Cannot open an Excel spreadsheet

Hi All, I've been testing Numbers but was mostly disappointed at step 1. I simply wanted to open an existing Excel spreadsheet and I get the error;
"The document can’t be imported because it’s too large."
The spreadsheet is 55kb and contains 5 tabs(!!??) Ive tried deleting one tab at a time and re-opening in Numbers but I still get the same message.
I therefore decided to copy and paste each sheet into a Numbers work sheet. That worked fine except for the fact that the formulas are not copied over. As a final attempt I tried to save my spreadsheet in a different format from Excel but found that Numbers can only open a limited number of file types, i.e. no Lotus support. In desperation I decided to export the spreadsheet in CSV format from Excel but upon trying to open it in Numbers I get the same message as before;
"The document can’t be imported because it’s too large."
It looks like i'll be sticking with Excel for the foreseeable future. To me numbers looks like a beta product lacking in much functionality as many of you have already described. One could question if this should be a retail product at this stage.
I wish you all the best of luck with your Numbers experience.
Jason

I have yet to see that message, and I've asked it to open some 2MB+ multi-thousand-cell Excel sheets. Is your spreadsheet sharable? If so, I'd love to take a look at it -- I'm working on our review of Numbers now, and such things would be useful to see if I can figure out why it's breaking.
If you can share, please let me know via email; my work email address is my first initial and last name at the domain shown below.
Thanks!

  • Open the excel spreadsheet in Excel.

    Hi,
I am outputing data as an excel spreadsheet via jsp, but there are no toolbars etc available (for sorting, etc) when displayed within the browser.
Is it possible to always open the excel spreadsheet in the Excel-application (even if the user/client have "Browse in same window" for the file type)?
    Thank you

    May be this could help:-
The points given below gives idea about how to display the report or
static data for which data is retrieved in the servlet and printed
    through jsp.
    1. The conversion of report into excel is done by changing the
    setContentType of response
in the servlet. The mimeType should be added in mimeTypes of application
server corresponding to the string given in setContentType. The setHeader
    is for default file
    name for excel
    Example:
    response.setContentType("application/vnd.ms-excel");
    response.setHeader("Content-disposition","attachment;filename=file.xls")
    Setting Mime type in server(Weblogic):
    weblogic.httpd.mimeType. application/vnd.ms-excel =xls
    2. In IE the excel is directly downloaded and the user explicitly
saves in the local system. In Netscape the user is given the option to
open the file or save it to the local system
    3. Note:
    1) It is better if the whole information of the report in a single
    table.
    2) If the application requires both html and excel format of the same
report to be displayed on certain conditions, it is better to have two
different jsps one for html and other for Excel since the formatting is
    different

  • Numbers cannot open an excel file (in my ipad).

Numbers cannot open an excel file (in my ipad) sent from an email. I get this message: "the document can't be opened because it contains cells outside the boundaries of Numbers"...what this means?

If you have Numbers for the iPad, that will be one of the options to open in (besides, or from, Quick Look) if you don't have one of the PDF  / printing apps. Numbers handles Excel files quite nicely on the iPad, in my experience--one more reason to have it.
One reason I like the Save2PDF app is that it gives me lots of options on the iPad for how I want to save or process email attachments.

  • Cannot Edit Embedded Excel SpreadSheets

There is a user at our company who cannot open Excel 2010 spreadsheets that have been embedded into Word 2010 documents. Sometimes the embedded Excel Spreadsheet will open with a Picture Tools menu ribbon. Other times he gets an error
message that Excel is not installed on his computer. When other users open the same embedded objects on their computers they do not have any problems. I have replaced his computer but the problem continues with the new computer. I have also logged onto his
computer with a different user account and I do not have a problem opening the embedded Excel spreadsheets. The user has Administrator rights on his own computer. We all have Windows 7 Enterprise and Office 2010 Professional Plus installed on our computers.
Thanks in advance for any assistance with this issue.

    Hi,
    Try this:
    ============
    1.
    Go to Excel.
    2.
    Click File > Options >
Advanced, then in the “General” section, remove the tick from “Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)“.
For the general troubleshooting, you may refer to:

  • Want to open an Excel Spreadsheet from a link.

I am working with financial website and it has a link to a Excel Spreadsheet already design to performa complex calculation.  Spreadsheet is in Excel.  Clicking on the link does not open it and I cannot figure how to get it to open in Numbers - any ideas.

    Hi Laura,
This note, from a cell in the Excel spreadsheet, likely explains the difficulty:
If you are using on older version of Excel, you may need to install an “Add-In.” On the Tools menu at the top of your screen, click Add-Ins. Select the Analysis ToolPak box, and then click OK. If necessary, follow the instructions in the setup program.
The add-ons in Excel's Analysis Toolpak are, to the best of my knowledge, not supported in Numbers.

