Cannot, no matter what, factory reset my Airport Extreme

Hi Guys
I`m having a issue with my air port extreme and I was wondering if I can get any help and how to solve it. My air airport extreme is flashing the orange light rapidly and the airport utilities keep searching the airbase station. I've tried EVERYTHING! I tried holding the reset button down, plugging it is as I continue to hold it, keeping hold for a further 30 seconds and noting happened.
Can someone help me to solve this issue?

Unfortunately, a fast blinking amber light that will not change after a Factory Default Reset attempt indicates that you have a defective AirPort Extreme that will need to be replaced.
Try a Hard Reset as a last resort as follows:
Power up the AirPort Extreme for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button for 8-10 seconds and release
The AirPort Extreme should begin with a solid amber light for about 20-30 seconds, then turn to a slow blinking amber light about once a second.
If no luck after a few Hard Reset attempts, you will need to replace the AirPort Extreme.

Hi, I recently replaced my Airport Extreme (the older model shaped like a space ship, 802.11 b/g) with an Airport Express. I tired to move the spaceship to a different room in my house to extend the wireless network, but it was not being recognized by the Airport Utility (v5.6). So, I did a factory reset of the spaceship. Now I can see it in Airport Utility, however when I try to configure it, the Airport Utility prompts me for a password. It will not accept "public" as the password. Any ideas? Could keychains be the problem? This is a 2009 MBP running 10.8.3.

Out of morbid curiosity I went to my Mountain Lion Mac and downloaded AirPort Utility 5.5.3. I confirmed it will not install on Mountain Lion using OS X's usual package installer, but using the technique that follows I was able to install and run it on Mountain Lion. The only thing I could not verify is its ability to administer an older AEBS since I no longer have any to test.
The remainder of this post is for those who are willing to circumvent Apple's desire to use only current versions of AirPort Utility for reasons known only to them. Proceed only if you accept this as an unsupported workaround strictly for the purposes of administering an older Extreme on a newer Mac.
Prerequisites: A package extractor like Pacifist or unpkg will be required. Pacifist is shareware, unpkg is free.

Directions for Pacifist (I do not have screenshots for unpkg but the idea is similar):
After the .dmg file finishes downloading double-click it to mount the volume containing the metapackage. Control-click it and select Open With > Pacifist from the contextual menu:
You will get the following dialog:
The "unidentified developer" in this case is Apple. Click Open to open Pacifist.
Click the "reveal triangles" until you see AirPort Utility.app and select it.
The next steps are important.
Select Extract To... from the toolbar as in the above screenshot. In the dialog that follows, choose Desktop since otherwise you will overwrite your existing, newer version of AirPort Utility in your Utilities folder which should not be deleted. Restoring it may not be trivial.
Authenticate, allow Pacifist to extract the app, then you can quit Pacifist.
You will now have AirPort Utility version 5.5.3 on your Desktop. Before you attempt to copy it to your Utilities folder though, be sure to rename it accordingly:
You can then drag it to your Utilities folder. Authenticate, and you will have it alongside later versions where they can peacefully coexist:
Use the newest version AirPort Utility to administer current production AirPort Base Stations, and older versions only as necessary for older AirPort Base Stations that cannot be administered any other way.

My Time Capsule is connected to my FIOS router and to my Mac Mini. I am still able to connect to the Internet from the Mini via ethernet. It seems that the Time Capsule acts as a bridge for the ethernet connections between Internet to FIOS, FIOS to Time Capsule, and Time Capsule to Mac Mini.

Which model TC is this? The A1xxx number from the base please.
Try the setup in full isolation from the network.. so unplug the TC from the network.. and turn off wireless in the mini.. so you have mini--ethernet--lan port TC.. and nothing else.
Do the factory reset.
Now check if TC comes up in airport utility..
If it fails, turn on ipv6 local link.. if you are using 6.3 utility this could be necessary.
Still fails, try loading the v5 utility.. you will need to plug the computer back into the FIOS to get internet. Then depending on OS.. Lion according to your profile.. you can just down the utility.. ML takes more steps.

Do you have an iphone or ipad.. download the airport utility app and use those for the setup.. that can sometimes work better.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
1. Download 5.6 for Lion.

Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
2. Download and install unpkg.

Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 (now 6.2 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

This is a part of the larger MacBook Pro connectivity issue. There are several related threads dealing with the MBP's networking problems. If your unit is suffering from this type of difficulty, good luck ... (or a long ethernet cable)

What happened to my airport extreme that airport utility says used to be part of my network but no longer is found?

I have been working on regaining wireless printing from my MacBook and just discovered something new to me. I brought up Airport Utility and received a screen display showing my network. The diagram box for the Airport Extreme has a warning icon and clicking on the diagram box for the Airport Extreme brings up the message that my airport extreme cannot be found and that it USED TO BE part of my network. The only help given is to check the device and make sure it is plugged into power, within range and connected to the Internet. Its been a long time since I last set up the Airport Extreme, but it is powered up, in the same place and connected to my cable modem as before. I continue to have wireless connection to the Internet from my MacBook and iPhone. What I do not have is wireless connection from the the MacBook to my Brother Printer as I did until, for unknown reasons, it stopped working.
So far, I have checked all the help for the printer problem and wonder if my problem is in the Airport Extreme? The printer does find the Airport Extreme, but still does not print wirelessly, only by attaching it with USB cable to the MacBook.
Resetting the Airport Extreme will wipe out that setup, but should I do this anyway? Might it help the printer problem.

