Cannot Move Objects with Arrows - Ai CS5

For some reason I cannot move objects with my arrow keys in Illustrator cs5. I can drag them and transform-move them but the arrow keys don't work. very annoying.
Any clues as to what I can do to fix this?
Thanks!

Could happen if your keyboard increment value is zero or a very low number.

    Having problems moving a selcected with Selection Tool: the selection does not move.
    Also cannot isolate imported picture as it always seems to be selected, even when deselected: Selection Tool always activates first layer even though I'm on another layer
    Any new imported burshes i make up are not saved, even though file names shows up: only managed to save one brush
    I nearly awlays have to re select stroke width everytime I use selection tools or re open file.
    Are the problems due to compatibility issues with Mac OS and Illustrator CS4, as this new version is know to be very buggy in the industry.

    bottchichellee,
    Illy is Illustrator.
    I apologize for the unavailability of the site, owing to some mess by the webhost. This is an extract:
    Up to Illustrator 10, almost all the preference settings were included in the AIPrefs/Adobe Illustrator Prefs file, and almost all issues with corrupted settings could be solved by deleting or moving it; in some rare cases, moving or deleting the folder holding the settings was required.
    From Illustrator CS on, the preference settings have been spread over a number of files/subfolders so in many cases deleting the AIPrefs/Adobe Illustrator Prefs file is not enough: the easy solution is to move the whole folder rather than trying to figure out which file(s) may be corrupted; just deleting the folder without moving it first has proved fruitless in some cases.
    Therefore, the cure all consists of the following steps:
    1. Close Illustrator.
    2. Make a search including hidden files and folders and including subfolders for the folder holding the preference files; the name of the folder depends on the Illustrator version, and the position of the folder depends on the OS version. There is one folder for each version and for each user so it is important to find the relevant one.
    Up to version 10, the name of the folder is Adobe Illustrator [X],
    From version CS on, the name of the folder is Adobe Illustrator [X] Settings.
    [X] is the version number; up to 10, it is just a number, and above that the Creative Suite version number, CS, CS2, CS3, CS4, and so on, is used (the corresponding standalone versions still have simple numbers, CS is called 11, CS2 is called 12, CS3 is called 13, and CS4 is called 14, but the version numbers with CS are used in the folder name).
    3. Either:
    a) Create a subfolder and move all the contents into it; or
    b) Move the whole folder to a place where you can find it again, such as the Desktop.
    With both you may recover the contents of the folder by moving it back if the issue is not solved and get your preference settings back.
    a) requires creation of the subfolder, but it makes recovery easier, especially if you create a shortcut to the preference settings folder, and you can skip the search if/when corruption occurs again.
    You may delete the folder/contents subsequently.
    4. If you have Windows Vista, restart Windows. If not, continue to 5 without delay.
    5. Restart Illustrator, and see whether the issue is solved.
    If the issue is solved, and you wish to keep as many of your preference settings as possible, you may move the folder back and repeat 3) - 5) for groups/individual files/subfolders until you have found the corrupted one(s). You may also start by only moving the AIPrefs/Adobe Illustrator Prefs file.
    You may also see a terse version from ADOBE: Adobe Illustrator CS4 * About preferences.
    Scripts for cleaning out everything between uninstallation and reinstallation for versions CS4 and CS3:
    CS4 Clean Script, http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cs4clean.html

    I believe it is possible to get a refund, but there are some options still.

  • Keynote Crashes When I Move Objects With Arrow Keys

    Subject explains it all.
    This happens on both my 2.4GHZ Intel iMac and G4 powerbook.
    Machines are running OS 10.5.2 and Keynote 2.0.2
    I've bought both Leopard and Keynote and installed all the software from the CDs.
    Message was edited by: linus.spindrift

