Cannot move applications around dock

I used to be able to put iphoto and itunes together, etc etc
Now I'm stuck with them in an order, and I can't move them around.
any ideas ?

Hi everyone.
I think in Leopard we can still easily move and re-arrange the positions of the icons in the Dock, unless the Dock is actually locked as mentioned in the above replies by another program or through Terminal.
But I notice one little Dock behavior in Leopard that might "explain" why we thought it is harder to move/arrange the icons: I think Leopard has made the icons a little more "stubborn", or rather, "harder" to move than in previous OS. If you click on one icon and try to move it, positioning it roughly parallel/same height between the left and right icons, you'd notice the icon do not move, i.e. you can place it in a new position as you wanted; But if you click on the intended icon and "force" it slightly towards the bottom of the Dock pane, like as if almost forcing it out of the screen downwards, then you'd discover you can start positioning it in a new place in the Dock.
Hope I am making some sense here.
Cheers

  • Cannot move applications to previous pages from iPhone home screen

This is a recent issue that I just noticed today. When I press and hold on an app from my iPhone home screen, I can move it around within its own page, or move it to succeeding pages. However, the phone will not allow me to move the app to a PREVIOUS page! It quickly tries to move to the the left, until it resets itself on the current page its on. My only way around this is to synch the apps from iTunes. Has anyone else been experiencing this bug?

Thanks for the advice, but this still does not work. Again, I've had no problems moving apps between home screen pages until now. This seems to have occurred right after downloading an app from the app store today. I'm running OS 3.1.2, and the phone will literally "pull back" an app I'm trying to move to a previous page, whether I move it to any previous page (currently using four pages of apps at the moment). It will let me move an app to a subsequent page, but then it's stuck there (i.e. it cannot be moved back to the page I moved it from). The only way to move it back is through iTunes. What the heck is going on here?

  • Cannot move application to trash -- error msg claims it is "open".

I am trying to trash the item "Canon IJ Network Scan Utility". When I attempt to move the .app file to the trash I get an error message "The item “Canon IJ Network Scan Utility” can’t be moved to the Trash because it’s open".
When I engage the "Force Quit" application to verify whether indeed the application might be open it does not appear in the Force Quit window. Also, when I double click the application absolutely nothing happens -- it does not open. Finally, when I single click the app and then hit "command-q" to quit the application if indeed it were open in some invisible way, I get an an error sound. All this tells me that the app s either NOT open, or is open on such an invisible low level that I have NO way of closing this application. How can I delete such a legacy application (which litters my menu bar with an ugly icon which is why I want to delete it).
Please help!! Is there such a thing as a "force-trash" command? Or can I force this app to visibly open, so I can close it? Or can I in some other (i.e., terminal) way close this app for good so I can trash it? Thanks!!!

Use the Activity Monitor in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to quit it; there may be additional processes used by the software as well. You may want to use a proper uninstaller if one exists.

Mail icon moves around dock independently

Might be a corrupted .plist ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/LIbrary/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.dock.plist file to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac.

  • Cannot add items to DOCK. Dock bar near end?

I cannot add items to the dock and the dock bar is near the end of the dock listing. I cannot move the bar.

    Please clearify...
You can move the doc with the Dock system preferences to left, bottm, or right.  Or using something like TinkerTool vertically left side or right side.
As for adding items, generally applications are to the left of the divider (toward the right end) and other stuff to the right of the divider.  You add stuff by dragging it into the dock and option drag it out to remove it (or control click and use the options contextual).
Are thses things not working for you?

  • Cannot open finder in dock

i cannot open finder windows(documents, downloads) from dock and i cannot acess trash.

Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to the state it’s in now.
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the menu bar. From the Library folder, move the following items to the Trash, if they exist:
    Application Support/Dock
    Caches/com.apple.dock
and move the following item(s) to the Desktop:
    Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.dock.*.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.dock.db
    Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
Here “*” stands for a long string of letters and numbers. Log out, log back in, and test. If you still have the issue, put the item(s) on the Desktop back where they came from and post again. Otherwise, move the items on the Desktop to the Trash and empty.

  • Unable to move applications/documents between spaces--why?

I've noticed this the last couple of times I've used spaces on my _*Macbook Pro:_*
I'll have 4 spaces, each with a different application or document. When I try and move a document or application to a different space, I simply can't. It's as if the applications are frozen in those spaces.
In other words, I can't move applications between spaces. They seem frozen in their spaces.
In both instances, my Macbook Pro is plugged into a Powerpoint projector using the adapter. My Macbook is set to mirror displays so as to project on the screen.
    No problems pre-Snow Leopard
    Any ideas?

Never mind I just fixed the problem by searching around the community and finding this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4024312
Anyway it was as simple as holding down the application in the dock and just selecting "Options -> Assign to -> None (rather than All Desktops).