  • Cannot open an Excel 2010 workbook by using Internet Explorer 8.0 in sharepoint 2010

When am trying to open a Microsoft Office Excel 2010  workbook from a Web site by browsing to the location with Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.0, you cannot open the file. Instead, you receive the following messages:
Some files can harm your computer. If the file information below looks suspicious, or you do not fully trust the source, do not open this file.
Would you like to open the file or save it to your computer?
If you click Open, you receive the following error message:
    Could not open 'http[s]://<var>Server_name</var>/<var>File_path</var>/<var>File_name</var>.xls'.
After you click OK, you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Excel cannot access the file 'http[s]://<var>Server_name</var>/<var>File_path</var>/<var>File_name</var>.xls' There are several possible reasons:
The file name or path name does not exist.
The file you're trying to open is being used by another program. Close the document in the other program, and try again.
The name of the workbook you're trying to save is the same as the name of another document that is read-only. Try saving the workbook with a different name.

    Hi Ramesh,
Please install the hotfix package and test the issue again:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2817576/en-us
In addition, try uncheck the option “confirm open after download” per:

    Ok,

When I get to the box where the choice of skins are, right
    above it, the choices are:
    Section 508 Compliant Output
    W3C Compliant Topics
I double checked RoboHelps Help...and it says Robohelp for
    Word 6, Build 99.
    Colum...
Here's what I did (I 'thought', I'd start off simple, lol)...
    1. Start Robo.
    2. Select New Project.
    3. The left panel contains all of the folders (I think its
    called Explorer).
The right panel is the default Helpfile word document that
    contains the 'welcome' message.
    4. I added my spreadsheet to the Baggage folder.
    5. Back at the word document, I just added a simple word
    'excel'.
    6. Then I highlighted 'excel', Insert->Hyperlink...and
pointed it to my excel spreadsheet.
    7. Saved it.
    8. Generated it.
Everything opens up fine in IE. Excel is highlighted blue and
    underlined. But its not clickable.

  • Won't Open the Excel Spreadsheet

I have no problem running the VI; however, when I build the application and run the exe, the Excel spreadsheet does not load. Any ideas?

    Hi.
I think we need some more info. Are you getting an error? What kind?
Check the path. I have noticed that a compiled EXE adds one "level" to all paths inside the EXE. So check to make sure the path is correct. See here for more info:

  • Problem with opening an excel spreadsheet

    Hello,
I need to open an excel sheet when the user clicks on a link.
When I run the code I get SAVE/ DOWNLOAD dialog box.
Is it possible to get around the SAVE/DOWNLOAD dialog and open the excel sheet directly.
In other words, is it possible to download the excel sheet to a temp directory and open it from there.
    Please help,
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
I am able to open the excel sheet successfully from the web application but what is happening is that when it opens it sets the title of the excel sheet as the URL from where it was downloaded.
The problem with this is that the macros within the excel sheet are not working.
If i save the excel sheet and give it a name, the macros are working.
So, obviously it is something to do with the title.
Is it possible for me to pass the filename along with the code to open the excel sheet.
Thanks for your help so far.

  • Cannot open in Excel 2010 in Browser (32bit IE9) Windows 7

I have a user that has the following set-up:
    Windows 7 (64-bit)
    IE9 (64 bit)
    Office 2010
When she tries to open Excel in the browser she gets this error:
"sharepoint 2010 to open this workbook, your computer must have a version of Microsoft Excel installed and your web browser must support opening files directly from excel in the browser."
According to our help desk, because of the version of Windows the user has, 32-bit IE cannot be installed ... it automatically installs 64 bit. I have already reviewed the other issues with the same question but since the system will not allow the 32 bit
IE to be installed, that doesn't help in this instance. Thanks!

    Hi All,
bit or the 64 bit on an x64 Windows OS. The 32-bit version of Office 2010 is the recommended option for most people, because it prevents potential compatibility issues with other 32-bit applications, specifically third-party add-ins that are available only
    for 32-bit operating systems.
Office 2010 provides support for the 32-bit version of Office 2010 programs running on 64-bit operating systems by using WOW64, a compatibility environment provided by the operating system that allows a 32-bit application to run on a Windows 64-bit operating
system. Using the 32-bit version of Office 2010 allows people to continue to use existing third-party add-ins for Office that are 32-bit.
What is in the 32-bit version of Office but is not included in the 64-bit version of Office?
    ActiveX controls library, ComCtl
This library contains ActiveX controls that are used to build solutions. It is most commonly used in the following Microsoft Office programs: Access, Excel, and Word.
    SharePoint List control
The list view in SharePoint Technology is not available to people using the 64-bit version of Office.
You should install the 64-bit edition of Office 2010 if you have spreadsheets or Visio diagrams larger than 2GB