    The advice I would take from the last post would be used only to isolate the issue as it might relate to a system wide issue or a user specific issue. In other words, can we determine Keynote's behavior as being related to your home account and those files in your folder or the System (OS) level files? Read on please…
    If, after creating a new user account and logging into and Keynote continues to behave the same way, then potentially there is file outside your homefolder responsible for this. The file in question would, I'm sure you would agree, be a file related to Keynote's functionality and is accessed while Keynote is in use.
    When Keynote is attempting to follow your instructions it may be accessing a file that it relies on.
    A program which you can download to troubleshoot the issue is called appzapper, you can visit the developer's site here: http://appzapper.com/
    My suggestion would be to download this little app. Install it>drag and drop Keynote onto AppZapper. AppZapper will do its' best to find files relevant to the Keynote application and give you an opportunity to trash them.
    If you are curious as to the files AppZapper associates with Keynote, copy the name of those files and do a Google search to find out more about those files.
    In most cases the list of files, AppZapper associates are harmless if trashed, just make sure Keynote is not open while doing this or Keynote may sort of ask itself what is going on and behave oddly, a quit and relaunch should fix that if you forget to quit Keynote.
    Good target files that AppZapper might find are what are known as .plist files, plist as in PropertyList. .plist files typically store application preferences. So if you have ever gone to the preferences for Keynote in this case and modified the settings that .plist file would have stored those changes you set. If you move the .plist files to the trash, Keynote, upon a relaunch will say to itself, oh look, my .plist files are missing and simply regenerate those .plist files.
    The point here is if the .plist files were corrupt and Keynote was accessing those file(s) it would try to read the file and say to itself, hey I don't know how to read this and in this case, shut itself down.
    AppZapper may find more than just .plist files, investigate any files you feel hesitant to trash using your our old friend Google to learn about what it is you are going to trash.
    In most cases what AppZapper finds is safe enough to trash, just be sure to close Keynote before running this to keep Keynote from running into any unexpected surprises. It would be like yanking candy from a child's hand - that wouldn't be too nice.
    Finally if the issue persists, using DVD1 that came bundled with your mac, you should be able to install the bundled software only.
    Reinstalling Keynote or iLife should also be considered as a solution.
    An entire OS purchase or OS re-installation is definitely overkill and not an elegant solution, not to mention the downtime.
    The solution I am proposing hopefully makes common sense to you and gives you an overview in terms of understanding that there are files other than the application file related to any application's overall function.
    AppZapper is a small download and may help you locate that stubborn file causing you grief.
    That being said, creating a new user account on your mac and logging into it to isolate issues as being system wide or user specific is indeed the way to go to isolate issues in those terms.
    Keep us posted.

    Adobe Creative Suite CS5 is acting up. In Illustrator i was unable to move objects with my mouse and tried solving the problem in different ways - it still didnt work. So i opened up photoshop. I was unable to open a file in photoshop (new or old) and when i finally did manage to open something, I am unable to do many things.
    1) i cannot crop canvas
    2) i cannot resize canvas
    3) text dissapears after i type it
    4) brush strokes dissapear after i release mouse
    etc
    What should i do??
    Thank you!

    Nobody can help you without system info or otehr details. From your description this could be driver issues with a tablet if you use one or similar issues with a programmable custom mouse... Most definitely not an issue within the programs. Unplug your mouse and tablet, uninstall and reinstall the drivers, try another input device...

  • I can no longer move an object with arrow keys

    Pretty sure I have inadvertently disabled the option to select an object and move it with the arrow keys on my keyboard, but cannot figure out what I did - or how to enable that option again.
    Illustrator CC
    27" iMAC late 2013
    OS 10.9.5

    Found the answer in another thread. Somehow my keyboard increment was changed to a measurement so small (.00002") that I couldn't see the object move, nor did the X & Y coordinates change. I did not change this preference to .00002", but it is now fixed.

  • Can't move an object with arrow keys - CS3

    In Fash CS3, suddenly, in certain files, I can't move an object left using arrow keys - but I can move the same object right, or if I hold down Shift + left arrow, it works correctly
    Also - I can move the object down with arrow keys, but not up
    Workaround - move an object on a different layer, then return to the problem object and it moves correctly. But this doesn't last long, the problem resurfaces.
    Does anyone have a solution for this? (I've tried rebooting; tried copying all the layers into a new file - no help.)

    Now, working in the same file, I just clicked on a stroke and it changed the stroke from a smooth curve to angular lines.
    I suspect this file is corrupt. Any thoughts on how to salvage the weeks of work that have gone into it? Every version of this file has the same issues.
    Thanks for any help.

  • Artifacts when moving object with arrow keys.