  • Cannot launch applications sometimes

    Hi there,
I've got a knarly issue here. After a certain period of time (a couple of days for instance given that I leave the machine switched on) I cannot log into my computer via the screen saver password prompt (I just get the spinning ball, no login dialog displays). Additonally, at this time, I cannot ssh to the machine (whereupon I normally can). Finally, I have been doing something on the machine (using various applications) and then find myself unable to launch any other application via the dock (bouncing icon eventually times out). The latter problem has happened twice. In this instance I can still activate applications that are already running (they come to the front etc.). Additionally logging out in this instance is a problem and I have to force-quit things to get through the logout (including the Finder). Finally when it gets to actually logging out, I don't get the dialog to login again (just the clock style progress indicator with the bars which goes on forever).
Very mysterious. I've a suspicion that the above problems are related.
I have done a couple of things to this machine that may be relevant: increased the RAM; and (ii) updated the Pioneer DVR-110D firmware (this was a third party drive that I bought given that the original drive stopped working).
I have run memtest on the memory with several passes. Everything reports ok. I realise that memtest won't necessarily report all faults, but I know that if it does report a fault, there's definitely a fault. I want to get my hands on the Apple Hardware Profiler to do another test - anyone know how to get it?
Most importantly can anyone explain any of the symptoms I'm seeing? The machine is obviously still alive given the spinning ball when trying to wake up from sleep in the screen saver, and activation of existing application.
Any clues and diagnostic ideas are greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    -C

re: SSH. I presume you've enabled Remote Login on the
affected Mac? Remote Login has to be enabled before
the problem occurs if you are to SSH into a
frozen/hung Mac. However, depending on the problem,
the affected Mac may be so frozen or hung that you
simply can't get in via SSH.
I can normally log on to the machine using SSH. In fact, at one time, I established an SSH connection and then the problem occurred subsequently. My SSH connection, having already been established, allowed me to look around the machine.
In lieu of the AHT, and as noted in my AHT FAQ, you
    can use Micromat
TechTool Pro 4 for hardware testing. You want to
use version 4.0.4 or later with Tiger, but it is best
to use the latest version, which is 4.1.2. You'll
want the CD so you can boot from it to run the
    hardware tests.
I will look into this software now.
Another small update: given that the machine went weird again yesterday I managed to mount a volume via AppleShare and have a look in /var/logs. However I didn't see anything really out of the ordinary. Given that these logs get archived on reboot, any ideas on something that I might look for?
Once again the symptoms are that: I cannot su to any other account (whereas I normally can); and (ii) I cannot launch applications (also whereas I normally can of course). Apps are launched via the Finder Dock. I'm suspection that (ii) is caused by . The fact that I cannot su to any other user is most weird.
The machine is now running without the non-Apple memory, Activity Monitor is running and I've disabled passwords being required to wake the computer up. Thus if it does go down again I should be able to do some more diagnosis.

  • Cannot reposition applications in panel after Xfce 4.8 update

    Hi,
Just pulled through the latest updates, which included Xfce 4.8. However, I now find I cannot move my applications around on the panel. Looking through the settings I could not find a way to enable this feature. I have also tried renaming ~/.config/xfce4 to enable the default settings, but no joy there...
Is there a way this can be done, or is this feature now unavailable?
    Regards,

if youre not afraid of gnome depends, dockbarx is a fantasic task list replacement w/dnd and grouping. Adds to the xfce panel as an xfapplet.
Besides, you can use any panel you want...gnome/lxde/tint/awn...and so on with xfce. A panel doesnt not a DE make.

  • Cannot move [MOV filename]: It is in use by another person or program

Hello. I have recently installed version 7.41 of Quicktime for Windows (had the same problem with 7.4). What appears to be happening is that when I boot my computer, without opening any programs, if I go to a location where I have a MOV (Quicktime movie file) file, and try to cut and paste it to another folder it gives me the message:
Cannot move [MOV filename]: It is in use by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.
I have found by using some memory/file monitoring tools that EXPLORER.EXE is opening a handle to the file (accessing it for some reason) and then holding on to that handle thus not allowing me to move the file from one directory to another. By forcing the handles closed, it then allows me to move it, but then immediately maintains it open again, and cannot move it again.
This only happens with QuickTime MOV files. I have renamed the file to another format, just for kicks basically, and it works fine using another extension. I have also reassociated the MOV files with another app, but still has the same issues.
I have not run or any applications before this point and especially not anything related to QuickTime. Does anyone have any insight into what might be happening?

    Hello akaMisterAnderson
I am having the exact problem when I try to rename or move the MOV file. I use Unlocker to determine which process is locking the MOV file and like you have said: it is the Explorer process.
I hope there will be a patch for this problem soon and if you know of any solution, please inform me.
    Thanks.
