Cannot move files to trash from 2nd internal drive

I have waht appear to be a profile specific issue that prevents me from moving files from a 2nd drive in my machine to the trash when using my standard profile.
I to to my 2nd internal drive and when I drag a file to the trash it asks me "Are you sure you want to delete "xxxxx.jpg"  The item will be deleted immediately, You can't undo this action. If I click OK the item is delted and does not do to the trash. It aks liek is is an external drive, not an internal drive
But when I delete a file from my Macintosh HD drive the item goes to the trash as it should.
If I log into my Admin account, the files from the second internal drive moves to the trash normally. I have set my normal login from standard to admin and it stil has the issue, I also have run disk utility and disk warrior and rebuilt the directory, but it has not changed the problem
ANy ideas?

The drive's invisible Trashes folder might be corrupt. Try deleting it by entering this Terminal command:
rm -rf /Volumes/drivename/.Trashes
Then unmount the drive and remount it.
Make sure you have the data on the drived backed up. Mistyping that Terminal command by putting even a space in the wrong place can delete everything on it.

    @stlarxh
I have already got installed gvfs. Interesting thing is that the Trash folder under ~/.local/share/Trash
    have the following permission:
    drwx------ 4 root root 4096 Feb 27 21:57 Trash
On Ubuntu it has this permissions:
    drwx------ 5 saso 1000 4096 Sep 20 10:19 Trash
If i change permission from root to my username i can't delete files at all. Has this got something with group 1000? How can i add group 1000?
    @emk
    my fstab:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    devpts /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
    shm /dev/shm tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0
    /dev/sda3 / ext4 defaults 0 1
    /dev/sda1 /media/Razno ext4 users,auto,errors=remount-ro 0 1
    /dev/sda5 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/sda3 is ArchLinux, /dev/sda1 is a custom partition.

  • Cannot move files to trash; they are deleted immediately!

I can no longer move files to trash and then empty the trash. If I select "move to trash" or drag a file to the trash, I am notified that the file will be deleted immediatley.
How can I change it so that the files remain in the trash until I choose to empty it.
Also, I have gone to "get info" for the trash, and when I try to give myself permission to read & write, I am prompted to give my password, which I do, but then it says "operation could not be completed ... unexptected error, code 136.
    Any ideas.
    Please help.

That message is typical behavior when deleting files from a server, but I suspect your problem isn't going to be answered with that. What do you mean when you say "I try to give myself permission to read & write" for the Trash? Your Trash can is normally an invisible folder called ".Trashes". And by default it should be read and write.

First thing I would try is simply relaunch your Finder.

  • Move iPhoto '11 library from one internal drive to another internal drive?

    Hi everyone!
My wife and I just received our lovely new 27" iMac, which we had custom-configured with both a 256GB SSD and a 2TB drive, both internal.  I have created a fresh user account for myself, and used Migration Assistant to move her account over from our old MacBook Pro.  Of course, Migration Asst. assumes you want everything stored on the boot drive (the SSD in our case), but we want to store the "big stuff" on the 2TB drive (for obvious reasons).
In my wife's account, I created a folder on the 2TB drive (we call that drive "Vault") for my wife's big files.  Inside that folder, I made a "Pictures" folder, and dragged her (~110 gig) iPhoto library into that folder.  After taking ages to copy, starting iPhoto with Option held will let us select that newly-copied library on the Vault, but it will be missing tons of images and thumbnails, even as the "original copy" on the SSD is working exactly as expected.
With the Vault copy selected, I've used iPhoto's built-in rebuild commands (thumbnails, permissions, etc.), but to no avail.  I strongly suspect some sort of permissions weirdness is at play, but I can't for the life of me figure it out.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Huxley
PS  For what it's worth, I tried simply copying the iPhoto library from the MacBook Pro directly to her folder on the Vault, which resulted in very obvious permission problems, including the dreaded "red minus symbol" on the icon in the Finder.
PPS  The new iMac is running Lion and iLife '11, with all updates, while the MacBook Pro was running Snow Leopard and iLife '11 with all updates

If the Library works correctly on the SSD but the copy on the Vault is "missing tons of images and thumbnails" then that suggests that the copy has gone wrong, no? Try the copy again.
Other things to consider: is the Vault formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?
Set the Vault to ignore Ownership and Permissions - which you can do in the Get Info window

  • What is the best way to move an iPhoto library from one internal drive to another internal drive?

the drive where my iPhoto library is store is just about full.  I have a second internal SSD that I'd like to move (not copy) the library to.  What is the best way to do that and still ensure that iPhoto will access the library in its new location?

Just drag the iPhoto Library package from the one drive to the second disk.  Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select the library in it's new location on the second disk.  Once you're satisfied that it is working satisfactorliy you can delete the copy on the first disk.

  • Cannot move files to trash

I inadvertantly moved a slew of .psd (Adobe Photoshop Image) files over from my PC to my MacBook while bringing over my jpgs. Those files are sitting in my Pictures folder, and when I attempt to move them to the trash, I receive the following error messages:
*The item "filename" is in use right now and cannot be opened. Try again when the current task (such as moving or copying an item or emptying the trash) is complete.*
    AND...
*Some of the items you are moving are in use by another application. Moving hte items can cause problems with the application using them. Are you sure you want to move these items?*
As far as I can tell, there are no applications using these items. Also, they are shown as "Zero KB" in size by the finder.
    Thanks.

