated.

Hi,
I am accessing this WS via ARD, so public LAN is definitely there. I have not connected the "Xsan" network (but it should be no problems communicating the Xsan traffic over this single LAN connection).
With the firewall, the situation is more strange. When I try to open the Firewall settings on Sharing, there is a dialog "Other firewall software is running on this computer." I googled this and it seems that this was a common problem on 10.3. They suggest to delete com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist file but it is not there on 10.4.
"sudo ipfw list" shows this:
00001 allow udp from any 626 to any dst-port 626
65535 allow ip from any to any
Any ideas on how to make Firewall behave as expected? I will try to reinstall if I don't receive a reply.
Thanks.

  • Backup Controller cannot mount XSAN Volume

    Hi Guys,
I've really have a big problem regarding the XSAN that I've just setup: There are 3 Xserves connected to the SAN - one for the main controller, one for backup and another one for fileserver. After a fresh install of the Leopard Server 10.5.6 on all servers and fresh install of Xsan 2.0 updated to 2.1.1, I tried creating an SAN from the main controller, I added first the main and backup controllers, authenticated them properly and was successful adding them to the SAN. After this, I created the volume and it mounted properly on the main controller. What I don't understand is that whenever I try to mount the volume to the backup controller, it is saying unable to mount and even I tried forcing it to mount in terminal using the command xsanctl mount VOLNAME, its giving me an error saying
"unable to mount volume, Cannot mount XSAN volume error code: 5"
What is that error message? When I tried typing cvadmin to the main controller, it only gave me this message:
    Main Controller:
File System Services (* indicates service is in control of FS)
    1>*XSAN[0] located on 10.0.0.101:49930 (pid 317)
    Select FSM "XSAN"
When I type the same cvadmin to the backup controller, it gave me this message:
    Backup Controller:
File System Service (* indicates service is in control of FS)
    1> XSAN[1] located on 10.0.0.102:50384 (pid 331)
    No FSSs are active
    Select FSM "none"
What is happening? both servers are having a DNS name. Before I created the SAN, from the authenticate window, the server name is just the IP address of the Ethernet 0 (first ethernet port). Now whenever I fire up Xsan Admin, both controllers are now offline and if you authenticate them, the server name info suddenly changed from IP address to a DNS Name (e.g. from 194.170.34.12, changed to hct-mdc.ad.hct.ac.ae) which even if I type my admin username and password cannot authenticate saying "server not found in network"
I really don't know now what to do and they need to fix the issue asap.
I would really appreciate your help guys!
    Thanks.

  • Unable to mount disks: why does Mac Pro think it is NTFS?

We have a 2006 and a 2008 Mac Pro. Each has four internal disk drives. The 2008 one has disk 1 & 2 concatenated as the boot drive and 3 & 4 concatenated as the backup drive. Super Duper was used to make an image backup. Right before we moved, the disk started clicking. Now it doesn't boot.
First I tried the secret keypress at boot time to switch boot disks to the other one with no luck. Then I said to myself, why not just mount the disk using the boot drive from the other mac? So I did. It doesn't mount!
Disk Utility shows the two drives in the bay as "RAID slice" and "disk2". I know they are all HFS+ Mac disks. Why is the error message think it is NTFS?
As confusing as the error message is, any ideas on how I can get the files off this disk? I'm thinking my next try should be Disk Warrior or something like that?
    Disk Utility:
    Verify and Repair volume “disk2”
** /usr/local/bin/ntfsfix has been disabled because of volume corruption issues.
** If you still want to try fixing your volume, use /usr/local/bin/ntfsfix from the command line...
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
Mac OS X 10.5.8--the 2008 mac has the server version.
We all think the boss should buy us all new Mac Pros with SSDs.

No need to put down $$$ for new, but it is over due time to upgrade to Lion or later, and an SSD is a cheap way to get a huge improvement.
10.5.8 is not being supported. 106.8 still is.
500GB SSD is more than enough for system, 250GB should be fine, prices are $250 and $140 range, and $12 for a sled adapter.
I would not use those drives as concatenated, not for system or backup. And I would not keep data and system on the same volume. One you undo and redo and get more current storage and probably RAM and newer OS you should be fine, a new GPU probably, but all of that is cheaper and doable.
Amazon has FBDIMMs in the $25 2 x 2GB set for 2006-2008, and 16GB makes a nice base system.

