Cannot open Aperture library

I have multiple Aperture 3 libraries. I have the most current version of Aperture (3.5.1) and OS10.9.1. I can open all my libraries except one - the one I need for Christmas! I have tried all threee repair steps multiple times. Sometimes it gets as far a showing me albums, but that is as far as it gets before it locks up. I also moved it from a remote HD to my main iMac HD with still no luck. What other steps can I use?

Léonie,
Wow, I so appreciate your input!
To summarize:
You tried all three First Aid Tools - repair database, repair permissions, rebuild, right?
You can open other Aperture libraries, right?
Your Aperture library is on your system drive?
Deferring the generation of previews did not help
All true
Does your christmas library contain other media types than the other libraries that work well? Videos, raw files?
Most images are RAW files and there is also some video
Do you have enough free disk space?
Yes, plenty
It worked for a couple hours this moring and when it woke up, it was locked up again...
What are you trying to do? Printing a photo book? Rendering a slideshow?
Organizing images into a photo book, printing, all of the above.
So Aperture does not immediately hang? Try to start Aperture's Activity window right after startup: Window > Show Activity.  Watch it, so you can tell what Aperture is doing, when the "Hang" starts.
Also watch the Console, so you can see what immediately befor the hang will happen, perhaps what it causing it.
I am not able to really start anything in that library immedniatly after start-up, but will try again to watch.
When did this hang start? After you imported new images, or after you installed or upgraded software?
Software is updated automatically now. It started about 3 weeks ago.

  • Cannot open aperture library in iPhoto

I recently opened an old iPhoto library in Aperture. This changed the file extension, and presumably the file structure. Libraries are supposed to be interchangeable between the two apps, but now I get the following message when I try to open the libary in iPhoto: "To open this Aperture library in iPhoto, it first needs to be upgraded with Aperture 3.3 or later. Quit iPhoto and then open your library in Aperture to upgrade it." I'm running Aperture 3.4.5 and iPhoto 9.4.3. I've repaired permissions and rebuilt the database (and whatever the third option was when Aperture is launched with Command-Option). Any suggestions?

    Stephen,
the problem is probably an inconsistent DateModelVersion.plist file in the Aperture Library.
If the library cannot be repaired, try to restore this file from your backup, from a time when the library could be opened in iPhoto. If you have Code installed, you can try to edit the file manually.

I just downloaded Ilife 9 and now my Iphoto doesn't open. The error message says: You cannot open your library using this version. Quit and use the older version. What can I do?

iLife '09 is not available as a download - it is only available as a purchase
iLife '11 is available as a DVD purchase and the compoments of it are available from the App Store (iPhoto '11 (version 9.1.5), etc)
Exactly what did you do? And exactly what does the error message say?
On the surface it appears that you are attemptying to open a new library with an older version (iPhoto '09 can not open an iPhoto '11 library for example)

  • Fatal error C1083: Cannot open type library file: '..\..\bin\TsAdpApi.tlb': No such file or directory

    Hi Folks:
I am doing one Dll file for TestStand , and got an error : d:\teststand3.5\teststand 3.5\examples\modaldialogs\mfc\tsapivc.h(18) : fatal error C1083: Cannot open type library file: '..\..\bin\TsAdpApi.tlb': No such file or directory
Could anyone help me out of that ??
    Thanks in advance !

This type library for the adapter API is embedded in the teapi.dll. If you are using Visual Studio.NET, there is an attribute called tlbid that you can use with the #import directive in order to import that embedded library (see the MSDN documentation for more details). For example:
    #import tlbid(2)
In VC++ 6.0, there is no way to import embedded type libraries. Therefore, you must use the attached type library file (.tlb) with the #import directive. For example:
    #import "TsAdpApi.tlb"

  • Cannot open Photo.library of other Mac User.

Running Yosemite, and Photos 1.0 (Dutch version). As advised elsewhere, in order to allow Photo library being used by 2 users of same MAC, I created a 3rd 'shared data' user, to put shared Photo data. So with 1 of the users on MAC, I imported (old) iPhoto library in Photos, went fine, and copied the Photo.library file on the 'shared data' folder under folder Pictures. I created proper authorizations for both users to access this library. Now from the user by which I created this net Photo.library, I can open this library OK, but from the other user (same authorizations) I cannot open the library, error is 'Photo cannot restore permission'. I run the checkdisk program, run the program to restore permissions, but did not help. When I try to open this library on the 'shared data' user's folder from Finder, error says it cannot import pictures from the library. Thanks for advice.