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder, and then select all of the items in the Finder and only those items. Paste the following into the Script Editor window:
    tell application "Finder"
repeat with this_item in (get selection)
set file type of this_item to "1234"
    end repeat
    end tell
Press the Run button; after the script is complete, you should be able to throw the files away. If you accidentally hit the wrong item with it, create or locate a different document or item of the same kind and post back.

  • Ext HDs: Cannot move file to trash, delete immediately?

Both my external hard drives give this message when I try to delete something, but my flash drive does not do this. Any ideas?

  • Aperture can't move files to trash

My photos are on networked external hard drive, and I have the folder on the drive mounted. However, when I try to delete a photo from this drive within Aperture, I get a message saying "Cannot Move Files to Trash" "You don't have access to the Trash on the master files' volume."
But if I go to that file via finder, I have no trouble deleting it. And getting the info for that volume shows I have read/write privileges.
Any suggestions on how Aperture can gain access to the trash on this volume?
    Thanks,

It doesn't sound like it's an issue with the files themselves, but rather with the trash.
I haven't seen it, but I can see how that could occur. Each volume tends to have its own Trash folder. It's hidden, typically called .Trashes and at the root of the hard drive. I have had Trash-related issues outside of Aperture in the past (likely of my own doing). The issue with problems like these it it's nigh impossible to establish cause and effect… you could do something and not notice the problem for days or even weeks, in a completely un-related way.
I doubt that "Repair Permissions" is responsible for the fix, unless the files were on your boot volume. RP has no effect outside of a boot volume.

    A Espinoza,
The iTunes Media folder is set in Preferences > Advanced, and is the key to most iTunes folder organizational activities.  So I doubt that the automatic deletion will work for files that are somewhere else within the folder structure.
However, I have not experimented with that issue in quite a while, so you are welcome to give it a try in iTunes 11.

  • How do I remove a file to trash from my desktop? when I drag to trash it says I cannot delete

I'm a seasoned iMac user but forgot from the "old days" how to delete a file to trash from the desktop when it says "The item ......can't be moved to the Trash because it can't be deleted". This is a file I downloaded a few days ago. Can you help, please?

Thank you for answering- I must have posted the question twice. Another helpful person helped me solve it. I have to shake my head at my dumb self.....all I needed to do was restart the machine and the file disappeared. A total "duh" moment for this "seasoned" Mac user. Again, thanks for answering.

  • Cannot change file permission / privilege from custom to anything else

After I successfully set up file sharing on my MacBook Pro, my colleague dropped off some files for me in the Drop Box. The problem is, I cannot change the permissions for myself on these files.
When I "Get Info", I have no problems changing the permissions for all other users.
But when I try to change for "myname (Me): custom" to anything else, it remains unchanged.
Btw, even after I click on the lock icon, and enter my password, the "Locked" and "Stationery Pad" checkboxes remain greyed out.
How do I change the permission for (Me) to Read & Write? I am already the Admin on this comp. Is anyone else having this problem?

Solved, at least for me! Check it out.
I also had a bunch (3) of 'users' on both my startup drive (Tiger) and my second internal drive (no system). This happened after I did an 'archive/install' of Leopard on an external FW drive and using Migration Assistant to move the rest of my root-drive files onto the same FW disk.
At some point, probably after restarting from the FW Leopard disk, the 2nd internal drive /Disk_Two, had privileges set to custom for all 3 users and the disk was locked. Disk Utility was grayed out for permission check/repair.
    I tried the terminal command...
    chris$ sudo fsaclctl -p /Volumes/Disk_Two -d
    ...but no luck.
But tonight I am happy! I am using my laptop (Leopard) to make these repairs with the two internal hard drives and the external FW drive of my Dual G5 available through Target Mode.
    Thanks to Niel at
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8823809
    I typed into terminal
    chris$ sudo chflags nouchg /Volumes/Disk_Two
and all is fine. ONE set of proper permissions (was three!).
    chris$ ls -le
    drwxrw-rwx 122 chris chris 4216 Feb 24 22:45 Disk_Two
The startup disk, Macintosh HD, had similar problems, but was not locked. I used the same command...
BUT, as Niel suggests, type up to...
chris$ sudo chflags nouchg <- space
and drag the drive onto terminal. This was important since the Target-Mode drive is called "Macintosh HD 1" since my laptop already has a Macintosh HD.
Finally, ls -le didn't look good after the above maneuver, but when I "get info" and unlock the little keypad at the bottom, all the weird users with 'custom' permissions disappear and I'm left with usual (and wonderful to see again) users which I can once again modify for permissions!

  • Locked Windows/Folder, Cannot Move Files On External Hard Drive

I'm running Tiger 10.4.11 on an iMac and am the only user, and therefore, administrator. I'm encountering a weird, albeit small, problem on one of my external hard drives (Seagate 320 gigs): I have boatloads of video files stored on the drive, but suddenly cannot move files into folders within the drive (I see a white "do not enter" kind of a sign over whatever icon I try to move). I can't move these files off the drive and onto my iMac's internal hard drive, either. I can only delete them. I can add new files to the drive, but then cannot move those either (can only delete them).
The folders and drive are not locked, I have read & write access, etc., so there doesn't seem to be any reason for me to be barred from moving items. Any clues? Many thanks.

Thank you for your reply and kind welcome.
That's a great tip, but that box was already checked, so I'm afraid that wasn't a solution. The problem ended up "solving itself" after I left my machine off for the day while I went to work. I may never know why that error occurred, but I certainly don't care, as long as it doesn't happen again. Take care.
