Cannot Open Aperture!! HELP

Getting a message that "the database is locked and cannot be used at this time". My library is on a LaCie external drive and I know the files are there!

Hello, promoguy
Quote: "When I restarted my computer I had to change the preferences for library location, but now when I open the program it says the database is locked."
Whenever you change the location of the Aperture Library you will have to restart Aperture. EDIT: If you changed the location manually by drag and dropping then open Aperture's Preferences Command , (Command comma) and reset it by browsing to the new location and then restart Aperture.
Quote: "And yes it is a large library."
How big is big? Aperture 1.0.1 will take a performance hit if the Library is more than 10,000 photographs.
Repair Disk Permissions in Safe Boot mode and try again.
Quote: "I know the files are on the LaCie drive..."
I do not know and I am not saying this is the problem but LaCie drives have a very high failure rate. I teach businesses that repair and recop data from macs and hard drives and they see an inordinate amount of LaCie drives that fail — higher than any other external drives.

Cannot open aperture v3 after upgrading to  OS 10.6.8.  Bought the upgrade online so cannot reload the software.  Can you help?

How did you buy it online? Did you buy a registration number from the Apple Store?
Then you can download the Trial version from this link:
        Aperture 3.1 Trial
and run Software Update immediately after installing.
Go to the Applications folder and delete Aperture.
    Download the Aperture 3.1 Trial.
Open the Aperture Trial disc image.
    Double-click the "Aperture Trial.mpkg" file.
Follow the onscreen instructions to install Aperture.
After the installation completes, choose Software Update from the Apple () menu.
Cannot open aperture v3 after upgrading to  OS 10.6.8.
But what exactly is the error you get, when you try to launch Aperture? Maybe you need to do more than updating.

Pages died today. Just downloaded the latest update 2 days ago. Last night shutting down my very new MacBook Pro Retina, Pages stopped shut down. Today Pages will not open, all my Pages docs cannot open. Help please! Anybody have a fix?

You probably have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 in your Applications folder, will open Pages '09 files but will alter/damage them. It can not open Pages '08 files.
Pages '08/'09 in your Applications/iWork folder which can not open Pages 5 files.
When you were shutting down you probably had an unsaved document open.
You probably are opening the wrong versions of Pages to open the wrong document format.
Pages 5 has had over 90+ features removed.
Most users are going back to Pages 09 whilst Apple sorts this out.

  • Cannot open Aperture - I have tried all you have suggested?

    Hi
For some time, I have had some Aperture problems. It kept saying that there was no more room on my start disc for a while, and when I cleared some space, it seemed to help.....but not for long. Now I cannot even open Aperture, but I just receive this message: there was an error opening the database for the library..(and then the name of my library). I have looked at all the similar advice, and I even tried to repair aperture, but it won't do that either. I have also checked my disc, but it doesn't report any problems. PLEASE HELP!
    Sincerely, Katrine

YES, it worked to create a new library -
That is very good news. It shows that Aperture is still working.
Try, if you can repair the old library by importing it into the new library. But that will require additional disk space. How large is your current library? If it is larger than 40Gb your free disk space will not sufficce to merge libraries.  It would be best to use an external drive (formatted MacOS X Extended) for the new library.
To import the old library into a new library use the command "File > Import > Library".
If merging does not work, we will have to reconstruct a new library from bits of pieces of the old one, so keep your fingers crossed.

  • Cannot open aperture library in iPhoto

I recently opened an old iPhoto library in Aperture. This changed the file extension, and presumably the file structure. Libraries are supposed to be interchangeable between the two apps, but now I get the following message when I try to open the libary in iPhoto: "To open this Aperture library in iPhoto, it first needs to be upgraded with Aperture 3.3 or later. Quit iPhoto and then open your library in Aperture to upgrade it." I'm running Aperture 3.4.5 and iPhoto 9.4.3. I've repaired permissions and rebuilt the database (and whatever the third option was when Aperture is launched with Command-Option). Any suggestions?

    Stephen,
the problem is probably an inconsistent DateModelVersion.plist file in the Aperture Library.
If the library cannot be repaired, try to restore this file from your backup, from a time when the library could be opened in iPhoto. If you have Code installed, you can try to edit the file manually.

  • What does the message "You have exceeded your license" mean? I cannot open aperture on my computer

I installed aperture on my lap top. I now tried to install it on my Mac Pro. I got a message saying I have exceeded my license, but it let me install anyway. Now there is a grey circle with a line thru the app icon and I cannot open. Can someone help me?

    We have the boxed version
The licence for the boxed version allows two installations, one on a Desktop Mac and one on a portable Mac.
But when you install the boxed retail version on a Mavericks system and update it to Aperture 3.5.1, your licence for the retail version will be converted to a licence from the App Store and tied to your Apple ID. After that, your retail version registration key is no longer valid.
You have to download Aperture from the App Store and use the AppleID, you used when you updated Aperture to 3.5.1.
Do you have updated Aperture to 3.5.1 on one of your Macs?  Then delete the crossed-our Aperture on your MacPro and launch the AppStore. Sign in with the same AppleID you used on your laptop. Open the "Purchased" tab and look for Aperture. Is it there and is the "Install" button available?