    Hi all
    hope this is the right place to post this question.
    I want to to write simple arkanoid game in Flash (AC3). I've managed to write code that  moves my paddle with arrow keys. The code looks like this:
    function OnNewFrame(event:Event):void
        if (input.IsLeftHeld)
            if (paddle.x > 0)
                paddle.x -= 10;
        else
        if (input.IsRightHeld)
            if (paddle.x < stage.stageWidth - paddle.width)
                paddle.x += 10;
    It works but the result is ugly. The animation is not fluent, there are times when paddle stops for a moment . Also when speed of translation is high (here it is 10) you can see that paddle is flickering at the ends, it looks like single buffering problem. You can see both of those effects here:  http://www.flash-game-design.com/flash-tutorials/movOb.html , hovewer flickering is less visible due to small translation amount.
    How to fix this? How can i enable double buffering (or maybe it is enabled by default)?  Any help will be appreciated.
    P.S. sorry for bad english

    Thanks for samples, this is very kind ; p
    Hovewer you are doing everything almost exactly as I'am doing. Tou are using mySymbol.x++ which means your translation speed is 1. Also I'am aware that rising frame rate will result in smoother animations, but this is not the point. So once again, my flash applications suffer from two problems:
    1) Animations are not smooth. You can see this crealrly in here: http://www.kirupa.com/developer/actionscript/hittest.htm  , go back to the very bottom of the page, there is an animation window, look at the smallest circle. It looks like its blinking.
    2) Moving symbols with arrow keys with the method i've presnted in the first post (the same method that infeter uses ). Moved symbol is randomly stopping for the very (very very) short amount of time. You can easily spot this in infeter sample.
    Many sample applications i've seen suffer from those issues. and nobody seems to see the problem, so maybe I am delusional? ; p
    cheers and thank for help

  • Cannot move file with Content & Structure feature

    Hello everyone,
    I have a question regarding the Content & Structure feature of SharePoint 2013.
    I have people with "Design" permission level and I realized they don't have access to the action "Move" in the content
    manager.
    How come the button "Move" is disabled? What permissions are required to use this action?
    Thanks in advance for your help

    Hi,
    Please understand it is by design that the issue occurs when using the site content and structure to move items within the sites or to new location. You should have higher level permission.
    This is because the site content and structure uses the Content Migration (known as PRIME) export/import methods to move content. The PRIME API requires site collection admin privileges to be utilized which is why even site owner cannot move content.

  • Can't move objects with selection tools?

    As of last night, I am able to select objects in my documents but I am unable to move them using the selection tools.  I'm having to just scoot things around with the arrow keys.  I've already tried restoring my preferences and that hasn't helped.
    I'm running OS 10.6.8 and InDesign CS6 8.0.1
    Also, for what it's worth, any time I try to use the selection tools in Illustrator, Illustrator crashes but doesn't give me a crash report.  This started happening at the same time.
    Any ideas?

    Well, it was a long shot.
    You mentioned replacing the prefs. For ID that's a bit more complicated than some of the other Adobe apps, so I like to verify that you did the whole job. You'll find instructions for doing it manually or using a keybaord shortcut on launch here: Replace Your Preferences
    I'm concerned, though that Illustrator also seems to be acting up. Maybe you should replace the mouse driver.

  • Can't move objects with Selection Tool

    So, I just installed Illustrator CC, which I now have on a trial license.  About an hour ago, illustrator suddenly started refusing to move any objects while I'm in the Selection Tool.  I can move the objects only in Free Transform.  I use hot keys a lot, so it's really slowing me down.  I hit "V" to click on and then move an object, and then it won't move. I get the error sound, but no dialogue box pops up to explain what the error is.
    Since I'm getting ready to bite the bullet and start paying a hefty monthly fee for this program when my trial runs out, this is pretty aggravating.  Anyone have any ideas what might have cause this?

    Charlie,
    The following is a general list of things to try in case of serious strangenesses.
    You may try the following (you may have tried/done some of them already) and see whether it helps (the following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file; 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences):
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    See posts #3 to 7 in this thread about locating the folder in CC,
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1297845?tstart=0
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.

  • Cannot move project with Framemaker reference to another PC

    I have a projekt that comprises a Framemaker import by
    reference. This is organized in one directory with two
    subdirectories (one for the Framemaker sources and one for the RH
    project).
    When I move (copy) the complete master directory to a network
    drive and move it to another PC, i.e., copy it to the local
    harddisc, then I cannot use it any more. When I open the Robohelp
    project then all Framemaker references are lost (even though the
    spource documents are still there in the subdirectory next to the
    RH project). When I update the references using the corresponding
    right mouse click function, then RoboHelp crashes each time I try
    to update or force a re-import. The project cannot be repaired any
    more and remains unusable.
    On the other hand, if I move the project from the network
    drive back to the original PC but to another location, the
    references remain correct and the project works.
    Is this a common issue or rather specifiy to our working
    environment? Moving projects between working places should not be a
    problem.