I see now that long questions are not going to be read and answered. Understandable. Since writing this I got help on one aspect of question and now have Airport Extreme visible through Airport Utility and it seems to work. However the wireless printer still does print. On the printer's screen, it recognizes my wireless network and connects. When I try to print from the MacBook, the usual printer icon comes up, but with Printer is Offline. Printer is Not Connected. So far, nothing in Apple or Brother help has given me answer to this problem. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Whenever I want to watch NetFlix or other streaming service on my PS3 I always have to reset my Airport Extreme. Same with the MacBook and iPod in the house. iPad and S4's connect flawlessly. Why is that? Makes me not want to watch a movie because have to do silly stuff like that.

It sounds like your Airport Extreme is not consistently working correctly for all your devices. I would start by performing a soft reset, then testing the issue again:
Resetting an AirPort base station FAQ
Soft reset
Open AirPort Utility in Applications > Utilities.
Select AirPort Utility > Check for Updates...
Install the most recent firmware and version of AirPort Utility available for your Mac.
Connect the base station to power.
Push and hold the reset button with a pen, pencil, or straightened paperclip for ten seconds.
Release the button. The base station will soft reset.
If that does not resolve the issue I would next perform a factory reset on the device, and test it again.
Factory default reset
Disconnect the base station from its power source.
Press and hold the reset button with a pen, pencil, or straightened paperclip, then plug the base station back in while continuing to hold the button for approximately 5 seconds until you see the three status lights glow.
Release the button. The base station will factory default reset.

What used to be called a "hard reset" on earlier models is now called a "factory default reset" on 802.11ac models, so things can get confusing. At least Apples seems to have updated the FAQ recently to reflect the changes with the new models.....if you dig deep enough.

Reset button is broken. Which pins do I short to reset my Airport Extreme to factory defaults?

I'm working on a 4th Generation Airport Extreme A1354. I do not know the password and I was not able to perform the software, hardware, or factory default reset procedures. (I never got the fast blinking amber light.)
I suspected a broken reset switch and took the gray cover off to find the reset button was indeed broken. Upon slight maneuvering, the button fell off the board.
I think I can perform a factory default reset by jumpering where the reset switch was. Which pins do I short to perform the factory default procedure without the reset button working?

I don't often work on extreme.. mostly Time Capsule.. but the switch is surface mount.. no pins go through the board.. you will need to lift the board right out of the frame, (it all comes out in one piece and is fairly easy to do).. and you will need to short the two pins right at the switch .. but hopefully with it right out the switch itself will become accessible.

Why Can't I Reset my AirPort Extreme?

Let me just say first: I've learned my mistake for forgetting about the rule: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Anyways, today I wanted to inprove wifi speeds on my 5th gen AirPort Extreme Base Station. I tried enabling Extend a Wireless Network, 5 Ghz connection, static IP, and I got this:

The default settngs for the AirPort Extreme provide maximum available speeds, so there is rarely any need to change the settings.
Try a Factory Default Reset to see if you can unlock the AirPort Extreme.
Pull the power cord from the back of the AirPort Extreme
Wait a few minutes
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding for an additional 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power cord back in to the AirPort Extreme
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for the AirPort Extremet to restart back to a slow, blinking amber light
If the reset is successful, you will now be able to reconfigure the AirPort Extreme again.

That's odd. I would continue to try a "hard reset" to restore its normal function.
Occasionally multiple attempts are necessary. Read this to make sure you're performing the reset correctly.
Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ
Here is the procedure from that FAQ:
Unplug the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule from power.
Press and hold the reset button with a pen or pencil, then plug the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule back in while continuing to hold the button until you see the light (LED) flash rapidly. This should happen after a few seconds.
Release the button. This will factory default reset the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule.
If you hold the reset button in only momentarily, or release it inadvertently, that prevents any further attempts at a "hard reset" for a period of time. However, holding the reset button in while connecting it to power as described above overrides this function. I would repeat that action until you get somewhere. There is no other technique.
If you are not successful, you can take it to an Apple Store for a potential diagnosis, but they are going to do exactly the same thing.

Factory default Internal Airport Extreme

Is there a factory reset for an internal airport extreme card on a mac mini? I am not able to set up a wireless linksys router. It was working last week by the way, then I bought and installed the software drivers for a linksys wireless n but it didn't work as the airport is for g only. So i am trying to go back to my wrt54g I was using last week but the airport card keeps saying it failed?

Also, what would be the absolute minimum settings for the wireless part of the linksys router, ie security settings, network mode, security mode, channel, etc. Here are the settings I have right now
1. Basic wireless settings, Network Mode (mixed), Network name (linksys), Channel(6), SSID (enabled)
2. Wireless Security settings, Security mode (WPA Personal), Algorithms (TKIP), Shared Key (six letters and 2 numbers), Key Renewal (3600 seconds),
3. Wireless MAC Filter (disabled)
4. Advanced wireless settings, I haven't touched any of them. Authentication type is (Auto). Secure easy setup (enabled)