2 disks, and buy a software to backup one disk to the seagate raid 1 ... sounds complicated to me, TimeMachine can't backup network disks. Fact is though that I can access the foto library from 1 other user on the MAC, so it isn't so that accessing other user's  library doesn't work. But it only works for 1 user apparently. Clearly not very well thought through by Apple.

Cannot open aperture v3 after upgrading to  OS 10.6.8.  Bought the upgrade online so cannot reload the software.  Can you help?

How did you buy it online? Did you buy a registration number from the Apple Store?
Then you can download the Trial version from this link:
        Aperture 3.1 Trial
and run Software Update immediately after installing.
Go to the Applications folder and delete Aperture.
    Download the Aperture 3.1 Trial.
Open the Aperture Trial disc image.
    Double-click the "Aperture Trial.mpkg" file.
Follow the onscreen instructions to install Aperture.
After the installation completes, choose Software Update from the Apple () menu.
Cannot open aperture v3 after upgrading to  OS 10.6.8.
But what exactly is the error you get, when you try to launch Aperture? Maybe you need to do more than updating.

  • Cannot open my library. iPhoto says I opened it before with a newer version which is not true.

Cannot open my library. iPhoto says I opened it before with a newer version which is not true. I am using Snow Leopard and iPhoto 7.1.5 which seems to be the latest update. How can I reach my photos? I don't particually care for iPhoto anymore since I am using Lightroom now, but I would very much like to reach my picture files, HELP

Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Palm TX crashing - line 942 Cannot Open Calendar library

For the last few weeks my Palm TX is crashing almost every other day.  I can not find and easily recreate the problem, but when system crashes is usually when I try to access Calendar via hard button.  Since I am also running "Reset Doctor" this is the message that is being recorded:
"DatebookUI.c, Line: 942, Cannot Open Calendar library"
Appreciate any feedback and maybe some points how to correct this problem.
    Andrew

As with most problems that occur on a Palm PDA, it is either software or hardware related and we have to determine which one.
Best method is to first make a complete backup of your unit to your SD card using the free "NVBackup" (available from http://www.freewarepalm.com) After the backup is complete, Hard Reset the unit, then test to see if full functionality returns.
    To perform a Hard Reset:
While pressing and holding the Power button down, tap and release the Reset button in back and continue to hold the Power button down. When the grey Palm logo appears, you can release the Power button.
You should now see the warning page in about 5 languages. Press the UP direction on the 5-way pad to complete the task. Your Palm will reset itself several times as it re-installs the original programs and erases all your previous data.
DO NOT HOTSYNC YET! Test the unit before reinstalling any software. If the unit works correctly, your problem is being caused by a "drug interaction" of software - maybe one rogue program, or a combination of several. You'll have to reinstall the third-party programs one or a few at a time to find the problem one. To avoid re-installing a software issue, rename your /Backup directory in your Palm folder (on a PC it's found here: C/Program Files/Palm(One)/"your HotSync ID name truncated"/Backup) to something like "/BackupOLD". Now perform the HotSync, choose your HotSync name you've been using, and all your PIM data will return, but not the third-party programs. Test for functionality again. If all is good, start installing the old programs from your /BackupOLD directory one (or a few if brave) at a time.
If the unit does not work after a Hard Reset is performed correctly, then it may be Hardware-related. (If it's a connection problem via either BlueTooth or Wifi, be sure nothing has changed on the unit you're trying to connect to!)
    Hope this has helped,

  • Cannot open iPhoto Library (9.6) in Aperture (3.6)

    Hi,
I've done some searching around and can't find a solution to this problem:
When trying to open my iPhoto Library in Aperture, I continually get the message
"To open this iPhoto library in Aperture, it first needs to be upgraded.  Verify that you have iPhoto 9.4 or later. Then open the library in iPhoto to upgrade it."
    I am running
    iMac Late 2013
    Yosemite 10.10
    iPhoto 9.6
    Aperture 3.6
All updates run on the system
I have another iPhoto Library that opens fine in Aperture.
I have tried opening the library using a separate user account with no luck
    Any help greatly appreciated!

Does the iPhoto Library open in iPhoto 9.6?
If yes, then open it in iPhoto and use the menu entry "File > Open Library in Aperture".
If that does not work, repair your iPhoto Library in iPhoto to fix any wrong database entry:
Try to repair the iPhoto library with the First Aid tools:
Try to launch into the First Aid Tools  by holding down the key combination option-command ⌥⌘ and clicking the iPhoto icon to launch iPhoto.
Keep the two buttons firmly held down, until you are seeing the First Aid panel.
    Then select "Repair database".
If that does not fix it, backup your iPhoto Library and try the other First Aid options as well.
Where is this iPhoto Library stored? Is it in the default location, the Pictures folder or on an external drive?