    Let me try and explain what RoboHelp does when you add a
    FrameMaker document by reference. RoboHelp maintains a link to the
    FrameMaker source document and maintains a "Listener" which lets
    RoboHelp know when a change is made to FrameMaker source document.
    If you notice there is an icon in RoboHelp project manager which
    tells you that FrameMaker source document is changed. This change
    in status is an important visual feedback to authors to make sure
    they update the content before they publish the final output.
    Moving the RoboHelp project to another machine is breaking
    this live link and hence the issue you are seeing. Please delete
    the reference before you copy the project and then add the
    FrameMaker file again. I hope this helps.

  • Direct Selection or Hand Tool will not Move object with mouse! Frustrated!

    Since this recent update, I haven't been to use my mouse to move an image, text, etc. I'm running CC2014 on my Mac, not running Yosemite.
    I've tried already:
    Clicking some key sequence when opening Indesign so it will clear preferences - did not work.
    Restarted my computer - will work for a few minutes then stops
    Uninstalled Indesign and reinstalled - nothing
    Uninstalled full CC suite and ran the CC cleaner - deleted all instances of Adobe folder on my mac, deleted trash, restarted computer and reinstalled - This did nothing, same issue.
    I'm getting really frustrated as I don't really want to use my keyboards arrow keys to move elements. Any solutions to get rid of this annoying problem?
    Thank you in advance!

    I think that worked! You are my savior! Its been about 2 months dealing with this and it was such a simple, the weirdly unrelated, program that was causing the issue! Do you know why this happens?

  • Moving Movie Clips with Arrow keys

    How do i make it so when i click the left arrow key, it will
    change the movie clip to make it turn around?

    Yes, that's what the code I gave you is intended to do....
    you replace that code with whatever action you need to take to turn
    your movie around.
    I have no idea what your movieclip is doing, but I'm guessing
    by your response that if it was an arrow pointing left to right
    (just an example), you want it to be pointing right to left when
    the left arrow is pressed. If you want an immediate turn around,
    then the simplest way to do that is to have another frame
    containing the movieclip that it moves to where it faces the other
    direction--and to have it appear turned around, from the toolbar
    you select Modify -> Transform -> Flip Horizontal.
    So the movieclip would live inside another movieclip that has
    two frames with stop()'s for each frame. In the first frame you
    would have the subclip facing left to right, and in the second you
    would have it facing right to left. If we call that 2-framed
    movieclip "walker", the code I provided before would
    become...

  • Cannot move object unless it's selected (Illustrator CS4)

    Hi
    Well, my setup is Mac OS X 10.6.3 and Illustrator CS4 and I have this feature which I really dislike. I can't move any objects unless I select them first, and it sucks big time.
    Is there a secret setting I've missed? Or is this »new» feature simply one of Adobes »enhancements»?
    Thanks for any help

    Not something you would remember.
    BTW do you mind if others point users to your trouble shooting page?
    I wonder if this problem has also popped up on Windows as well?
    All the Illustrator hints were created as a common source for help, meant as a supplement to the FAQs which died with the fair  forums. It started with the hints about the preference file, both working with  it and getting rid of it, and the hidden Edges/Bounding Box issues; the whole folder came in later.
    I try to keep things updated. One ongoing challenge since the merge of the Windows and Mac forums has been to include specifics for both sides; I still make corrections when I stumble upon, or realize, inadequacies.
    And of course everyone is most welcome to point to them. It is a pleasure every time they serve their purpose.
    I have not seen this issue at all before, but some of the possibly offending applications are Windows (I think: the list is pure hearsay, as is everything about getting rid of corrupt preferences (Once I did succeed in deliberately corrupting the preference file by typing some obvious errors into it in a text editor, and then changed back to a viable one)).

  • Cannot move mail with attachments

    I was helping a friend prepare to eventually delete her hotmail account from Mail on her iPad. She did not want to lose any mails, so we were moving messages from her hotmail inbox to her gmail inbox. Moving the messages was uneventful until we came to messages with attachments. Any mails with attachments will not move. When trying to do so, we get an error message that simply says the mails cannot be moved...but gave no reason why (really helpful). They're simply stuck in the hotmail Inbox and cannot be moved out. Anybody have a clue what's happening here?
    In a worse case scenario I told her we could forward those messages to her new account and then just delete them from her hotmail account. By doing so we'll save the messages, but the messages won't appear in the new inbox according to when they were originally sent, but rather by when they were forwarded. Being able to move them would be the proper solution, but it simply won't work.

    Perhaps the mail server has a size limit that it allows. Might try a free web service and see if that will work for those attachments.