  • Oddball client not mounting XSan Volumes

Background: My client, a TV News broadcast station, had Apple and a third-party design and install a Apple based XSan storage and network. They ran all new fiber and gigabit ethernet to each station to use the XSan. It has been working great, with the exception noted below.
Setup: 2 MD Controllers, 1 XServe, 4 XRaids, each make up two 2 large TB volumes (raid 5, stripped together).
XServe, XRAID, MD controllers, and all clients are all connected together on a Fibre and Fiber Optic network using QLogic switches. SUBNET: 10.200.1.x.
Ethernet Network, also connected all the above together on HP Gigabit Switches. SUBNET: 10.100.1.x The public WAN is made available on this subnet by a connection to the HP switches. Still getting details on how this was done.
Everything is running OS X 10.4.8 or better, XSan File System 1.4.
    Setup
There are 8 workstations (edit bays) that act as infusion and editing stations. Each station has two XSans volumes mounted NEWS01 and NEWS02. They have the odd numbered bays use NEWS01 and the even numbered bays use NEW02.
    PROBLEM
All bays mount the XSan volumes, except one. FCP08 will not mount the XSan volumes. We have rebooted the workstation, and even went to the extreme of shutting down the entire setup all bays and MD controllers, File Servers, etc.. then bringing everything backup up. Same problem.
Based on some forum discussion, we have tried the following:
    * Ensured that there is no empty mount point in /Volumes
    * Uninstalled all XSan Software and resinstalled v1.4 from Apple's website.
    * Removed the client from the XSan Admin, and readded it, made sure to enter valid serial number, etc..
    * Verified that all fibers are working, all link lights look good, and you can ping across the MD network.
When you use the XSan admin from either FCP08 (edit bay 08) or from the server, and you add both MD XSans to it, you see the client, and you click on the client and click either Mount (read-only) or Mount (Read/write).
It will show "Mounting..." and then it will flip back to "not mounted". The only feedback we have received so far is "ACCESS DENIED". All affinity setting are set to rwxrwxrwx (wide open), and all the volumes and workstation logins all have the same access to the volumes. I can not find any restrictive permissions anywhere.
I plan on trying to move them away from a /etc/hosts type setup to a proper DNS Server running on their XServe using the DNS Server function of OS X Server. But currently all edit bay stations have the same /etc/hosts file installed, which accounts for MD and ethernet networks.
ANY IDEAS what is wrong with this workstation? With the setup?
I have had extreme ideas from some who have said that we need to blitz the entire client, and reinstall the operating system. I am not willing to go down that route, since each edit bay was built manually without an image (another aspect I will remedying soon). It will take sometime to rebuild this edit bay client if I that is the only solution.
The only this question I have if that is the popular opinion, is what is different from a client OS install and the existing one regarding the XSan? This are edit bays, not private workstations, and no one installs any extra software or surfs the net, etc.. They are used for ingest and editing only.
    HELP!
      Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Hi,
You could check if it is Fibre Channel related:
    from a terminal do a cvlabel -l
this should give you a list of the lun's in your volume.
When this tool does not show luns, you might have a zoning issue.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Cannot install FCP X on Mac Pro (2,1).  Graphics card issue.

I have a Mac Pro 2,1 (2 x 3 Ghz Quad Xeon, 16 GB RAM, and ATI Radeon X1900 XT (512 MB)) AND I cannot install FCP X.  It says graphics card not supported. What do I need to run FCP X?  If I need a better GPU, what card is recommended for this machine?  It's hard to believe I can run the software on my Macbook Air but not my Mac Pro supercomputer...

Radeon HD 5770 (as inserted into the current MacPros) will do it. Make sure it's the unit bought from Apple, not a big box store.
Plenty of discussions about it, here's one:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2544029?start=0&tstart=0
Your "super computer" is more of a super computer than mine, but it did start life in 2007. Things have moved on... your MacPro isn't obsolete, by any means... in fact your original graphics card is probably just about to give up anyway! Mine did last year (I had an older card in a MP 1.1) and am glad I changed it.

  • Unable to mount XSAN volume on client workstation

We just reimaged one of our machines and we are now unable to mount the xsan volume. Originally when the machine hooked up the IP was wrong and the XSAN couldn't see it. This has been fixed and the XSAN sees it now and it is authenticated, but when we try to mount the volume we get this error

For a description of web standards see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_standards
Microsoft, through Internet Explorer, have introduced many additions to the standards. Those additions are frequently not supported in other browsers. This means that web sites can be written with code that works in Internet Explorer but will not work in other browsers.
On the other hand, Firefox has been built to comply with web standards, so some sites will not work in Firefox if they are poorly written.
The daily deal hunt site does not follow web standards and has some code that does not work in a browser such as Firefox or Chrome. This will be something that the owners of the site will need to fix if they want their site to work in all browsers.