  • Cannot open aperture

When I try to open aperture I get the following message:
There was an error opening the database for the library “~/Library/Calendars/Attachments/65F8E300-E970-4292-A9A1-1A50C2B68BAA/Aperture 3 Library.aplibrary”.
I have deleted and reinstalled the app.  I have also updated to the current version.  Just before this happened I was trying to open an older version to find some photos.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Karen

How come your Aperture Library is stored as a Calendar attchment?
Where do you usually store your Library? It looks like Aperture were searching the Aperture Library in a place were you should store documents relating to calendar appointments.
Try to open Aperture in a way, so that you can point Aperture to the correct Library. By default your Library would reside inside your Pictures Folder.
Hold down the option-key while you click the Aperture icon in the Dock or the Application folder. This will bring up the "Choose Library" dialogue.
    Select your regular Aperture Library.
    Now Aperture should launch correctly.
If this should not be the case, try the
    Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805
Start with deleting the Preference file.
    Good luck

Since upgrading to Yosemite 10.10.3 (including Photos) Aperture 3.5.1 will no longer open.  I get the message "In order to open Aperture.app, you need to update to the latest version."  However, when I search the Mac App Store I get a message saying the item I searched for is not available in the US App Store.  Is there a way to continue to use Aperture?

  • Cannot open Access Help

I have a Thinkpad T500 with WINDOWS 7. In spite of using recovery discs (advice Lenovo), I am not able to open the so-called on-line handbook via the link ACCESS HELP (you come there via HELP AND SUPPORT). I see the message popping up: "cannot open the file masteraibl.hcm::/welcome.htm".  I did hardly use or transport this labtop and no other programmes are on the labtop excepted the Norton security. The other links you see when clicking on HELP AND SUPPORT all work. I estimate that it is an error in the software in the connection between WINDOWS 7 and the LENOVO ACCESS HELP. Any help to overcome this weird problem is welcome.

Anything you put inside your home folder, except for ~/Public and ~/Sites, is inaccessible to any other user on your Mac.
If the app you run requires items to be placed in ~/Library, you'll need to make duplicate copies of those and put them in the ~/Library of your other user account.
The easiest way to do this is to temporarily move the items from ~/Library to ~/Public. Then log into your other account, and copy them from the other user's public folder to ~/Library. Then log back into the other account and return the items to ~/Library.
Keep in mind that changes made to these items in one account won't be made automatically in the other account. You'll have to make any changes twice.
A better option, if the app supports it, might be to keep the items in /Library at the root level of your boot drive instead. All users can read files in there by default.

  • I cannot open the Help tab in Numbers

I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion.
Unfortunately when I try to open the Help tab within Numbers nothing opens.
Can anyone suggest a solution to this?

Until that issue is solved, you should be able to access Numbers Help at the URL below:
    https://help.apple.com/numbershelpr2/English/NumbersHelp.html
I would second Wayne's suggestion to download the numbers '09 User Guide, though. I've found the guide (and the iWork Formulas and Functions User Guide) to be a better source of help than the help files.

    Hi Steven,
Navigate to ~/Library/Caches ( "~" = your "Home") and delete this folder:
    com.apple.helpui folder.
Try Help. Did that solve the problem? If not:
Navigate to ~/Library/Preferences and delete the following files:
    com.apple.help.plist
    com.apple.helpui.plist
    com.apple.helpviewer.plist
Log out and back in or restart.
    Let us know.

  • Cannot open CS3 Help Files

    Windows XP Pro; SP3; CS3
Following hard drive failure I downloaded CS3 to new hard drive. Individual applications downloaded and opened OK however I cannot access help file for any of the CS3 applications. When I open Indesign or Photoshop Help from the Help  drop down menu, the Adobe Help Viewer 1.1 appears. When I fill in the Browse and Search boxes on the Viewer screen and hit enter, a list of help topics appears. When I click on any one of those topics, the Viewer screen remains empty with the exception of the cursor arrow and hourglass. How can I access help files for CS3?

Sounds like the uninstall using the cleanup tool was not complete (and I feel like we're leading you deeper into the abyss, but I don't know what else to tell you). I'd see if you can "repair" from the installer disk, or run the cleanup again.
As I said before, the CS3 installer was the worst in Adobe history and would fail for the slightest provocation. It's VERY important that nothing that could conflict is running while you install, and you should be logged into the Administrator Accont for best results. One of the things that I forgot to mention earlier as a known problem is flash player, and you should uninstall that. There was a special tool for one of the versions that was likely to be on systems running CS3, but I'm on the raod and this machine is not loaded with a lot of my reference materials, so I don't have that link. It will be mentioned in earlier threads about CS3 installation problems from several years ago if you search.
As for the the latest error message you see, if my memory is correct, that one is fixed with this: Flexnet Patch. The description would lead you to believe it works only on Vista, but it does run on XP (and I needed to use it myself at one point).

  • Cannot open Aperture library

I have multiple Aperture 3 libraries. I have the most current version of Aperture (3.5.1) and OS10.9.1. I can open all my libraries except one - the one I need for Christmas! I have tried all threee repair steps multiple times. Sometimes it gets as far a showing me albums, but that is as far as it gets before it locks up. I also moved it from a remote HD to my main iMac HD with still no luck. What other steps can I use?

    Léonie,
Wow, I so appreciate your input!
    To summarize:
You tried all three First Aid Tools - repair database, repair permissions, rebuild, right?
You can open other Aperture libraries, right?
Your Aperture library is on your system drive?
Deferring the generation of previews did not help
    All true
Does your christmas library contain other media types than the other libraries that work well? Videos, raw files?
Most images are RAW files and there is also some video
Do you have enough free disk space?
    Yes, plenty
It worked for a couple hours this moring and when it woke up, it was locked up again...
What are you trying to do? Printing a photo book? Rendering a slideshow?
Organizing images into a photo book, printing, all of the above.
So Aperture does not immediately hang? Try to start Aperture's Activity window right after startup: Window > Show Activity.  Watch it, so you can tell what Aperture is doing, when the "Hang" starts.
Also watch the Console, so you can see what immediately befor the hang will happen, perhaps what it causing it.
I am not able to really start anything in that library immedniatly after start-up, but will try again to watch.
When did this hang start? After you imported new images, or after you installed or upgraded software?
Software is updated automatically now. It started about 3 weeks ago.