  • Cannot repair Aperture Library, "which library do you want to use"

When I open Aperture and hold down the option key I keep getting prompted for "which library do you want to use"
and it lists my current library and two backup with a , .BAK extension on two different disks.
So I cannot get to the repair options, I only get  "which library do you want to use".
How can I get to the repair options?
    much appreciated.

You need to press the key combination options-command to launch into the Library First Aid Tools:
Hold down the options key ⌥ and the command key  ⌘ at the same time, while launching Aperture. And keep the keys held down firmly, until you are seeing the Library First Aid panel. Then select "Repair Library" from the panel.
If you only hold  down the options key  ⌥, you will launch into the Library chooser panel to switch between libraries.
What is the reason, that you need to repair the Aperture library?

  • ITunes cannot find Aperture library

    Hi all,
Im trying to sync pics to my iphone 5.  I've used Aperture for 5+ years without a problem until now.  I got a new imac and since then i am unable to sync pics.  See error messages below.  I dont see any option in Aperture to share as the error msg states.
I've tried all the aperture db correction steps as well as creating a new library.  No luck.  Any ideas are appreciated
    thx
    Brett

From itunes, when checking off "sync photos from...aperture" msg is:
Your aperture library could not be found.  Open the preferences window in aperture and enable the preference to share previews with other applications.
When i click "ok" to the above msg, get the following:
itunes cannot sync photos to the iphone "bretts iphone" because your sperture library could not be found.  Open the preferences window in aperture and enable the preference to share previews with other applications.

  • Can't open aperture library in iPhoto

When I try to open my Aperture library (v3.4.4) with iPhoto (v9.4.3), I get the following message and the application quits:
Aperture library needs to be upgraded.
To open this Aperture library in iPhoto, it first needs to be upgraded with Aperture 3.3...
Both iPhoto and Aperture worked properly with a shared library prior to installing the 3.4.4 Aperture update in mid-April 2013. Upon first launch of Aperture after the update, there was a message stating that the library needed to be upgraded. The upgrade completed succesfully, and Aperture has been running properly.
To remedy the problem, I have tried the following:
    1) Repair Permissions of the Aperture library
    2) Repair Database of the library
    3) Rebuild Database of the library
    4) Opening the iPhoto library with the menu command <Open Library in iPhoto> in Aperture (Same notice to upgrade the library appears)
    My setup is:
    - Latest 27" iMac w/ 3.2GHz Core i5, 16GB RAM
    - OSX 10.8.3
    - Aperture v3.4.4
    - iPhoto v.9.4.3
    - Aperture library is stored in the local hard drive in the Pictures folder
    - iPhoto used to make print products only availble in iPhoto
I have searched the boards and have noticed people with similar symptoms but not the same circumstances.
Does anyone have a suggestion or solution?
    Thank you.

    Added:
Just in case you cannot find a backup of the Aperture Library that has been created with AP 3.4.4, make a current backup of your Aperture library and trash the file "DataModelVersion.plist". Then open your library in Aperture 3.4.4. Aperture creates a new version of this file, at least my experiments showed, that the file can be restored this way.

  • Unable to open Aperture Library

I am once again experiencing problems with my Aperture Library which is stored in an external hard disk.
Keep getting an error "1712" and message saying that application can not be opened.
Have tried to repair by holding down the command and option key while double clicking in the library but still no success! :-(

Have tried to move my Aperture Library from the other ext drive by dragging it across, but unable to do so. Can you point me at the right direction for this?
What happens when you try? Do you you get an error message "Some items cannot be copied" or similar?  Then you new drive is probably not formatted correctly as MacOS Extended (Journaled). Backup any items you moved to the drive and reformat it:
See   Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture

  • Cannot open Aperture - I have tried all you have suggested?

    Hi
For some time, I have had some Aperture problems. It kept saying that there was no more room on my start disc for a while, and when I cleared some space, it seemed to help.....but not for long. Now I cannot even open Aperture, but I just receive this message: there was an error opening the database for the library..(and then the name of my library). I have looked at all the similar advice, and I even tried to repair aperture, but it won't do that either. I have also checked my disc, but it doesn't report any problems. PLEASE HELP!
    Sincerely, Katrine

YES, it worked to create a new library -
That is very good news. It shows that Aperture is still working.
Try, if you can repair the old library by importing it into the new library. But that will require additional disk space. How large is your current library? If it is larger than 40Gb your free disk space will not sufficce to merge libraries.  It would be best to use an external drive (formatted MacOS X Extended) for the new library.
To import the old library into a new library use the command "File > Import > Library".
If merging does not work, we will have to reconstruct a new library from bits of pieces of the old one, so keep your fingers crossed.