The source is on the same Volume.

  • Cannot install Mountain Lion on Mac Pro 4,1 (2009) - can anyone help?

    Hi All,
I have a 2009 Mac Pro - purchased 2nd hand in January. I am trying to install Mountain Lion and had the same issues as other Mac Pro 4,1 owners have had.
I've tried installing from the installer exactly as downloaded from the App Store - this results in a grey screen, and I have to re-install Snow Leopard to get the machine running again.
I've tried creating a bootable USB stick. This boots into the installer, but then I get the message "Mac OS X could not be installed. Try reinstalling." which is the most ridiculous error message I've ever read.
I've unplugged all peripherals except keyboard/mouse and one monitor. I've removed all extra drives from inside, except for the system drive. I've removed the wireless card. And I still can't install Mountain Lion. If it had cost more than £14 I've be rather upset at the moment.
Does anyone have any sage advice that will get me running ML?
I do have a full error log I'm happy to share, if that will help.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Cannot get audio working on Mac Pro in Windows XP

Hey all, I've got a Mac Pro (late 2006, 3GHz), and I'm running Windows XP. Trying to get audio working, installed BootCamp using the Leopard Install DVD, but no dice. No sound at all, not audio devices showing up in Device Manager/Control Panel, you know the usual places.
Ive retried the installer, when it gets to SigmaTel audio drivers it says "An Instance of this installer is already running". I'm assuming that's a bad thing but I don't know how to fix it....

I may have a solution for you.
Install *[_THIS WINDOWS UPDATE_|http://files.filefront.com/kb835221exe/;9494950;/fileinfo.html]* while in windows.
Once you have installed the above update then repair your bootcamp driver by inserting the Leopard disk and choosing repair. This will repair the drivers. Once this is done, you audio should work.

  • I Cannot Mount DL-DVD on MacBook Pro Anymore!

I recently updated to the latest firmware update (macbook pro software update 1.1) a few days ago for my MacBook Pro. Since this, my computer will not mount nearly all of my DL-DVD discs that I previously burnt (on the same computer). I did the SMC reset many times. Still will not recognize the discs.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Or at least a reason why this is suddenly happening?

  • Cannot Mount Boot Volume

My iBook G4 stopped booting properly this morning. I was installing the Adobe After Effects CS3 trial when the screensaver came on after a while, but when I moved the mouse to deactivate it, the authentication dialog did not appear as usual, so I force shut down the iBook. However, it subsequently failed to boot properly (i.e. does not boot past the grey/blue screen with the spinner). At the time of malfunction, I had an external hard disk and a disk image mounted.
I booted from the Mac OS X Install CD, but Disk Utility was unable to mount my boot volume (though it could show the volume information and verify the disk) to fix permissions. I also tried booting in single user mode; upon typing the command "mount -uw /", I got the following error messages:
    jnl: replay_journal: from: 301568 to: 7035904 (joffset 0x41e000)
    disk0s9: I/O error.
jnl: updatefsblock: failed to update block 6026 (ret 5)
jnl: journal_open: Error replaying the journal!

    Aug 27 17:54:11 launchd: chown ("/var/launchd/0"): Read-only file system
    mount_hfs: Invalid argument
Hence, I suspect the problem may have something to do with disk journaling, which is enabled on my boot volume. I am quite sure that the volume itself is working fine, since I was able to access my data when it mounted as read-only in single user mode.
Does anyone here know of a possible solution to my problem? I would prefer to avoid a clean install of OS X. I do, however, have a recent back-up (created by Carbon Copy Cloner) on hand. Thanks in advance!
    Regards,
    Liza

Does anyone know of a possible solution? This tip looked promising, but my iBook G4 only starts up in Mac OS X (i.e. cannot boot OS 9). Neither can an OS 9 computer read the iBook's hard disk, since I did not select the option to install Mac OS 9 Disk Drivers when formatting it. I have also tried DiskWarrior, but to no avail.
Since I have a back-up of the disk on hand, I want to reformat the disk, but I cannot accomplish this using Disk Utility when I boot from the Mac OS X Install CD. Do I need any special software?
    Thanks.
    Liza
